We generalize the recently discovered relationship between JT gravity and double-scaled random matrix theory to the case that the boundary theory may have time-reversal symmetry and may have fermions with or without supersymmetry. The matching between variants of JT gravity and matrix ensembles depends on the assumed symmetries. Time-reversal symmetry in the boundary theory means that unorientable spacetimes must be considered in the bulk. In such a case, the partition function of JT gravity is still related to the volume of the moduli space of conformal structures, but this volume has a quantum correction and has to be computed using Reidemeister-Ray-Singer "torsion." Presence of fermions in the boundary theory (and thus a symmetry $(-1)^F$) means that the bulk has a spin or pin structure. Supersymmetry in the boundary means that the bulk theory is associated to JT supergravity and is related to the volume of the moduli space of super Riemann surfaces rather than of ordinary Riemann surfaces. In all cases we match JT gravity or supergravity with an appropriate random matrix ensemble. All ten standard random matrix ensembles make an appearance -- the three Dyson ensembles and the seven Altland-Zirnbauer ensembles. To facilitate the analysis, we extend to the other ensembles techniques that are most familiar in the case of the original Wigner-Dyson ensemble of hermitian matrices. We also generalize Mirzakhani's recursion for the volumes of ordinary moduli space to the case of super Riemann surfaces.
We use the Poincaré series method to compute gravity partition functions associated to SU(N) level 1 WZW models with arbitrarily large numbers of modular invariants. The result is an average over these invariants, with the weights being given by inverting a matrix whose size is of order the number of invariants. For the chosen models, this matrix takes a special form that allows us to invert it for arbitrary size and thereby explicitly calculate the weights of this average. For the identity seed we find that the weights are positive for all N, consistent with each model being dual to an ensemb…
Holevo information is an upper bound for the accessible classical information of an ensemble of quantum states. In this work, we use Holevo information to investigate the ensemble theory interpretation of quantum gravity. We study the Holevo information in random tensor network states, where the random parameters are the random tensors at each vertex. Based on the results in random tensor network models, we propose a conjecture on the holographic bulk formula of the Holevo information in the gravity case. As concrete examples of holographic systems, we compute the Holevo information in the ens…
We calculate bulk and boundary correlators in JT gravity by summing over geometries. The answers are reproduced by computing suitable ensemble averages of correlators of chaotic quantum systems. We then consider bulk correlators at large spatial separations and find that semiclassical decay eventually makes way for erratic oscillations around some nonzero answer. There is no cluster decomposition because of wormholes connecting distant regions. We construct more microscopic versions of JT gravity which are dual to a single quantum system by including a set of branes in the gravitational theory…
Dubrovin establishes the relationship between the GUE partition function and the partition function of Gromov--Witten invariants of the complex projective line. In this paper, we give a direct proof of Dubrovin's result. We also present in a diagram the recent progress on topological gravity and matrix gravity.
Within the thermodynamic model of gravity the dark energy is identified with the energy of collective gravitational interactions of all particles in the universe, which is missing in the standard treatments. For the model-universe we estimate the radiation, baryon and dark energy densities and obtain the values which are close to the current observations. It is shown that total gravitational potential of a particle from the world ensemble is a scale dependent quantity and its value is twice of Newtonian potential. The Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann approximation to general relativity was used to sho…
Gaussian and Chiral Beta-Ensembles, which generalise well known orthogonal (Beta=1), unitary (Beta=2), and symplectic (Beta=4) ensembles of random Hermitian matrices, are considered. Averages are shown to satisfy duality relations like {Beta,N,n} <--> {4/Beta,n,N} for all Beta>0, where N and n respectively denote the number of eigenvalues and products of characteristic polynomials. At the edge of the spectrum, matrix integrals of the Airy (Kontsevich) type are obtained. Consequences on the integral representation of the multiple orthogonal polynomials and the partition function of the formal o…
If a bulk gravitational path integral can be identified with an average of partition functions over an ensemble of boundary quantum theories, then a corresponding moment problem can be solved. We review existence and uniqueness criteria for the Stieltjes moment problem, which include an infinite set of positivity conditions. The existence criteria are useful to rule out an ensemble interpretation of a theory of gravity, or to indicate incompleteness of the gravitational data. We illustrate this in a particular class of 2D gravities including variants of the CGHS model and JT supergravity. The …
We study random walks on ensembles of a specific class of random multigraphs which provide an "effective graph ensemble" for the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) model of quantum gravity. In particular, we investigate the spectral dimension of the multigraph ensemble for recurrent as well as transient walks. We investigate the circumstances in which the spectral dimension and Hausdorff dimension are equal and show that this occurs when rho, the exponent for anomalous behaviour of the resistance to infinity, is zero. The concept of scale dependent spectral dimension in these models is intro…
For ensembles of Hamiltonians that fall under the Dyson classification of random matrices with $β\in \{1,2,4\}$, the low-temperature mean entropy can be shown to vanish as $\langle S(T)\rangle\sim κT^{β+1}$. A similar relation holds for Altland-Zirnbauer ensembles. JT gravity has been shown to be dual to the double-scaling limit of a $β=2$ ensemble, with a classical eigenvalue density $\propto e^{S_0}\sqrt{E}$ when $0 < E \ll 1$. We use universal results about the distribution of the smallest eigenvalues in such ensembles to calculate $κ$ up to corrections that we argue are doubly exponentiall…
The phenomenon of scale dependent spectral dimension has attracted special interest in the quantum gravity community over the last eight years. It was first observed in computer simulations of the causal dynamical triangulation (CDT) approach to quantum gravity and refers to the reduction of the spectral dimension from 4 at classical scales to 2 at short distances. Thereafter several authors confirmed a similar result from different approaches to quantum gravity. Despite the contribution from different approaches, no analytical model was proposed to explain the numerical results as the continu…
This work resolves a longstanding tension between the physically-expected stability of the microcanonical ensemble for gravitating systems and the fact that the known negative mode of the asymptotically flat Schwarzschild black hole decays too rapidly at infinity to affect the ADM energy boundary term at infinity. The key to our study is that we fix an appropriate {\it off-shell} notion of energy, which we obtain by constructing the microcanonical partition function as an integral transform of the canonical partition function. After applying the rule-of-thumb for Wick rotations from our recent…
We analyze the expectation value of observables in a scalar theory on the fuzzy two sphere, represented as a generalized hermitian matrix model. We calculate explicitly the form of the expectation values in the large-N limit and demonstrate that, for any single kind of field (matrix), the distribution of its eigenvalues is still a Wigner semicircle but with a renormalized radius. For observables involving more than one type of matrix we obtain a new distribution corresponding to correlated Wigner semicircles.
We continue the analysis of the spectral curve of the normal random matrix ensemble, introduced in an earlier paper. Evolution of the full quantum curve is given in terms of compatibility equations of independent flows. The semiclassical limit of these flows is expressed through canonical differential forms of the spectral curve. We also prove that the semiclassical limit of the evolution equations is equivalent to Whitham hierarchy.
Maximum entropy principle and Souriau's symplectic generalization of Gibbs states have provided crucial insights leading to extensions of standard equilibrium statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. In this brief contribution, we show how such extensions are instrumental in the setting of discrete quantum gravity, towards providing a covariant statistical framework for the emergence of continuum spacetime. We discuss the significant role played by information-theoretic characterizations of equilibrium. We present the Gibbs state description of the geometry of a tetrahedron and its quantizati…
In this paper we construct a class of random matrix ensembles labelled by a real parameter $α\in (0,1)$, whose eigenvalue density near zero behaves like $|x|^α$. The eigenvalue spacing near zero scales like $1/N^{1/(1+α)}$ and thus these ensembles are representatives of a {\em continous} series of new universality classes. We study these ensembles both in the bulk and on the scale of eigenvalue spacing. In the former case we obtain formulas for the eigenvalue density, while in the latter case we obtain approximate expressions for the scaling functions in the microscopic limit using a very simp…
For the first time, a gravitational calculation was recently shown to yield the Page curve for the entropy of Hawking radiation, consistent with unitary evolution. However, the calculation takes as essential input Hawking's result that the radiation entropy becomes large at late times. We call this apparent contradiction the state paradox. We exhibit its manifestations in standard and doubly-holographic settings, with and without an external bath. We clarify which version(s) of the Ryu-Takayanagi prescription apply in each setting. We show that the two possible homology rules in the presence o…
By appropriate scaling of coupling constants a one-parameter family of ensembles of two-dimensional geometries is obtained, which interpolates between the ensembles of (generalized) causal dynamical triangulations and ordinary dynamical triangulations. We study the fractal properties of the associated continuum geometries and identify both global and local Hausdorff dimensions.
This article is intended to provide a pedagogical introduction to the supersymmetry method for performing ensemble-averaging in Gaussian random-matrix theory. The method is illustrated by a detailed calculation of the simplest non-trivial physical quantity, namely, the second-order correlation in the density of states for two different energies within the spectrum (commonly known as the density-density correlator) for a system described by a random Hamiltonian matrix belonging to the Gaussian unitary ensemble.
We resolve the controversial issue of the geometric approach to the black hole thermodynamics. The geometric description of the equilibrium thermodynamics comes from Ruppeiner geometry based on a metric on the thermodynamic state space. For this purpose, we consider the Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole which provides two different ensembles: canonical ensemble for fixed-charge case and grand canonical ensemble for fixed-potential case. Two cases are independent and cannot be mixed into each other. Hence, we calculate different Ruppeiner curvatures for two ensembles. However, we could…
A two-dimensional CFT dual to a semiclassical theory of gravity in three dimensions must have a large central charge $c$ and a sparse low energy spectrum. This constrains the OPE coefficients and density of states of the CFT via the conformal bootstrap. We define an ensemble of CFT data by averaging over OPE coefficients subject to these bootstrap constraints, and show that calculations in this ensemble reproduce semiclassical 3D gravity. We analyze a wide variety of gravitational solutions, both in pure Einstein gravity and gravity coupled to massive point particles, including Euclidean wormh…
We put forward the idea that all the theoretically consistent models of gravity have contributions to the observed gravity interaction. In this formulation, each model comes with its own Euclidean path-integral weight where general relativity (GR) has automatically the maximum weight in high-curvature regions. We employ this idea in the framework of Lovelock models and show that in four dimensions the result is a specific form of the $f(R,G)$ model. This specific $f(R,G)$ satisfies the stability conditions and possesses self-accelerating solutions. Our model is consistent with the local tests …
In this paper we solve two matrix models, using standard and new techniques. The two models are represented by special form of antisymmetric matrices and are classified in the DIII generator ensemble. It is shown that, in the double scaling limit, their free energy has the same behavior as previous models describing oriented and unoriented surfaces. We also found an additional solution for the first model.
We present the Hawking-Page phase diagrams in the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT) massive gravity theory for different solutions, such as the phase transitions between vacuum $\text{AdS}_3$ and BTZ black hole, warped $\text{AdS}_3$ and warped BTZ black hole in grand canonical and in non-local/quadratic ensembles, Lifshitz black hole and the new hairy black hole solutions. We observe that except for the black holes in quadratic ensemble, for other cases in the non-chiral theory of BHT the phase diagrams are symmetric with respect to the direction of angular momentum, as we expected. We conclude …
We calculate wide distance connected correlators in non-gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic random matrix ensembles by solving the loop equation in the 1/N-expansion. The multi-level correlator is shown to be universal in large N limit. We show the algorithm to obtain the connected correlator to an arbitrary order in the 1/N-expansion.
It was proven recently that JT gravity can be defined as an ensemble of L x L Hermitian matrices. We point out that the eigenvalues of the matrix correspond in JT gravity to FZZT-type boundaries on which spacetimes can end. We then investigate an ensemble of matrices with 1<<N<<L eigenvalues held fixed. This corresponds to a version of JT gravity which includes N FZZT type boundaries in the path integral contour and which is found to emulate a discrete quantum chaotic system. In particular this version of JT gravity can capture the behavior of finite-volume holographic correlators at late time…
Some approaches to $2d$ gravity developed for the last years are reviewed. They are physical (Liouville) gravity, topological theories and matrix models. A special attention is paid to matrix models and their interrelations with different approaches. Almost all technical details are omitted, but examples are presented.
We study a new hermitian one-matrix model containing a logarithmic Penner's type term and another term, which can be obtained as a limit from logarithmic terms. For small coupling, the potential has an absolute minimum at the origin, but beyond a certain value of the coupling the potential develops a double well. For a higher critical value of the coupling, the system undergoes a large $N$ third-order phase transition.
We relate Nekrasov partition functions, with arbitrary values of $ε_1,ε_2$ parameters, to matrix models for $β$-ensembles. We find matrix models encoding the instanton part of Nekrasov partition functions, whose measure, to the leading order in $ε_2$ expansion, is given by the Vandermonde determinant to the power $β=-ε_1/ε_2$. An additional, trigonometric deformation of the measure arises in five-dimensional theories. Matrix model potentials, to the leading order in $ε_2$ expansion, are the same as in the $β=1$ case considered in 0810.4944 [hep-th]. We point out that potentials for massive hyp…
Starting with the well-known Nambu-Goto action for an N-extended body system the propagator in the microcanonical ensemble is explicitly computed. This propagator is independent of the temperature and, in contrast with the previous references, takes account on all the non-local effects produced by the extended objects (e.g., strings) in interaction. The relation between relativistic quantum field theories in the microcanonical approach and the pure S-matrix formulation is stablished and analyzed.
The Hilbert space of a quantum system with internal global symmetry $G$ decomposes into sectors labelled by irreducible representations of $G$. If the system is chaotic, the energies in each sector should separately resemble ordinary random matrix theory. We show that such "sector-wise" random matrix ensembles arise as the boundary dual of two-dimensional gravity with a $G$ gauge field in the bulk. Within each sector, the eigenvalue density is enhanced by a nontrivial factor of the dimension of the representation, and the ground state energy is determined by the quadratic Casimir. We study the…

We address the construction of stable random matrix ensembles as the generalization of the stable random variables (Levy distributions). With a simple method we derive the Cauchy case, which is known to have remarkable properties. These properties allow for such an intuitive method -that relies on taking traces- to hold. Approximate but general results regarding the other distributions are derived as well. Some of the special properties of these ensembles are evidenced by showing partial failure of mean-field approaches. To conclude, we compute the confining potential that gives a Gaussian den…
For the unitary ensembles of $N\times N$ Hermitian matrices associated with a weight function $w$ there is a kernel, expressible in terms of the polynomials orthogonal with respect to the weight function, which plays an important role. For the orthogonal and symplectic ensembles of Hermitian matrices there are $2\times2$ matrix kernels, usually constructed using skew-orthogonal polynomials, which play an analogous role. These matrix kernels are determined by their upper left-hand entries. We derive formulas expressing these entries in terms of the scalar kernel for the corresponding unitary en…
