In this article, I provide significant mathematical evidence in support of the existence of short-time approximations of any polynomial order for the computation of density matrices of physical systems described by arbitrarily smooth and bounded from below potentials. While for Theorem 2, which is ``experimental'', I only provide a ``physicist's'' proof, I believe the present development is mathematically sound. As a verification, I explicitly construct two short-time approximations to the density matrix having convergence orders 3 and 4, respectively. Furthermore, in the Appendix, I derive the convergence constant for the trapezoidal Trotter path integral technique. The convergence orders and constants are then verified by numerical simulations. While the two short-time approximations constructed are of sure interest to physicists and chemists involved in Monte Carlo path integral simulations, the present article is also aimed at the mathematical community, who might find the results interesting and worth exploring. I conclude the paper by discussing the implications of the present findings with respect to the solvability of the dynamical sign problem appearing in real-time Feynman path integral simulations.
A conjectural relationship between the GUE partition function with even couplings and certain special cubic Hodge integrals over the moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves is under consideration.
An interpretation of Krawtchouk matrices in terms of discrete version of the Feynman path integral is given. Also, an algebraic characterization in terms of the algebra of split quaternions is provided. The resulting properties include an easy inference of the spectral decomposition. It is also an occasion for an expository clarification of the role of Krawtchouk matrices in different areas, including quantum information.

A systematic framework is presented for the construction of hierarchies of soliton equations. This is realised by considering scalar linear integral equations and their representations in terms of infinite matrices, which give rise to all (2+1)- and (1+1)-dimensional soliton hierarchies associated with scalar differential spectral problems. The integrability characteristics for the obtained soliton hierarchies, including Miura-type transforms, $τ$-functions, Lax pairs as well as soliton solutions, are also derived within this framework.
A total set of $n$ states $|i\rangle$ and the corresponding projectors $Π(i)=|i\rangle \langle i|$ are considered, in a quantum system with $d$-dimensional Hilbert space $H(d)$. A partially known density matrix $ρ$ with given $p(i)={\rm Tr}[ρΠ(i)]$ (where $i=1,...,n$ and $d\le n\le d^2-1$) is considered, and its ranking permutation is defined. It is used to calculate the Choquet integral ${\cal C}(ρ)$ which is a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix. Comonotonicity is an important concept in the formalism, which is used to formalise the vague concept of physically similar density matrices. I…

We consider the KZ differential equations over $\mathbb C$ in the case, when the hypergeometric solutions are one-dimensional integrals. We also consider the same differential equations over a finite field $\mathbb F_p$. We study the space of polynomial solutions of these differential equations over $\mathbb F_p$, constructed in a previous work by V. Schechtman and the second author. Using Hasse-Witt matrices we identify the space of these polynomial solutions over $\mathbb F_p$ with the space dual to a certain subspace of regular differentials on an associated curve. We also relate these poly…

We explain how Gaussian integrals over ensemble of complex matrices with source matrices generate Hurwitz numbers of the most general type, namely, Hurwitz numbers with arbitrary orientable or non-orientable base surface and arbitrary profiles at branch points. We use the Feynman diagram approach. The connections with topological theories and also with certain classical and quantum integrable theories in particular with Witten's description of two-dimensional gauge theory are shown.
The hypergeometric solutions of the KZ equations were constructed almost 30 years ago. The polynomial solutions of the KZ equations over the finite field $F_p$ with a prime number $p$ of elements were constructed recently. In this paper we consider the example of the KZ equations whose hypergeometric solutions are given by hyperelliptic integrals of genus $g$. It is known that in this case the total $2g$-dimensional space of holomorphic solutions is given by the hyperelliptic integrals. We show that the recent construction of the polynomial solutions over the field $F_p$ in this case gives onl…
We study multi-matrix models which may be viewed as integrals of products of tau functions which depend on the eigenvalues of products of random matrices. In the present paper we consider tau functions of the hierarchy the two-component KP (semiinfinite relativistic Toda lattice) and of hierarchy of the BKP introduced by Kac and van de Leur. Sometimes such integrals are tau functions themselves. We consider models which generate Hurwitz numbers $H^{e},f$, where $e$ is the Euler characteristic of the base surface and $f$ is the number of branch points. We show that in case the integrands contai…
The goal of this "Habilitation à diriger des recherches" is to present two different applications, namely computations of certain partition functions in probability and applications to integrable systems, of the topological recursion developed by B. Eynard and N. Orantin in 2007. Since its creation, the range of applications of the topological recursion has been growing and many results in different fields have been obtained. The first aspect that I will develop deals with the historical domain of the topological recursion: random matrix integrals. I will review the formalism of the topologica…
We shall consider the product of complex random matrices from the independent complex Ginibre ensembles. The product includes complex matrices $Z_i, Z_i^\dagger, \, i = 1, \ldots, n$ and $2n$ sources (complex matrices $C_i$ and $C_i^*$). Any such product can be represented by a chord diagram that encodes the order of the matrices in the product. We introduce the Euler characteristic E$^*$ of the chord diagram and show that the spectral correlation functions of the product generate Hurwitz numbers that enumerate nonequivalent branched coverings of Riemann surfaces of genus $g^*$. The role of so…
In this paper, we highlight the role played by orthogonal and symplectic Harish-Chandra integrals in the study of real-valued matrix product ensembles. By making use of these integrals and the matrix-valued Fourier-Laplace transform, we find the explicit eigenvalue distributions for particular Hermitian anti-symmetric matrices and particular Hermitian anti-self dual matrices, involving both sums and products. As a consequence of these results, the eigenvalue probability density function of the random product structure $X_M \cdots X_1( iA) X_1^T \cdots X_M^T$, where each $X_i$ is a standard rea…
Let $X$ be a smooth complete intersection over $\mathbb{C}$ of dimension $n-k$ in the projective space $\mathbf{P}^n_{\mathbb{C}}$, for given positive integers $n$ and $k$. For a given integral homology cycle $[γ] \in H_{n-k}(X(\mathbb{C}),\mathbb{Z})$, the period integral is defined to be a linear map from the de Rham cohomology group to $\mathbb{C}$ given by $[ω] \mapsto \int_γω$. The goal of this article is to interpret this period integral as a linear map from the polynomial ring with $n+k+1$ variables to $\mathbb{C}$ and use this interpretation to develop a deformation theory of period in…
Gaussian distributions can be generalized from Euclidean space to a wide class of Riemannian manifolds. Gaussian distributions on manifolds are harder to make use of in applications since the normalisation factors, which we will refer to as partition functions, are complicated, intractable integrals in general that depend in a highly non-linear way on the mean of the given distribution. Nonetheless, on Riemannian symmetric spaces, the partition functions are independent of the mean and reduce to integrals over finite dimensional vector spaces. These are generally still hard to compute numerica…
