This is a revised and condensed version of the paper following the suggestions of the referee(s), and in this form it is concerned with only the true dirac operator, and not the naive one. The author thanks the anonymous referee(s) for pointing out a few errors, which are corrected in this FINAL version
We study various noncommutative geometric aspects of the compact quantum group SU_q(2) for positive q (not equal to 1), following the suggestion of Connes and his coauthors [CL, CD] for considering the so-called true Dirac operator.
However, it turns out that the method of the above references do not extend to the case of positive (not equal to 1) values of q in the sense that the true Dirac operator does not have bounded commutators with "smooth" algebra elements in this case, in contrast to what happens for complex q of modulus 1. Nevertheless, we show how to obtain the canonical volume form, i.e. the Haar state, using the true Dirac operator.
This work provides a first step towards the construction of a noncommutative geometry for the quantum Hall effect in the continuum. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's we build a spectral triple for the $C^*$-algebra of continuous magnetic operators based on a Dirac operator with compact resolvent. The metric aspects of this spectral triple are studied, and an important piece of Bellissard's theory (the so-called first Connes' formula) is proved.
In~this paper, we construct noncommutative coherent states using various families of unitary irreducible representations (UIRs) of $\g$, a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group, that was identified as the kinematical symmetry group of noncommutative quantum mechanics for a system of 2-degrees of freedom in an earlier paper. Likewise described are the degenerate noncommutative coherent states arising from the degenerate UIRs of $\g$. We~then compute the reproducing kernels associated with both these families of coherent states and study Berezin-Toeplitz quantization of the observables…
An introduction is given to some selected aspects of noncommutative geometry. Simple examples in this context are provided by finite sets and lattices. As an application, it is explained how the nonlinear Toda lattice and a discrete time version of it can be understood as generalized sigma-models based on noncommutative geometries. In particular, in this way one achieves a simple understanding of the complete integrability of the Toda lattice. Furthermore, generalized metric structures on finite sets and lattices are briefly discussed.
In order to evaluate the Feynman path integral in noncommutative quantum mechanics, we consider properties of a Lagrangian related to a quadratic Hamiltonian with noncommutative spatial coordinates. A quantum-mechanical system with noncommutative coordinates is equivalent to another one with commutative coordinates. We found connection between quadratic classical Lagrangians of these two systems. We also shown that there is a subclass of quadratic Lagrangians, which includes harmonic oscillator and particle in a constant field, whose connection between ordinary and noncommutative regimes can b…
From a geometrical point of view it is, so far, not sufficiently well understood what should be a "noncommutative principal bundle". Still, there is a well-developed abstract algebraic approach using the theory of Hopf algebras. An important handicap of this approach is the ignorance of topological and geometrical aspects. The aim of this thesis is to develop a geometrically oriented approach to the noncommutative geometry of principal bundles based on dynamical systems and the representation theory of the corresponding transformation group.
We generalize the recently proposed noncommutative ADHM construction to the case of $Γ$-equivariant instantons over $\R^4$, with $Γ$ a Kleinian group. We show that a certain form of the inhomogeneous ADHM equations describes instantons over a noncommutative deformation of the Kleinian orbifold $\C^2/Γ$ and we discuss the relation of this with Nakajima's description of instantons over ALE spaces. In particular, we obtain a noncommutative interpretation of the minimal resolution of Kleinian singularities.
We study topological aspects of matrix models and noncommutative cohomological field theories (N.C.CohFT). N.C.CohFT have symmetry under the arbitrary infinitesimal noncommutative parameter $θ$ deformation. This fact implies that N.C.CohFT possess a less sensitive topological property than K-theory, but the classification of manifolds by N.C.CohFT has a possibility to give a new view point of global characterization of noncommutative manifolds. To investigate properties of N.C.CohFT, we construct some models whose fixed point loci are given by sets of projection operators. Particularly, the pa…
When considered as submanifolds of Euclidean space, the Riemannian geometry of the round sphere and the Clifford torus may be formulated in terms of Poisson algebraic expressions involving the embedding coordinates, and a central object is the projection operator, projecting tangent vectors in the ambient space onto the tangent space of the submanifold. In this note, we point out that there exist noncommutative analogues of these projection operators, which implies a very natural definition of noncommutative tangent spaces as particular projective modules. These modules carry an induced connec…
We investigate the noncommutative gauge theories arising on the worldvolumes of D-branes in non-geometric backgrounds obtained by T-duality from twisted tori. We revisit the low-energy effective description of D-branes on three-dimensional T-folds, examining both cases of parabolic and elliptic twists in detail. We give a detailed description of the decoupling limits and explore various physical consequences of the open string non-geometry. The T-duality monodromies of the non-geometric backgrounds lead to Morita duality monodromies of the noncommutative Yang-Mills theories induced on the D-br…
Together with collaborators, we introduced a noncommutative Riemannian geometry over Moyal algebras and systematically developed it for noncommutative spaces embedded in higher dimensions in the last few years. The theory was applied to construct a noncommutative version of general relativity, which is expected to capture some essential structural features of spacetime at the Planck scale. Examples of noncommutative spacetimes were investigated in detail. These include quantisations of plane-fronted gravitational waves, quantum Schwarzschild spacetime and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime, and…
We use a geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten map between noncommutative and commutative gauge theories to find the expansion of noncommutative Chern-Simons (CS) theory in any odd dimension $D$ and at first order in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$. This expansion extends the classical CS theory with higher powers of the curvatures and their derivatives. A simple explanation of the equality between noncommutative and commutative CS actions in $D=1$ and $D=3$ is obtained. The $θ$ dependent terms are present for $D\geq 5$ and give a higher derivative theory on commutative space reduc…
In this work we study the differential aspects of the noncommutative geometry for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra which is a 2-cocycle deformation of the group $C^*$-algebra of $\mathbb{R}^2$. This algebra is intimately related to the study of the Quantum Hall Effect in the continuous, and our results aim to provide a new geometric interpretation of the related Kubo's formula. Taking inspiration from the ideas developed by Bellissard during the 80's, we build an appropriate Fredholm module for the magnetic $C^*$-algebra based on the magnetic Dirac operator which is the square root (à la Dirac) of t…
We revisit traces of holomorphic families of pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold in view of geometric applications. We then transpose the corresponding analytic constructions to two different geometric frameworks; the noncommutative torus and Hilbert modules. These traces are meromorphic functions whose residues at the poles as well as the constant term of the Laurent expansion at zero (the latter when the family at zero is a differential operator) can be expressed in terms of Wodzicki residues and extended Wodzicki residues involving logarithmic operators. They are therefore loc…
Richard Borcherds proposed an elegant geometric version of renormalized perturbative quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, where Lagrangians are sections of a Hopf algebra bundle over a smooth manifold. However, this framework looses its geometric meaning when Borcherds introduces a (graded) commutative normal product. We present a fully geometric version of Borcherds' quantization where the (external) tensor product plays the role of the normal product. We construct a noncommutative many-body Hopf algebra and a module over it which contains all the terms of the perturbative expansion and…
These notes contain a survey of some aspects of the theory of graded differential algebras and of noncommutative differential calculi as well as of some applications connected with physics. They also give a description of several new developments.
This thesis is designed for a comprehensive review of noncommutative (BPS) solitons with applications to D-brane dynamics including our works. We focus on noncommutative instantons and monopoles and study various aspects of the exact solutions by using Atiyah-Drinfeld-Hitchin-Manin (ADHM) and Nahm constructions. Finally we propose noncommutative extensions of integrable systems and soliton theories in lower dimensions in collaboration with Kouichi Toda, which would pioneer a new study area of integrable systems. Appendix is devoted to a brief and systematic review of formal aspects of ADHM/Nah…
Connes' functional formula of the Riemannian distance is generalized to the Lorentzian case using the so-called Lorentzian distance, the d'Alembert operator and the causal functions of a globally hyperbolic spacetime. As a step of the presented machinery, a proof of the almost-everywhere smoothness of the Lorentzian distance considered as a function of one of the two arguments is given. Afterwards, using a $C^*$-algebra approach, the spacetime causal structure and the Lorentzian distance are generalized into noncommutative structures giving rise to a Lorentzian version of part of Connes' nonco…
We introduced few years ago a new notion of causality for noncommutative spacetimes directly related to the Dirac operator and the concept of Lorentzian spectral triple. In this paper, we review in a non-technical way the noncommutative causal structure of many toy models as almost commutative spacetimes and the Moyal-Weyl spacetime. We show that those models present some unexpected physical interpretations as a geometrical explanation of the Zitterbewegung trembling motion of a fermion as well as some geometrical constraints on translations and energy jumps of wave packets on the Moyal spacet…
These are the notes of a lecture given during the summer school "Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory", Villa de Leyva, Colombia, july 11 - 29, 2005. We review basic facts concerning gauge anomalies and discuss the link with the Connes-Moscovici index formula in noncommutative geometry.
This paper studies geometric structures on noncommutative hypersurfaces within a module-theoretic approach to noncommutative Riemannian (spin) geometry. A construction to induce differential, Riemannian and spinorial structures from a noncommutative embedding space to a noncommutative hypersurface is developed and applied to obtain noncommutative hypersurface Dirac operators. The general construction is illustrated by studying the sequence $\mathbb{T}^{2}_θ \hookrightarrow \mathbb{S}^{3}_θ \hookrightarrow \mathbb{R}^{4}_θ$ of noncommutative hypersurface embeddings.
We unveil the geometric nature of the multiplet of fundamental fermions in the Standard Model of fundamental particles as a noncommutative analogue of de Rham forms on the internal finite quantum space.
We study the extension of integrable equations which possess the Lax representations to noncommutative spaces. We construct various noncommutative Lax equations by the Lax-pair generating technique and the Sato theory. The Sato theory has revealed essential aspects of the integrability of commutative soliton equations and the noncommutative extension is worth studying. We succeed in deriving various noncommutative hierarchy equations in the framework of the Sato theory, which is brand-new. The existence of the hierarchy would suggest a hidden infinite-dimensional symmetry in the noncommutative…
