In this article we have discovered a close relationship between the (algebraic) Bethe Ansatz equations of the spin $s$ XXZ model of a finite size and the $q$-Sturm-Liouville problem. We have demonstrated that solutions of the Bethe Ansatz equations give rise to the polynomial solutions of a second order $q$-difference equation in terms of Askey-Wilson operator. The more general form of Bethe Ansatz equations and the mathematical problems relevant to the physics of XXZ model are discussed. Furthermore, the similar correspondence between Bethe Ansatz equations of XXX model and the Sturm-Liouville type difference equation in terms of Wilson operator has also been found.
We study solutions of the Bethe ansatz equation for the XXZ-type integrable model associated with the Lie algebra sl_N. We give a correspondence between solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations and collections of quasi-polynomials. This extends the results of E.Mukhin and A.Varchenko for the XXX-type model and the trigonometric Gaudin model.
It is shown that solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the inhomogeneous arbitrary spin XXX or XXZ model satisfy certain identites which generalize those, recently obtained by K.Fabricius and B.M.McCoy, for solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the six-vertex model. Even in the last case, the given proof is simpler than the original one.
We present the construction of the full set of eigenvectors of the open ASEP and XXZ models with special constraints on the boundaries. The method combines both recent constructions of coordinate Bethe Ansatz and the old method of matrix Ansatz specific to the ASEP. This "matrix coordinate Bethe Ansatz" can be viewed as a non-commutative coordinate Bethe Ansatz, the non-commutative part being related to the algebra appearing in
We consider the open spin-s XXZ quantum spin chain with N sites and general integrable boundary terms for generic values of the bulk anisotropy parameter, and for values of the boundary parameters which satisfy a certain constraint. We derive two sets of Bethe Ansatz equations, and find numerical evidence that together they give the complete set of $(2s+1)^{N}$ eigenvalues of the transfer matrix. For the case s=1, we explicitly determine the Hamiltonian, and find an expression for its eigenvalues in terms of Bethe roots.
We give a construction of creation operators responsible for appearance of Bethe vectors with the same eigenvalues of the transfer-matrix for the inhomogeneous arbitrary spin XXZ model at roots of unity with particular quasiperiodic boundary conditions. This construction generalizes the similar one, recently obtained by K.Fabricius and B.M.McCoy, for the homogeneous six-vertex model with periodic boundary conditions. Even in the last case, the given proof for the main formulae are simpler than the original one.
We solve the XXZ Gaudin model with generic boundary using the modified algebraic Bethe ansatz. The diagonal and triangular cases have been recovered in this general framework. We show that the model for odd or even lengths has two different behaviors. The corresponding Bethe equations are computed for all the cases. For the chain with even length, inhomogeneous Bethe equations are necessary. The higher spin Gaudin models with generic boundary is also treated.
Based on the inhomogeneous T-Q relation constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz, the Bethe-type eigenstates of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain with arbitrary boundary fields are constructed. It is found that by employing two sets of gauge transformations, proper generators and reference state for constructing Bethe vectors can be obtained respectively. Given an inhomogeneous T-Q relation for an eigenvalue, it is proven that the resulting Bethe state is an eigenstate of the transfer matrix, provided that the parameters of the generators satisfy the associated Bethe Ansatz equations.
The spectral problem of the Heisenberg XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain on the segment is investigated within a modified algebraic Bethe ansatz framework. We consider in this work the most general boundaries allowed by integrability. The eigenvalues and the eigenvectors are obtained. They are characterised by a set of Bethe roots with cardinality equal to $N$, the length of the chain, and which satisfies a set of Bethe equations with an additional term.
In this paper, we prove the off-shell equation satisfied by the transfer matrix associated with the XXZ spin-$\frac12$ chain on the segment with two generic integrable boundaries acting on the Bethe vector. The essential step is to prove that the expression of the action of a modified creation operator on the Bethe vector has an off-shell structure which results in an inhomogeneous term in the eigenvalues and Bethe equations of the corresponding transfer matrix.
We demonstrate for the six vertex and XXZ model parameterized by $Δ=-(q+q^{-1})/2\neq \pm 1$ that when q^{2N}=1 for integer $N\geq 2$ the Bethe's ansatz equations determine only the eigenvectors which are the highest weights of the infinite dimensional sl_2 loop algebra symmetry group of the model. Therefore in this case the Bethe's ansatz equations are incomplete and further conditions need to be imposed in order to completely specify the wave function. We discuss how the evaluation parameters of the finite dimensional representations of the sl_2 loop algebra can be used to complete this spec…
The modified algebraic Bethe ansatz, introduced by Crampé and the author [8], is used to characterize the spectral problem of the Heisenberg XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain on the segment with lower and upper triangular boundaries. The eigenvalues and the eigenvectors are conjectured. They are characterized by a set of Bethe roots with cardinality equal to $N$ the length of the chain and which satisfies a set of Bethe equations with an additional term. The conjecture follows from exact results for small chains. We also present a factorized formula for the Bethe vectors of the Heisenberg XXZ spin-…
We reconsider the open XXZ chain of Yang and Fendley. This model possesses a lattice supersymmetry which changes the length of the chain by one site. We perform an algebraic Bethe ansatz analysis of the model and derive the commutation relations of the lattice SUSY operators with the four elements of the open-chain monodromy matrix. Hence we give the action of the SUSY operator on off-shell and on-shell Bethe states. We show that this action generally takes one on-shell Bethe eigenstate to another. The exception is that a zero-energy vacuum state will be a SUSY singlet. The SUSY pairings of Be…
The implementation of the algebraic Bethe ansatz for the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain, of arbitrary spin-$s$, in the case, when both reflection matrices have the upper-triangular form is analyzed. The general form of the Bethe vectors is studied. In the particular form, Bethe vectors admit the recurrent procedure, with an appropriate modification, used previously in the case of the XXX Heisenberg chain. As expected, these Bethe vectors yield the strikingly simple expression for the off-shell action of the transfer matrix of the chain as well as the spectrum of the transfer matrix and the correspo…
We derive a determinant expression for overlaps of Bethe states of the XXZ spin chain with the N{é}el state, the ground state of the system in the antiferromagnetic Ising limit. Our formula, of determinant form, is valid for generic system size. Interestingly, it is remarkably similar to the well-known Gaudin formula for the norm of Bethe states, and to another recently-derived overlap formula appearing in the Lieb-Liniger model.
For generic values of q, all the eigenvectors of the transfer matrix of the U_q sl(2)-invariant open spin-1/2 XXZ chain with finite length N can be constructed using the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) formalism of Sklyanin. However, when q is a root of unity (q=exp(i pi/p) with integer p>1), the Bethe equations acquire continuous solutions, and the transfer matrix develops Jordan cells. Hence, there appear eigenvectors of two new types: eigenvectors corresponding to continuous solutions (exact complete p-strings), and generalized eigenvectors. We propose general ABA constructions for these two n…
We consider the sl(2)_q-invariant open spin-1/2 XXZ quantum spin chain of finite length N. For the case that q is a root of unity, we propose a formula for the number of admissible solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations in terms of dimensions of irreducible representations of the Temperley-Lieb algebra; and a formula for the degeneracies of the transfer matrix eigenvalues in terms of dimensions of tilting sl(2)_q-modules. These formulas include corrections that appear if two or more tilting modules are spectrum-degenerate. For the XX case (q=exp(i pi/2)), we give explicit formulas for the num…
We calculate the scalar product of Bethe states of the XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain with general integrable boundary conditions. The off-shell equations satisfied by the transfer matrix and the off-shell Bethe vectors allow one to derive a linear system for the scalar product of off-shell and on-shell Bethe states. We show that this linear system can be solved in terms of a compact determinant formula that involves the Jacobian of the transfer matrix eigenvalue and certain q-Pochhammer polynomials of the boundary couplings.
The second reference state of the open XXZ spin chain with non-diagonal boundary terms is studied. The associated Bethe states exactly yield the second set of eigenvalues proposed recently by functional Bethe Ansatz. In the quasi-classical limit, two sets of Bethe states give the complete eigenstates of the associated Gaudin model.

A number of conjectures have been given recently concerning the connection between the antiferromagnetic XXZ spin chain at $Δ= - \frac12$ and various symmetry classes of alternating sign matrices. Here we use the integrability of the XXZ chain to gain further insight into these developments. In doing so we obtain a number of new results using Baxter's $Q$ function for the XXZ chain for periodic, twisted and open boundary conditions. These include expressions for the elementary symmetric functions evaluated at the groundstate solution of the Bethe roots. In this approach Schur functions play a …
The structure of Bethe vectors for generalised models associated with the XXX- and XXZ-type R-matrix is investigated. The Bethe vectors in terms of two--component and multi--component models are described. Consequently, their structure in terms of local variables and operators is provided. This, as a consequence, proves the equivalence of coordinate and algebraic Bethe ansatzes for the Heisenberg XXX and XXZ spin chains.
We investigate special solutions to the Bethe Ansatz equations (BAE) for open integrable $XXZ$ Heisenberg spin chains containing phantom (infinite) Bethe roots. The phantom Bethe roots do not contribute to the energy of the Bethe state, so the energy is determined exclusively by the remaining regular excitations. We rederive the phantom Bethe roots criterion and focus on BAE solutions for mixtures of phantom roots and regular (finite) Bethe roots. We prove that in the presence of phantom Bethe roots, all eigenstates are split between two invariant subspaces, spanned by chiral shock states. Bet…
The XXZ Gaudin model with {\it generic} integerable boundaries specified by generic {\it non-diagonal} K-matrices is studied. The commuting families of Gaudin operators are diagonalized by the algebraic Bethe ansatz method. The eigenvalues and the corresponding Bethe ansatz equations are obtained.
We construct the coordinate Bethe ansatz for all eigenstates of the open spin-$\frac12$ XXZ chain that fulfill the phantom roots criterion (PRC). Under the PRC, the Hilbert space splits into two invariant subspaces and there are two sets of homogeneous Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) to characterize the subspaces in each case. We propose two sets of vectors with chiral shocks to span the invariant subspaces and expand the corresponding eigenstates. All the vectors are factorized and have symmetrical and simple structures. Using several simple cases as examples, we present the core elements of our…
We present a generalization of the coordinate Bethe ansatz that allows us to solve integrable open XXZ and ASEP models with non-diagonal boundary matrices, provided their parameters obey some relations. These relations extend the ones already known in the literature in the context of algebraic or functional Bethe ansatz. The eigenvectors are represented as sums over cosets of the $BC_n$ Weyl group.
I prove that the Bethe roots describing either the ground state or a certain class of "particle-hole" excited states of the XXZ spin-$1/2$ chain in any sector with magnetisation $\mathfrak{m} \in [0;1/2]$ exist and form, in the infinite volume limit, a dense distribution on a subinterval of $\mathbb{R}$. The results holds for any value of the anisotropy $Δ\geq -1 $. In fact, I establish an even stronger result, namely the existence of an all order asymptotic expansion of the counting function associated with such roots. As a corollary, these results allow one to prove the existence and form of…
Quantum integrable systems, such as the interacting Bose gas in one dimension and the XXZ quantum spin chain, have an extensive number of local conserved quantities that endow them with exotic thermalization and transport properties. We discuss recently introduced hydrodynamic approaches for such integrable systems from the viewpoint of kinetic theory and extend the previous works by proposing a numerical scheme to solve the hydrodynamic equations for finite times and arbitrary locally equilibrated initial conditions. We then discuss how such methods can be applied to describe non-equilibrium …
The scalar products, form factors and correlation functions of the XXZ spin chain with twisted (or antiperiodic) boundary condition are obtained based on the inhomogeneous $T-Q$ relation and the Bethe states constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz. It is shown that the scalar product of two off-shell Bethe states, the form factors and the two-point correlation functions can be expressed as the summation of certain determinants. The corresponding homogeneous limits are studied. The results are also checked by the numerical calculations.
We revisit the quantum/classical integrable model correspondence in the context of inhomogeneous finite length XXZ spin-1/2 chains with periodic boundary conditions and show that the Bethe scalar product of an arbitrary state and a Bethe eigenstate is a discrete KP tau-function. The continuous Miwa variables of discrete KP are the rapidities of the arbitrary state.
In this paper, we review a few known facts on the coordinate Bethe ansatz. We present a detailed construction of the Bethe ansatz vector $ψ$ and energy $Λ$, which satisfy $V ψ= Λψ$, where $V$ is the the transfer matrix of the six-vertex model on a finite square lattice with periodic boundary conditions for weights $a= b=1$ and $c > 0$. We also show that the same vector $ψ$ satisfies $H ψ= E ψ$, where $H$ is the Hamiltonian of the XXZ model (which is the model for which the Bethe ansatz was first developed), with a value $E$ computed explicitly. Variants of this approach have become central tec…
The integrable XXZ alternating spin chain with generic non-diagonal boundary terms specified by the most general non-diagonal K-matrices is studied via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz method. Based on the intrinsic properties of the fused R-matrices and K-matrices, we obtain certain closed operator identities and conditions, which allow us to construct an inhomogeneous T-Q relation and the associated Bethe Ansatz equations accounting for the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix.
We consider the open spin-s XXZ quantum spin chain with nondiagonal boundary terms. By exploiting certain functional relations at roots of unity, we derive a generalized form of T-Q relation involving more than one independent Q(u), which we use to propose the Bethe-ansatz-type expressions for the eigenvalues of the transfer matrix. At most two of the boundary parameters are set to be arbitrary and the bulk anisotropy parameter has values η= iπ/2, iπ/4,... We also provide numerical evidence for the completeness of the Bethe-ansatz-type solutions derived, using s = 1 case as an example.
The integrable close and open chain models can be formulated in terms of generators of the Hecke algebras. In this review paper, we describe in detail the Bethe ansatz for the XXX and the XXZ integrable close chain models. We find the Bethe vectors for two--component and inhomogeneous models. We also find the Bethe vectors for the fermionic realization of the integrable XXX and XXZ close chain models by means of the algebraic and coordinate Bethe ansatz. Special modification of the XXZ closed spin chain model ("small polaron model") is consedered. Finally, we discuss some questions relating to…
We construct the fusion operators in the generalized $τ^{(2)}$-model using the fused $L$-operators, and verify the fusion relations with the truncation identity. The algebraic Bethe ansatz discussion is conducted on two special classes of $τ^{(2)}$ which include the superintegrable chiral Potts model. We then perform the parallel discussion on the XXZ spin chain at roots of unity, and demonstrate that the $sl_2$-loop-algebra symmetry exists for the root-of-unity XXZ spin chain with a higher spin, where the evaluation parameters for the symmetry algebra are identified by the explicit Fabricius-…
In this paper we count the numbers of real and complex solutions to Bethe constraints in the two particle sector of the XXZ model. We find exact number of exceptions to the string conjecture and total number of solutions which is required for completeness.
The Bethe ansatz solutions for an open XXZ spin chain with arbitrary spin with N sites and nondiagonal boundary terms are revisited. The anisotropy parameter, for cases considered here, has values η= i πr/q, where r and q are positive integers with q restricted to odd integers. Numerical results are presented to support the solutions.
The Bethe equations for the periodic XXX and XXZ spin chains admit singular solutions, for which the corresponding eigenvalues and eigenvectors are ill-defined. We use a twist regularization to derive conditions for such singular solutions to be physical, in which case they correspond to genuine eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian.
For the scalar product $S_n$ of the XXZ $s=1/2$ spin chain we derive a new determinant expression which is symmetric in the Bethe roots. We consider an application of this formula to the inhomogeneous groundstate of the model with $Δ=-1/2$ with twisted periodic boundary conditions. At this point the ground state eigenvalue $τ_n$ of the transfer matrix is known and has a simple form that does not contain the Bethe roots. We use the knowledge of $τ_n(μ)$ to obtain a closed expression for the scalar product. The result is written in terms of Schur functions. The computations of the normalization …
We introduce a generalization of the original Coordinate Bethe Ansatz that allows to treat the case of open spin chains with non-diagonal boundary matrices. We illustrate it on two cases: the XXX and XXZ chains. Short review on a joint work with N. Crampe (L2C) and D. Simon (LPMA), see arXiv:1009.4119, arXiv:1105.4119 and arXiv:1106.3264.
In two previous papers [26, 27], the exact solutions of the spin-1/2 chains with arbitrary boundary fields were constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA). Here we introduce a method to approach the thermodynamic limit of those models. The key point is that at a sequence of degenerate points of the crossing parameter η=η_m, the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) can be reduced to the conventional ones. This allows us to extrapolate the formulae derived from the reduced BAEs to arbitrary ηcase with O(N^{-2}) corrections in the thermodynamic limit N\to\infty. As an example, the…
We investigate the thermodynamic limit of the one-dimensional ferromagnetic XXZ model with twisted (or antiperiodic ) boundary condition. It is shown that the distribution of the Bethe roots of the inhomogeneous Bethe Ansatz equations (BAEs) for the ground state as well as for the low-lying excited states satisfy the string hypothesis, although the inhomogeneous BAEs are not in the standard product form which has made the study of the corresponding thermodynamic limit nontrivial. We also obtain the twisted boundary energy induced by the non-trivial twisted boundary conditions in the thermodyna…
We derive a non-linear integral equation for the Bethe-ansatz solvable open XXZ spin chain of arbitrary length describing the lowest lying state with zero magnetization. For this case we show how to combine the integral representation with the known determinant formula of norms and scalar products.
We establish the method of Bethe ansatz for the XXZ type model obtained from the R-matrix associated to quantum toroidal gl(1). We do that by using shuffle realizations of the modules and by showing that the Hamiltonian of the model is obtained from a simple multiplication operator by taking an appropriate quotient. We expect this approach to be applicable to a wide variety of models.
At large values of the anisotropy Δ, the open-boundary Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain has eigenstates displaying localization at the edges. We present a Bethe ansatz description of this `edge-locking' phenomenon in the entire Δ>1 region. We focus on the simplest spin sectors, namely the highly polarized sectors with only one or two overturned spins, i.e., one-particle and two-particle sectors. Edge-locking is associated with pure imaginary solutions of the Bethe equations, which are not commonly encountered in periodic chains. In the one-particle case, at large anisotropies there are two eigenstate…
Recent work of Foda and his group on a connection between classical integrable hierarchies (the KP and 2D Toda hierarchies) and some quantum integrable systems (the 6-vertex model with DWBC, the finite XXZ chain of spin 1/2, the phase model on a finite chain, etc.) is reviewed. Some additional information on this issue is also presented.
We establish several properties of the solutions to the linear integral equations describing the infinite volume properties of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain in the disordered regime. In particular, we obtain lower and upper bounds for the dressed energy, dressed charge and density of Bethe roots. Furthermore, we establish that given a fixed external magnetic field (or a fixed magnetization) there exists a unique value of the boundary of the Fermi zone.
Based on the inhomogeneous T-Q relation constructed via the off-diagonal Bethe Ansatz, a systematic method for retrieving the Bethe-type eigenstates of integrable models without obvious reference state is developed by employing certain orthogonal basis of the Hilbert space. With the XXZ spin torus model and the open XXX spin-1/2 chain as examples, we show that for a given inhomogeneous T-Q relation and the associated Bethe Ansatz equations, the constructed Bethe-type eigenstate has a well-defined homogeneous limit.
In this work we study scalar products of Bethe vectors associated with the $XXZ$ spin chain with open boundary conditions. The scalar products are obtained as solutions of a system of functional equations. The description of scalar products through functional relations follows from a particular map having the reflection algebra as its domain and a function space as the codomain. Within this approach we find a multiple contour integral representation for the scalar products in which the homogeneous limit can be obtained trivially.
We discuss some of the difficulties that have been mentioned in the literature in connection with the Bethe ansatz for the six-vertex model and XXZ chain, and for the eight-vertex model. In particular we discuss the ``beyond the equator'', infinite momenta and exact complete string problems. We show how they can be overcome and conclude that the coordinate Bethe ansatz does indeed give a complete set of states, as expected.
In this paper we apply the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz to compute the eigenvalues and the Bethe equations of the transfer matrix of the new integrable Lindbladian found in [1]. We show that it can be written as an integrable spin chain consisting of two interacting XXZ spin chains. We numerically compute the Liouville gap and its dependence on the parameters in the system such as scaling with the system length and interaction strength.
These are lecture notes of an introduction to quantum integrability given at the Tenth Modave Summer School in Mathematical Physics, 2014, aimed at PhD candidates and junior researchers in theoretical physics. We introduce spin chains and discuss the coordinate Bethe ansatz (CBA) for a representative example: the Heisenberg XXZ model. The focus lies on the structure of the CBA and on its main results, deferring a detailed treatment of the CBA for the general $M$-particle sector of the XXZ model to an appendix. Subsequently the transfer-matrix method is discussed for the six-vertex model, uncov…
We consider the Heisenberg spin chain in the presence of integrable spin defects. Using the Bethe ansatz methodology, we extract the associated transmission amplitudes, that describe the interaction between the particle-like excitations displayed by the models and the spin impurity. In the attractive regime of the XXZ model, we also derive the breather's transmission amplitude. We compare our findings with earlier relevant results in the context of the sine-Gordon model.
We study representation theory of Drinfel'd twists, in terms of what we call F matrices, associated to finite dimensional irreducible modules of quantum affine algebras, and which factorize the corresponding (unitary) R matrices. We construct explicitly such factorizing F matrices for irreducible tensor products of the fundamental representations of the quantum affine algebra sl2 and its associated Yangian. We then apply these constructions to the XXX and XXZ quantum spins chains of finite length in the framework of the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz.
In a previous paper we demonstrated that Bethe's equations are not sufficient to specify the eigenvectors of the XXZ model at roots of unity for states where the Hamiltonian has degenerate eigenvalues. We here find the equations which will complete the specification of the eigenvectors in these degenerate cases and present evidence that the $sl_2$ loop algebra symmetry is sufficiently powerful to determine that the highest weight of each irreducible representation is given by Bethe's ansatz.
