The elliptic curves on a surface of general type constitute an obstruction for the cotangent sheaf to be ample. In this paper, we give the classification of the configurations of the elliptic curves on the Fano surface of a smooth cubic threefold. That means that we give the number of such curves, their intersections and a plane model. This classification is linked to the classification of the automorphism groups of theses surfaces.
Curves of low genus on a surface carry important informations on that surface. We study the Fano surfaces of lines of cubic threefolds that contain 12 or 30 elliptic curves. We determine their Picard number and compute a basis of the Néron-Severi group of the Fano surface of the Fermat cubic threefold.
We classify birational maps into elliptic fibrations of a general quasismooth hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}(1,a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$ of degree $\sum_{i=1}^{4}a_{i}$ that has terminal singularities.
The theorem referred to in the title is a technical result that is needed for the classification of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces in weighted projective space. We present a complete proof of the Curve Exclusion Theorem, which first appeared in the author's unpublished PhD thesis [Ry02] and has since been relied upon in solutions to many cases of the fibration classification problem. We give examples of these solutions and discuss them briefly.
A complete classification is presented of elliptic and K3 fibrations birational to certain mildly singular complex Fano 3-folds. Detailed proofs are given for one example case, namely that of a general hypersurface X of degree 30 in weighted P^4 with weights 1,4,5,6,15; but our methods apply more generally. For constructing birational maps from X to elliptic and K3 fibrations we use Kawamata blowups and Mori theory to compute anticanonical rings; to exclude other possible fibrations we make a close examination of the strictly canonical singularities of (X,(1/n)H), where H is the linear system …
According to Mukai, any prime Fano threefold X of genus 7 is a linear section of the spinor tenfold in the projectivized half-spinor space of Spin(10). It is proven that the moduli space of stable rank-2 vector bundles with Chern classes c_1=1,c_2=5 on a generic X is isomorphic to the curve of genus 7 obtained by taking an orthogonal linear section of the spinor tenfold. This is an inverse of Mukai's result on the isomorphism of a non-abelian Brill--Noether locus on a curve of genus 7 to a Fano threefold of genus 7. An explicit geometric construction of both isomorphisms and a similar result f…
We study the configurations of genus 2 curves on the Fano surfaces of cubic threefolds. We establish a link between some involutive automorphisms acting on such a surface S and genus 2 curves on S. We give a partial classification of the Fano surfaces according to the automorphism group generated by these involutions and determine the configurations of their genus 2 curves. We study the Fano surface of the Klein cubic threefold for which the 55 genus 2 curves generate a rank 25=h^{1,1} index 2 subgroup of the Néron-Severi group.
Let $X$ be any smooth prime Fano threefold of degree $2g-2$ in $\mathbb{P}^{g+1}$, with $g \in \{3,\ldots,10,12\}$. We prove that for any integer $d$ satisfying $\left\lfloor \frac{g+3}{2} \right\rfloor \leq d \leq g+3$ the Hilbert scheme parametrizing smooth irreducible elliptic curves of degree $d$ in $X$ is nonempty and has a component of dimension $d$, which is furthermore reduced except for the case when $(g,d)=(4,3)$ and $X$ is contained in a singular quadric. Consequently, we deduce that the moduli space of rank--two slope--stable $ACM$ bundles $\mathcal{F}_d$ on $X$ such that $\det(\ma…
We show that the moduli space of elliptic curves of minimal degree in a general Fano variety of lines of a cubic fourfold is a non-singular curve of genus $631$. The curve admits a natural involution with connected quotient. We find that the general Fano contains precisely $3780$ elliptic curves of minimal degree with fixed (general) $j$-invariant. More generally, we express (modulo a transversality result) the enumerative count of elliptic curves of minimal degree in hyper-Kähler varieties with fixed $j$-invariant in terms of Gromov--Witten invariants. In $K3[2]$-type this leads to explicit f…
We study the Fano surface S of the Fermat cubic threefold. We prove that S is a degree 81 abelian cover of the degree 5 del Pezzo surface and that the complement of the union of 12 disjoint elliptic curves on S is a ball quotient. The lattice of this ball quotient is related to the Deligne-Mostow lattice number 1.
Let $V_1$ be the Fano threefold given as a hypersurface of degree 6 in $P(1,1,1,2,3)$ (over a number field $K$). Then there exists a finite extension $K'/K$ such that the set of $K'$-rational points of $X$ is Zariski dense.
Let X be the blow-up of a smooth projective 4-fold Y along a smooth curve C and let E be the exceptional divisor. Assume that X is a Fano manifold and has an elementary extremal contraction $ϕ: X \to Z$ of (3,1)-type such that E is $ϕ$-ample (recall that a contraction map for a 4-fold is called (3,1)-type if the exceptional locus is a divisor and its image is a curve). We show that if the exceptional divisor of $ϕ$ is smooth, then Y is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ and C is an elliptic curve of degree 4.
For any flat projective family $(\mX,\mL)\rightarrow C$ such that the generic fibre $\mX_η$ is a klt Q-Fano variety and $\mL|_{\mX_η}\sim_{Q}-K_{X_η}$, we use the techniques from the minimal model program (MMP) to modify the total family. The end product is a family such that every fiber is a klt Q-Fano variety. Moreover, we can prove that the Donaldson-Futaki invariants of the appearing models decrease. When the family is a test configuration of a fixed Fano variety $(X,-K_X)$, this implies Tian's conjecture: given $X$ a Fano manifold, to test its K-(semi, poly)stability, we only need to test…
We determine the Cox rings of the minimal resolutions of cubic surfaces with at most rational double points, of blow ups of the projective plane at non-general configurations of six points and of three dimensional smooth Fano varieties of Picard numbers one and two.
We study birational transformations into elliptic fibrations and birational automorphisms of quasismooth anticanonically embedded weighted Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces having terminal singularities classified by A.R. Iano-Fletcher, J. Johnson, J. Kollar, and M. Reid.
We construct $13$ projective $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial Fano toric varieties and show that for any minimal rational elliptic surface $X$ there is one such toric variety $Z_X$ and a divisor class $δ_X\in {\rm Cl}(Z_X)$ such that the number of $(-1)$-curves of $X$ equals the dimension of the Riemann-Roch space of $δ_X$. As an application we give the number of $(-1)$-curves of any such elliptic fibration of Halphen index $2$.
Simply connected compact Kähler manifolds of dimension up to three with elliptic homotopy type are characterized in terms of their Hodge diamonds. This is applied to classify the simply connected Kähler surfaces and Fano threefolds with elliptic homotopy type.
We prove the Doran-Harder-Thompson conjecture in the case of elliptic curves by using ideas from SYZ mirror symmetry. The conjecture claims that when a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ degenerates to a union of two quasi-Fano manifolds (Tyurin degeneration), a mirror Calabi-Yau manifold of $X$ can be constructed by gluing the two mirror Landau-Ginzburg models of the quasi-Fano manifolds. The two crucial ideas in our proof are to obtain a complex structure by gluing the underlying affine manifolds and to construct the theta functions from the Landau-Ginzburg superpotentials.
The Fano-Snowflake, a specific $non$-unimodular projective lattice configuration associated with the smallest ring of ternions $R_{\diamondsuit}$ (arXiv:0803.4436 and 0806.3153), admits an interesting partitioning with respect to the Jacobson radical of $R_{\diamondsuit}$. The totality of 21 free cyclic submodules generated by non-unimodular vectors of the free left $R_{\diamondsuit}$-module $R_{\diamondsuit}^{3}$ are shown to split into three disjoint sets of cardinalities 9, 9 and 3 according as the number of Jacobson radical entries in the generating vector is 2, 1 or 0, respectively. The c…
Let $W\subset \mathbb{P}^{13}$ be the image of the rational map defined by the linear system of the sextic surfaces of $\mathbb{P}^3$ having double points along the edges of a tetrahedron. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the linear system of the hyperplane sections of $W$. It is known that a general $S\in \mathcal{L}$ is an Enriques surface. The aim of this paper is to study the sublinear system $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}\subset \mathcal{L}$ of the hyperplane sections of $W$ having a triple point at a general point $w \in W$. We will show that a general element of $\mathcal{L}_{\bullet}$ is birational to an …
We study elliptically fibered K3 surfaces, with sections, in toric Fano threefolds which satisfy certain combinatorial properties relevant to F-theory/Heterotic duality. We show that some of these conditions are equivalent to the existence of an appropriate notion of a Weierstrass model adapted to the toric context. Moreover, we show that if in addition other conditions are satisfied, there exists a toric semistable degeneration of the elliptic K3 surface which is compatible with the elliptic fibration and F-theory/Heterotic duality.
We focus on a class of Weierstrass elliptic threefolds that allows the base of the fibration to be a Fano surface or a numerically $K$-trivial surface. We define the notion of limit tilt stability, and show that the Fourier-Mukai transform of a slope stable torsion-free sheaf satisfying a vanishing condition in codimension 2 (e.g. a reflexive sheaf) is a limit tilt stable object. We also show that the inverse Fourier-Mukai transform of a limit tilt semistable object of nonzero fiber degree is a slope semistable torsion-free sheaf, up to modification in codimension 2.
Similarly to the linear Harbourne constant recently defined, we study the elliptic $H$-constants of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ and Abelian surfaces. We exhibit configurations of smooth plane cubic curves whose Harbourne index is arbitrarily close to $-4$. As a Corollary, we obtain that the global $H$-constant of any surface $X$ is less or equal to $-4$. Related to these problems, we moreover give a new inequality for the number and multiplicities of singularities of elliptic curves arrangements on Abelian surfaces, inequality which has a close similarity to the one of Hirzebruch for arrangements of line…
Let $G$ be a connected, complex reductive Lie group and $X$ a $\mathbb Q$-Fano $G$-spherical variety. In this paper we compute the weighed non-Archimedean functionals of a $G$-equivariant normal test configurations of $X$ via combinatory data. Also we define a modified Futaki invariant with respect to the weight $g$, and give an expression in terms of intersection numbers. Finally we show the equivalence of different notations of stability and gives a stability criterion on $\mathbb Q$-Fano spherical varieties, which is also a criterion of existence of Kähler-Ricci $g$-solitons.
We classify all the possible configurations of singular fibers and the torsion parts of Mordell-Weil groups of complex elliptic K3 surfaces. The complete list of 3279 configurations is attached.
A K3 surface is a quaternionic analogue of an elliptic curve from a view point of moduli of vector bundles. We can prove the algebraicity of certain Hodge cycles and a rigidity of curve of genus eleven and gives two kind of descriptions of Fano threefolds as applications. In the final section we discuss a simplified construction of moduli spaces.
We determine and list all possible configurations of singular fibres on rational elliptic surfaces in characteristic three. In total, we find that 267 distinct configurations exist. This result complements Miranda and Persson's classification in characteristic zero, and Lang's classification in characteristic two.
Using the theory of rational elliptic fibrations, we construct and discuss a one parameter family of configurations of $12$ conics and $9$ points in the projective plane that realizes an abstract configuration $(12_6,9_8)$. This is analogous to the famous Hesse configuration of $12$ lines and $9$ points forming an abstract configuration $(12_3,9_4)$. We also show that any Halphen elliptic fibration of index $2$ with four triangular singular fibers arises from such configuration of conics.
In this paper we classify all configurations of singular fibers of elliptic fibrations on the double cover of P^2 ramified along six lines in general position.
We first classify the possible configurations of fibrations which are not semi-stable on extremal elliptic K3 surfaces. Then we give a complete list of extremal elliptic K3 surfaces whose singular fibers are all not of type $I_n$.
A theoretical foundation for a generalization of the elliptic difference Painlevé equation to higher dimensions is provided in the framework of birational Weyl group action on the space of point configurations in general position in a projective space. By introducing an elliptic parametrization of point configurations, a realization of the Weyl group is proposed as a group of Cremona transformations containing elliptic functions in the coefficients. For this elliptic Cremona system, a theory of $τ$-functions is developed to translate it into a system of bilinear equations of Hirota-Miwa type f…
We construct a dga to computing the cohomology of ordered configuration spaces on an algebraic variety with vanishing Euler characteristic. It follows that the $k$-th Betti number of $Conf(C,n)$ ($C$ is an elliptic curve) grows as a polynomial of degree exactly $2k-2$. We also compute $H^k(Conf(C,n))$ for $k \leq 5$ and arbitrary $n$.
We construct some non-arithmetic ball quotients as branched covers of a quotient of an Abelian surface by a finite group, and compare them with lattices that previously appear in the literature. This gives an alternative construction, which is independent of the computer, of some lattices constructed by the author with Parker and Paupert.
We show that a general elliptic K3 surface with a section is determined uniquely by its discriminant, which is a configuration of 24 points on the projective line. It follows that a general elliptic K3 surface with a section can be reconstructed from its Gromov-Hausdorff limit as the volume of the fiber goes to zero.
A deep result of Voisin asserts that the Griffiths group of a general non-rigid Calabi-Yau (CY) 3-fold is infinitely generated. This theorem builds on an earlier method of hers which was implemented by Albano and Collino to prove the same result for a general cubic sevenfold. In fact, Voisin's method can be utilized precisely because the variation of Hodge structure on a cubic 7-fold behaves just like the variation of Hodge structure of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We explain this relationship concretely using Kontsevitch's noncommutative geometry. Namely, we show that for a cubic 7-fold, there is a n…
In this article, we study the divisor classes of del Pezzo surfaces, which are written as the sum of distinct lines with fixed intersection according to the inscribed simplexes and crosspolytopes in Gosset polytopes. We introduce the k-Steiner system and cornered simplexes, and characterize the configurations of inscribed m(<4)-simplexes with them. Higher dimensional inscribed m(3<m)-simplexes exist in 4_{21} in the Picard group of del Pezzo surface S_{8} of degree 1.The configurations of 4- and 7-simplexes are related to rulings in S_{8}. And the configurations of 5- and 6-simplexes correspon…
We study the Seiberg-Witten curves for N=2 SUSY gauge theories arising from type IIA string configurations with two orientifold sixplanes. Such theories lift to elliptic models in M-theory. We express the M-theory background for these models as a nontrivial elliptic fibration over C. We discuss singularities of this surface, and write the Seiberg-Witten curve for several theories as a subvariety of this surface.
We study certain even-eight curve configurations on a specific class of Jacobian elliptic K3 surfaces with lattice polarizations of rank ten. These configurations are associated with K3 double covers, some of which are elliptic but not Jacobian elliptic. Several non-generic cases corresponding to K3 surfaces of higher Picard rank are also discussed. Finally, the results and the construction in question are interpreted in the context of the string dualities linked with the eight-dimensional CHL string.
The multi-Banana configuration $\widehat{F}_{mb}$ is a local Calabi-Yau threefold of Schoen type. Namely, $\widehat{F}_{mb}$ is a conifold resolution of $\widehat{I}_v \times_{\bf{D}} \widehat{I}_w$, where $\widehat{I}_v \to {\bf{D}}$ is an elliptic surface over a formal disc ${\bf{D}}$ with an $I_v$ singulararity on the central fiber. We generalize the technique developed in our earlier paper to compute genus 0 Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of certain fiber curve classes. We illustrate the computation explicitly for $v=1$ and $v=w=2$. The resulting partition function can be expressed in terms of …
The string landscape satisfies interesting finiteness properties imposed by supersymmetry and string-theoretical consistency conditions. We study N=1 supersymmetric compactifications of Type IIB string theory on smooth elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds at large volume with magnetized D9-branes and D5-branes. We prove that supersymmetry and tadpole cancellation conditions imply that there is a finite number of such configurations. In particular, we derive an explicitly computable bound on the number of magnetic flux quanta, as well as the number of D5-branes, which is independent of th…
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. In this paper, we show that the $i$-th Betti number of the unordered configuration space $\mathrm{Conf}^{n}(E^{\times})$ of $n$ points on $E^{\times}$ appears as a coefficient of an explicit rational function in two variables. We also compute its Hodge numbers as coefficients of another explicit rational function in four variables. Our result is interesting because these rational functions resemble the generating function of the $\mathbb{F}_{q}$-point counts of $\mathr…
