We generalize the supersymmetry method in Random Matrix Theory to arbitrary rotation invariant ensembles. Our exact approach further extends a previous contribution in which we constructed a supersymmetric representation for the class of norm-dependent Random Matrix Ensembles. Here, we derive a supersymmetric formulation under very general circumstances. A projector is identified that provides the mapping of the probability density from ordinary to superspace. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that setting up the theory in Fourier superspace has considerable advantages. General and exact expressions for the correlation functions are given. We also show how the use of hyperbolic symmetry can be circumvented in the present context in which the non-linear sigma model is not used. We construct exact supersymmetric integral representations of the correlation functions for arbitrary positions of the imaginary increments in the Green functions.
Recently, the supersymmetry method was extended from Gaussian ensembles to arbitrary unitarily invariant matrix ensembles by generalizing the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Here, we complete this extension by including arbitrary orthogonally and unitary-symplectically invariant matrix ensembles. The results are equivalent to, but the approach is different from the superbosonization formula. We express our results in a unifying way. We also give explicit expressions for all one-point functions and discuss features of the higher order correlations.
The class of norm-dependent Random Matrix Ensembles is studied in the presence of an external field. The probability density in those ensembles depends on the trace of the squared random matrices, but is otherwise arbitrary. An exact mapping to superspace is performed. A transformation formula is derived which gives the probability density in superspace as a single integral over the probability density in ordinary space. This is done for orthogonal, unitary and symplectic symmetry. In the case of unitary symmetry, some explicit results for the correlation functions are derived.
There are several methods to treat ensembles of random matrices in symmetric spaces, circular matrices, chiral matrices and others. Orthogonal polynomials and the supersymmetry method are particular powerful techniques. Here, we present a new approach to calculate averages over ratios of characteristic polynomials. At first sight paradoxically, one can coin our approach "supersymmetry without supersymmetry" because we use structures from supersymmetry without actually mapping onto superspaces. We address two kinds of integrals which cover a wide range of applications for random matrix ensemble…
In the last few years, the supersymmetry method was generalized to real-symmetric, Hermitean, and Hermitean self-dual random matrices drawn from ensembles invariant under the orthogonal, unitary, and unitary symplectic group, respectively. We extend this supersymmetry approach to chiral random matrix theory invariant under the three chiral unitary groups in a unifying way. Thereby we generalize a projection formula providing a direct link and, hence, a `short cut' between the probability density in ordinary space and the one in superspace. We emphasize that this point was one of the main probl…
We suggest a method of studying the joint probability density (JPD) of an eigenvalue and the associated 'non-orthogonality overlap factor' (also known as the 'eigenvalue condition number') of the left and right eigenvectors for non-selfadjoint Gaussian random matrices of size $N\times N$. First we derive the general finite $N$ expression for the JPD of a real eigenvalue $λ$ and the associated non-orthogonality factor in the real Ginibre ensemble, and then analyze its 'bulk' and 'edge' scaling limits. The ensuing distribution is maximally heavy-tailed, so that all integer moments beyond normali…
We consider the singular value statistics of products of independent random matrices. In particular we compute the corresponding averages of products of characteristic polynomials. To this aim we apply the projection formula recently introduced for chiral random matrix ensembles which serves as a short cut of the supersymmetry method. The projection formula enables us to study the local statistics where free probability currently fails. To illustrate the projection formula and underlining the power of our approach we calculate the hard edge scaling limit of the Meijer G-ensembles comprising th…
We introduce a family of rotationally invariant random matrix ensembles characterized by a parameter $λ$. While $λ=1$ corresponds to well-known critical ensembles, we show that $λ\ne 1$ describes "Lévy like" ensembles, characterized by power law eigenvalue densities. For $λ> 1$ the density is bounded, as in Gaussian ensembles, but $λ<1$ describes ensembles characterized by densities with long tails. In particular, the model allows us to evaluate, in terms of a novel family of orthogonal polynomials, the eigenvalue correlations for Lévy like ensembles. These correlations differ qualitatively fr…
Correlation functions for matrix ensembles with orthogonal and unitarysymplectic rotation symmetry are more complicated to calculate than in the unitary case. The supersymmetry method and the orthogonal polynomials are two techniques to tackle this task. Recently, we presented a new method to average ratios of characteristic polynomials over matrix ensembles invariant under the unitary group. Here, we extend this approach to ensembles with orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation symmetry. We show that Pfaffian structures can be derived for a wide class of orthogonal and unitary-symplectic r…
We study eigenvectors in the deformed Gaussian unitary ensemble of random matrices $H=W\tilde{H}W$, where $\tilde{H}$ is a random matrix from Gaussian unitary ensemble and $W$ is a deterministic diagonal matrix with positive entries. Using the supersymmetry approach we calculate analytically the moments and the distribution function of the eigenvectors components for a generic matrix $W$. We show that specific choices of $W$ can modify significantly the nature of the eigenvectors changing them from extended to critical to localized. Our analytical results are supported by numerical simulations…
We construct ensembles of random integrable matrices with any prescribed number of nontrivial integrals and formulate integrable matrix theory (IMT) -- a counterpart of random matrix theory (RMT) for quantum integrable models. A type-M family of integrable matrices consists of exactly N-M independent commuting N-by-N matrices linear in a real parameter. We first develop a rotationally invariant parametrization of such matrices, previously only constructed in a preferred basis. For example, an arbitrary choice of a vector and two commuting Hermitian matrices defines a type-1 family and vice ver…
We generalize the recently discovered relationship between JT gravity and double-scaled random matrix theory to the case that the boundary theory may have time-reversal symmetry and may have fermions with or without supersymmetry. The matching between variants of JT gravity and matrix ensembles depends on the assumed symmetries. Time-reversal symmetry in the boundary theory means that unorientable spacetimes must be considered in the bulk. In such a case, the partition function of JT gravity is still related to the volume of the moduli space of conformal structures, but this volume has a quant…

There are some distinguished ensembles of non-Hermitian random matrices for which the joint PDF can be written down explicitly, is unchanged by rotations, and furthermore which have the property that the eigenvalues form a Pfaffian point process. For these ensembles, in which the elements of the matrices are either real, or real quaternion, the kernel of the Pfaffian is completely determined by certain skew orthogonal polynomials, which permit an expression in terms of averages over the characteristic polynomial, and the characteristic polynomial multiplied by the trace. We use Schur polynomia…
We develop a supersymmetric field theoretical description of the Gaussian ensemble of the almost diagonal Hermitian Random Matrices. The matrices have independent random entries H_{ij} with parametrically small off-diagonal elements H_{ij}/H_{ii} ~ B << 1. We derive a regular virial expansion of correlation functions in the number of ``interacting'' supermatrices associated with different sites in the real space and demonstrate that the perturbation theory constructed in this way is controlled by a small parameter B. General form of the integral expression for the m-th virial coefficient gover…
We introduce and solve exactly a family of invariant 2x2 random matrices, depending on one parameter η, and we show that rotational invariance and real Dyson index βare not incompatible properties. The probability density for the entries contains a weight function and a multiple trace-trace interaction term, which corresponds to the representation of the Vandermonde-squared coupling on the basis of power sums. As a result, the effective Dyson index β_{eff} of the ensemble can take any real value in an interval. Two weight functions (Gaussian and non-Gaussian) are explored in detail and the con…
We study heavy-tailed Hermitian random matrices that are unitarily invariant. The invariance implies that the eigenvalue and eigenvector statistics are decoupled. The motivating question has been whether a freely stable random matrix has stable eigenvalue statistics for the largest eigenvalues in the tail. We investigate this question through the use of both numerical and analytical means, the latter of which makes use of the supersymmetry method. A surprising behaviour is uncovered in that a freely stable random matrix does not necessarily yield stable statistics and if it does then it might …
This work identifies a solvable (in the sense that spectral correlation functions can be expressed in terms of orthogonal polynomials), rotationally invariant random matrix ensemble with a logarithmic weakly confining potential. The ensemble, which can be interpreted as a transformed Jacobi ensemble, is in the thermodynamic limit characterized by a Lorentzian eigenvalue density. It is shown that spectral correlation functions can be expressed in terms of the nonclassical Gegenbauer polynomials $C_n^{(-1/2)}(x)$ with $n \ge 2$, which have been proven to form a complete orthogonal set with respe…
We present an analytic expression of the nonperturbative free energy of a double-well supersymmetric matrix model in its double scaling limit, which corresponds to two-dimensional type IIA superstring theory on a nontrivial Ramond-Ramond background. To this end we draw upon the wisdom of random matrix theory developed by Tracy and Widom, which expresses the largest eigenvalue distribution of unitary ensembles in terms of a Painleve II transcendent. Regularity of the result at any value of the string coupling constant shows that the third-order phase transition between a supersymmetry-preservin…
An exact map was established by Lacroix-A-Chez-Toine, Majumdar, and Schehr in [44] between the $N$ complex eigenvalues of complex non-Hermitian random matrices from the Ginibre ensemble, and the positions of $N$ non-interacting Fermions in a rotating trap in the ground state. An important quantity is the statistics of the number of Fermions $\mathcal{N}_a$ in a disc of radius $a$. Extending the work [44] covering Gaussian and rotationally invariant potentials $Q$, we present a rigorous analysis in planar complex and symplectic ensembles, which both represent 2D Coulomb gases. We show that the …
