16 pages; correction in introduction: to author's knowledge, there are no other known examples of continuous isospectral deformations of metrics on spheres
We construct non-trivial continuous isospectral deformations of Riemannian metrics on the ball and on the sphere in $\R^n$ for every $n\geq 9$. The metrics on the sphere can be chosen arbitrarily close to the round metric; in particular, they can be chosen to be positively curved. The metrics on the ball are both Dirichlet and Neumann isospectral and can be chosen arbitrarily close to the flat metric.
We construct a Laplace isospectral deformation of metrics on an orbifold quotient of a nilmanifold. Each orbifold in the deformation contains singular points with order two isotropy. Isospectrality is obtained by modifying a generalization of Sunada's Theorem due to DeTurck and Gordon.
The intertwining operator constructed in [Sz1,Sz2] does not appear in the right form. It is established there by using only the anticommutators. The correct operator must involve all endomorphisms, which are unified by the Z-Fourier transform. Although some of the correct elements of the previous constructions are kept, this idea is established by a new technique which yields the various isospectrality theorems stated in the papers on a much larger scale. The new results include new isospectrality examples living on sphere$X$ball- and sphere$X$sphere-type manifolds. Among them, there are such …
We construct pairs of conformally equivalent isospectral Riemannian metrics $ϕ_1 g$ and $ϕ_2 g$ on spheres $S^n$ and balls $B^{n+1}$ for certain dimensions $n$, the smallest of which is $n=7$, and on certain compact simple Lie groups. In the case of Lie groups, the metric $g$ is left-invariant. In the case of spheres and balls, the metric $g$ is not the standard metric but may be chosen arbitrarily close to the standard one. For the same manifolds $(M,g)$ we also show that the functions $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$ are isospectral potentials for the Schrödinger operator $\hbar^2Δ+ϕ$. To our knowledge, thes…
We construct isospectral pairs of Riemannian metrics on S^5 and on B^6, thus lowering by three the dimension of spheres and balls on which such metrics have been constructed previously (S^{n\ge 8} and B^{n\ge 9}). We also construct continuous families of isospectral Riemannian metrics on S^7 and on B^8. In each of these examples, the metrics can be chosen equal to the standard metric outside certain subsets of arbitrarily small volume.
We describe infinitesimal deformations of constant mean curvature surfaces of finite type in the 3-sphere. We use Baker-Akhiezer functions to describe such deformations, as well as polynomial Killing fields and the corresponding spectral curve to distinguish between isospectral and non-isospectral deformations.
We construct the first examples of continuous families of isospectral Riemannian metrics that are not locally isometric on closed manifolds, more precisely, on $S^n\times T^m$, where $T^m$ is a torus of dimension $m\ge 2$ and $S^n$ is a sphere of dimension $n\ge 4$. These metrics are not locally homogeneous; in particular, the scalar curvature of each metric is nonconstant. For some of the deformations, the maximum scalar curvature changes during the deformation.
To what extent does the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold determine the geometry of the manifold? We give examples of isospectral manifolds with different local geometry including continuous families of isospectral negatively curved manifolds with boundary as well as various pairs of manifolds. The latter illustrate that the spectrum does not determine whether a manifold with boundary has negative curvature, whether it has constant Ricci curvature, and whether it has parallel curvature tensor, and the spectrum does not determine whether a clo…
This article concludes the comprehensive study started in [Sz5], where the first non-trivial isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. These investigations incorporate 4 different cases since these balls and spheres are considered both on 2-step nilpotent Lie groups and on their solvable extensions. In [Sz5] the considerations are completely concluded in the ball-case and in the nilpotent-case. The other cases were mostly outlined. In this paper the isospectrality theorems are completely established on spheres. Also the important details required about the solvable ext…
We prove the existence of multiparameter isospectral deformations of metrics on SO(n) $(n = 9$ and $n\geq 11)$, SU(n) $(n\geq 8)$, and $Sp(n)$ $(n\geq 4)$. For these examples, we follow a metric construction developed by Schueth who had given one-parameter families of isospectral metrics on orthogonal and unitary groups. Our multiparameter families are obtained by a new proof of nontriviality establishing a generic condition for nonisometry of metrics arising from the construction. We also show the existence of non-congruent pairs of isospectral potentials and nonisometric pairs of isospectral…
The first isospectral pairs of metrics are constructed on balls and spheres. This long standing problem, concerning the existence of such pairs, has been solved by a new method called "Anticommutator Technique." Among the wide range of such pairs, the most striking examples are provided on (4k-1)-dimensional spheres, where k > 2. One of these metrics is homogeneous (since it is the metric on the geodesic sphere of a 2-point homogeneous space), while the other is locally inhomogeneous. These examples demonstrate the surprising fact that no information about the isometries is encoded in the spec…
Let a sequence of conformal Riemannian metrics $\{g_k=u_k^2g_0\}$ be isospectral to $g_0$ over a compact boundaryless smooth 4-dimension manifold $(M,g_0)$. We prove that the subsequence of conformal factors $\{u_k\}$ converges to $u$ weakly in $W^{2,p}_{loc}(M\setminus \mathcal{S})$ for some $p<2$, where $\mathcal{S}$ is a finite set of points and $u\in W^{2,p}(M,g_0)$. Moreover, if the isospectral invariant $\frac{\int_M R(g_k)dV_{g_k}}{6\sqrt{\mathrm{Vol}(M,g_k)}}$ is strictly smaller than the Yamabe constant of the standard sphere $\mathbb{S}^4$, then the subsequence of distance functions …
We construct continuous families of Riemannian metrics on certain simply connected manifolds with the property that the resulting Riemannian manifolds are pairwise isospectral for the Laplace operator acting on functions. These are the first examples of simply connected Riemannian manifolds without boundary which are isospectral, but not isometric. For example, we construct continuous isospectral families of metrics on the product of spheres S^4\times S^3\times S^3. The metrics considered are not locally homogeneous. For a big class of such families, the set of critical values of the scalar cu…
We show that any two left-invariant metrics on $S^3\cong\operatorname{SU}(2)$ which are isospectral for the associated classical Dirac operator $D$ must be isometric. In the case of left-invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature, we compute and use the smallest eigenvalue of $D^2$. We show analogous results for left-invariant metrics on $\operatorname{SO}(3)=S^3/\{\pm1\}$ for each of its two spin structures.

In this paper we numerically construct CMC deformations of the Lawson minimal surfaces $ξ_{g,1}$ using a spectral curve and a DPW approach to CMC surfaces in spaceforms.
The theory of surfaces in Euclidean space can be naturally formulated in the more general context of Legendre surfaces into the space of contact elements. We address the question of deformability of Legendre surfaces with respect to the symmetry group of Lie sphere contact transformations from the point of view of the deformation theory of submanifolds in homogeneous spaces. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for a Legendre surface to admit non-trivial deformations and the corresponding existence problem is discussed.
The aim of the paper is to investigate the rigidity and the deformability of pseudoholomorphic curves in the nearly K{ä}hler sphere $\mathbb{S}^6,$ among minimal surfaces in spheres. Under various assumptions we describe the moduli space of all noncongruent minimal surfaces $f\colon M\to\mathbb{S}^n$ that are isometric to a pseudoholomorphic curve in $\mathbb{S}^6.$ Moreover, we prove a Schur type theorem (see \cite[p. 36]{Chnew}) for minimal surfaces in spheres.
Associated to every complete affine 3-manifold M with nonsolvable fundamental group is a noncompact hyperbolic surface S. We classify such complete affine structures when Sigma is homeomorphic to a three-holed sphere. In particular, for every such complete hyperbolic surface Sigma, the deformation space identifies with two opposite octants in R^3. Furthermore every M admits a fundamental polyhedron bounded by crooked planes. Therefore M is homeomorphic to an open solid handlebody of genus two. As an explicit application of this theory, we construct proper affine deformations of an arithmetic F…
This paper applies the authors' forthcoming work, "Affine deformations of a three-holed sphere" in Lorentzian geometry to prove a result in hyperbolic geometry. Namely, an infinitesimal deformation of a hyperbolic structure of a three-holed sphere which infinitesimally lengthens the three boundary components infinitesimally lengthens every closed geodesic. The proof interprets the derivative of the geodesic length function as the Margulis invariant (signed marked Lorentzian length spectrum) of the corresponding affine deformation. The aforementioned results imply that the affine deformation is…
In [5], together with J. C. Wood, the authors gave a completely explicit formula for all harmonic maps from $2$-spheres to the unitary group $U(n)$ in terms of freely chosen meromorphic functions on $S^2$. The simplest harmonic maps are the isotropic ones. Using Morse theory Burstall and Guest [1] showed that the harmonic maps come in clusters labeled by the isotropic ones. In this work, using the formula for harmonic maps aforementioned, we describe explicitly this procedure, showing how all harmonic maps can be built from the isotropic ones. [1] F.~E.\ Burstall and M.~A.\ Guest, \textit{Harm…
It was shown by Ramanathan \cite{R} that any compact oriented non-simply-connected minimal surface in the three-dimensional round sphere admits at most a finite set of pairwise noncongruent minimal isometric immersions. Here we show that this result extends to isotropic surfaces in spheres of arbitrary dimension. The case of non-compact isotropic surfaces in space forms is also addressed.
The main goal in this paper is to point out that quantity $||\nabla R||^2(p)$ on a harmonic space can not be determined by the spectra of local geodesic spheres or balls, therefore the main results of [AM-S] (quoted in the title) are wrong. My strong interest in the above theorem is motivated by the fact that it contradicts some of my isospectrality examples constructed on geodesic spheres and balls of certain harmonic manifolds. The authors overlooked that the Lichnerowicz identity is not determined by the given spectral data, and so is the final crucial equation obtained by eliminating with …
A compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ induces a Poisson structure $π$ on the unit sphere $S$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We compute the moduli space of Poisson structures on $S$ around $π$. This is the first explicit computation of a Poisson moduli space in dimension greater or equal than three around a degenerate (i.e. not symplectic) Poisson structure.
We propose a unified computational framework for the problem of deformation and rigidity of submanifolds in a homogeneous space under geometric constraint. A notion of 1-rigidity of a submanifold under admissible deformations is introduced. It measures how a deformation deviates from a one parameter family of motions up to 1st order. We implement this method to rigidity of CR submanifolds in spheres. A class of submanifolds called Bochner rigid submanifolds are shown to be 1-rigid under type preserving CR deformations. This 1-rigidity is then extended to a local rigidity, which roughly states …
In a 1983 paper with Frank Warner, we proved that the space of all great circle fibrations of the 3-sphere S^3 deformation retracts to the subspace of Hopf fibrations, and so has the homotopy type of a pair of disjoint two-spheres. Since that time, no generalization of this result to higher dimensions has been found, and so we narrow our sights here and show that in an infinitesimal sense explained below, the space of all smooth oriented great circle fibrations of the 2n+1 sphere S^(2n+1) deformation retracts to its subspace of Hopf fibrations. The tools gathered to prove this also serve to sh…
We study the envelopes of meromorphy of neighborhoods of symplectically immersed two-spheres in complex Kähler surfaces using the Gromov's theory of pseudoholomorphic curves. The construction of a complete family of holomorphic deformations of a non-compact complex curve in a complex manifold, parametrized by a finite codimension analytic subset of a Banach ball, is given. The existence of this family is used to prove a generalization of Levi's continuity principle, which is applied to describe envelopes of meromorphy.
We prove that the group of strict contactomorphisms of the standard tight contact structure on the three-sphere deformation retracts to its unitary subgroup U(2).
Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which res…
We prove that the only exact Lagrangian submanifolds in an ALE space are spheres. ALE spaces are the simply connected hyperkahler manifolds which at infinity look like C^2/G for any finite subgroup G of SL(2,C). They can be realized as the plumbing of copies of the cotangent bundle of a 2-sphere according to ADE Dynkin diagrams. The proof relies on symplectic cohomology.
