It follows that the $k$-th Betti number of $Conf(C,n)$ ($C$ is an elliptic curve) grows as a polynomial of degree exactly $2k-2$. We also compute $H^k(Conf(C,n))$ for $k \leq 5$ and arbitrary $n$.

Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$, let $E^{\times}$ be an open subset of $E$ obtained by removing a point. We study configuration spaces $C(n; p, q)$ of $n$ ordered unit squares in a $p$ by $q$ rectangle. Our goal is to estimate the Betti numbers for large $n$, $j$, $p$, and $q$. We consider sequences of area-normalized coordinates, where $(\frac{n}{pq}, \frac{j}{pq})$ converges as $n$, $j$, $p$, and $q$ approach infinity. We give combinatorial models for the homotopy type of complements of elliptic arrangements (i.e., certain sets of abelian subvarieties in a product of elliptic curves). We give a presentation of the fundamental group of such spaces and, as an application, we treat the case of ordered configuration spaces of elliptic curves. Our models are finite polyhedral CW complexes, and our combinatorial tools of choice are acyclic categories (small categories without loops). As a stepping stone, we give a characterization of which acyclic categories arise as face categories of polyhedral CW complexes.
