We carry out the spectral analysis of matrix valued perturbations of 3-dimensional Dirac operators with variable magnetic field of constant direction. Under suitable assumptions on the magnetic field and on the pertubations, we obtain a limiting absorption principle, we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum in certain intervals and state properties of the point spectrum. Various situations, for example when the magnetic field is constant, periodic or diverging at infinity, are covered. The importance of an internal-type operator (a 2-dimensional Dirac operator) is also revealed in our study. The proofs rely on commutator methods.
We carry out the spectral analysis of singular matrix valued perturbations of 3-dimensional Dirac operators with variable magnetic field of constant direction. Under suitable assumptions on the magnetic field and on the perturbations, we obtain a limiting absorption principle, we prove the absence of singular continuous spectrum in certain intervals and state properties of the point spectrum. Constant, periodic as well as diverging magnetic fields are covered, and Coulomb potentials up to the physical nuclear charge Z<137 are allowed. In this paper, we prove a Kastler-Kalau-Walze type theorem for perturbations of Dirac operators on compact manifolds with or without boundary. As a corollary, we give two kinds of operator-theoretic explanations of the gravitational action on boundary. We also compute the spectral action for Dirac operators with two-form perturbations on $4$-dimensional compact manifolds.
We prove that the class of resonances of Dirac operators on the half-line with compactly supported potentials is closed with respect to $\ell^1$ perturbations. We also prove that the potential depends continuously on such perturbations. We show that similar results hold true for the Jost functions and Hermite-Biehler functions associated with Dirac operators.
We prove that canonical Dirac expression with linear potential generates operators on axis and half axis, for which we can find the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in explicit form. We construct the perturbations of these operators with in advance given spectra.
Using the method of Witten deformation, we express the basic index of a transversal Dirac operator over a Riemannian foliation as the sum of integers associated to the critical leaf closures of a given foliated bundle map.
We estimate the behavior of the generalized eigenfunctions of critical Dirac operators (which are Dirac operators with eigenfunctions and/or resonances for $E=m$) plus small perturbations in the potential. The results also apply for other differential operators (for example Schrödinger operators).
In this paper we study random perturbations of first order elliptic operators with periodic potentials. We are mostly interested in Hamiltonians modeling graphene antidot lattices with impurities. The unperturbed operator $H_0 := D_S + V_0$ is the sum of a Dirac-like operator $D_S$ plus a periodic matrix valued potential $V_0$, and is assumed to have an open gap. The random potential $V_ω$ is of Anderson-type with independent, identically distributed coupling constants and moving centers, with absolutely continuous probability distributions. We prove band edge localization, namely that there e…
We give a proof of the exact asymptotic behaviour in Anderson's Orthogonality Catastrophe for Dirac-$δ$ perturbations. We prove the exact asymptotics of the scalar product of the ground states of two non-interacting Fermi gases confined to a $3$-dimensional ball $B_L$ of radius $L$ in the thermodynamic limit, where the underlying one-particle operators differ by a Dirac-$δ$ perturbation. More precisely, we show the algebraic decay of the correlation determinant $\big|\det\big(\langleφ_j^L, ψ_k^L\rangle\big)_{j,k=1,...,N}\big|^2= L^{-ζ(E)+ \text{o}(1)}$, as $N,L\to\infty$ and $N/|B_L|\to~ ρ>0$,…
We investigate the leading terms of the spectral action for odd-dimensional Riemannian spin manifolds with the Dirac operator perturbed by a scalar function. We calculate first two Gilkey-de Witt coefficients and make explicit calculations for the case of $n$-spheres with a completely symmetric Dirac. In the special case of dimension 3, when such perturbation corresponds to the completely antisymmetric torsion we carry out the noncommutative calculation following Chamseddine and Connes and study the case of $SU_q(2)$.
We establish a limiting absorption principle for some long range perturbations of the Dirac systems at threshold energies. We cover multi-center interactions with small coupling constants. The analysis is reduced to study a family of non-self-adjoint operators. The technique is based on a positive commutator theory for non self-adjoint operators, which we develop in appendix. We also discuss some applications to the dispersive Helmholzt model in the quantum regime.
We prove that for a Dirac operator with no resonance at thresholds nor eigenvalue at thresholds the propagator satisfies propagation and dispersive estimates. When this linear operator has only two simple eigenvalues close enough, we study an associated class of nonlinear Dirac equations which have stationary solutions. As an application of our decay estimates, we show that these solutions have stable directions which are tangent to the subspaces associated with the continuous spectrum of the Dirac operator. This result is the analogue, in the Dirac case, of a theorem by Tsai and Yau about the…
The causal perturbation expansion defines the Dirac sea in the presence of a time-dependent external field. It yields an operator whose image generalizes the vacuum solutions of negative energy and thus gives a canonical splitting of the solution space into two subspaces. After giving a self-contained introduction to the ideas and techniques, we show that this operator is in general not idempotent. We modify the standard construction by a rescaling procedure giving a projector on the generalized negative-energy subspace. The resulting rescaled causal perturbation expansion uniquely defines the…
We determine explicitly a boundary triple for the Dirac operator $H:=-iα\cdot \nabla + mβ+ \mathbb V(x)$ in $\mathbb R^3$, for $m\in\mathbb R$ and $\mathbb V(x)= |x|^{-1} ( ν\mathbb{I}_4 +μβ-i λα\cdot{x}/|x|\,β)$, with $ν,μ,λ\in \mathbb R$. Consequently we determine all the self-adjoint realizations of $H$ in terms of the behaviour of the functions of their domain in the origin. When $\sup_{x} |x||\mathbb V(x)| \leq 1$, we discuss the problem of selecting the distinguished extension requiring that its domain is included in the domain of the appropriate quadratic form.
A recent proposal suggests that even if a Ginsparg-Wilson lattice Dirac operator does not possess any topological zero modes in topologically-nontrivial gauge backgrounds, it can reproduce correct axial anomaly for sufficiently smooth gauge configurations, provided that it is exponentially-local, doublers-free, and has correct continuum behavior. In this paper, we calculate the axial anomaly of this lattice Dirac operator in weak coupling perturbation theory, and show that it recovers the topological charge density in the continuum limit.
The electromagnetic scattering of a spin-0 charged particle off a fixed center is calculated in first-order quantum perturbation theory. This implies evaluating the square of a `Dirac delta-function,' an operation that is not defined in Schwartz distribution theory, and which in elementary text-books is dealt with according to `Fermi's golden rule.' In this paper these conventional calculations are carefully reviewed, and their crucial parts reformulated in a Colombeau algebra -- in which the product of distributions is mathematically well defined. The conclusions are: (1) The Dirac delta-func…
We consider the effect of discretization errors on the microscopic spectrum of the Wilson Dirac operator using both chiral Perturbation Theory and chiral Random Matrix Theory. A graded chiral Lagrangian is used to evaluate the microscopic spectral density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator as well as the distribution of the chirality over the real eigenvalues of the Wilson Dirac operator. It is shown that a chiral Random Matrix Theory for the Wilson Dirac operator reproduces the leading zero-momentum terms of Wilson chiral Perturbation Theory. All results are obtained for fixed index of th…

The perturbation of the Dirac sea to first order in the external potential is calculated in an expansion around the light cone. It is shown that the perturbation consists of a causal contribution, which describes the singular behavior of the Dirac sea on the light cone and contains bounded line integrals over the potential and its partial derivatives, and a non-causal contribution, which is a smooth function. As a preparatory step, we construct a formal solution of the inhomogeneous Klein-Gordon equation in terms of an infinite series of line integrals. More generally, the method presented can…
We study the lattice artefacts of the Wilson Dirac operator for QCD with two colors and fermions in the fundamental representation from the viewpoint of chiral perturbation theory. These effects are studied with the help of the following spectral observables: the level density of the Hermitian Wilson Dirac operator, the distribution of chirality over the real eigenvalues, and the chiral condensate for the quenched as well as for the unquenched theory. We provide analytical expressions for all these quantities. Moreover we derive constraints for the level density of the real eigenvalues of the …
We calculate the leading contribution to the spectral density of the Wilson Dirac operator using chiral perturbation theory where volume and lattice spacing corrections are given by universal scaling functions. We find analytical expressions for the spectral density on the scale of the average level spacing, and introduce a chiral Random Matrix Theory that reproduces these results. Our work opens up a novel approach to the infinite volume limit of lattice gauge theory at finite lattice spacing and new ways to extract coefficients of Wilson chiral perturbation theory.
We study the (massless) Dirac operator on a 3-sphere equipped with Riemannian metric. For the standard metric the spectrum is known. In particular, the eigenvalues closest to zero are the two double eigenvalues +3/2 and -3/2. Our aim is to analyse the behaviour of eigenvalues when the metric is perturbed in an arbitrary smooth fashion from the standard one. We derive explicit perturbation formulae for the two eigenvalues closest to zero, taking account of the second variations. Note that these eigenvalues remain double eigenvalues under perturbations of the metric: they cannot split because of…
In this paper, under some integrability condition, we prove that an electrical perturbation of the discrete Dirac operator has purely absolutely continuous spectrum for the one dimensional case. We reduce the problem to a non-self-adjoint Laplacian-like operator by using a spin up/down decomposition and rely on a transfermatrices technique.
Let $$L_0=\suml_{j=1}^nM_j^0D_j+M_0^0,\,\,\,\,D_j=\frac{1}{i}\frac{\pa}{\paxj}, \quad x\in\Rn,$$ be a constant coefficient first-order partial differential system, where the matrices $M_j^0$ are Hermitian. It is assumed that the homogeneous part is strongly propagative. In the nonhomegeneous case it is assumed that the operator is isotropic . The spectral theory of such systems and their potential perturbations is expounded, and a Limiting Absorption Principle is obtained up to thresholds. Special attention is given to a detailed study of the Dirac and Maxwell operators. The estimates of the s…
For a Dirac particle in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) potential, it is shown that the spin interaction (SI) operator which governs the transitions in the spin sector of the first order S-matrix is related to one of the generators of rotation in the spin space of the particle. This operator, which is given by the projection of the spin operator $\mathbfΣ$ along the direction of the total momentum of the system, and the two operators constructed from the projections of the $\mathbfΣ$ operator along the momentum transfer and the z-directions close the SU(2) algebra. It is suggested, then, that these two d…
We study the asymptotic behavior, as Planck's constant $\hbar\to 0$, of the number of discrete eigenvalues and the Riesz means of Pauli and Dirac operators with a magnetic field $μ\mathbf{B}(x)$ and an electric field. The magnetic field strength $μ$ is allowed to tend to infinity as $\hbar\to 0$. Two main types of results are established: in the first $μ\hbar\le constant$ as $\hbar\to 0$, with magnetic fields of arbitrary direction; the second results are uniform with respect to $μ\ge 0$ but the magnetic fields have constant direction. The results on the Pauli operator complement recent work o…
We get optimal lower bounds for the eigenvalues of the submanifold Dirac operator on locally reducible Riemannian manifolds in terms of intrinsic and extrinsic expressions. The limiting-cases are also studied. As a corollary, one gets several known results in this direction.
Considering different self-adjoint realisations of positively projected massless Coulomb-Dirac operators we find out, under which conditions any negative perturbation, however small, leads to emergence of negative spectrum. We also prove some weighted Lieb-Thirring estimates for negative eigenvalues of such operators. In the process we find explicit spectral representations for all self-adjoint realisations of massless Coulomb-Dirac operators on the half-line.
