Preliminary results toward the analysis of the Hamiltonian structure of multifield theories describing complex materials are mustered: we involve the invariance under the action of a general Lie group of the balance of substructural interactions. Poisson brackets are also introduced in the material representation to account for general material substructures. A Hamilton-Jacobi equation suitable for multifield models is presented. Finally, a spatial version of all these topics is discussed without making use of the notion of paragon setting.
This paper is devoted to studying symmetries of k-symplectic Hamiltonian and Lagrangian first-order classical field theories. In particular, we define symmetries and Cartan symmetries and study the problem of associating conservation laws to these symmetries, stating and proving Noether's theorem in different situations for the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian cases. We also characterize equivalent Lagrangians, which lead to an introduction of Lagrangian gauge symmetries, as well as analyzing their relation with Cartan symmetries.
We study the Hamiltonian dynamics of a spaceship in the background of Alcubierre and Gödel metrics. We derive the Hamiltonian vector fields governing the system evolution, construct and discuss related recursion operators generating the constants of motion. Besides, we characterize relevant master symmetries.
New symmetry transformations for the n-dimensional Toda lattice are presented. Their existence allows for the construction of several first order Lagrangian structures associated to them. The multi-Hamiltonian structures are derived from Lagrangians in detail. The set of symmetries generates a Lie algebra.
We consider symmetries and perturbed symmetries of canonical Hamiltonian equations of motion. Specifically we consider the case in which the Hamiltonian equations exhibit a Lambda symmetry under some Lie point vector field. After a brief survey of the relationships between standard symmetries and the existence of first integrals, we recall the definition and the properties of Lambda symmetries. We show that in the presence of a Lambda symmetry for the Hamiltonian equations, one can introduce the notion of "Lambda-constant of motion". The presence of a Lambda symmetry leads also to a nice and u…
After a brief survey of the definition and the properties of Lambda-symmetries in the general context of dynamical systems, the notion of "Lambda-constant of motion'' for Hamiltonian equations is introduced. If the Hamiltonian problem is derived from a Lambda-invariant Lagrangian, it is shown how the Lagrangian Lambda-invariance can be transferred into the Hamiltonian context and shown that the Hamiltonian equations turn out to be Lambda-symmetric. Finally, the "partial'' (Lagrangian) reduction of the Euler-Lagrange equations is compared with the reduction obtained for the corresponding Hamilt…
We discuss the relation between symmetries and conservation laws in the realm of classical field theories based on the Hamiltonian constraint. In this approach, spacetime positions and field values are treated on equal footing, and a generalized multivector-valued momentum is introduced. We derive a field-theoretic Hamiltonian version of the Noether theorem, and identify generalized Noether currents with the momentum contracted with symmetry-generating vector fields. Their relation to the traditional vectorial Noether currents is then established. Throughout, we employ the mathematical languag…
We consider the Hamiltonian constraint formulation of classical field theories, which treats spacetime and the space of fields symmetrically, and utilizes the concept of momentum multivector. The gauge field is introduced to compensate for non-invariance of the Hamiltonian under local transformations. It is a position-dependent linear mapping, which couples to the Hamiltonian by acting on the momentum multivector. We investigate symmetries of the ensuing gauged Hamiltonian, and propose a generic form of the gauge field strength. In examples we show how a generic gauge field can be specialized …
We review in detail the Hamiltonian dynamics for constrained systems. Emphasis is put on the total Hamiltonian system rather than on the extended Hamiltonian system. We provide a systematic analysis of (global and local) symmetries in total Hamiltonian systems. In particular, in analogue to total Hamiltonians, we introduce the notion of total Noether charges. Grassmannian degrees of freedom are also addressed in details.
In this paper we will present Lagrangian and Hamiltonian $k$-symplectic formalisms, we will recall the notions of symmetry and conservation law and we will define the notion of pseudosymmetry as a natural extension of symmetry. Using symmetries and pseudosymmetries, without the help of a Noether type theorem, we will obtain new kinds of conservation laws for $k$-symplectic Hamiltonian systems and $k$-symplectic Lagrangian systems.
We consider Noether symmetries within Hamiltonian setting as transformations that preserve Poincaré-Cartan form, i.e., as symmetries of characteristic line bundles of nondegenerate 1-forms. In the case when the Poincaré-Cartan form is contact, the explicit expression for the symmetries in the inverse Noether theorem is given. As examples, we consider natural mechanical systems, in particular the Kepler problem. Finally, we prove a variant of the theorem on complete (non-commutative) integrability in terms of Noether symmetries of time-dependent Hamiltonian systems.
A complete geometric classification of symmetries of autonomous Hamiltonian mechanical systems is established; explaining how to obtain their associated conserved quantities in all cases. In particular, first we review well-known results and properties about the symmetries of the Hamiltonian and of the symplectic form and then some new kinds of non-symplectic symmetries and their conserved quantities are introduced and studied.
The most common physical formalisms are the Lagrangian formalism and the Hamiltonian formalism. From the superficial point of view, they are one and the same, but rewritten in other terms. However, it seems that the Hamiltonian formalism has a richer structure and is more convenient for studying the electromagnetic field, especially in the formalization of its geometrization. Unfortunately for field problems, there is a whole set of Hamiltonian formalisms. The authors study the applicability of different variants of the Hamiltonian formalism to the problems of electrodynamics. In this paper we…
Several dynamical symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian are reviewed in a systematic manner and the conditions under which such symmetries hold. These include relativistic spin and orbital angular momentum symmetries, SO(4)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the Dirac Hydrogen atom, SU(3)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the relativistic simple harmonic oscillator. The energy spectrum in each case is calculated from group-theoretic considerations.
Constants of motion, Lagrangians and Hamiltonians admitted by a family of relevant nonlinear oscillators are derived using a geometric formalism. The theory of the Jacobi last multiplier allows us to find Lagrangian descriptions and constants of the motion. An application of the jet bundle formulation of symmetries of differential equations is presented in the second part of the paper. After a short review of the general formalism, the particular case of non-local symmetries is studied in detail by making use of an extended formalism. The theory is related to some results previously obtained b…
In the framework of polysymplectic Hamiltonian formalism, degenerate Lagrangian field systems are described as multi-Hamiltonian systems with Lagrangian constraints. The physically relevant case of degenerate quadratic Lagrangians is analized in detail, and the Koszul--Tate resolution of Lagrangian constraints is constructed in an explicit form. The particular case of Hamiltonian mechanics with time-dependent constraints is studied.
In this paper we study symmetries, Newtonoid vector fields, conservation laws, Noether's Theorem and its converse, in the framework of the $k$-symplectic formalism, using the Frölicher-Nijenhuis formalism on the space of $k^1$-velocities of the configuration manifold. For the case $k=1$, it is well known that Cartan symmetries induce and are induced by constants of motions, and these results are known as Noether's Theorem and its converse. For the case $k>1$, we provide a new proof for Noether's Theorem, which shows that, in the $k$-symplectic formalism, each Cartan symmetry induces a conserva…
We show that a Minkowski phase space endowed with a bracket relatively to a conformable differential realizes a Poisson algebra, confering a bi-Hamiltonian structure to the resulting manifold. We infer that the related Hamiltonian vector field is an infinitesimal Noether symmetry, and compute the corresponding deformed recursion operator. Besides, using the Hamiltonian-Jacobi separability, we construct recursion operators for Hamiltonian vector fields in conformable Poisson-Schwarzschild and Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) manifolds, and derive related constants of motion, Christoff…
In the recent paper by one of the authors (MBS) and A. A. Malykh on the classification of second-order PDEs with four independent variables that possess partner symmetries (J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. Vol. 42 (2009) 395202 (20pp)), mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation appear as closely related canonical equations admitting partner symmetries. Here for the mixed heavenly equation and Husain equation, formulated in a two-component form, we present recursion operators, Lax pairs of Olver-Ibragimov-Shabat type and discover their Lagrangians, symplectic and bi-Hamiltonian structure. We obtain a…
Second-order Lagrangian densities admitting a first-order Hamiltonian formalism are studied; namely, i) for each second-order Lagrangian density on an arbitrary fibred manifold $p\colon E\to N$ the Poincaré-Cartan form of which is projectable onto $J^1E$, by using a new notion of regularity previously introduced, a first-order Hamiltonian formalism is developed for such a class of variational problems; ii) the existence of first-order equivalent Lagrangians are discussed from a local point of view as well as global; iii) this formalism is then applied to classical Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian a…
In this paper we consider the relation between symmetries and first integrals for both continuous canonical Hamiltonian equations and discrete Hamiltonian equations. We observe that canonical Hamiltonian equations can be obtained by variational principle from an action functional and consider invariance properties of this functional as it is done in Lagrangian formalism. We rewrite the well--known Noether's identity in terms of the Hamiltonian function and symmetry operators. This approach, based on symmetries of the Hamiltonian action, provides a simple and clear way to construct first integr…
In some recent literature the role of non self-adjoint Hamiltonians, $H\neq H^\dagger$, is often considered in connection with gain-loss systems. The dynamics for these systems is, most of the times, given in terms of a Schrödinger equation. In this paper we rather focus on the Heisenberg-like picture of quantum mechanics, stressing the (few) similarities and the (many) differences with respected to the standard Heisenberg picture for systems driven by self-adjoint Hamiltonians. In particular, the role of the symmetries, *-derivations and integrals of motion is discussed.
In the jet bundle description of Field Theories (multisymplectic models, in particular), there are several choices for the multimomentum bundle where the covariant Hamiltonian formalism takes place. As a consequence, several proposals for this formalism can be stated, and, on each one of them, the differentiable structures needed for setting the formalism are obtained in different ways. In this work we make an accurate study of some of these Hamiltonian formalisms, showing their equivalence. In particular, the geometrical structures (canonical or not) needed for the Hamiltonian formalism, are …
There are many evolution partial differential equations which can be cast into Hamiltonian form. Conservation laws of these equations are related to one-parameter Hamiltonian symmetries admitted by the PDEs. The same result holds for semidiscrete Hamiltonian equations. In this paper we consider semidiscrete canonical Hamiltonian equations. Using symmetries, we find conservation laws for the semidiscretized nonlinear wave equation and Schrodinger equation.
We provide new insights into the contact Hamiltonian and Lagrangian formulations of dissipative mechanical systems. In particular, we state a new form of the contact dynamical equations, and we review two recently presented Lagrangian formalisms, studying their equivalence. We define several kinds of symmetries for contact dynamical systems, as well as the notion of dissipation laws, prove a dissipation theorem and give a way to construct conserved quantities. Some well-known examples of dissipative systems are discussed.
We state the intrinsic form of the Hamiltonian equations of first-order Classical Field theories in three equivalent geometrical ways: using multivector fields, jet fields and connections. Thus, these equations are given in a form similar to that in which the Hamiltonian equations of mechanics are usually given. Then, using multivector fields, we study several aspects of these equations, such as the existence and non-uniqueness of solutions, and the integrability problem. In particular, these problems are analyzed for the case of Hamiltonian systems defined in a submanifold of the multimomentu…
The existence of bi-Hamiltonian structures for the rational Harmonic Oscillator (non-central harmonic oscillator with rational ratio of frequencies) is analyzed by making use of the geometric theory of symmetries. We prove that these additional structures are a consequence of the existence of dynamical symmetries of non-symplectic (non-canonical) type. The associated recursion operators are also obtained.
We review the Schwinger-Keldysh, or in-in, formalism for studying quantum dynamics of systems out-of-equilibrium. The main motivation is to rephrase well known facts in the subject in a mathematically elegant setting, by exhibiting a set of BRST symmetries inherent in the construction. We show how these fundamental symmetries can be made manifest by working in a superspace formalism. We argue that this rephrasing is extremely efficacious in understanding low energy dynamics following the usual renormalization group approach, for the BRST symmetries are robust under integrating out degrees of f…
We discuss geometric properties of non-Noether symmetries and their possible applications in integrable Hamiltonian systems. Correspondence between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws is revisited. It is shown that in regular Hamiltonian systems such a symmetries canonically lead to a Lax pairs on the algebra of linear operators on cotangent bundle over the phase space. Relationship between the non-Noether symmetries and other wide spread geometric methods of generating conservation laws such as bi-Hamiltonian formalism, bidifferential calculi and Frolicher-Nijenhuis geometry is consi…
The study of the symmetry of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator initiated in [Nucl. Phys. B 885 (2014) 150] is continued with special emphasis put on the Hamiltonian formalism. The symmetry generators within the original Pais and Uhlenbeck Hamiltonian approach as well as the canonical transformation to the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian framework are derived. The resulting algebra of generators appears to be the central extension of the one obtained on the Lagrangian level; in particular, in the case of odd frequencies one obtains the centrally extended l-conformal Newton-Hooke algebra. In this important cas…
We show how to derive asymptotic charges for field theories on manifolds with "asymptotic" boundary, using the BV-BFV formalism. We also prove that the conservation of said charges follows naturally from the vanishing of the BFV boundary action, and show how this construction generalises Noether's procedure. Using the BV-BFV viewpoint, we resolve the controversy present in the literature, regarding the status of large gauge transformation as symmetries of the asymptotic structure. We show that even though the symplectic structure at the asymptotic boundary is not preserved under these transfor…
The sO(3) and the Lorentz algebra symmetries breaking with gauge curvatures are studied by means of a covariant Hamiltonian. The restoration of these algebra symmetries in flat and curved spaces is performed and led to the apparition of a monopole field. Then in the context of the Lorentz algebra we consider an application to the gravitoelectromagnetism theory. In this last case a qualitative relation giving a mass spectrum for dyons is established.
We study point symmetries, the corresponding conserved densities and hierarchies of four new bi-Hamiltonian heavenly systems in 3+1 dimensions which we discovered recently. We exhibit an important role played by the inverse recursion operators in the description of the hierarchies. Their use is twofold, either to provide the correct bi-Hamiltonian representation or to generate nonlocal symmetry flows. Invariant solutions w.r.t. nonlocal symmetries will generate (anti-)self-dual gravitational metrics which do not admit Killing vectors which is a characteristic feature of $K3$ gravitational inst…
In this paper, we extend the well-known Noether theorem for Lagrangian systems to contact Lagrangian systems. We introduce a classification of infinitesimal symmetries and obtain the corresponding dissipated quantities. We notice that in contact dynamics, the existence of infinitesimal symmetries does not produce conserved quantities, but functions that dissipate at the same rate than the energy; so, the corresponding quotients are true conserved quantities.
We study the hydrodynamic-type system of differential equations modeling isothermal no-slip drift flux. Using the facts that the system is partially coupled and its subsystem reduces to the (1+1)-dimensional Klein--Gordon equation, we exhaustively describe generalized symmetries, cosymmetries and local conservation laws of this system. A generating set of local conservation laws under the action of generalized symmetries is proved to consist of two zeroth-order conservation laws. The subspace of translation-invariant conservation laws is singled out from the entire space of local conservation …
It is shown that if the C operator for a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian with simple eigenvalues is not unique, then it is unbounded. Apart from the special cases of finite-matrix Hamiltonians and Hamiltonians generated by differential expressions with PT-symmetric point interactions, the usual situation is that the C operator is unbounded. The fact that the C operator is unbounded is significant because, while there is a formal equivalence between a PT-symmetric Hamiltonian and a conventionally Hermitian Hamiltonian in the sense that the two Hamiltonians are isospectral, the Hilbert spaces are inequ…
Covariant (polysymplectic) Hamiltonian field theory is formulated as a particular Lagrangian theory on a polysymplectic phase space that enables one to quantize it in the framework of familiar quantum field theory.
We have briefly analyzed the existence of the pseudofermionic structure of multilevel pseudo-Hermitian systems with odd time-reversal and higher order involutive symmetries. We have shown that 2N-level Hamiltonians with N-order eigenvalue degeneracy can be represented in the oscillator-like form in terms of pseudofermionic creation and annihilation operators for both real and complex eigenvalues. The example of most general four-level traceless Hamiltonian with odd time-reversal symmetry, which is an extension of the SO(5) Hermitian Hamiltonian, is considered in greater and explicit detail.
We introduce a first order description of linearized non-minimal ($n=-1$) supergravity in superspace, using the unconstrained prepotential superfield instead of the conventionally constrained super one forms. In this description, after integrating out the connection-like auxiliary superfield of first-order formalism, the superspace action is expressed in terms of a single superfield which combines the prepotential and compensator superfields. We use this description to construct the supersymmetric cubic interaction vertex $3/2-3/2-1/2$ which describes the electromagnetic interaction between tw…
Most classical mechanical systems are based on dynamical variables whose values are real numbers. Energy conservation is then guaranteed if the dynamical equations are phrased in terms of a Hamiltonian function, which then leads to differential equations in the time variable. If these real dynamical variables are instead replaced by integers, and also the time variable is restricted to integers, it appears to be hard to enforce energy conservation unless one can also derive a Hamiltonian formalism for that case. We here show how the Hamiltonian formalism works here, and how it may yield the us…
We derive a systematic and recursive approach to local conservation laws and the Hamiltonian formalism for the Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) hierarchy. Our methods rely on a recursive approach to the AL hierarchy using Laurent polynomials and on asymptotic expansions of the Green's function of the AL Lax operator, a five-diagonal finite difference operator.
We investigate the asymptotic symmetry group of a scalar field minimally-coupled to an abelian gauge field using the Hamiltonian formulation. This extends previous work by Henneaux and Troessaert on the pure electromagnetic case. We deal with minimally coupled massive and massless scalar fields and find that they behave differently insofar as the latter do not allow for canonically implemented asymptotic boost symmetries. We also consider the abelian Higgs model and show that its asymptotic canonical symmetries reduce to the Poincaré group in an unproblematic fashion.
Degeneracies in the energy spectra of physical systems are commonly considered to be either of accidental character or induced by symmetries of the Hamiltonian. We develop an approach to explain degeneracies by tracing them back to symmetries of an isospectral effective Hamiltonian derived by subsystem partitioning. We provide an intuitive interpretation of such latent symmetries by relating them to corresponding local symmetries in the powers of the underlying Hamiltonian matrix. As an application, we relate the degeneracies induced by the rotation symmetry of a real Hamiltonian to a non-abel…
The Rusk-Skinner formalism was developed in order to give a geometrical unified formalism for describing mechanical systems. It incorporates all the characteristics of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian descriptions of these systems (including dynamical equations and solutions, constraints, Legendre map, evolution operators, equivalence, etc.). In this work we extend this unified framework to first-order classical field theories, and show how this description comprises the main features of the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms, both for the regular and singular cases. This formulation is a first s…
The Lagrangian-Hamiltonian unified formalism of R. Skinner and R. Rusk was originally stated for autonomous dynamical systems in classical mechanics. It has been generalized for non-autonomous first-order mechanical systems, as well as for first-order and higher-order field theories. However, a complete generalization to higher-order mechanical systems has yet to be described. In this work, after reviewing the natural geometrical setting and the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formalisms for higher-order autonomous mechanical systems, we develop a complete generalization of the Lagrangian-Hamiltoni…
The Lorentz-covariant quantization performed in the Hamiltonian path-integral formalism for massless non-Abelian gauge fields has been achieved. In this quantization, the Lorentz condition, as a constraint, must be introduced initially and incorporated into the Yang-Mills Lagrangian by the Lagrange undetermined multiplier method. In this way, it is found that all Lorentz components of a vector potential have thier corresponding conjugate canonical variables. This fact allows us to define Lorentz-invariant poisson brackets and carry out the quantization in a Lorent-covariant manner. Key words: …
The N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy in N=2 superspace is considered and its rich symmetry structure is uncovered. New nonpolynomial and nonlocal, bosonic and fermionic symmetries and Hamiltonians, bi-Hamiltonian structure as well as a recursion operator connecting all symmetries and Hamiltonian structures of the N=2 α=1 KdV hierarchy are constructed in explicit form. It is observed that the algebra of symmetries of the N=2 supersymmetric α=1 KdV hierarchy possesses two different subalgebras of N=2 supersymmetry.
We generalize the Lagrangian-Hamiltonian formalism of Skinner and Rusk to higher order field theories on fiber bundles. As a byproduct we solve the long standing problem of defining, in a coordinate free manner, a Hamiltonian formalism for higher order Lagrangian field theories. Namely, our formalism does only depend on the action functional and, therefore, unlike previously proposed ones, is free from any relevant ambiguity.
The elements of the contrained dynamics algorithm in the De Donder-Weyl (DW) Hamiltonian theory for degenerate Lagrangian theories are discussed. A generalization of the Dirac bracket to the DW Hamiltonian theory with second class constraints (defined in the text) is presented.
This article aims to study non-local Lagrangians with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. We obtain an extension of Noether's theorem and Noether's identities for such Lagrangians. We then set up a Hamiltonian formalism for them. In addition, we show that $n$-order local Lagrangians can be treated as a particular case and the standard results can be recovered. Finally, this formalism is applied to the case of $p$-adic open string field.
We discuss the role of the symmetries in photonic crystals and classify them according to the Cartan-Altland-Zirnbauer scheme. Of particular importance are complex conjugation C and time-reversal T, but we identify also other significant symmetries. Borrowing the jargon of the classification theory of topological insulators, we show that C is a particle-hole-type symmetry rather than a time-reversal symmetry if one consider the Maxwell operator in the first-order formalism where the dynamical Maxwell equations can be rewritten as a Schrödinger equation; The symmetry which implements physical t…
The purpose of the paper is to show that, in low dimensions, the WDVV equations are bi-Hamiltonian. The invariance of the bi-Hamiltonian formalism is proved for $N=3$. More examples in higher dimensions show that the result might hold in general. The invariance group of the bi-Hamiltonian pairs that we find for WDVV equations is the group of projective transformations. The significance of projective invariance of WDVV equations is discussed in detail. The computer algebra programs that were used for calculations throughout the paper are provided in a GitHub repository.
The Dirac's formalism for constrained systems is applied to the analysis of time-dependent Hamiltonians in the extended phase space. We show that the Lewis invariant is a reparametrization invariant and we calculate the Feynman propagator using the extended phase description. We show that the quantum phase of the Feynman propagator is given by the boundary term of the canonical transformation of the extended phase space.
