In this work we examine noncommutativity of position coordinates in classical symplectic mechanics and its quantisation. In coordinates $\{q^i,p_k\}$ the canonical symplectic two-form is $ω_0=dq^i\wedge dp_i$. It is well known in symplectic mechanics {\bf\cite{Souriau,Abraham,Guillemin}} that the interaction of a charged particle with a magnetic field can be described in a Hamiltonian formalism without a choice of a potential. This is done by means of a modified symplectic two-form $ω=ω_0-e\F$, where $e$ is the charge and the (time-independent) magnetic field $\F$ is closed: $\dif\F=0$. With this symplectic structure, the canonical momentum variables acquire non-vanishing Poisson brackets: $\{p_k,p_l\} = e F_{kl}(q)$. Similarly a closed two-form in $p$-space $\G$ may be introduced. Such a {\it dual magnetic field} $\G$ interacts with the particle's {\it dual charge} $r$. A new modified symplectic two-form $ω=ω_0-e\F+r\G$ is then defined. Now, both $p$- and $q$-variables will cease to Poisson commute and upon quantisation they become noncommuting operators. In the particular case of a linear phase space ${\bf R}^{2N}$, it makes sense to consider constant $\F$ and $\G$ fields. It is then possible to define, by a linear transformation, global Darboux coordinates: $\{ξ^i,π_k\}= {δ^i}_k$. These can then be quantised in the usual way $[\hatξ^i,\hatπ_k]=i\hbar {δ^i}_k$. The case of a quadratic potential is examined with some detail when $N$ equals 2 and 3.
In order to evaluate the Feynman path integral in noncommutative quantum mechanics, we consider properties of a Lagrangian related to a quadratic Hamiltonian with noncommutative spatial coordinates. A quantum-mechanical system with noncommutative coordinates is equivalent to another one with commutative coordinates. We found connection between quadratic classical Lagrangians of these two systems. We also shown that there is a subclass of quadratic Lagrangians, which includes harmonic oscillator and particle in a constant field, whose connection between ordinary and noncommutative regimes can b…
An introduction is given to some selected aspects of noncommutative geometry. Simple examples in this context are provided by finite sets and lattices. As an application, it is explained how the nonlinear Toda lattice and a discrete time version of it can be understood as generalized sigma-models based on noncommutative geometries. In particular, in this way one achieves a simple understanding of the complete integrability of the Toda lattice. Furthermore, generalized metric structures on finite sets and lattices are briefly discussed.
We study topological aspects of matrix models and noncommutative cohomological field theories (N.C.CohFT). N.C.CohFT have symmetry under the arbitrary infinitesimal noncommutative parameter $θ$ deformation. This fact implies that N.C.CohFT possess a less sensitive topological property than K-theory, but the classification of manifolds by N.C.CohFT has a possibility to give a new view point of global characterization of noncommutative manifolds. To investigate properties of N.C.CohFT, we construct some models whose fixed point loci are given by sets of projection operators. Particularly, the pa…
This work provides a first step towards the construction of a noncommutative geometry for the quantum Hall effect in the continuum. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's we build a spectral triple for the $C^*$-algebra of continuous magnetic operators based on a Dirac operator with compact resolvent. The metric aspects of this spectral triple are studied, and an important piece of Bellissard's theory (the so-called first Connes' formula) is proved.
In~this paper, we construct noncommutative coherent states using various families of unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of $\g$, a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group, that was identified as the kinematical symmetry group of noncommutative quantum mechanics for a system of 2-degrees of freedom in an earlier paper. Likewise described are the degenerate noncommutative coherent states arising from the degenerate UIRs of $\g$. We~then compute the reproducing kernels associated with both these families of coherent states and study Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of the observables…
We review the connection between noncommutative gauge theory, matrix models and fluid mechanical systems. The noncommutative Chern-Simons description of the quantum Hall effect and bosonization of collective fermion states are used as specific examples.
We consider quantum mechanics on the noncommutative spaces characterized by the commutation relations $$ [x_a, x_b] \ =\ iθf_{abc} x_c\,, $$ where $f_{abc}$ are the structure constants of a Lie algebra. We note that this problem can be reformulated as an ordinary quantum problem in a commuting momentum space. The coordinates are then represented as linear differential operators $\hat x_a = -i\hat D_a = -iE_{ab} (p)\, \partial /\partial p_b $. Generically, the matrix $E_{ab}(p)$ represents a certain infinite series over the deformation parameter $θ$: $E_{ab} = δ_{ab} + \ldots$. The deformed Ham…
We investigate the Weyl-Wigner-Gröenewold-Moyal, the Stratonovich and the Berezin group quantization schemes for the space-space noncommutative Heisenberg-Weyl group. We show that the $\star$-product for the deformed algebra of Weyl functions for the first scheme is different than that for the other two, even though their respective quantum mechanics' are equivalent as far as expectation values are concerned, provided that some additional criteria are imposed on the implementation of this process. We also show that it is the $\star$-product associated with the Stratonovich and the Berezin form…
These notes contain a survey of some aspects of the theory of graded differential algebras and of noncommutative differential calculi as well as of some applications connected with physics. They also give a description of several new developments.
When dealing with the classical limit of two quantum mechanical oscillators on a noncommutative configuration space, the limits corresponding to the removal of configuration-space noncommutativity and position-momentum noncommutativity do not commute. We address this behaviour from the point of view of the phase-space localisation properties of the Wigner functions of coherent states under the two limits.
We provide an explicit construction of entangled states in a noncommutative space with nonclassical states, particularly with the squeezed states. Noncommutative systems are found to be more entangled than the usual quantum mechanical systems. The noncommutative parameter provides an additional degree of freedom in the construction by which one can raise the entanglement of the noncommutative systems to fairly higher values beyond the usual systems. Despite of having classical-like behaviour, coherent states in noncommutative space produce little amount of entanglement and therefore they posse…
We study various noncommutative geometric aspects of the compact quantum group SU_q(2) for positive q (not equal to 1), following the suggestion of Connes and his coauthors [CL, CD] for considering the so-called true Dirac operator. However, it turns out that the method of the above references do not extend to the case of positive (not equal to 1) values of q in the sense that the true Dirac operator does not have bounded commutators with "smooth" algebra elements in this case, in contrast to what happens for complex q of modulus 1. Nevertheless, we show how to obtain the canonical volume form…
Connes' functional formula of the Riemannian distance is generalized to the Lorentzian case using the so-called Lorentzian distance, the d'Alembert operator and the causal functions of a globally hyperbolic spacetime. As a step of the presented machinery, a proof of the almost-everywhere smoothness of the Lorentzian distance considered as a function of one of the two arguments is given. Afterwards, using a $C^*$-algebra approach, the spacetime causal structure and the Lorentzian distance are generalized into noncommutative structures giving rise to a Lorentzian version of part of Connes' nonco…
This thesis is designed for a comprehensive review of noncommutative (BPS) solitons with applications to D-brane dynamics including our works. We focus on noncommutative instantons and monopoles and study various aspects of the exact solutions by using Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) and Nahm constructions. Finally we propose noncommutative extensions of integrable systems and soliton theories in lower dimensions in collaboration with Kouichi Toda, which would pioneer a new study area of integrable systems. Appendix is devoted to a brief and systematic review of formal aspects of ADHM/Nah…
In this work we study the differential aspects of the noncommutative geometry for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra which is a 2-cocycle deformation of the group $C^*$-algebra of $\mathbb{R}^2$. This algebra is intimately related to the study of the Quantum Hall Effect in the continuous, and our results aim to provide a new geometric interpretation of the related Kubo's formula. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's, we build an appropriate Fredholm module for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra based on the magnetic Dirac operator which is the square root (à la Dirac) of t…
We consider classical and quantum mechanics related to an additional noncommutativity, symmetric in position and momentum coordinates. We show that such mechanical system can be transformed to the corresponding one which allows employment of the usual formalism. In particular, we found explicit connections between quadratic Hamiltonians and Lagrangians, in their commutative and noncommutative regimes. In the quantum case we give general procedure how to compute Feynman's path integral in this noncommutative phase space with quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians). This approach is applied to a ch…
This is an overview of recent results aimed at developing a geometry of noncommutative tori with real multiplication, with the purpose of providing a parallel, for real quadratic fields, of the classical theory of elliptic curves with complex multiplication for imaginary quadratic fields. This talk concentrates on two main aspects: the relation of Stark numbers to the geometry of noncommutative tori with real multiplication, and the shadows of modular forms on the noncommutative boundary of modular curves, that is, the moduli space of noncommutative tori. To appear in Proc. ICM 2010.
We consider Feynman's path integral approach to quantum mechanics with a noncommutativity in position and momentum sectors of the phase space. We show that a quantum-mechanical system with this kind of noncommutativity is equivalent to the another one with usual commutative coordinates and momenta. We found connection between quadratic classical Hamiltonians, as well as Lagrangians, in their commutative and noncommutative regimes. The general procedure to compute Feynman's path integral on this noncommutative phase space with quadratic Lagrangians (Hamiltonians) is presented. Using this approa…
We study some basic and interesting quantum mechanical systems in dynamical noncommutative spaces in which the space- space commutation relations are position dependent. It is observed that the fundamental objects in the dynamical noncommutative space introduced here are stringlike. We show that the Stark effect can be employed to determine whether the noncommutativity of space is dynamical or non-dynamical. It appears that unlike non-dynamical case there is a fundamental energy $\dfrac{τ\hbar^{2}}{m}$ in this dynamical space.}
Noncommutative field theories are a class of theories beyond the standard model of elementary particle physics. Their importance may be summarized in two facts. Firstly as field theories on noncommutative spacetimes they come with natural regularization parameters. Secondly they are related in a natural way to theories of quantum gravity which typically give rise to noncommutative spacetimes. Therefore noncommutative field theories can shed light on the problem of quantizing gravity. An attractive aspect of noncommutative field theories is that they can be formulated so as to preserve spacetim…
The ground state energy of a scale symmetric system usually does not possess any lower bound, thus making the system quantum mechanically unstable. Self-adjointness and renormalization techniques usually provide the system a scale and thus making the ground state bounded from below. We on the other hand use noncommutative quantum mechanics and exploit the noncommutative parameter Θas a scale for a scale symmetric system. The resulting Hamiltonian for the system then allows an unusual bound state at the threshold of the energy, E=0. Apart from the Hamiltonian \hat{H} we also compute the other t…
We describe a general procedure, based on Gerstenhaber-Schack complexes, for extending to quantized twistor spaces the Donaldson-Friedman gluing of twistor spaces via deformation theory of singular spaces. We consider in particular various possible quantizations of twistor spaces that leave the underlying spacetime manifold classical, including the geometric quantization of twistor spaces originally constructed by the second author, as well as some variants based on noncommutative geometry. We discuss specific aspects of the gluing construction for these different quantization procedures.
Classical nonlinear canonical (Poisson) maps have a distinguished role in quantum mechanics. They act unitarily on the quantum phase space and generate $\hbar$-independent quantum canonical maps. It is shown that such maps act in the noncommutative phase space as dictated by the classical covariance. A crucial observation made is that under the classical covariance the local quantum mechanical picture can become nonlocal in the Hilbert space. This nonlocal picture is made equivalent by the Weyl map to a noncommutative picture in the phase space formulation of the theory. The connection between…
We analyze functional analytic aspects of axiomatic formulations of nonlocal and noncommutative quantum field theories. In particular, we completely clarify the relation between the asymptotic commutativity condition, which ensures the CPT symmetry and the standard spin-statistics relation for nonlocal fields, and the regularity properties of the retarded Green's functions in momentum space that are required for constructing a scattering theory and deriving reduction formulas. This result is based on a relevant Paley-Wiener-Schwartz-type theorem for analytic functionals. We also discuss the po…
We study analytic aspects of U(n) gauge theory over a toric noncommutative manifold $M_θ$. We analyse moduli spaces of solutions to the self-dual Yang-Mills equations on U(2) vector bundles over four-manifolds $M_θ$, showing that each such moduli space is either empty or a smooth Hausdorff manifold whose dimension we explicitly compute. In the special case of the four-sphere $S^4_θ$ we find that the moduli space of U(2) instantons with fixed second Chern number $k$ is a smooth manifold of dimension $8k-3$.
We study several classical like properties of q-deformed nonlinear coherent states as well as nonclassical behaviours of q-deformed version of the Schrodinger cat states in noncommutative space. Coherent states in q-deformed space are found to be minimum uncertainty states together with the squeezed photon distributions unlike the ordinary systems, where the photon distributions are always Poissonian. Several advantages of utilising cat states in noncommutative space over the standard quantum mechanical spaces have been reported here. For instance, the q-deformed parameter has been utilised to…
It is shown by Connes, Douglas and Schwarz that gauge theory on noncommutative torus describes compactifications of M-theory to tori with constant background three-form field. This indicates that noncommutative gauge theories on more general manifolds also can be useful in string theory. We discuss a framework to noncommutative quantum gauge theory on Poisson manifolds by using the deformation quantization. The Kontsevich formula for the star product was given originally in terms of the perturbation expansion and it leads to a non-renormalizable quantum field theory. We discuss the nonperturba…
We consider Feynman-Dyson's proof of Maxwell's equations using the Jacobi identities on the velocity phase space. In this paper we generalize the Feynman-Dyson's scheme by incorporating the non-commutativity between various spatial coordinates along with the velocity coordinates. This allows us to study a generalized class of Hamiltonian systems. We explore various dynamical flows associated to the Souriau form associated to this generalized Feynman-Dyson's scheme. Moreover, using the Souriau form we show that these new classes of generalized systems are volume preserving mechanical systems.
We discuss commuting flows and conservation laws for Lax hierarchies on noncommutative spaces in the framework of the Sato theory. On commutative spaces, the Sato theory has revealed essential aspects of the integrability for wide class of soliton equations which are derived from the Lax hierarchies in terms of pseudo-differential operators. Noncommutative extension of the Sato theory has been already studied by the author and Kouichi Toda, and the existence of various noncommutative Lax hierarchies are guaranteed. In the present paper, we present conservation laws for the noncommutative Lax h…
Spectral triples and quantum statistical mechanical systems are two important constructions in noncommutative geometry. In particular, both lead to interesting reconstruction theorems for a broad range of geometric objects, including number fields, spin manifolds, graphs. There are similarities between the two structures, and we show that the notion of type III sigma-spectral triple, introduced recently by Connes and Moscovici, provides a natural bridge between them. We investigate explicit examples, related to the Bost-Connes quantum statistical mechanical system and to Riemann surfaces and g…
We investigate a U(1) gauge invariant quantum mechanical system on a 2D noncommutative space with coordinates generating a generalized deformed oscillator algebra. The Hamiltonian is taken as a quadratic form in gauge covariant derivatives obeying the nonlinear Dolan-Grady relations. This restricts the structure function of the deformed oscillator algebra to a quadratic polynomial. The cases when the coordinates form the su(2) and sl(2,R) algebras are investigated in detail. Reducing the Hamiltonian to 1D finite-difference quasi-exactly solvable operators, we demonstrate partial algebraization…
Model-theoretic aspects of exotic smoothness were studied long ago uncovering unexpected relations to noncommutative spaces and quantum theory. Some of these relations were worked out in detail in later work. An important point in the argumentation was the forcing construction of Cohen but without a direct application to exotic smoothness. In this article we assign the set-theoretic forcing on trees to Casson handles and characterize small exotic smooth $R^4$ from this point of view. Moreover, we show how models in some Grothendieck toposes can help describing such differential structures in d…
We propose a model of dynamical noncommutative quantum mechanics in which the noncommutative strengths, describing the properties of the commutation relations of the coordinate and momenta, respectively, are arbitrary energy dependent functions. The Schrödinger equation in the energy dependent noncommutative algebra is derived for a two dimensional system for an arbitrary potential. The resulting equation reduces in the small energy limit to the standard quantum mechanical one, while for large energies the effects of the noncommutativity become important. We investigate in detail three cases, …
In this work quantum physics in noncommutative spacetime is developed. It is based on the work of Doplicher et al. which allows for time-space noncommutativity. The Moyal plane is treated in detail. In the context of noncommutative quantum mechanics, some important points are explored, such as the formal construction of the theory, symmetries, causality, simultaneity and observables. The dynamics generated by a noncommutative Schrodinger equation is studied. We prove in particular the following: suppose the Hamiltonian of a quantum mechanical particle on spacetime has no explicit time dependen…
The theory of noncommutative geometry provides an interesting mathematical background for developing new physical models. In particular, it allows one to describe the classical Standard Model coupled to Euclidean gravity. However, noncommutative geometry has mainly been developed using the Euclidean signature, and the typical Lorentzian aspects of space-time, the causal structure in particular, are not taken into account. We present an extension of noncommutative geometry à la Connes suitable the for accommodation of Lorentzian structures. In this context, we show that it is possible to recove…
The set of coherent states for a noncommutative quantum Bianchi I anisotropic cosmology were built to circumvent the absence of a simultaneous set of configuration observables. By extending known methods of path integrals with coherent states to their noncommutative analogues allowed us to obtain the formal expression of the propagator of the theory in terms of the covariant Husimi Q-symbol of the quantum constraint. The analysis of the equations of motion resulting from a steepest descent procedure showed the existence of solutions displaying a minimum value of the volume scaling function whi…
We survey the geometry of Lagrange and Finsler spaces and discuss the issues related to the definition of curvature of nonholonomic manifolds enabled with nonlinear connection structure. It is proved that any commutative Riemannian geometry (in general, any Riemann--Cartan space) defined by a generic off--diagonal metric structure (with an additional affine connection possessing nontrivial torsion) is equivalent to a generalized Lagrange, or Finsler, geometry modeled on nonholonomic manifolds. This results in the problem of constructing noncommutative geometries with local anisotropy, in parti…
This is the first installment of a paper in three parts, where we use noncommutative geometry to study the space of commensurability classes of Q-lattices and we show that the arithmetic properties of KMS states in the corresponding quantum statistical mechanical system, the theory of modular Hecke algebras, and the spectral realization of zeros of L-functions are part of a unique general picture. In this first chapter we give a complete description of the multiple phase transitions and arithmetic spontaneous symmetry breaking in dimension two. The system at zero temperature settles onto a cla…
