We resolve the controversial issue of the geometric approach to the black hole thermodynamics. The geometric description of the equilibrium thermodynamics comes from Ruppeiner geometry based on a metric on the thermodynamic state space. For this purpose, we consider the Reissner-Nordström-AdS (RN-AdS) black hole which provides two different ensembles: canonical ensemble for fixed-charge case and grand canonical ensemble for fixed-potential case. Two cases are independent and cannot be mixed into each other. Hence, we calculate different Ruppeiner curvatures for two ensembles. However, we could not find the consistent behaviors of Ruppeiner curvature corresponding to those of heat capacity. Alternatively, instead of the Ruppeiner curvature, we newly propose the curvature scalar in the 2D dilaton gravity approach which shows the features of extremal, Davies and minimum temperature points of RN-AdS black hole, clearly.
The Ruppeiner metric as determined by the Hessian of the Gibbs surface provides a geometric description of thermodynamic systems in equilibrium. An interesting example is a black hole in equilibrium with its own Hawking radiation. In this article, we present results from the Ruppeiner study of various black hole families from different gravity theories e.g. 2D dilaton gravity, BTZ, general relativity and higher-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell gravity.
The Ruppeiner geometry and the fluctuation for a four-dimensional charged AdS black hole in the framework of the extensive thermodynamics have been investigated. By fixing the AdS radius of Vissers construction, the extensive thermodynamics of the RN-AdS black hole is established, and the central charge plays the role of particle number. With the thermodynamic variables density, we reexamine the phase transition of the black hole, and the result will hold for the black holes under different gravitational models. Moreover, we have studied the Ruppeiner geometry and the black hole fluctuation, a…
Due to the non-independence of entropy and thermodynamic volume for spherically symmetric black holes in the AdS spacetime, when applying the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry theory to these black holes, we often encounter an unavoidable problem of the singularity about the line element of thermodynamic geometry. In this paper, we propose a basic and natural scheme for dealing with the thermodynamic geometry of spherically symmetric AdS black holes. We point out that enthalpy, not internal energy, is the fundamental thermodynamic characteristic function for the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry…
We investigate thermodynamic curvatures of the Kerr and Reissner-Nordström (RN) black holes in spacetime dimensions higher than four. These black holes possess thermodynamic geometries similar to those in four dimensional spacetime. The thermodynamic geometries are the Ruppeiner geometry and the conformally related Weinhold geometry. The Ruppeiner geometry for $d=5$ Kerr black hole is curved and divergent in the extremal limit. For $d \geq 6$ Kerr black hole there is no extremality but the Ruppeiner curvature diverges where one suspects that the black hole becomes unstable. The Weinhold geomet…
In this paper, we first obtain the ($n+1$)-dimensional dilaton-Lifshitz black hole (BH) solutions in the presence of Born-Infeld (BI) electrodynamics. We find that there are two different solutions for $z=n+1$ and $z\neq n+1$ cases ($z$ is dynamical critical exponent). We show that the thermodynamics first law is satisfied for both cases. Then, we turn to study different phase transitions (PTs) for our BHs. We start with study of Hawking-Page PT for both linearly and BI charged BHs. After that, we discuss the PTs inside the BHs. We present the improved Davies quantities and prove that the PT p…
We show that the notion of "Hookean law" $F=kx$, suitably defined in asymptotically flat singly spinning Myers-Perry black hole spacetimes in dimensions $d\geqslant 5$, is related to the Emparan-Myers fragmentation (splitting of a black hole into two becomes thermodynamically preferable). Specifically, the values of black hole parameters when fragmentation occurs correspond to the maximal value of $F$. Furthermore this always happens before $F$ reaches $1/4$ in Planck units. These results suggest that a version of "maximum force conjecture" may be relevant for black hole thermodynamics. We als…
In this talk we present the latest results from our ongoing project on geometro-thermodynamics (also known as information geometry of thermodynamics or Ruppeiner geometry) of dilaton BHs in 4D in both Einstein and string frames and a dyonic dilaton BH and at the end we report very briefly results from this approach to the 2D dilaton BHs.
In some recent studies \cite{aman1, aman2, aman3}, Aman {\it et al.} used the Ruppeiner scalar as a measure of underlying interactions of Reissner-Nordström black holes, indicating that it is a non-interacting statistical system for which classical thermodynamics could be used at any scale. Here, we show that if we use the complete set of thermodynamic variables, a non-flat state space will be produced. Furthermore, the Ruppeiner curvature diverges at extremal limits, as it would for other types of black holes.
Charged dilatonic black hole (BH) has rather rich phase diagrams which may contain zeroth-order, first-order as well as reentrant phase transitions (RPTs) depending on the value of the coupling constant $α$ between the electromagnetic field and the dilaton. We try to give a microscopic explanation for these phase transitions by adopting Ruppeiner's approach. By studying the behaviors of the Ruppeiner invariant $R$ along the co-existing lines, we find that the various phase transitions may be qualitatively well explained as a result of two competing factors: the first one is the low-temperature…
Thermodynamic fluctuation metrics in Ruppeiner's formalism are worked out for Kerr-AdS black holes in the extended state space. The implications of constraints upon the state space geometry and their correspondence with thermodynamical ensembles are explicitly worked out in the most general setting. The state space scalar curvature for a given ensemble is found to be sensitive to the instabilities/phase transitions therein. In particular, it is found that the appropriate Ruppeiner scalar curvature does encode critical phenomena in the Kerr-AdS black holes. A detailed study is undertaken of the…
Ruppeiner geometry has been found to be a novel promising approach to uncover the microstructure of fluid systems and black holes. In this work, combining with the micro model of the Van der Waals fluid, we shall propose a first microscopic interpretation for the empirical observation of Ruppeiner geometry. Then employing the microscopic interpretation, we disclose the potential microstructure for the anti-de Sitter black hole systems. Of particular interest, we obtain the microscopic interaction potentials for the underlying black hole molecules. This significantly strengthens the study towar…
Taking the quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect into account, we study the black hole phase transition and Ruppeiner geometry for the Euler-Heisenberg anti-de Sitter black hole in the extended phase space. For negative and small positive QED parameter, we observe a small/large black hole phase transition and reentrant phase transition, respectively. While a large positive value of the QED parameter ruins the phase transition. The phase diagrams for each case are explicitly exhibited. Then we construct the Ruppeiner geometry in the thermodynamic parameter space. Different features of the corres…
In this paper we show that the vanishing of the scalar curvature of Ruppeiner-like metrics does not characterize the ideal gas. Furthermore, we claim through an example that flatness is not a sufficient condition to establish the absence of interactions in the underlying microscopic model of a thermodynamic system, which poses a limitation on the usefulness of Ruppeiner's metric and conjecture. Finally, we address the problem of the choice of coordinates in black hole thermodynamics. We propose an alternative energy representation for Kerr-Newman black holes that mimics fully Weinhold's approa…
In this paper, we study the thermodynamic geometry of charged Gauss-Bonnet black holes (and Reissner-Nordström black holes, for the sake of comparison) in AdS: in both $(T,V)$- and $(S,P)$-planes. The thermodynamic phase space is known to have an underlying contact and metric structure; Ruppeiner geometry then naturally arises in this framework. Sign of Ruppeiner curvature can be used to probe the nature of interactions between the black hole microstructures. It is found that there are both attraction and repulsion dominated regions which are in general determined by the electric charge, Gauss…
We study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black hole in $AdS_5\times{S^5}$ spacetime by treating the cosmological constant as the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the chemical potential is always negative in the stable branch of black hole thermodynamics and it has a chance to be positive, but appears in the unstable branch. We calculate scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric and Quevedo metric, respectively and we f…
In this paper, we study thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a black hole surrounded by the perfect fluid in Rastall theory. In particular, we calculate the physical quantity like mass, temperature and heat capacity of the system for two different cases. From the resulting heat capacity, we emphasize stability of the system. Following Weinhold, Ruppiner, Quevedo and HPEM formalism, thermodynamic geometry of this black hole in Rastall gravity is also analyzed. We find that the singular points of the curvature scalar of Ruppeiner and HPEM metrics entirely coincides with zero points of th…
We study the thermodynamics and thermodynamic geometry of a five-dimensional Reissner-Nordström-AdS black hole in the extended phase space by treating the cosmological constant as being related to the number of colors in the boundary gauge theory and its conjugate quantity as the associated chemical potential. It is found that the contribution of the charge of the black hole to the chemical potential is always positive and the existence of charge make the chemical potential become positive more easily. We calculate the scalar curvatures of the thermodynamical Weinhold metric, Ruppeiner metric …
Thermodynamic geometry analysis of interesting Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 111302 (2015)] for charged AdS black holes, which is based on studying the Ruppeiner invariant behavior is not correct and the authors made a mistake in calculating this quantity. In the present Letter, we address the correct Ruppeiner scalar curvature and reveal the correct possible microscopic properties of 4-dimensional charged AdS black holes arise from it. Some of these properties have not been discussed in pointed out Letter.
In this paper, we consider a linearly charged dilatonic black holes and study their thermodynamical behavior in the context of phase transition and thermodynamic geometry. We show that, depending on the values of the parameters, these type of black holes may enjoy two types of phase transition. We also find that there are three critical behaviors near the critical points for these black holes; nonphysical unstable to physical stable, large to small, and small to large black holes phase transition. Next, we employ a thermodynamical metric for studying thermodynamical geometry of these black hol…
We analyse in detail the thermodynamics in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles of a class of non-asymptotically flat black holes of the Einstein-(anti) Maxwell-(anti) Dilaton theory in 4D with spherical symmetry. We present the first law of thermodynamics, the thermodynamic analysis of the system through the geometrothermodynamics methods, Weinhold, Ruppeiner, Liu-Lu-Luo-Shao and the most common, that made by the specific heat. The geometric methods show a curvature scalar identically zero, which is incompatible with the results of the analysis made by the non null specific heat, which…
Originally considered for van der Waals fluids and charged black holes [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 071103 (2019)], we extend and generalize our approach to higher-dimensional charged AdS black holes. Beginning with thermodynamic fluctuations, we construct the line element of the Ruppeiner geometry and obtain a universal formula for the scalar curvature $R$. We first review the thermodynamics of a van der Waals fluid and calculate the coexistence and spinodal curves. From this we are able to clearly display the phase diagram. Notwithstanding the invalidity of the equation of state in the coexistence…
We relate various black hole solutions in the near-horizon region to black hole solutions in two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories in order to argue that thermodynamics of black holes in D>=4 can be effectively described by thermodynamics of black holes in two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of single-charged dilatonic black holes and dilatonic p-branes with an arbitrary dilaton coupling parameter in arbitrary spacetime dimensions are exactly reproduced by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the two-dimensional black hole in the associated t…
Using the new normalized thermodynamic scalar curvature, we investigate the microstructures and phase transitions of black holes in massive gravity for horizons of various topologies. We find that the graviton mass enhances the repulsive interactions of small black holes and weakens the attractive interactions of large black holes, with possiblity of new repulsive regions for microstructures in phase space. In addition, the repulsive interactions of small black hole are strong for spherical topology, followed by flat and hyperbolic topology; while, the attractive interactions of large black ho…
We study thermodynamics of (1+1) dimensional dilatonic black holes in global embedding Minkowski space scheme. Exploiting geometrical entropy correction we construct consistent entropy for the charged dilatonic black hole. Moreover, (1+1) dilatonic black holes with higher order terms are shown to possess (3+2) global flat embedding structures regardless of the details of the lapse function, and to yield a generic entropy.
An important phase transition in black hole thermodynamics is associated with the divergence of the specific heat with fixed charge and angular momenta, yet one can demonstrate that neither Ruppeiner's entropy metric nor Weinhold's energy metric reveals this phase transition. In this paper, we introduce a new thermodynamical metric based on the Hessian matrix of several free energy. We demonstrate, by studying various charged and rotating black holes, that the divergence of the specific heat corresponds to the curvature singularity of this new metric. We further investigate metrics on all ther…
All thermodynamic quantities of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of two dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The dual relations of four thermodynamic laws are also established. Furthermore, the near-horizon thermodynamics of the extremal RN black hole is completely described by the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory which is obtained by perturbing around the AdS$_2$-horizon.
Thermodynamic geometry is applied to the Born-Infeld-anti-de Sitter black hole (BIAdS) in the four dimensions, which is a nonlinear generalization of the Reissner-NorstrÄom-AdS black hole (RNAdS). We compute the Weinhold as well as the Ruppeiner scalar curvature and find that the singular points are not the same with the ones obtained using the heat capacity. Legendre-invariant metric proposed by Quevedo and the metric obtained by using the free energy as the thermodynamic potential are obtained and the corresponding scalar curvatures diverge at the Davies points.
We numerically reanalyze static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system with a dilaton potential $m_{d}^{2}ϕ^{2}$. We investigate thermodynamic properties for various dilaton coupling constants and find that thermodynamic properties change at a critical dilaton mass $m_{d,crit}$. For $m_{d}\geq m_{d,crit}$, the black hole becomes an extreme solution for a nonzero horizon radius $r_{h,ex}$ as the Reissner-Nordström black hole. However, if $m_{d}$ is nearly equal to $m_{d,crit}$, there appears a solution of smaller horizon radius than $r_{h,ex}$. For …
New charged solutions describing black holes with squashed horizons in 5D dilaton gravity are presented. The black hole spacetimes are asymptotically locally flat and have a spacial infinity $R\times S^1\hookrightarrow S^2$. The solutions are analyzed and their thermodynamics is discussed by using the counterterm method.
In the present paper we study the long-standing problem for the thermodynamics of magnetized dilaton black holes. For this purpose we construct an exact solution describing a rotating charged dilaton black hole immersed in an external magnetic field and discuss its basic properties. We derive a Smarr-like relation and the thermodynamics first law for these magnetized black holes. The novelty in the thermodynamics of the magnetized black holes is the appearance of new terms proportional to the magnetic momentum of the black holes in the Smarr-like relation and the first law.
We present a formalism for studying the thermodynamics of black holes in dilaton gravity. The thermodynamic variables are defined on a quasilocal surface surrounding the black hole system and are obtained from a general class of Lagrangians involving a dilaton. The formalism thus accommodates a large number of possible theories and black hole spacetimes. Many of the thermodynamic quantities are identified from the contribution of the action on the quasilocal boundary. The entropy is found using path integral techniques, and a first law of thermodynamics is obtained. As an illustration, we calc…
We derive the first law of black rings thermodynamics in n-dimensional Einstein dilaton gravity with additional (p+1)-form field strength being the simplest generalization of five-dimensional theory containing a stationary black ring solution with dipole charge. It was done by means of choosing any cross section of the event horizon to the future of the bifurcation surface.
We present a detailed analysis of the thermodynamics of exact asymptotically flat hairy black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We compute the regularized action, quasilocal stress tensor, and conserved charges by using a `counterterm method' similar to the one extensively used in the AdS-CFT duality. In the presence of a non-trivial dilaton potential that vanishes at the boundary we prove that, for some range of parameters, there exist thermodynamically stable black holes in the grand canonical and canonical ensembles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a therm…
A static spherically symmetric solution is obtained and examined in the framework of Einstein-power-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. To derive this exact solution a dilaton potential $V(Φ)$ is taken into account. Thermodynamics of the black hole is also studied, namely we have obtained and investigated the temperature and heat capacity of the black hole which has allowed us characterize the stability of the black hole. Using the framework of the extended thermodynamic phase space we have derived the equation of state for the black hole. We have studied the Gibbs free energy of the black hole, which …
In this work we study thermodynamics of 2+1-dimensional static black holes with a nonlinear electric field. Besides employing the standard thermodynamic approach, we investigate the black hole thermodynamics by studying its thermodynamic geometry. We compute the Weinhold and Ruppeiner metrics and compare the thermodynamic geometry with the standard description on the black hole thermodynamics. We further consider the cosmological constant as an additional extensive thermodynamic variable. In the thermodynamic equilibrium three dimensional space, we compute the efficiency of the heat engine and…
In this paper, we consider a static black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We recapitulate the expression for corrected thermodynamic entropy of this black hole due to small fluctuations around equilibrium. Also, we study the geometrothermodynamics (GTD) of this black hole and investigate the adaptability of the curvature scalar of geothermodynamic methods with phase transition points of this black hole. Moreover, we study the effect of correction parameter on thermodynamic behaviour of this black hole. We observe that the singular point of the curvature scalar of Ruppeiner metric coincides completely …
A static black hole with spherical symmetry is obtained and examined in the framework of Einstein-Yang-Mills-dilaton theory. The obtained black hole solution allowed us to derive and investigate entropy, temperature and heat capacity. To better examine the thermodynamics of the black hole extended phase space is also used. On this ground the equation of state is obtained and studied. We have also investigated the Gibbs free energy and it is shown that below the critical temperature the system demonstrates phase transitions of the first as well as of the zeroth order which is notable feature fo…
A slowly rotating black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity was considered. Having used the obtained solution we investigated thermodynamic functions such as black hole's temperature, entropy and heat capacity. In addition to examine thermodynamic properties of the black hole extended technique was applied. The equation of state of Van der Waals type was obtained and investigated. It has been shown that the given system has phase transitions of the first as well as of the zeroth order for the temperatures below a critical one which is notable feature of the black hole. A coexiste…
In this paper, we will analyze the effect of thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of a charged dilatonic black Saturn. These thermal fluctuations will correct the thermodynamics of the charged dilatonic black Saturn. We will analyze the corrections to the thermodynamics of this system by first relating the fluctuations in the entropy to the fluctuations in the energy. Then, we will use the relation between entropy and a conformal field theory to analyze the fluctuations in the entropy. We will demonstrate that similar physical results are obtained from both these approaches. We will also…
Some thermodynamic properties of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole are studied to get the effective dimension of its corresponding statistical model. For this purpose, we make use of the geometrical approach to the thermodynamics: Considering the black hole as a thermodynamic system with two thermodynamic variables (the mass $M$ and the angular momemtum $J$), we obtain two-dimensional Riemannian thermodynamic geometry described by positive definite Ruppeiner metric. From the thermodynamic curvature we find that the extremal limit is the critical point. The effective spatial dimen…
We derive general formulae for the first order variation of the ADM mass, angular momentum for linear perturbations of a stationary background in Einstein-Maxwell axion-dilaton gravity being the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory. All these variations were expressed in terms of the perturbed matter energy momentum tensor and the perturbed charge current density. Combining these expressions we reached to the form of the {\it physical version} of the first law of black hole dynamics for the stationary black holes in the considered theory being the strong support for the cosmic censo…
We consider the Hamiltonian mechanics and thermodynamics of an eternal black hole in a box of fixed radius and temperature in generic 2-D dilaton gravity. Imposing boundary conditions analoguous to those used by Louko and Whiting for spherically symmetric gravity, we find that the reduced Hamiltonian generically takes the form: $$ H(M,ϕ_+) = σ_0 E(M,ϕ_+) -{N_0\over 2π} S(M) $$ where $E(M,ϕ_+)$ is the quasilocal energy of a black hole of mass $M$ inside a static box (surface of fixed dilaton field $ϕ_+$) and $S(M)$ is the associated classical thermodynamical entropy. $σ_0$ and $N_0$ determine t…
In this paper, we study the phase structure and equilibrium state space geometry of charged topological dilaton black holes in $(n+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. By considering the pairs of parameters $(P\sim V)$ and $(Q\sim U)$ as variables, we analyze the phase structure and critical phenomena of black holes and discuss the relation between the two kinds of critical phenomena. We find that the phase structures and critical phenomena drastically depend on the cosmological constant $l$ (or the static electric charge $Q$ of the black holes), dimensionality $n$ and dilaton field $Φ$.
In this paper, we present charged dilatonic black holes in gravity's rainbow. We study geometric and thermodynamic properties of black hole solutions. We also investigate the effects of rainbow functions on different thermodynamic quantities for these charged black holes in dilatonic gravity's rainbow. Then, we demonstrate that first law of thermodynamics is valid for these solutions. After that, we investigate thermal stability of the solutions using canonical ensemble and analyze the effects of different rainbow functions on thermal stability. In addition, we present some arguments regarding…

A thermodynamic analysis of the black hole solutions coming from the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton theory (EMD) in 4D is done. By consider the canonical and grand-canonical ensemble, we apply standard method as well as a recent method known as Geometrothermodynamics (GTD). We are particularly interested in the characteristics of the so called phantom black hole solutions. We will analyze the thermodynamics of these solutions, the points of phase transition and their extremal limit. Also the thermodynamic stability is analyzed. We obtain a mismatch of the between the results of the GTD method when c…
In this paper, we study topological AdS black branes of $(n+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory and investigate their properties. We use the area law, surface gravity and Gauss law interpretations to find entropy, temperature and electrical charge, respectively. We also employ the modified Brown and York subtraction method to calculate the quasilocal mass of the solutions. We obtain a Smarr-type formula for the mass as a function of the entropy and the charge, compute the temperature and the electric potential through the Smarr-type formula and show that these thermodynamic quantit…
We investigate the thermodynamic geometry and phase transition of Kehagias-Sfetsos black hole in the deformed Horava-Lifshitz gravity with coupling constant $λ=1$. The phase transition in black hole thermodynamics is thought to be associated with the divergence of the capacities. And the structures of these divergent points are studied. We also find that the thermodynamic curvature produced by the Ruppeiner metric is positive definite for all $r_+ > r_-$ and is divergence at $η_2=0$ corresponded to the divergent points of $C_Φ$ and $C_T$. These results suggest that the microstructure of the bl…
We consider Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity with the non-minimal exponential coupling between the dilaton and the Maxwell field emerging from low energy heterotic string theory. The dilaton is endowed with a potential that originates from an electromagnetic Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term in $\mathcal{N}=2$ extended supergravity in four spacetime dimensions. For the case we are interested in, this potential introduces a single parameter $α$. When $α\rightarrow 0$, the static black holes (BHs) of the model are the Gibbons-Maeda-Garfinkle-Horowitz-Strominger (GMGHS) solutions. When $α\rightarrow \in…
The Ruppeiner geometry of thermodynamic fluctuations provides a powerful diagnostic of black hole microstructures. We investigate this for charged AdS black holes and find that while an attractive microstructure interaction dominates for most parameter ranges, a weak repulsive interaction dominates for small black holes of high temperature. This unique property distinguishes the black hole system from that of a Van der Waals fluid, where only attractive microstructure interactions are found. We also find two other novel universal properties for charged black holes. One is that the repulsive in…
We study the thermodynamic properties of a black hole and the Hawking-Page phase transition in the asymptotically anti--de Sitter spacetime in the dilatonic Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravitation. We show how the higher-order curvature terms can influence both the thermodynamic properties and the phase transition. We evaluate both heat capacity and free energy difference to determine the local and global thermodynamic stabilities, respectively. We find that the phase transition occurs from the thermal anti--de Sitter to a small spherical black hole geometry and occurs to a hyperbolic blac…
Taking a thermodynamic perspective, we study the weak gravity conjecture in the context of 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We find closed-form expressions for the corrected thermodynamic quantities in the presence of four-derivative terms in the action, and in particular the charge-to-mass ratio and entropy, for several families of solutions of special magnetic-to-electric charge ratio or dilaton coupling constant. Assuming that dyonic black holes themselves are the conjectured charged states, this places constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the theory which we show are satisfied unde…
