By resorting to Noether's Second Theorem, we relate the generalized Bianchi identities for Lagrangian field theories on gauge-natural bundles with the kernel of the associated gauge-natural Jacobi morphism. A suitable definition of the curvature of gauge-natural variational principles can be consequently formulated in terms of the Hamiltonian connection canonically associated with a generalized Lagrangian obtained by contracting field equations.
Starting from a (non-associative) quasi-Poisson structure, the derivation of a Roytenberg-type algebra is presented. From the Jacobi identities of the latter, the most general form of Bianchi identities for fluxes (H,f,Q,R) is then derived. It is also explained how this approach is related to the mathematical theory of quasi-Lie and Courant algebroids.
We derive both {\em local} and {\em global} generalized {\em Bianchi identities} for classical Lagrangian field theories on gauge-natural bundles. We show that globally defined generalized Bianchi identities can be found without the {\em a priori} introduction of a connection. The proof is based on a {\em global} decomposition of the {\em variational Lie derivative} of the generalized Euler--Lagrange morphism and the representation of the corresponding generalized Jacobi morphism on gauge-natural bundles. In particular, we show that {\em within} a gauge-natural invariant Lagrangian variational…
The purpose of this paper is to revisit the Bianchi identities existing for the Riemann and Weyl tensors in the combined framework of the formal theory of systems of partial differential equations (Spencer cohomology, differential systems, formal integrability) and Algebraic Analysis (homological algebra, differential modules, duality). In particular, we prove that the n 2 (n 2 -- 1)(n -- 2)/24 generating Bianchi identities for the Riemann tensor are first order and can be easily described by means of the Spencer cohomology of the first order Killing symbol in arbitrary dimension n $\ge$ 2. Si…
In the first half of the paper, we study in details NS-branes, including the NS5-brane, the Kaluza-Klein monopole and the exotic $5_2^2$- or Q-brane, together with Bianchi identities for NSNS (non)-geometric fluxes. Four-dimensional Bianchi identities are generalized to ten dimensions with non-constant fluxes, and get corrected by a source term in presence of an NS-brane. The latter allows them to reduce to the expected Poisson equation. Without sources, our Bianchi identities are also recovered by squaring a nilpotent $Spin(D,D) \times \mathbb{R}^+$ Dirac operator. Generalized Geometry allows…
In this article, we perform a deep analysis of the Bianchi identities in the two known formulations developed for the four-dimensional effective type IIA supergravity theory with (non-)geometric fluxes. In what we call the `first formulation', fluxes are expressed in the real six-dimensional indices while in the `second formulation', fluxes are written in the cohomology form. We find that the set of flux constraints arising from these two known formulations are not equivalent, and there are missing identities in the cohomology version which need to be supplemented to match with the first formu…
We give a formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) based on a metric algebroid. We derive a covariant completion of the Bianchi identities, i.e. the pre-Bianchi identity in torsion and an improved generalized curvature, and the pre-Bianchi identity including the dilaton contribution. The derived bracket formulation by the Dirac generating operator is applied to the metric algebroid. We propose a generalized Lichnerowicz formula and show that it is equivalent to the pre-Bianchi identities. The dilaton in this setting is included as an ambiguity in the divergence. The projected generalized Lichn…
Starting with minimal requirements from the physical experience with higher gauge theories, i.e. gauge theories for a tower of differential forms of different form degrees, we discover that all the structural identities governing such theories can be concisely recombined into a so-called Q-structure or, equivalently, a Lie infinity algebroid. This has many technical and conceptual advantages: Complicated higher bundles become just bundles in the category of Q-manifolds in this approach (the many structural identities being encoded in the one operator Q squaring to zero), gauge transformations …
In four dimensions, partially massless fields of all spins and depths possess a duality invariance akin to electric-magnetic duality. We construct metric-like gauge invariant curvature tensors for partially massless fields of all integer spins and depths, and show how the partially massless equations of motion can be recovered from first order field equations and Bianchi identities for these curvatures. This formulation displays duality in its manifestly local and covariant form, in which it acts to interchange the field equations and Bianchi identities.
In this text we introduce the torsion of spinor connections. In terms of the torsion we give conditions on a spinor connection to produce Killing vector fields. We relate the Bianchi type identities for the torsion of spinor connections with Jacobi identities for vector fields on supermanifolds. Furthermore, we discuss applications of this notion of torsion.
We present a unified approach to theta-functional solutions of the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations in vacuum. Using Fay's trisecant identity and variational formulas on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces, we establish formulas for the metric functions, the Ernst potential and their derivatives.
Membrane sigma-models have been used for the systematic description of closed strings in non-geometric flux backgrounds. In particular, the conditions for gauge invariance of the corresponding action functionals were related to the Bianchi identities for the fluxes. In this contribution we demonstrate how to express these Bianchi identities in terms of homotopy relations of the underlying $L_\infty$-algebra for the case of the Courant sigma-model. We argue that this result can be utilized in understanding the constraint structure of Double Field Theory and the corresponding membrane sigma-mode…
We characterize the Lie derivative of spinor fields from a variational point of view by resorting to the theory of the Lie derivative of sections of gauge-natural bundles. Noether identities from the gauge-natural invariance of the first variational derivative of the Einstein(--Cartan)--Dirac Lagrangian provide restrictions on the Lie derivative of fields.
This paper aims to revisit the mathematical foundations of both General Relativity and Electromagnetism after one century, in the light of the formal theory of systems of partial differential equations and Lie pseudogroups (D.C. Spencer, 1970) or Algebraic Analysis, namely a mixture of differential geometry and homological algebra (M. Kashiwara, 1970). Among the new results obtained, we may quote: 1) In dimension 4 only, the 9 Bianchi identities that must be satisfied by the 10 components of the Weyl tensor are described by a second order operator and have thus nothing to do with the 20 first …
A generic degenerate Lagrangian system of even and odd fields is examined in algebraic terms of the Grassmann-graded variational bicomplex. Its Euler-Lagrange operator obeys Noether identities which need not be independent, but satisfy first-stage Noether identities, and so on. We show that, if a certain necessary and sufficient condition holds, one can associate to a degenerate Lagrangian system the exact Koszul-Tate complex with the boundary operator whose nilpotency condition restarts all its Noether and higher-stage Noether identities. This complex provides a sufficient analysis of the deg…
We first extend Generalized Differential Calculus (GDC) to higher structures and create generalized G-invariant bilinear forms. In addition, we also focus on developing generalized 2- and 3-connection theories in the framework of GDC. Then, we derive the higher Bianchi-Identities and study the gauge transformations for those generalized higher connections. Finally, we establish the generalized 2- and 3-form Yang-Mills theories based on GDC and obtain the corresponding fields equations.
The classical Pohozaev identity constrains potential solutions of certain semilinear PDE boundary value problems. The Kazdan-Warner identity is a similar necessary condition important for the Nirenberg problem of conformally prescribing scalar curvature on the sphere. For dimensions $n\geq 3$ both identities are captured and extended by a single identity, due to Schoen in 1988. In each of the three cases the identity requires and involves an infinitesimal conformal symmetry. For structures with such a conformal vector field, we develop a very wide, and essentially complete, extension of this p…
We investigate exact and analytic solutions for the field equations in teleparallel dark energy model where the physical space is described by the locally rotational symmetric Bianchi I, Bianchi III and Kantowski-Sachs geometries. We make use of the property that a point-like Lagrangian exist for the description of the field equations and variational symmetries are applied for the construction of invariant functions and conservation laws. The later are used for the derivation of new analytic solutions for the classical field equations and exact function forms for the wavefunction in the quantu…
We consider a class of non-linear PDE systems, whose equations possess Noether identities (the equations are redundant), including non-variational systems (not coming from Lagrangian field theories), where Noether identities and infinitesimal gauge transformations need not be in bijection. We also include theories with higher stage Noether identities, known as higher gauge theories (if they are variational). Some of these systems are known to exhibit linearization instabilities: there exist exact background solutions about which a linearized solution is extendable to a family of exact solution…
