It is shown that there exists a commuting diagram of mappings between dynamics of classical systems on one side and variational principles for geodesic lines in stationary spacetimes of general relativity on the other. The construction of the mappings is based on classical Routh's and Jacobi's procedures and on corresponding inverse procedures which are reviewed in the paper.
Generalizations of the Hamilton-Jacobi and Schrodinger equations for multidimensional variational problems of field theory are deduced. These generalizations are so-called variational differential equations.
The analysis of the covariant brackets on the space of functions on the solutions to a variational problem in the framework of contact geometry initiated in the companion letter Ref.19 is extended to the case of the multisymplectic formulation of the free Klein-Gordon theory and of the free Schrödinger equation.
The formulation of covariant brackets on the space of solutions to a variational problem is analyzed in the framework of contact geometry. It is argued that the Poisson algebra on the space of functionals on fields should be read as a Poisson subalgebra within an algebra of functions equipped with a Jacobi bracket on a suitable contact manifold.
We study higher--order variational derivatives of a generic second--order Lagrangian ${\cal L}={\cal L}(x,ϕ,\partialϕ,\partial^2ϕ)$ and in this context we discuss the Jacobi equation ensuing from the second variation of the action. We exhibit the different integrations by parts which may be performed to obtain the Jacobi equation and we show that there is a particular integration by parts which is invariant. We introduce two new Lagrangians, ${\cal L}_1$ and ${\cal L}_2$, associated to the first and second--order deformations of the original Lagrangian ${\cal L}_0$ respectively; they are in fa…
A variational principle is proposed for obtaining the Jacobi equations in systems admitting a Lagrangian description. The variational principle gives simultaneously the Lagrange equations of motion and the Jacobi variational equations for the system. The approach can be of help in finding constants of motion in the Jacobi equations as well as in analysing the stability of the systems and can be related to the vertical extension of the Lagrangian formalism. To exemplify two of such aspects, we uncover a constant of motion in the Jacobi equations of autonomous systems and we recover the well-kno…
This short note contains an explicit proof of the Jacobi identity for variational Schouten bracket in $Z_2$-graded commutative setup. For the reasoning to be rigorous, it refers to the product bundle geometry of iterated variations (see arXiv:1312.1262 [math-ph]); no ad hoc regularizations occur anywhere in this theory.
Higgs fields on gauge-natural prolongations of principal bundles are defined by invariant variational problems and related canonical conservation laws along the kernel of a gauge-natural Jacobi morphism.
A formal methodology for developing variational principles corresponding to a given nonlinear PDE system is discussed. The scheme is demonstrated in the context of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, systems of first-order conservation laws, and systems of Hamilton- Jacobi equations.
Variational formulations of statics and dynamics of mechanical systems controlled by external forces are presented as examples of variational principles.
The geometric approach [1312.1262] to iterated variations of local functionals -- e.g., of the (master-)action functional -- resulted in an extension of the deformation quantisation technique to the set-up of Poisson models of field theory [IHES/M/15/13]. It also allowed of a rigorous proof ([1312.1262],[1210.0726]) for the main inter-relations between the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) Laplacian $Δ$ and variational Schouten bracket. The ad hoc use of these relations had been a known analytic difficulty in the BV-formalism for quantisation of gauge systems; now achieved, the proof does actually not r…
Characteristics of a Hamilton-Jacobi equation can be seen as action minimizing trajectories of fluid particles. For nonsmooth "viscosity" solutions, which give rise to discontinuous velocity fields, this description is usually pursued only up to the moment when trajectories hit a shock and cease to minimize the Lagrangian action. In this paper we show that for any convex Hamiltonian there exists a uniquely defined canonical global nonsmooth coalescing flow that extends particle trajectories and determines dynamics inside the shocks. We also provide a variational description of the correspondin…
Classical field theory is considered as a theory of unparametrized surfaces embedded in a configuration space, which accommodates, in a symmetric way, spacetime positions and field values. Dynamics is defined by a (Hamiltonian) constraint between multivector-valued generalized momenta, and points in the configuration space. Starting from a variational principle, we derive local equations of motion, that is, differential equations that determine classical surfaces and momenta. A local Hamilton-Jacobi equation applicable in the field theory then follows readily. The general method is illustrated…
The generalization of the Maupertuis principle to second-order Variational Calculus is performed. The stability of the solutions of a natural dynamical system is thus analyzed via the extension of the Theorem of Jacobi. It is shown that the Morse Theory of the trajectories in the dynamical system is identical to the Morse Theory of geodesics in the Jacobi metric, even though the second-variation functionals around the action and the Jacobi length do not coincide. As a representative example, we apply this result to the study of the separatrix solutions of the Garnier System.
We present an analytical solution for triad nonlinear evolution equations with modified Schrödinger terms. An example for application in compressible water waves is presented.
We present a definition of generating functions of canonical relations, which are real functions on symmetric symplectic spaces, discussing some conditions for the presence of caustics. We show how the actions compose by a neat geometrical formula and are connected to the hamiltonians via a geometrically simple variational principle which determines the classical trajectories, discussing the temporal evolution of such ``extended hamiltonians'' in terms of Hamilton-Jacobi-type equations. Simplest spaces are treated explicitly.
By resorting to Noether's Second Theorem, we relate the generalized Bianchi identities for Lagrangian field theories on gauge-natural bundles with the kernel of the associated gauge-natural Jacobi morphism. A suitable definition of the curvature of gauge-natural variational principles can be consequently formulated in terms of the Hamiltonian connection canonically associated with a generalized Lagrangian obtained by contracting field equations.
Analytical (rational) mechanics is the mathematical structure of Newtonian deterministic dynamics developed by D'Alembert, Langrange, Hamilton, Jacobi, and many other luminaries of applied mathematics. Diffusion as a stochastic process of an overdamped individual particle immersed in a fluid, initiated by Einstein, Smoluchowski, Langevin and Wiener, has no momentum since its path is nowhere differentiable. In this exposition, we illustrate how analytical mechanics arises in stochastic dynamics from a randomly perturbed ordinary differential equation $dX_t=b(X_t)dt+εdW_t$ where $W_t$ is a Brown…
A system with anholonomic constraints where the trajectories of physical degrees of freedom are autoparallels on a manifold equipped with a general Cartan connection is discussed. A variational principle for the autoparallel trajectories is derived from the d'Alambert-Lagrange principle for anholonomic constrained systems. A geometrical (coordinate-independent) formulation of the variational principle is given. Its relation to Sedov's anholonomic variational principle for dissipative systems and to Poincaré's variational principle in anholonomic reference frames is established. A modification …
This paper is devoted to discrete mechanical systems subject to external forces. We introduce a discrete version of systems with Rayleigh-type forces, obtain the equations of motion and characterize the equivalence for these systems. Additionally, we obtain a Noether's theorem and other theorem characterizing the Lie subalgebra of symmetries of a forced discrete Lagrangian system. Moreover, we develop a Hamilton-Jacobi theory for forced discrete Hamiltonian systems. These results are useful for the construction of so-called variational integrators, which, as we illustrate with some examples, a…
We discuss a recently proposed variational principle for deriving the variational equations associated to any Lagrangian system. The principle gives simultaneously the Lagrange and the variational equations of the system. We define a new Lagrangian in an extended configuration space ---which we call D'Alambert's--- comprising both the original coordinates and the compatible ``virtual displacements'' joining two solutions of the original system. The variational principle is Hamilton's with the new Lagrangian. We use this formulation to obtain constants of motion in the Jacobi equations of any L…
We present a dequantization procedure based on a variational approach whereby quantum fluctuations latent in the quantum momentum are suppressed. This is done by adding generic local deformations to the quantum momentum operator which give rise to a deformed kinetic term quantifying the amount of ``fuzzyness'' caused by such fluctuations. Considered as a functional of such deformations, the deformed kinetic term is shown to possess a unique minimum which is seen to be the classical kinetic energy. Furthermore, we show that extremization of the associated deformed action functional introduces a…
