The two-by-two Sp(2) matrix has three parameters with unit determinant. Yet, there are no established procedures for diagonalizing this matrix. It is shown that this matrix can be written as a similarity transformation of the two-by-two Wigner matrix, derivable from Wigner's little group which dictates the internal space-time symmetries of relativistic particles. The Wigner matrix can be diagonalized for massive and space-like particles, while it takes a triangular form with unit diagonal elements for light-like particles. The most immediate physical application can be made to repeated one-dimensional transfer matrices appearing in many different branches of physics. Another application of current interest could be the dis-entanglement of entangled systems.
The precise calculations of the Wigner's d-matrix are important in various research fields. Due to the presence of large numbers, direct calculations of the matrix using the Wigner's formula suffer from loss of precision. We present a simple method to avoid this problem by expanding the d-matrix into a complex Fourier series and calculate the Fourier coefficients by exactly diagonalizing the angular-momentum operator $J_{y}$ in the eigenbasis of $J_{z}$. This method allows us to compute the d-matrix and its various derivatives for spins up to a few thousand. The precision of the d-matrix from …
In this paper a geometric method based on Grassmann manifolds and matrix Riccati equations to make hermitian matrices diagonal is presented. We call it Riccati Diagonalization.
It is well known that a set of non-defect matrices can be simultaneously diagonalized if and only if the matrices commute. In the case of non-commuting matrices, the best that can be achieved is simultaneous block diagonalization. Here we give an efficient algorithm to explicitly compute a transfer matrix which realizes the simultaneous block diagonalization of unitary matrices whose decomposition in irreducible blocks (common invariant subspaces) is known from elsewhere. Our main motivation lies in particle physics, where the resulting transfer matrix must be known explicitly in order to uneq…
We present a prescription for forming matrices with specified eigenvalues and known eigenvectors. With this method, we can form Hermitian, anti-Hermitian, symmetric and general matrices with arbitrary eigenvalues. In addition we propose an algorithm for diagonalizing such matrices. The functions required for the realization of this are probability amplitudes connecting observables with discrete eigenvalue spectra and can be obtained from spin theory. For the example case of $5\times 5$ matrices, these functions are given.
The diagonalization of matrices may be the top priority in the application of modern physics. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate that, for real symmetric random matrices with non-positive off-diagonal elements, a universal scaling between the eigenvector and matrix elements exists. Namely, each element of the eigenvector of ground states linearly correlates with the sum of matrix elements in the corresponding row. Although the conclusion is obtained based on the random matrices, the linear relationship still keeps for regular matrices, in which off-diagonal elements are non-positive. Th…
A new uniform asymptotic approximation for the Wigner $6j$ symbol is given in terms of Wigner rotation matrices ($d$-matrices). The approximation is uniform in the sense that it applies for all values of the quantum numbers, even those near caustics. The derivation of the new approximation is not given, but the geometrical ideas supporting it are discussed and numerical tests are presented, including comparisons with the exact $6j$-symbol and with the Ponzano-Regge approximation.
In these notes we review recent progress (and, in Section \ref{sec:ados}, we announce a new result) concerning the statistical properties of the spectrum of Wigner random matrices.
We derive the leading asymptotic approximation, for low angle θ, of the Wigner rotation matrix elements $d^j_{m_1m_2}(θ)$, uniform in $j,m_1$ and $m_2$. The result is in terms of a Bessel function of integer order. We numerically investigate the error for a variety of cases and find that the approximation can be useful over a significant range of angles. This approximation has application in the partial wave analysis of wavepacket scattering.
We prove that the energy of any eigenvector of a sum of several independent large Wigner matrices is equally distributed among these matrices with very high precision. This shows a particularly strong microcanonical form of the equipartition principle for quantum systems whose components are modelled by Wigner matrices.
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices). We assume that the distribution of the entries have a Gaussian component with variance $N^{-3/4+β}$ for some positive $β>0$. We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics follows the universal Dyson sine kernel.
We show that Wigner semi-circle law holds for Hermitian matrices with dependent entries, provided the deviation of the cumulants from the normalised Gaussian case obeys a simple power law bound in the size of the matrix. To establish this result, we use replicas interpreted as a zero-dimensional quantum field theoretical model whose effective potential obey a renormalisation group equation.
In the first part of these notes, we review some of the recent developments in the study of the spectral properties of Wigner matrices. In the second part, we present a new proof of a Wegner estimate for the eigenvalues of a large class of Wigner matrices. The Wegner estimate gives an upper bound for the probability to find an eigenvalue in an interval $I$, proportional to the size $|I|$ of the interval.
We prove the Wigner-Dyson-Mehta conjecture at fixed energy in the bulk of the spectrum for generalized symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. Previous results concerning the universality of random matrices either require an averaging in the energy parameter or they hold only for Hermitian matrices if the energy parameter is fixed. We develop a homogenization theory of the Dyson Brownian motion and show that microscopic universality follows from mesoscopic statistics.
The beam transfer matrix, often called the $ABCD$ matrix, is a two-by-two matrix with unit determinant, and with three independent parameters. It is noted that this matrix cannot always be diagonalized. It can however be brought by rotation to a matrix with equal diagonal elements. This equi-diagonal matrix can then be squeeze-transformed to a rotation, to a squeeze, or to one of the two shear matrices. It is noted that these one-parameter matrices constitute the basic elements of the Wigner's little group for space-time symmetries of elementary particles. Thus every $ABCD$ matrix can be writt…
Wigner-type randomizations of the tangent spaces of classical symmetric spaces can be thought of as ordinary Wigner matrices on which additional symmetries have been imposed. In particular, they fall within the scope of a framework, due to Schenker and Schulz-Baldes, for the study of fluctuations of Wigner matrices with additional dependencies among their entries. In this contribution, we complement the results of these authors in that we develop a calculus of patterns which makes it possible to control the asymptotic contributions of dihedral non-crossing pair partitions for the Cartan classe…
We extend the random characteristics approach to Wigner matrices whose entries are not required to have a normal distribution. As an application, we give a simple and fully dynamical proof of the weak local semicircle law in the bulk.
We study the universality of the local eigenvalue statistics of Gaussian divisible Hermitian Wigner matrices. These random matrices are obtained by adding an independent GUE matrix to an Hermitian random matrix with independent elements, a Wigner matrix. We prove that Tracy-Widom universality holds at the edge in this class of random matrices under the optimal moment condition that there is a uniform bound on the fourth moment of the matrix elements. Furthermore, we show that universality holds in the bulk for Gaussian divisible Wigner matrices if we just assume finite second moments.
We prove that any finite collection of quadratic forms (overlaps) of general deterministic matrices and eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix has joint Gaussian fluctuations. This can be viewed as the random matrix analogue of the Berry random wave conjecture.
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian random matrices with independent identically distributed entries (Wigner matrices). The matrices are normalized so that the average spacing between consecutive eigenvalues is of order $1/N$. Under suitable assumptions on the distribution of the single matrix element, we first prove that, away from the spectral edges, the empirical density of eigenvalues concentrates around the Wigner semicircle law on energy scales $η\gg N^{-1}$. This result establishes the semicircle law on the optimal scale and it removes a logarithmic factor from our previous result \cite{E…
Consider an $N\times N$ hermitian random matrix with independent entries, not necessarily Gaussian, a so called Wigner matrix. It has been conjectured that the local spacing distribution, i.e. the distribution of the distance between nearest neighbour eigenvalues in some part of the spectrum is, in the limit as $N\to\infty$, the same as that of hermitian random matrices from GUE. We prove this conjecture for a certain subclass of hermitian Wigner matrices.
It is a classical result of Wigner that for an hermitian matrix with independent entries on and above the diagonal, the mean empirical eigenvalue distribution converges weakly to the semicircle law as matrix size tends to infinity. In this paper, we prove analogs of Wigner's theorem for random matrices taken from all infinitesimal versions of classical symmetric spaces. This is a class of models which contains those studied by Wigner and Dyson, along with seven others arising in condensed matter physics. Like Wigner's, our results are universal in that they only depend on certain assumptions a…
We continue investigations of our previous papers, in which there were proved central limit theorems (CLT) for linear eigenvalue statistics Tr f(M_n) and there were found the limiting probability laws for the normalised matrix elements of differential functions f(M_n) of nxn real symmetric Wigner matrices M_n. Here we consider another spectral characteristic of Wigner matrices, namely, Tr f(M_n)A_n, where {A_n, n=1,2,...} is a certain sequence of non-random matrices. We show first that if M_n belongs to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble, then Tr f(M_n)A_n satisfies CLT. Then we consider Wigner …
We prove local laws, i.e. optimal concentration estimates for arbitrary products of resolvents of a Wigner random matrix with deterministic matrices in between. We find that the size of such products heavily depends on whether some of the deterministic matrices are traceless. Our estimates correctly account for this dependence and they hold optimally down to the smallest possible spectral scale.
We prove a CLT for spectra of submatrices of real symmetric and Hermitian Wigner matrices. We show that if in the standard normalization the fourth moment of the off-digonal entries is GOE/GUE-like then the limiting Gaussian process can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields.
We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the second-order correlation function of the characteristic polynomial of a Hermitian Wigner matrix at the edge of the spectrum. We show that the suitably rescaled second-order correlation function is asymptotically given by the Airy kernel, thereby generalizing the well-known result for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Moreover, we obtain similar results for real-symmetric Wigner matrices.
We study large Wigner random matrices in the case when the marginal distributions of matrix entries have heavy tails. We prove that the largest eigenvalues of such matrices have Poisson statistics.
We prove that the linear statistics of the eigenvalues of a Wigner matrix converge to a universal Gaussian process on all mesoscopic spectral scales, i.e. scales larger than the typical eigenvalue spacing and smaller than the global extent of the spectrum.
We introduce kernel estimators for the semicircle law. In this first part of our general theory on the estimators, we prove the consistency and conduct simulation study to show the performance of the estimators. We also point out that Wigner's semicircle law for our new estimators and the classical empirical spectral distributions is still true when the elements of Wigner matrices don't have finite variances but are in the domain of attraction of normal law.
We consider ensembles of $N \times N$ Hermitian Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. Assuming sufficient regularity for the probability density function of the entries, we show that the expectation of the density of states on {\it arbitrarily} small intervals converges to the semicircle law, as $N$ tends to infinity.
We consider a dilute version of the Wigner ensemble of n-dimensional random matrices H such that each row has in average ρ_n non-zero elements. We study asymptotic properties of the spectral norm of H on the scale n^{-2/3} in the limit when ρ_n is of the order n^{-2/3(1+ε)} with ε>0.
We consider two classical ensembles of the random matrix theory: the Wigner matrices and sample covariance matrices, and prove Central Limit Theorem for linear eigenvalue statistics under rather weak (comparing with results known before) conditions on the number of derivatives of the test functions and also on the number of the entries moments. Moreover, we develop a universal method which allows one to obtain automatically the bounds for the variance of differentiable test functions, if there is a bound for the variance of the trace of the resolvent of random matrix. The method is applicable …
For the eigenvalues of principal submatrices of stochastically evolving Wigner matrices, we construct and study the edge scaling limit: a random decreasing sequence of continuous functions of two variables, which at every point has the distribution of the Airy point process. The analysis is based on the methods developed by Soshnikov to study the extreme eigenvalues of a single Wigner matrix.
Spaces $S_ω, S_{\{ω\}}, S_{(ω)}$ of ultradecreasing ultradifferentiable (or for short, ultra-S) functions, depending on a weight $e^{ω(x)}$, are introduced in the context of quantum statistics. The corresponding coefficient spaces in the Fock basis are identified, and it is shown that the Hermite expansion is a tame isomorphism between these spaces. These results are used to link decrease properties of density matrices to corresponding properties of the Wigner distribution.
We show that matrix elements of functions of $N\times N$ Wigner matrices fluctuate on a scale of order $N^{-1/2}$ and we identify the limiting fluctuation. Our result holds for any function $f$ of the matrix that has bounded variation and thus considerably relaxes the regularity requirement imposed in [7,11].
We consider Hermitian random matrices of the form $H = W + λV$, where $W$ is a Wigner matrix and $V$ a diagonal random matrix independent of $W$. We assume subexponential decay for the matrix entries of $W$ and we choose $λ\sim 1$ so that the eigenvalues of $W$ and $λV$ are of the same order in the bulk of the spectrum. In this paper, we prove for a large class of diagonal matrices $V$ that the local deformed semicircle law holds for $H$, which is an analogous result to the local semicircle law for Wigner matrices. We also prove complete delocalization of eigenvectors and other results about t…
This paper is a continuation of our paper "Fluctuations of Matrix Elements of Regular Functions of Gaussian Random Matrices", J. Stat. Phys. (134), 147--159 (2009), in which we proved the Central Limit Theorem for the matrix elements of differential functions of the real symmetric random Gaussian matrices (GOE). Here we consider the real symmetric random Wigner matrices having independent (modulo symmetry conditions) but not necessarily Gaussian entries. We show that in this case the matrix elements of sufficiently smooth functions of these random matrices have in general another limiting law …
We study the eigenvectors of generalized Wigner matrices with subexponential entries and prove that they delocalize at the optimal rate with overwhelming probability. We also prove high probability delocalization bounds with sharp constants. Our proof uses an analysis of the eigenvector moment flow introduced by Bourgade and Yau (2017) to bound logarithmic moments of eigenvector entries for random matrices with small Gaussian components. We then extend this control to all generalized Wigner matrices by comparison arguments based on a framework of regularized eigenvectors, level repulsion, and …
We show that the global fluctuations of spectra of GOE and GUE matrices and their principal submatrices executing Dyson's Brownian motion are Gaussian in the limit of large matrix dimensions. For nested submatrices one obtains a limiting three-dimensional generalized Gaussian process; its restrictions to two-dimensional sections that are monotone in matrix sizes and time moments coincide with the two-dimensional Gaussian Free Field with zero boundary conditions. The proof is by moment convergence, and it extends to more general Wigner matrices and their stochastic evolution.
This paper proves universality of the distribution of the smallest and largest gaps between eigenvalues of generalized Wigner matrices, under some smoothness assumption for the density of the entries. The proof relies on the Erd{\H o}s-Schlein-Yau dynamic approach. We exhibit a new observable that satisfies a stochastic advection equation and reduces local relaxation of the Dyson Brownian motion to a maximum principle. This observable also provides a simple and unified proof of universality in the bulk and at the edge, which is quantitative. To illustrate this, we give the first explicit rate …
In this paper, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for Tracy-Widom law of Wigner matrices. Consider $N \times N$ symmetric Wigner matrices $H$ with $H_{ij} = N^{-1/2} x_{ij}$, whose upper right entries $x_{ij}$ $(1\le i< j\le N)$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with distribution $μ$ and diagonal entries $x_{ii}$ $(1\le i\le N)$ are $i.i.d.$ random variables with distribution $\wt μ$. The means of $μ$ and $\wt μ$ are zero, the variance of $μ$ is 1, and the variance of $\wt μ$ is finite. We prove that Tracy-Widom law holds if and only if $\lim_{s\to \infty}s^4\p(|x_{12}| \ge s)=0$. The s…
In this note, we extend the results about the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices obtained in arXiv:1103.3731 [math.PR] to Wigner matrices with non-i.i.d. entries provided certain Lindeberg type conditions for the fourth moments of the off-diagonal entries and the second moments of the diagonal entries are satisfied. In addition, we relax our conditions on the test functions and require that for some $s>3 \ \int (1+|k|)^{2s}\*|\hat{f}(k)|^2 \* dk <\infty.$
We consider the quadratic form of a general deterministic matrix on the eigenvectors of an $N\times N$ Wigner matrix and prove that it has Gaussian fluctuation for each bulk eigenvector in the large $N$ limit. The proof is a combination of the energy method for the Dyson Brownian motion inspired by [Marcinek, Yau 2020] and our recent multi-resolvent local laws [Cipolloni, Erdős, Schröder 2020].
We prove universality at the edge for rescaled correlation functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit $n\to +\infty$. As a corollary, we show that, after proper rescaling, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. eigenvalues of Wigner random hermitian (resp. real symmetric) matrix weakly converge to the distributions established by Tracy and Widom in G.U.E. (G.O.E.) cases.
We consider ensembles of Wigner matrices, whose entries are (up to the symmetry constraints) independent and identically distributed random variables. We show the convergence of the Stieltjes transform towards the Stieltjes transform of the semicircle law on optimal scales and with the optimal rate. Our bounds improve previous results, in particular from [22,10], by removing the logarithmic corrections. As applications, we establish the convergence of the eigenvalue counting functions with the rate $(\log N)/N$ and the rigidity of the eigenvalues of Wigner matrices on the same scale. These bou…
We consider $N\times N$ symmetric or hermitian random matrices with independent, identically distributed entries where the probability distribution for each matrix element is given by a measure $ν$ with a subexponential decay. We prove that the local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for these matrices coincide with those of the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), respectively, in the limit $N\to \infty$. Our approach is based on the study of the Dyson Brownian motion via a related new dynamics, the local relaxation flow. We also show tha…
We study the fluctuations of the matrix entries of regular functions of Wigner random matrices in the limit when the matrix size goes to infinity. In the case of the Gaussian ensembles (GOE and GUE) this problem was considered by A.Lytova and L.Pastur in J. Stat. Phys., v.134, 147-159 (2009). Our results are valid provided the off-diagonal matrix entries have finite fourth moment, the diagonal matrix entries have finite second moment, and the test functions have four continuous derivatives in a neighborhood of the support of the Wigner semicircle law.
In this paper we consider Wigner random matrices -- symmetric n by n random matrices whose entries are independent identically distributed real random variables. We prove that the probability distribution of one or several eigenvalues close to the center of the spectrum does not depend on the probability distribution of the entries of the matrix and is the same as for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. We make only mild smoothness assumptions on the probability distribution of the entries and assume that the probability distribution of the entries decays polynomially with sufficiently large pow…
We compute the deterministic approximation of products of Sobolev functions of large Wigner matrices $W$ and provide an optimal error bound on their fluctuation with very high probability. This generalizes Voiculescu's seminal theorem [Voiculescu 1991] from polynomials to general Sobolev functions, as well as from tracial quantities to individual matrix elements. Applying the result to $\exp(\mathrm{i} tW)$ for large $t$, we obtain a precise decay rate for the overlaps of several deterministic matrices with temporally well separated Heisenberg time evolutions; thus we demonstrate the thermalis…
We consider $N\times N$ Hermitian Wigner random matrices $H$ where the probability density for each matrix element is given by the density $ν(x)= e^{- U(x)}$. We prove that the eigenvalue statistics in the bulk is given by Dyson sine kernel provided that $U \in C^6(\RR)$ with at most polynomially growing derivatives and $ν(x) \le C e^{- C |x|}$ for $x$ large. The proof is based upon an approximate time reversal of the Dyson Brownian motion combined with the convergence of the eigenvalue density to the Wigner semicircle law on short scales.
These notes provide an introduction to the local semicircle law from random matrix theory, as well as some of its applications. We focus on Wigner matrices, Hermitian random matrices with independent upper-triangular entries with zero expectation and constant variance. We state and prove the local semicircle law, which says that the eigenvalue distribution of a Wigner matrix is close to Wigner's semicircle distribution, down to spectral scales containing slightly more than one eigenvalue. This local semicircle law is formulated using the Green function, whose individual entries are controlled …
We study high moments of truncated Wigner nxn random matrices by using their representation as the sums over the set W of weighted even closed walks. We construct the subset W' of W such that the corresponding sum diverges in the limit of large n and the number of moments proportional to n^{2/3} for any truncation of the order n^{1/6+epsilon}, epsilon>0 provided the probability distribution of the matrix elements is such that its twelfth moment does not exist. This allows us to put forward a hypothesis that the finiteness of the twelfth moment represents the necessary condition for the univers…
We prove a local law and eigenvector delocalization for general Wigner-type matrices. Our methods allow us to get the best possible interval length and optimal eigenvector delocalization in the dense case, and the first results of such kind for the sparse case down to $p=\frac{g(n)\log n}{n}$ with $g(n)\to\infty$. We specialize our results to the case of the Stochastic Block Model, and we also obtain a local law for the case when the number of classes is unbounded.
In this paper we consider $N \times N$ real generalized Wigner matrices whose entries are only assumed to have finite $(2 + \varepsilon)$-th moment for some fixed, but arbitrarily small, $\varepsilon > 0$. We show that the Stieltjes transforms $m_N (z)$ of these matrices satisfy a weak local semicircle law on the nearly smallest possible scale, when $η= \Im (z)$ is almost of order $N^{-1}$. As a consequence, we establish bulk universality for local spectral statistics of these matrices at fixed energy levels, both in terms of eigenvalue gap distributions and correlation functions, meaning that…
The recent paper "Finite size effects in the averaged eigenvalue density of Wigner random-sign real symmetric matrices" by G.S. Dhesi and M. Ausloos [Phys. Rev. E 93 (2016), 062115] uses the replica method to compute the $1/N$ correction to the Wigner semi-circle law for the ensemble of real symmetric random matrices with $0$'s down the diagonal, and upper triangular entries independently chosen from the values $\pm w$ with equal probability. We point out that the results obtained are inconsistent with known results in the literature, as well as with known large $N$ series expansions for the t…
