Recent work of Foda and his group on a connection between classical integrable hierarchies (the KP and 2D Toda hierarchies) and some quantum integrable systems (the 6-vertex model with DWBC, the finite XXZ chain of spin 1/2, the phase model on a finite chain, etc.) is reviewed. Some additional information on this issue is also presented.
We introduce ultradiscrete tau functions associated with rigged configurations for A^{(1)}_n. They satisfy an ultradiscrete version of the Hirota bilinear equation and play a role analogous to a corner transfer matrix for the box-ball system. As an application, we establish a piecewise linear formula for the Kerov-Kirillov-Reshetikhin bijection in the combinatorial Bethe ansatz. They also lead to general N-soliton solutions of the box-ball system.
We study the linear problem associated with modified affine Toda field equation for the Langlands dual $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}^\vee$, where $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$ is an untwisted affine Lie algebra. The connection coefficients for the asymptotic solutions of the linear problem are found to correspond to the $Q$-functions for $\mathfrak{g}$-type quantum integrable models. The $ψ$-system for the solutions associated with the fundamental representations of $\mathfrak{g}$ leads to Bethe ansatz equations associated with the affine Lie algebra $\hat{\mathfrak{g}}$. We also study the $A^{(2)}_{2r}$ affine …
We establish a correspondence between classical $A_n^{(1)}$ affine Toda field theories and $A_n$ Bethe Ansatz systems. We show that the connection coefficients relating specific solutions of the associated classical linear problem satisfy functional relations of the type that appear in the context of the massive quantum integrable model.
The quantum torus algebra plays an important role in a special class of solutions of the Toda hierarchy. Typical examples are the solutions related to the melting crystal model of topological strings and 5D SUSY gauge theories. The quantum torus algebra is realized by a 2D complex free fermion system that underlies the Toda hierarchy, and exhibits mysterious "shift symmetries". This article is based on collaboration with Toshio Nakatsu.
We continue the study of the B-Toda hierarchy (the Toda lattice with the constraint of type B) which can be regarded as a discretization of the BKP hierarchy. We introduce the tau-function of the B-Toda hierarchy and obtain the bilinear equations for it. Examples of soliton tau-functions are presented in the explicit form.
The most general cyclic representations of the quantum integrable tau_2-model are analyzed. The complete characterization of the tau_2-spectrum (eigenvalues and eigenstates) is achieved in the framework of Sklyanin's Separation of Variables (SOV) method by extending and adapting the ideas first introduced in [1, 2]: i) The determination of the tau_2-spectrum is reduced to the classification of the solutions of a given functional equation in a class of polynomials. ii) The determination of the tau_2-eigenstates is reduced to the classification of the solutions of an associated Baxter equation. …
An infinite class of fermionic flows of the N=(1|1) superconformal Toda lattice hierarchy is constructed and their algebraic structure is studied. We completely solve the semi-infinite N=(1|1) Toda lattice and chain hierarchies and derive their tau functions, which may be relevant for building supersymmetric matrix models. Their bosonic limit is also discussed.
We present the q-deformed multivariate hypergeometric functions related to Schur polynomials as tau-functions of the KP and of the two-dimensional Toda lattice hierarchies. The variables of the hypergeometric functions are the higher times of those hierarchies. The discrete Toda lattice variable shifts parameters of hypergeometric functions. The role of additional symmetries in generating hypergeometric tau-functions is explained.
We extend a recent result of [13] for the KdV hierarchy to the Toda lattice hierarchy. Namely, for an arbitrary solution to the Toda lattice hierarchy, we define a pair of wave functions, and use them to give explicit formulae for the generating series of $k$-point correlation functions of the solution. Applications to computing GUE correlators and Gromov--Witten invariants of the Riemann sphere are under consideration.
The simplest nontrivial tau functions of the Toda lattice and the $\tN$-component Toda lattice are compared in their applications to multimatrix integrals.
In this paper, we construct the Sato theory including the Hirota bilinear equations and tau function of a new $q$-deformed Toda hierarchy(QTH). Meanwhile the Block type additional symmetry and bi-Hamiltonian structure of this hierarchy are given. From Hamiltonian tau symmetry, we give another definition of tau function of this hierarchy. Afterwards, we extend the $q$-Toda hierarchy to an extended $q$-Toda hierarchy(EQTH) which satisfy a generalized Hirota quadratic equation in terms of generalized vertex operators. The Hirota quadratic equation might have further application in Gromov-Witten t…
We introduce a new integrable hierarchy of nonlinear differential-difference equations which we call constrained Toda hierarchy (C-Toda). It can be regarded as a certain subhierarchy of the 2D Toda lattice obtained by imposing the constraint $\bar {\cal L}={\cal L}^†$ on the two Lax operators (in the symmetric gauge). We prove the existence of the tau-function of the C-Toda hierarchy and show that it is the square root of the 2D Toda lattice tau-function. In this and some other respects the C-Toda is a Toda analogue of the CKP hierarchy. It is also shown that zeros of the tau-function of ellip…
The extended flow equations of the multi-component Toda hierarchy are constructed. We give the Hirota bilinear equations and tau function of this new extended multi-component Toda hierarchy(EMTH). Because of logarithmic terms, some extended vertex operators are constructed in generalized Hirota bilinear equations which might be useful in topological field theory and Gromov-Witten theory. Meanwhile the Darboux transformation and bi-Hamiltonian structure of this hierarchy are given. From the Hamiltonian tau symmetry, we give another different tau function of this hierarchy with some unknown myst…
In this paper we generalize the Sato theory to the extended bigraded Toda hierarchy (EBTH). We revise the definition of the Lax equations, give the Sato equations, wave operators, Hirota bilinear identities (HBI) and show the existence of $tau$ function $τ(t)$. Meanwhile we prove the validity of its Fay-like identities and Hirota bilinear equations (HBEs) in terms of vertex operators whose coefficients take values in the algebra of differential operators. In contrast with HBEs of the usual integrable system, the current HBEs are equations of product of operators involving $e^{\partial_x}$ and $…
The extended flow equations of a new $Z_N$-Toda hierarchy which takes values in a commutative subalgebra $Z_N$ of $gl(N,\mathbb C)$ is constructed. Meanwhile we give the Hirota bilinear equations and tau function of this new extended $Z_N$-Toda hierarchy(EZTH). Because of logarithm terms, some extended Vertex operators are constructed in generalized Hirota bilinear equations which might be useful in topological field theory and Gromov-Witten theory. Meanwhile the Darboux transformation and bi-hamiltonian structure of this hierarchy are given. From hamiltonian tau symmetry, we give another diff…
The relativistic quantum Toda chain model is studied with the generalized algebraic Bethe Ansatz method. By employing a set of local gauge transformations, proper local vacuum states can be obtained for this model. The exact spectrum and eigenstates of the model are thus constructed simultaneously.
We describe projective structures on a Riemann surface corresponding to monodromy groups which have trivial $SL(2)$ monodromies around singularities and trivial $PSL(2)$ monodromies along homologically non-trivial loops on a Riemann surface. We propose a natural higher genus analog of Stieltjes-Bethe equations. Links with branched projective structures and with Hurwitz spaces with ramifications of even order are established. We find a higher genus analog of the genus zero Yang-Yang function (the function generating accessory parameters) and describe its similarity and difference with Bergman t…
This paper focuses on different reductions of 2-dimensional (2d-)Toda hierarchy. Symmetric and skew symmetric moment matrices are firstly considered, resulting in the differential relations between symmetric/skew symmetric tau functions and 2d-Toda's tau functions, respectively. Furthermore, motivated by the Cauchy two-matrix model and Bures ensemble from random matrix theory, we study the rank one shift condition in symmetric case and rank two shift condition in skew symmetric case, from which the C-Toda hierarchy and B-Toda hierarchy are found respectively, together with their special Lax ma…
We construct a basis of solutions of the scalar $\boldsymbol{ \texttt{t} }- \boldsymbol{ \texttt{Q} }$ equation describing the spectrum of the $q$-Toda and Toda$_2$ chains by using auxiliary non-linear integral equations. Our construction allows us to provide quantisation conditions for the spectra of these models in the form of thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz-like equations.
We study the relation between the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation with discrete Laplacian and the two dimensional Toda hierarchy. We introduce the tau-functions tau_pm(z) for the periodic Benjamin-Ono equation, construct two families of integrals of motion {M_1,M_2,cdots}, {overline{M}_1,overline{M}_2,cdots}, and calculate some examples of the bilinear equations using the Hamiltonian structure. We confirmed that some of the low lying bilinear equations agree with the ones obtained from a certain reduction of the 2D Toda hierarchy.
Thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are coupled non-linear integral equations which appear frequently when solving integrable models. Those associated with models with N=2 supersymmetry can be related to differential equations, among them Painleve III and the Toda hierarchy. In the simplest such case the massless limit of these non-linear integral equations can be solved in terms of the Airy function. This is the only known closed-form solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, outside of free or classical models. This turns out to give the spectral determinant of the Schrodinger equat…
In this paper, we construct a new integrable equation which is a generalization of $q$-Toda equation. Meanwhile its soliton solutions are constructed to show its integrable property. Further the Lax pairs of the generalized $q$-Toda equation and a whole integrable generalized $q$-Toda hierarchy are also constructed. To show the integrability, the Bi-hamiltonian structure and tau symmetry of the generalized $q$-Toda hierarchy are given and this leads to the tau function.
We prove that the extended Toda hierarchy of \cite{CDZ} admits nonabelian Lie algebra of infinitesimal symmetries isomorphic to the half of the Virasoro algebra. The generators $L_m$, $m\geq -1$ of the Lie algebra act by linear differential operators onto the tau function of the hierarchy. We also prove that the tau function of a generic solution to the extended Toda hierarchy is annihilated by a combination of the Virasoro operators and the flows of the hierarchy. As an application we show that the validity of the Virasoro constraints for the $CP^1$ Gromov-Witten invariants and their descende…
The subject of this paper is a connection between d-orthogonal polynomials and the Toda lattice hierarchy. In more details we consider some polynomial systems similar to Hermite polynomials, but satisfying $d+2$-term recurrence relation, $d >1$. Any such polynomial system defines a solution of the Toda lattice hierarchy. However we impose also the condition that the polynomials are also eigenfunctions of a differential operator, i.e. a bispectral problem. This leads to a solution of the Toda lattice hierarchy, enjoying a number of special properties. In particular the corresponding tau-functio…
The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the $τ$-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ …
The quasiclassical solution to the extended Toda chain hierarchy, corresponding to the deformation of the simplest Seiberg-Witten theory by all descendants of the dual topological string model, is constructed explicitly in terms of the complex curve and generating differential. The first derivatives of prepotential or quasiclassical tau-function over the extra times, extending the Toda chain, are expressed through the multiple integrals of the Seiberg-Witten one-form. We derive the corresponding quasiclassical Virasoro constraints, discuss the functional formulation of the problem and propose …
We give a direct derivation of a proposal of Nekrasov-Shatashvili concerning the quantization conditions of the Toda chain. The quantization conditions are formulated in terms of solutions to a nonlinear integral equation similar to the ones coming from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. This is equivalent to extremizing a certain function called Yang's potential. It is shown that the Nekrasov-Shatashvili formulation of the quantization conditions follows from the solution theory of the Baxter equation, suggesting that this way of formulating the quantization conditions should indeed be applicabl…
The box-ball system is an integrable cellular automaton on one dimensional lattice. It arises from either quantum or classical integrable systems by the procedures called crystallization and ultradiscretization, respectively. The double origin of the integrability has endowed the box-ball system with a variety of aspects related to Yang-Baxter integrable models in statistical mechanics, crystal base theory in quantum groups, combinatorial Bethe ansatz, geometric crystals, classical theory of solitons, tau functions, inverse scattering method, action-angle variables and invariant tori in comple…
Adler, Shiota and van Moerbeke observed that a tau function of the Pfaff lattice is a square root of a tau function of the Toda lattice hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki. In this paper we give a representation theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. We consider 2-BKP and two-component 2-KP tau functions. We shall show that a square of a BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component KP tau function and a square of a 2-BKP tau function is equal to a certain two-component 2-KP tau function.
We show that the scalar product of the phase model is a (restricted) 2-Toda tau-function. Additionally, we highlight a correspondence between the boundary correlation functions of the model and the wave-functions of the hierarchy.
We extend the matrix-resolvent method of computing logarithmic derivatives of tau-functions to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) hierarchy. Based on this method we give a detailed proof of a theorem of Carlet, Dubrovin and Zhang regarding the relationship between the Toda lattice hierarchy and the NLS hierarchy. As an application, we give an improvement of an algorithm of computing correlators in hermitian matrix models.
A $q$-analogue of the tau function of the modified KP hierarchy is defined by a change of independent variables. This tau function satisfies a system of bilinear $q$-difference equations. These bilinear equations are translated to the language of wave functions, which turn out to satisfy a system of linear $q$-difference equations. These linear $q$-difference equations are used to formulate the Lax formalism and the description of quasi-classical limit. These results can be generalized to a $q$-analogue of the Toda hierarchy. The results on the $q$-analogue of the Toda hierarchy might have an …
We construct a certain reduction of the 2D Toda hierarchy and obtain a tau-symmetric Hamiltonian integrable hierarchy. This reduced integrable hierarchy controls the linear Hodge integrals in the way that one part of its flows yields the intermediate long wave hierarchy, and the remaining flows coincide with a certain limit of the flows of the fractional Volterra hierarchy which controls the special cubic Hodge integrals.
In this paper, one new integrable modified extended Toda hierarchy(METH) is constructed with the help of two logarithmic Lax operators. With this modification, the interpolated spatial flow is added to make all flows complete. To show more integrable properties of the METH, the bi-Hamiltonian structure and tau symmetry of the METH will be given. The additional symmetry flows of this new hierarchy are presented. These flows form an infinite dimensional Lie algebra of Block type.
We consider ramified coverings of P^1 with arbitrary ramification type over 0 and infinity and simple ramifications elsewhere and prove that the generating function for the numbers of such coverings is a tau-function for the Toda lattice hierarchy of Ueno and Takasaki.
We show in full generality that time-correlation function of a physical observable analytically continued to imaginary time is a tau-function of integrable Toda hierarchy. Using this relation we show that the singularity along the imaginary axis, which is a generic behavior for quantum non-integrable many-body system, is due to delocalization in Krylov space.
Okounkov's generating function of the double Hurwitz numbers of the Riemann sphere is a hypergeometric tau function of the 2D Toda hierarchy in the sense of Orlov and Scherbin. This tau function turns into a tau function of the lattice KP hierarchy by specializing one of the two sets of time variables to constants. When these constants are particular values, the specialized tau functions become solutions of various reductions of the lattice KP hierarchy, such as the lattice Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy, the Bogoyavlensky-Itoh-Narita lattice and the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy. These reductions contai…
We define a dispersionless tau-symmetric bihamiltonian integrable hierarchy on the space of pairs of functions analytic inside/outside the unit circle with simple poles at $0$/$\infty$ respectively, which extends the dispersionless 2D Toda hierarchy of Takasaki and Takebe. Then we construct the deformed flat connection of the infinite-dimen\-sional Frobenius manifold $M_0$ introduced by Carlet, Dubrovin and Mertens in Math. Ann. 349 (2011) 75--115 and, by explicitly solving the deformed flatness equations, we prove that the extended 2D Toda hierarchy coincides with principal hierarchy of $M_0$…
The prepotential of the effective N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory perturbed in the ultraviolet by the descendents of the single-trace chiral operators is shown to be a particular tau-function of the quasiclassical Toda hierarchy. In the case of noncommutative U(1) theory (or U(N) theory with 2N-2 fundamental hypermultiplets at the appropriate locus of the moduli space of vacua) or a theory on a single fractional D3 brane at the ADE singularity the hierarchy is the dispersionless Toda chain. We present its explicit solutions. Our results generalize the limit shape analysis of Logan-Schepp and Versh…
In the present paper, we are concerned with the tau function and its connection with the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) theory for the massive Thirring (MT) model. First, we bilinearize the massive Thirring model under both the vanishing and nonvanishing boundary conditions. Starting from a set of bilinear equations of two-component KP-Toda hierarchy, we derive the multi-bright solution to the MT model by the KP hierarchy reductions. Then, we show that the discrete KP equation can generate a set of bilinear equations of a deformed KP-Toda hierarchy through Miwa transformation. By imposing constra…
The squared eigenfunction symmetry for the Toda lattice hierarchy is explicitly constructed in the form of the Kronecker product of the vector eigenfunction and the vector adjoint eigenfunction, which can be viewed as the generating function for the additional symmetries when the eigenfunction and the adjoint eigenfunction are the wave function and the adjoint wave function respectively. Then after the Fay-like identities and some important relations about the wave functions are investigated, the action of the squared eigenfunction related to the additional symmetry on the tau function is deri…
We obtain the exact generalised hydrodynamics for the integrable Toda system. The Toda system can be seen in a dual way, both as a gas and as a chain. In the gas point of view, using the elastic and factorised scattering of Toda particles, we obtain the generalised free energy and exact average currents, and write down the Euler hydrodynamic equations. This is written both as a continuity equation for the density of asymptotic momenta, and in terms of normal modes. This is based on the classical thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA), with a single quasiparticle type of Boltzmann statistics. By expl…
There is now a renewed interest to the Hurwitz tau-function, counting the isomorphism classes of Belyi pairs, arising in the study of equilateral triangulations and Grothiendicks's dessins d'enfant. It is distinguished by belonging to a particular family of Hurwitz tau-functions, possessing conventional Toda/KP integrability properties. We explain how the variety of recent observations about this function fits into the general theory of matrix model tau-functions. All such quantities possess a number of different descriptions, related in a standard way: these include Toda/KP integrability, sev…
The partition function for a canonical ensemble of 2D Coulomb charges in a background potential (the Dyson gas) is realized as a vacuum expectation value of a group-like element constructed in terms of free fermionic operators. This representation provides an explicit identification of the partition function with a tau-function of the 2D Toda lattice hierarchy. Its dispersionless (quasiclassical) limit yields the tau-function for analytic curves encoding the integrable structure of the inverse potential problem and parametric conformal maps. A similar fermionic realization of partition functio…
We revisit the quantum/classical integrable model correspondence in the context of inhomogeneous finite length XXZ spin-1/2 chains with periodic boundary conditions and show that the Bethe scalar product of an arbitrary state and a Bethe eigenstate is a discrete KP tau-function. The continuous Miwa variables of discrete KP are the rapidities of the arbitrary state.
Our previous work on a hidden integrable structure of the melting crystal model (the U(1) Nekrasov function) is extended to a modified crystal model. As in the previous case, "shift symmetries" of a quantum torus algebra plays a central role. With the aid of these algebraic relations, the partition function of the modified model is shown to be a tau function of the 2D Toda hierarchy. We conjecture that this tau function belongs to a class of solutions (the so called Toeplitz reduction) related to the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy.
In this paper, we firstly construct a weakly coupled Toda lattices with indefinite metrics which consist of $2N$ different coupled Hamiltonian systems. Afterwards, we consider the iso-spectral manifolds of extended tridiagonal Hessenberg matrix with indefinite metrics what is an extension of a strict tridiagonal matrix with indefinite metrics. For the initial value problem of the extended symmetric Toda hierarchy with indefinite metrics, we introduce the inverse scattering procedure in terms of eigenvalues by using the Kodama's method. In this article, according to the orthogonalization proced…
