The classification of projective elliptic line scrolls with the description of their singular loci is given. In particular we recover Atiyah Theorem by using classical methods.
We study the degeneracy loci of general bundle morphisms from the direct sum of m copies of the structural sheaf on $P^n$ to $Ω(2)$, also from the point of view of the classical geometrical interpretation of the sections of $Ω(2)$ as linear line complexes. We consider in particular the case of $P^5$ with m=2, 3. For n=5 and m=3 we give an explicit description of the Hilbert scheme H of elliptic normal scrolls in $P^5$, by defining a natural rational map from the Grassmannian G(2,14) to H, which results to be dominant with general fibre of degree four.
The aim of this paper is to obtain a classification of the scrolls in Pn which are defined by a one-dimensional family of lines meeting a certain set of linear spaces in Pn, a first classification for genus 0 and 1 is given in paper [1]. These ruled surfaces are called incidence scrolls, and such an indicated set is a base of the incidence scroll. In particular, we compute its degree and genus. For this, we define the fundamental incidence scroll to be the scroll in Pn formed by the lines which meet (2n-3) P{n-2}'s in general position. Then all the others incidence scrolls will be portions of …
The aim of this paper is to obtain a classification of scrolls of genus 0 and 1, which are defined by a one-dimensional family of lines meeting a certain set of linear spaces in ${\bf P}^n$. These ruled surfaces will be called incidence scrolls and such a set will be the base of the incidence scroll. Unless otherwise stated, we assume that the base spaces are in general position.
The aim of this paper is the computation of the degree and genus of all incidence scrolls in Pn. For this, we fix the dimension of a linear space which have a base space of this fixed dimension. In this way, we can obtain all the incidence scrolls with a line as directrix curve, those whose base contains a plane, and so on.
The union of two quintic elliptic scrolls in P^4 intersecting transversally along an elliptic normal quintic curve is a singular surface Z which behaves numerically like a bielliptic surface. In the appendix to the paper [W. Decker et al.: Syzygies of abelian and bielliptic surfaces in P^4, alg-geom/9606013] where the equations of this singular surface were computed, we proved that Z defines a smooth point in the appropriate Hilbert scheme and that Z cannot be smoothed in P^4. Here we consider the analogous situation in higher dimensional projective spaces P^{n-1}, where, to our surprise, the …
Let $X$ be a codimension two nonsingular subvariety of a nonsingular quadric $\Q{n}$ of dimension $n\geq 5$. We classify such subvarieties when they are scrolls. We also classify them when the degree $d\leq 10$. Both results were known when $n=4$. Keywords: Classification; liaison; low codimension; low degree; quadric; scroll; vector bundle
One of the simplest examples of a smooth, non degenerate surface in P^4 is the quintic elliptic scroll. It can be constructed from an elliptic normal curve E by joining every point on E with the translation of this point by a non-zero 2-torsion point. The same construction can be applied when E is replaced by a (lineaerly normally embedded) abelian variety A. In this paper we ask the question when the resulting scroll Y is smooth. If A is an abelian surface embedded by a line bundle L of type (d_1,d_2) and r=d_1d_2, then we prove that for general A the scroll Y is smooth if r is at least 7 wit…
We give a classification and a construction of all smooth $(n-1)$-dimensional varieties of lines in ${\bf P}\sp n$ verifying that all their lines meet a curve. This also gives a complete classification of $(n-1)$-scrolls over a curve contained in $G(1,n)$.
To complete the classification theory and the structure theory of varieties of almost minimal degree, that is of non-degenerate irreducible projective varieties whose degree exceeds the codimension by precisely 2, a natural approach is to investigate simple projections of varieties of minimal degree. Let $\tilde X \subset {\mathbb P}^{r+1}_K$ be a variety of minimal degree and of codimension at least 2, and consider $X_p = π_p (\tilde X) \subset {\mathbb P}^r_K$ where $p \in {\mathbb P}^{r+1}_K \backslash \tilde X$. By \cite{B-Sche}, it turns out that the cohomological and local properties of …
In this paper we classify all configurations of singular fibers of elliptic fibrations on the double cover of P^2 ramified along six lines in general position.
We provide two examples of smooth projective surfaces of tame CM type, by showing that any parameter space of isomorphism classes of indecomposable ACM bundles with fixed rank and determinant on a rational quartic scroll in projective 5-space is either a single point or a projective line. For surfaces of minimal degree and wild CM type, we classify rigid Ulrich bundles as Fibonacci extensions. For the rational normal scrolls S(2,3) and S(3,3), a complete classification of rigid ACM bundles is given in terms of the action of the braid group in three strands.
We determine and list all possible configurations of singular fibres on rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic three. In total, we find that 267 distinct configurations exist. This result complements Miranda and Persson's classification in characteristic zero, and Lang's classification in characteristic two.
Let $X$ be a rational elliptic surface with elliptic fibration $π:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of any characteristic. Given a conic bundle $φ:X\to\Bbb{P}^1$ we use numerical arguments to classify all possible fibers of $φ$ and study the interplay between singular fibers of $π$ and $φ$.
We study Mori's three-dimensional contractions $f\colon X\to Z$. It is proved that on the ``good'' model $(\bar X,\bar S)$ the exceptional divisor has no elliptic components of $Diff_{\bar S}$ with coefficients $\ge 6/7$.
A complete classification is presented of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to certain mildly singular complex Fano 3-folds. Detailed proofs are given for one example case, namely that of a general hypersurface X of degree 30 in weighted P^4 with weights 1,4,5,6,15; but our methods apply more generally. For constructing birational maps from X to elliptic and K3 fibrations we use Kawamata blowups and Mori theory to compute anticanonical rings; to exclude other possible fibrations we make a close examination of the strictly canonical singularities of (X,(1/n)H), where H is the linear system …
We present a complete list of extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. There are altogether 325 of them. The first 112 coincides with Miranda-Persson's list for semi-stable ones. The data include the transcendental lattice which determines uniquely the K3 surface by a result of Shioda and Inose, the singular fibre type and the Mordell Weil group. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the topological fundamental group of complement to an ADE-configuration of smooth rational curves on a K3 surface to be trivial.
The elliptic curves on a surface of general type constitute an obstruction for the cotangent sheaf to be ample. In this paper, we give the classification of the configurations of the elliptic curves on the Fano surface of a smooth cubic threefold. That means that we give the number of such curves, their intersections and a plane model. This classification is linked to the classification of the automorphism groups of theses surfaces.
We classify the Deligne-Mumford stacks M compactifying the moduli space of smooth $n$-pointed curves of genus one under the condition that the points of M represent Gorenstein curves with distinct markings. This classification uncovers new moduli spaces $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$, which we may think of coming from an enrichment of the notion of level used to define Smyth's $m$-stable spaces. Finally, we construct a cube complex of Artin stacks interpolating between the $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$'s, a multidimensional analogue of the wall-and-chamber structure seen in the log minimal model …
The theorem referred to in the title is a technical result that is needed for the classification of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We present a complete proof of the Curve Exclusion Theorem, which first appeared in the author's unpublished PhD thesis [Ry02] and has since been relied upon in solutions to many cases of the fibration classification problem. We give examples of these solutions and discuss them briefly.
We classify, up to automorphisms, the elliptic fibrations on the singular K3 surface $X$ whose transcendental lattice is isometric to $\langle 6\rangle\oplus \langle 2\rangle$.
We classify the log del Pezzo surface (S,B) of rank 1 with no 1-,2-,3-,4-, or 6-complements with the additional condition that B has one irreducible component C which is an elliptic curve, and that C has the coefficient b in B with (1/n)floor((n+1)b)=1 for n=1,2,3,4, and 6.
In this paper the author provides a generalization of classical linkage, i.e. linkage by a complete intersection, in a different context. Namely she looks at residuals in the scheme theoretic intersection of a rational normal surface or 3-fold with two hypersurfaces of degree a and b. When the scroll is singular a complete intersection of type (a, b) on it may not be Gorenstein, in this case classical linkage, even if suitably generalized, does not apply. The main purpose of this article is to establish a framework allowing one to find relations between the dimension of some important cohomolo…
We classify all the relative positions between an ellipsoid and an elliptic paraboloid when the ellipsoid is small in comparison with the paraboloid ({\it small} meaning that the ellipsoid cannot be tangent to the paraboloid at two points simultaneously). This provides an easy way to detect contact between the two surfaces by a direct analysis of the coefficients of a fourth degree polynomial.
Let N a compact complex submanifold of a compact complex manifold M. We say N splits in M, if the holomorphic tangent bundle sequence splits holomorphically. By a result of Mok a splitting submanifold of a Kaehler Einstein manifold with a projective structure is totally geodesic. The classification of all splitting submanifolds of families of fake elliptic curves given here completes the case of threefolds M with a projective structure by a previous result of the authors.
We classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves over quintic number fields. In addition, let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q and let G = E(Q)_tors be the associated torsion subgroup. We study, for a given G, which possible groups G \subseteq H could appear such that H=E(K)_tors, for [K:Q]=5. In particular, we prove that at most there is a quintic number field K such that E(Q)_tors\neq E(K)_tors.
We classify two dimensional integrable mappings by investigating the actions on the fiber space of rational elliptic surfaces. While the QRT mappings can be restricted on each fiber, there exist several classes of integrable mappings which exchange fibers. We also show an equivalent condition when a generalized Halphen surface becomes a Halphen surface of index m.
Motivated by a problem originating in string theory, we study elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces with large Picard number modulo isomorphism. We give methods to determine upper bounds for the number of inequivalent K3 surfaces sharing the same frame lattice. For any given Neron--Severi lattice $S_X$, such a bound on the `multiplicity' can be derived by investigating the quotient of the isometry group of $S_X$ by the automorphism group. The resulting bounds are strongest for large Picard numbers and multiplicities of unity do indeed occur for a number of K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Under…
Nishiyama introduced a lattice theoretic classification of the elliptic fibrations on a $K3$ surface. In a previous paper we used his method to exhibit $52$ elliptic fibrations, up to isomorphisms, of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant $-12$. We prove here that the list is complete with a $53$th fibration, thanks to a remark of Elkies and Schütt. We characterize the fibration both theoretically and with a Weierstrass model.
Using Lagrangian Floer theory, we study the tropical geometry of K3 surfaces with general singular fibres. In particular, we give the local models for the type $I_n$, $II$, $III$ and $IV$ singular fibres in the Kodaira's classification and generalize the correspondence theorem between open Gromov-Witten invariants/tropical discs counting to these cases.
In this paper we explain the parallelism in the classification of three different kinds of mathematical objects: (i) Classical r-matrices. (ii) Generalized cohomology theories that have Chern classes for complex vector bundles. (iii) 1-dimensional formal groups. The main point of the paper is a construction of the elliptic algebra associated to Belavin's classical elliptic r-matrix in terms of Equivariant elliptic cohomology of the Steinberg varieties associated to some partial flag manifolds.
We consider the isomonodromy problems for flat $G$-bundles over punctured elliptic curves $Σ_τ$ with regular singularities of connections at marked points. The bundles are classified by their characteristic classes. These classes are elements of the second cohomology group $H^2(Σ_τ,{\mathcal Z}(G))$, where ${\mathcal Z}(G)$ is the center of $G$. For any complex simple Lie group $G$ and arbitrary class we define the moduli space of flat bundles, and in this way construct the monodromy preserving equations in the Hamiltonian form and their Lax representations. In particular, they include the Pai…
