We explain how Gaussian integrals over ensemble of complex matrices with source matrices generate Hurwitz numbers of the most general type, namely, Hurwitz numbers with arbitrary orientable or non-orientable base surface and arbitrary profiles at branch points. We use the Feynman diagram approach. The connections with topological theories and also with certain classical and quantum integrable theories in particular with Witten's description of two-dimensional gauge theory are shown.
We establish a series of integral formulae involving the Hurwitz zeta function. Applications are given to integrals of Bernoulli polynomials, log Gamma(q) and log sin(q).
Several second moment and other integral evaluations for the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$, Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s,a)$, and Lerch zeta function $Φ(z,s,a)$ are presented. Additional corollaries that are obtained include previously known special cases for the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)=ζ(s,1)=Φ(1,s,1)$. An example special case is: $$\int_R {{|ζ(1/2+it)|^2} \over {t^2+1/4}}dt=2π[\ln(2π)-γ],$$ with $γ$ the Euler constant. The asymptotic forms of certain fractional part integrals, with and without logarithmic factors in the integrand, are presented. Extensions and other approaches are mentioned…
We study multi-matrix models which may be viewed as integrals of products of tau functions which depend on the eigenvalues of products of random matrices. In the present paper we consider tau functions of the hierarchy the two-component KP (semiinfinite relativistic Toda lattice) and of hierarchy of the BKP introduced by Kac and van de Leur. Sometimes such integrals are tau functions themselves. We consider models which generate Hurwitz numbers $H^{e},f$, where $e$ is the Euler characteristic of the base surface and $f$ is the number of branch points. We show that in case the integrands contai…
The Hurwitz-type Euler zeta function is defined as a deformation of the Hurwitz zeta function: \begin{equation*} ζ_E(s,x)=\sum_{n=0}^\infty\frac{(-1)^n}{(n+x)^s}. \end{equation*} In this paper, by using the method of Fourier expansions, we shall evaluate several integrals with integrands involving Hurwitz-type Euler zeta functions $ζ_E(s,x)$. Furthermore, the relations between the values of a class of the Hurwitz-type (or Lerch-type) Euler zeta functions at rational arguments have also been given.
Motivated by results for the HCIZ integral in Part I of this paper, we study the structure of monotone Hurwitz numbers, which are a desymmetrized version of classical Hurwitz numbers. We prove a number of results for monotone Hurwitz numbers and their generating series that are striking analogues of known results for the classical Hurwtiz numbers. These include explicit formulas for monotone Hurwitz numbers in genus 0 and 1, for all partitions, and an explicit rational form for the generating series in arbitrary genus. This rational form implies that, up to an explicit combinatorial scaling, m…
We establish a series of indefinite integral formulae involving the Hurwitz zeta function and other elementary and special functions related to it, such as the Bernoulli polynomials, ln sin (πq), ln Gamma(q) and the polygamma functions. Many of the results are most conveniently formulated in terms of a family of functions A_k(q):=k zeta'(1-k,q), where k is a natural number, and a family of polygamma functions of negative order, whose properties we study in some detail.
We shall consider the product of complex random matrices from the independent complex Ginibre ensembles. The product includes complex matrices $Z_i, Z_i^\dagger, \, i = 1, \ldots, n$ and $2n$ sources (complex matrices $C_i$ and $C_i^*$). Any such product can be represented by a chord diagram that encodes the order of the matrices in the product. We introduce the Euler characteristic E$^*$ of the chord diagram and show that the spectral correlation functions of the product generate Hurwitz numbers that enumerate nonequivalent branched coverings of Riemann surfaces of genus $g^*$. The role of so…
In this article, we prove that the complex convergence of the HCIZ free energy is equivalent to the non-vanishing of the HCIZ integral in a neighbourhood of $z=0$. Our approach is based on a combinatorial model for the Maclaurin coefficients of the HCIZ integral together with classical complex-analytic techniques.
We develop series representations for the Hurwitz and Riemann zeta functions in terms of generalized Bernoulli numbers (Nörlund polynomials), that give the analytic continuation of these functions to the entire complex plane. Special cases yield series representations of a wide variety of special functions and numbers, including log Gamma, the digamma, and polygamma functions. A further byproduct is that $ζ(n)$ values emerge as nonlinear Euler sums in terms of generalized harmonic numbers. We additionally obtain series and integral representations of the first Stieltjes constant $γ_1(a)$. The …
We consider the Laguerre partition function, and derive explicit generating functions for connected correlators with arbitrary integer powers of traces in terms of products of Hahn polynomials. It was recently proven that correlators have a topological expansion in terms of weakly or strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers, that can be explicitly computed from our formulae. As a second result we identify the Laguerre partition function with only positive couplings and a special value of the parameter $α=-1/2$ with the modified GUE partition function, which has recently been introduced as a generatin…
The KP $τ$-function of hypergeometric type serving as generating function for quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers is used to compute the Baker function and the corresponding adapted basis elements, expressed as absolutely convergent Laurent seriesin the spectral parameter. These are equivalently expressed as Mellin-Barnes integrals, analogously to Meijer $G$-functions, but with an infinite product of $Γ$-functions as integral kernel. A matrix model representation is derived for the $τ$-function evaluated at trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix.
The basis elements spanning the Sato Grassmannian element corresponding to the KP $τ$-function that serves as generating function for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions. Using their Mellin-Barnes integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral. Using the Mellin-Barnes integral transform of an infinite product of $Γ$ functions, a similar matrix integral representation is given for the KP $τ$-function that serves as generating function for quantum weighted Hurwitz …
The quantum spectral curve equation associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers is solved by generalized hypergeometric series. The basis elements spanning the corresponding Sato Grassmannian element are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions, or their asymptotic series. Using their Mellin integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral.
We prove that a generalisation of simple Hurwitz numbers due to Johnson, Pandharipande and Tseng satisfy the topological recursion of Eynard and Orantin. This generalises the Bouchard-Marino conjecture and places Hurwitz-Hodge integrals, which arise in the Gromov--Witten theory of target curves with orbifold structure, in the context of the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion.
We generalise a result of Kazarian regarding Kadomtsev-Petviashvili integrability for single Hodge integrals to general cohomological field theories related to Hurwitz-type counting problems or hypergeometric tau-functions. The proof uses recent results on the relations between hypergeometric tau-functions and topological recursion, as well as the Eynard-DOSS correspondence between topological recursion and cohomological field theories. In particular, we recover the result of Alexandrov of KP integrability for triple Hodge integrals with a Calabi-Yau condition.
We study mirror symmetry for orbifold Hurwitz numbers. We show that the Laplace transform of orbifold Hurwitz numbers satisfy a differential recursion, which is then proved to be equivalent to the integral recursion of Eynard and Orantin with spectral curve given by the r-Lambert curve. We argue that the r-Lambert curve also arises in the infinite framing limit of orbifold Gromov-Witten theory of [C3/(Z/rZ)]. Finally, we prove that the mirror model to orbifold Hurwitz numbers admits a quantum curve.
The main goal of the paper is to present a new approach via Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich's combinatorial/matrix model for the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves. A secondary goal is to present an exposition of the circle of ideas involved: Hurwitz numbers, Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line, matrix integrals, and the theory of random trees. Further topics will be treated in a sequel.
There is now a renewed interest to the Hurwitz tau-function, counting the isomorphism classes of Belyi pairs, arising in the study of equilateral triangulations and Grothiendicks's dessins d'enfant. It is distinguished by belonging to a particular family of Hurwitz tau-functions, possessing conventional Toda/KP integrability properties. We explain how the variety of recent observations about this function fits into the general theory of matrix model tau-functions. All such quantities possess a number of different descriptions, related in a standard way: these include Toda/KP integrability, sev…
We give a new proof of the fact that, near a turning point of the frozen boundary, the vertical tiles in a uniformly random lozenge tiling of a large sawtooth domain are distributed like the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix. Our argument uses none of the standard tools of integrable probability. In their place, it uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral as a generating function for desymmetrized Hurwitz numbers.
Inspired by J. Novak's works on the asymptotic behavior of the BGW and the HCIZ matrix integrals \cite{[N0]} and by the algebraic and geometric properties of the Hurwitz numbers \cite{[IP]}, \cite{[LZZ]}, \cite{[LR]}, \cite{[OP]}, \cite{[Z1]}, and by the symplectic surgery theory of the relative GW-invariants \cite{[IP]}, \cite{[LR]}, using the elements of the transform matrix from the integral Macdonald function with two parameters to the homogeneous symmetric power sum functions \cite{[M]}, we have constructed the Macdonald-Hurwitz numbers. As an application, we have constructed a series of …
We consider $d$-fold branched coverings of the projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$ and show that the hypergeometric tau function of the BKP hierarchy of Kac and van de Leur is the generating function for weighted sums of the related Hurwitz numbers. In particular we get the $\mathbb{RP}^2$ analogues of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ generating functions proposed by Okounkov and by Goulden and Jackson. Other examples are Hurwitz numbers weighted by the Hall-Littlewood and by the Macdonald polynomials. We also consider integrals of tau functions which generate projective Hurwitz numbers and Hurwitz numbers re…
The Stieltjes coefficients $γ_k(a)$ arise in the expansion of the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s,a)$ about its single simple pole at $s=1$ and are of fundamental and long-standing importance in analytic number theory and other disciplines. We present an array of exact results for the Stieltjes coefficients, including series representations and summatory relations. Other integral representations provide the difference of Stieltjes coefficients at rational arguments. The presentation serves to link a variety of topics in analysis and special function and special number theory, including logarithmic …
The purpose of this article is to put forward the claim that Hurwitz's paper "Uber die Erzeugung der Invarianten durch Integration." [Gott. Nachrichten (1897), 71-90] should be regarded as the origin of random matrix theory in mathematics. Here Hurwitz introduced and developed the notion of an invariant measure for the matrix groups $SO(N)$ and $U(N)$. He also specified a calculus from which the explicit form of these measures could be computed in terms of an appropriate parametrisation - Hurwitz chose to use Euler angles. This enabled him to define and compute invariant group integrals over $…
For $0\neq x>-1$ let $$Δ(x)={{\ln Γ(x+1)} \over x}.$$ Recently Adell and Alzer proved the complete monotonicity of $Δ'$ on $(-1,\infty)$ by giving an integral representation of $(-1)^n Δ^{(n+1)}(x)$ in terms of the Hurwitz zeta function $ζ(s,a)$. We reprove this integral representation in different ways, and then re-express it in terms of fractional part integrals. Special cases then have explicit evaluations. Other relations for $Δ^{(n+1)}(x)$ are presented, including its leading asymptotic form as $x \to \infty$.
We give formulae for the cumulants of complex Wishart (LUE) and inverse Wishart matrices (inverse LUE). Their large-$N$ expansions are generating functions of double (strictly and weakly) monotone Hurwitz numbers which count constrained factorisations in the symmetric group. The two expansions can be compared and combined with a duality relation proved in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. O'Connell and N. J. Simm, arXiv:1805.08760] to obtain: i) a combinatorial proof of the reflection formula between moments of LUE and inverse LUE at genus zero and, ii) a new functional relation between the gener…
We consider special series in ratios of the Schur functions which are defined by integers $\textsc{f}\ge 0$ and $\textsc{e} \le 2$, and also by the set of $3k$ parameters $n_i,q_i,t_i,\,i=1,..., k$. These series may be presented in form of matrix integrals. In case $k=0$ these series generates Hurwitz numbers for the $d$-fold branched covering of connected surfaces with a given Euler characteristic $\textsc{e}$ and arbitrary profiles at $\textsc{f}$ ramification points. If $k>0$ they generate weighted sums of the Hurwitz numbers with additional ramification points which are distributed between…
Simple Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched morphisms between Riemann surfaces with fixed ramification data. In recent years, several variants of this notion for genus $0$ base curves have appeared in the literature. Among them are so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers, which are related to the HCIZ integral in random matrix theory and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers which count certain Grothendieck dessins d'enfants. We generalise the notion of Hurwitz numbers to interpolations between simple, monotone and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers to any genus and any number of arbitrary but fixed ramif…
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so fa…
We solve problem x proposed by O. Oloa, AMM xxx 2012 {\bf 119?} (to appear), p. yyy for certain definite logarithmic integrals. A number of generating functions are developed with certain coefficients $p_n$, and some extensions are presented. The explicit relation of $p_n$ to Nörlund numbers $B_n^{(n)}$ is discussed. Certain inequalities are conjectured for the $\{p_n\}$ sequence of coefficients, including its convexity, and an upper bound is demonstrated. It is shown that $p_n$ values may be used to express the Stieltjes constants for the Hurwitz and Riemann zeta functions, as well as values …
The Stieltjes constants $γ_k$ appear in the regular part of the Laurent expansion of the Riemman and Hurwitz zeta functions. We demonstrate that these coefficients may be written as certain summations over mathematical constants and specialized hypergeometric functions $_pF_{p+1}$. This family of results generalizes a representation of the Euler constant in terms of a summation over values of the trigonometric integrals Si or Ci. The series representations are suitable for acceleration. As byproducts, we evaluate certain sine-logarithm integrals and present the leading asymptotic form of the p…
Generalized Kontsevich Matrix Model (GKMM) with a certain given potential is the partition function of $r$-spin intersection numbers. We represent this GKMM in terms of fermions and expand it in terms of the Schur polynomials by boson-fermion correspondence, and link it with a Hurwitz partition function and a Hodge partition by operators in a $\widehat{GL}(\infty)$ group. Then, from a $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint of the partition function of $r$-spin intersection numbers, we get a $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint for the Hodge partition function. The $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint completely determines the S…
