The $τ$-function theory of Painlevé systems is used to derive recurrences in the rank $n$ of certain random matrix averages over U(n). These recurrences involve auxilary quantities which satisfy discrete Painlevé equations. The random matrix averages include cases which can be interpreted as eigenvalue distributions at the hard edge and in the bulk of matrix ensembles with unitary symmetry. The recurrences are illustrated by computing the value of a sequence of these distributions as $n$ varies, and demonstrating convergence to the value of the appropriate limiting distribution.
The construction and role of symmetries for difference equations are now well known. In this paper, the symmetry analysis of the discrete Painleve equations is considered. We assume that the characteristics depend on $n$ and $u_n$ only and we obtain a number of symmetries. These symmetries are used to construct exact solutions in some cases.
We construct cluster algebras the variables and coefficients of which satisfy the discrete mKdV equation, the discrete Toda equation and other integrable bilinear equations, several of which lead to q-discrete Painlevé equations. These cluster algebras are obtained from quivers with an infinite number of vertices or with the mutation-period property. We will also show that a suitable transformation of quivers corresponds to a reduction of the difference equation.
We express discrete Painlevé equations as discrete Hamiltonian systems. The discrete Hamiltonian systems here mean the canonical transformations defined by generating functions. Our construction relies on the classification of the discrete Painlevé equations based on the surface-type. The discrete Hamiltonians we obtain are written in the logarithm and dilogarithm functions.
We examine whether the Painlevé property is a necessary condition for the integrability of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. We show that for a large class of linearisable systems this is not the case. In the discrete domain, we investigate whether the singularity confinement property is satisfied for the discrete analogues of the non-Painlevé continuous linearisable systems. We find that while these discrete systems are themselves linearisable, they possess nonconfined singularities.
Hirota's discrete KdV equation is an integrable partial difference equation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, which approaches the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in a continuum limit. In this paper, we show that its multiplicative-discrete versions have the special solutions given by the solutions of $q$-Painlevé equations of types $A_J^{(1)}$ $(J=3,4,5,6)$.
In this paper, we provide a comprehensive method for constructing Lax pairs of discrete Painlevé equations by using a reduced hypercube structure. In particular, we consider the $A_5^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé system which has the affine Weyl group symmetry of type $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. Two new Lax pairs are found.
In this paper, we construct two lattices from the $τ$ functions of $A_4^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé equations, on which quad-equations of ABS type appear. Moreover, using the reduced hypercube structure, we obtain the Lax pairs of the $A_4^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé equations.
In this study, we consider the asymptotic behaviour of the first discrete Painlev\{e} equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using an asymptotic series expansion, we identify two types of solutions which are pole-free within some sector of the complex plane containing the positive real axis. Using exponential asymptotic techniques, we determine the Stokes Phenomena effects present within these solutions, and hence the regions in which the asymptotic series expression is valid. From a careful analysis of the switching behaviour across Stokes lines, we find that the fir…
In this paper we study a certain recurrence relation, that can be used to generate ladder operators for the Laguerre Unitary ensemble, from the point of view of Sakai's geometric theory of Painlevé equations. On one hand, this gives us one more detailed example of the appearance of discrete Painlevé equations in the theory of orthogonal polynomials. On the other hand, it serves as a good illustration of the effectiveness of a recently proposed procedure on how to reduce such recurrences to some canonical discrete Painlevé equations.
We present an asymmetric $q$-Painlevé equation. We will derive this using $q$-orthogonal polynomials with respect to generalized Freud weights: their recurrence coefficients will obey this $q$-Painlevé equation (up to a simple transformation). We will show a stable method of computing a special solution which gives the recurrence coefficients. We establish a connection with $α-q-P_V$.
An overview is given on recent developments in the affine Weyl group approach to Painlevé equations and discrete Painlevé equations, based on the joint work with Y. Yamada and K. Kajiwara.
We investigate some of the discrete Painleve equations (dPII, qPI and qPII) and the discrete KdV equation over finite fields. The first part concerns the discrete Painleve equations. We review some of the ideas introduced in our previous papers and give some detailed discussions. We first show that they are well defined by extending the domain according to the theory of the space of initial conditions. We then extend them to the field of p-adic numbers and observe that they have a property that is called an `almost good reduction' of dynamical systems over finite fields. We can use this proper…
We investigate the discrete Painleve II equation over finite fields. We treat it over local fields and observe that it has a property that is similar to the good reduction over finite fields. We can use this property, which seems to be an arithmetic analogue of singularity confinement, to avoid the indeterminacy of the equations over finite fields and to obtain special solutions from those defined originally over fields of characteristic zero.
The solutions of the discrete Painlevé equation I were constructed in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic $ψ$ functions for algebraic curves of genera one and two. For the case of genus two, there appear higher order difference equations which naturally contain the discrete Painlevé equation I as a special case.
It is well known that two-dimensional mappings preserving a rational elliptic fibration, like the Quispel-Roberts-Thompson mappings, can be deautonomized to discrete Painlevé equations. However, the dependence of this procedure on the choice of a particular elliptic fiber has not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper we establish a way of performing the deautonomization for a pair of an autonomous mapping and a fiber. %By choosing a particular Starting from a single autonomous mapping but varying the type of a chosen fiber, we obtain different types of discrete Painlevé equations using…
The `restoration method' is a novel method we recently introduced for systematically deriving discrete Painlevé equations. In this method we start from a given Painlevé equation, typically with E$_8^{(1)}$ symmetry, obtain its autonomous limit and construct all possible QRT-canonical forms of mappings that are equivalent to it by homographic transformations. Discrete Painlevé equations are then obtained by deautonomising the various mappings thus obtained. We apply the restoration method to two challenging examples, one of which does not lead to a QRT mapping at the autonomous limit but we ver…
We derive the discrete Painlevé equations associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$ that can be represented by an (in the QRT sense) "asymmetric" trihomographic system. The method used in this paper is based on singularity confinement. We start by obtaining all possible singularity patterns for a general asymmetric trihomographic system and discard those patterns which cannot lead to confined singularities. Working with the remaining ones we implement the confinement conditions and derive the corresponding discrete Painlevé equations, which involve two variables. By eliminating either of…
By considering the normalizers of reflection subgroups of types $A_1^{(1)}$ and $A_3^{(1)}$ in $\widetilde{W}\left(D_5^{(1)}\right)$, two normalizers: $\widetilde{W}\left(A_3\times A_1\right)^{(1)}\ltimes {W}(A_1^{(1)})$ and $\widetilde{W}\left(A_1\times A_1\right)^{(1)}\ltimes {W}(A_3^{(1)})$ can be constructed from a $(A_{3}\times A_1\times A_1)^{(1)}$ type subroot system. These two symmetries arose in the studies of discrete \Pa equations \cite{KNY:2002, Takenawa:03, OS:18}, where certain non-translational elements of infinite order were shown to give rise to discrete \Pa equations. We clar…
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the second discrete Painlevé equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using asymptotic power series, we find solutions that are asymptotically pole-free within some region of the complex plane. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. We subsequently apply exponential asymptotic techniques to investigate such phenomena, and obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis, we determine t…
Over the last decade it has become clear that discrete Painlevé equations appear in a wide range of important mathematical and physical problems. Thus, the question of recognizing a given non-autonomous recurrence as a discrete Painlevé equation and determining its type according to Sakai's classification scheme, understanding whether it is equivalent to some known (model) example, and especially finding an explicit change of coordinates transforming it to such an example, becomes one of the central ones. Fortunately, Sakai's geometric theory provides an almost algorithmic procedure for answer…
In this work we show that the $ N\times N $ Toeplitz determinants with the symbols $ z^μ\exp(-{1/2}\sqrt{t}(z+1/z)) $ and $ (1+z)^μ(1+1/z)^ν\exp(tz) $ -- known $τ$-functions for the \PIIIa and \PV systems -- are characterised by nonlinear recurrences for the reflection coefficients of the corresponding orthogonal polynomial system on the unit circle. It is shown that these recurrences are entirely equivalent to the discrete Painlevé equations associated with the degenerations of the rational surfaces $ D^{(1)}_{6} \to E^{(1)}_{7} $ (discrete Painlevé {\rm II}) and $ D^{(1)}_{5} \to E^{(1)}_{6}…
We present a method of determining a Lax representation for similarity reductions of autonomous and non-autonomous partial difference equations. This method may be used to obtain Lax representations that are general enough to provide the Lax integrability for entire hierarchies of reductions. A main result is, as an example of this framework, how we may obtain the q-Painlevé equation whose group of Bäcklund transformations is an affine Weyl group of type E_6^{(1)} as a similarity reduction of the discrete Schwarzian Korteweg-de Vries equation.
A discretization of Painlevé VI equation was obtained by Jimbo and Sakai in 1996. There are two ways to quantize it: 1) use the affine Weyl group symmetry (of $D_5^{(1)}$) (Hasegawa, 2011), 2) Lax formalism i.e. monodromy preserving point of view. It turns out that the second approach is also successful and gives the same quantization as in the first approach.
A geometric study of two 4-dimensional mappings is given. By the resolution of indeterminacy they are lifted to pseudo-automorphisms of rational varieties obtained from $({\mathbb P}^1)^4$ by blowing-up along sixteen 2-dimensional subvarieties. The symmetry groups, the invariants and the degree growth rates are computed from the linearisation on the corresponding Néron-Severi bilattices. It turns out that the deautonomised version of one of the mappings is a Bäcklund transformation of a direct product of the fourth Painlevé equation which has $A_2^{(1)}+A_2^{(1)}$ type affine Weyl group symmet…
Discrete versions of the Painleve equations (dPII and qPII) over finite fields are studied. We first show that they are well defined by extending the domain according to the theory of the space of initial conditions, taking the dPII equation as an example. Then we define them over the field of p-adic numbers and see that they have a property that is similar to the good reduction of dynamical systems modulo a prime. This property is called 'almost good reduction'. We study the q-discrete analogue of the Painleve II equation in this paper, following the method in our previous work (arXiv: 1206.4…
We study the analytic properties of a matrix discrete system introduced in [7]. The singularity confinement for this system is shown to hold generically, i.e. in the whole space of parameters except possibly for algebraic subvarieties. This paves the way to a generalization of Painleve analysis to discrete matrix models.
We present a systematic method for the construction of discrete Painlevé equations. The method, dubbed `restoration', allows one to obtain all discrete Painlevé equations that share a common autonomous limit, up to homographic transformations, starting from any one of those limits. As the restoration process crucially depends on the classification of canonical forms for the mappings in the QRT family, it can in principle only be applied to mappings that belong to that family. However, as we show in this paper, it is still possible to obtain the results of the restoration even when the initial …
We present a systematic and quite elementary method for constructing discrete Painlevé equations in the degeneration cascade for E$_8^{(1)}$. Starting from the invariant for the autonomous limit of the E$_8^{(1)}$ equation one wishes to study, the method relies on choosing simple homographies that will cast this invariant into certain judiciously chosen canonical forms. These new invariants lead to mappings the deautonomisations of which allow us to build up the entire degeneration cascade of the original mapping. We explain the method on three examples, two symmetric mappings and an asymmetri…
We study factorizations of rational matrix functions with simple poles on the Riemann sphere. For the quadratic case (two poles) we show, using multiplicative representations of such matrix functions, that a good coordinate system on this space is given by a mix of residue eigenvectors of the matrix and its inverse. Our approach is motivated by the theory of discrete isomonodromic transformations and their relationship with difference Painlevé equations. In particular, in these coordinates, basic isomonodromic transformations take the form of the discrete Euler-Lagrange equations. Secondly we …
The goal of this paper is to investigate the missing part of the story about the relationship between the orthogonal polynomial ensembles and Painlevé equations. Namely, we consider the $q$-Racah polynomial ensemble and show that the one-interval gap probabilities in this case can be expressed through a solution of the discrete $q$-P$\left(E_7^{(1)}/A_{1}^{(1)}\right)$ equation. Our approach also gives a new Lax pair for this equation. This Lax pair has an interesting additional involutive symmetry structure.
In this paper the Riemann-Hilbert problem, with jump supported on a appropriate curve on the complex plane with a finite endpoint at the origin, is used for the study of corresponding matrix biorthogonal polynomials associated with Laguerre type matrices of weights ---which are constructed in terms of a given matrix Pearson equation. First and second order differential systems for the fundamental matrix, solution of the mentioned Riemann-Hilbert problem are derived. An explicit and general example is presented to illustrate the theoretical results of the work. Related matrix eigenvalue problem…
A recently formulated conjecture of Gamayun, Iorgov and Lisovyy gives an asymptotic expansion of the Jimbo--Miwa--Ueno isomonodromic $τ$-function for certain Painlevé transcendents. The coefficients in this expansion are given in terms of conformal blocks of a two-dimensional conformal field theory, which can be written as infinite sums over pairs of partitions. In this note a discrete matrix model is proposed on a lattice whose partition function can be used to obtain a multiple integral representation for the length restricted partial sums of the Painlevé conformal blocks. This leads to expr…
Since the classification of discrete Painlevé equations in terms of rational surfaces, there has been much interest in the range of integrable equations arising from each of the 22 surface types in Sakai's list. For all but the most degenerate type in the list, the surfaces come in families which admit affine Weyl groups of symmetries. Translation elements of this symmetry group define discrete Painlevé equations with the same number of parameters as their family of surfaces. While non-translation elements of the symmetry group have been observed to correspond to discrete systems of Painlevé-t…
We prove that Fredholm determinants of the form det(1-K_s), where K_s is the restriction of either the discrete Bessel kernel or the discrete {}_2F_1 kernel to {s,s+1,...}, can be expressed through solutions of discrete Painleve II and V equations, respectively. These Fredholm determinants can also be viewed as distribution functions of the first part of the random partitions distributed according to a poissonized Plancherel measure and a z-measure, or as normalized Toeplitz determinants with symbols exp(η(u+1/u)) and (1+u)^z(1+ξ/u)^{z'}. The proofs are based on a general formalism involving d…
In this paper, we consider the discrete power function associated with the sixth Painlevé equation. This function is a special solution of the so-called cross-ratio equation with a similarity constraint. We show in this paper that this system is embedded in a cubic lattice with $\widetilde{W}(3A_1^{(1)})$ symmetry. By constructing the action of $\widetilde{W}(3A_1^{(1)})$ as a subgroup of $\widetilde{W}(D_4^{(1)})$, i.e., the symmetry group of P$_{\rm VI}$, we show how to relate $\widetilde{W}(D_4^{(1)})$ to the symmetry group of the lattice. Moreover, by using translations in $\widetilde{W}(3…
The modern version of conformal matrix model (CMM) describes conformal blocks in the Dijkgraaf-Vafa phase. Therefore it possesses a determinant representation and becomes a Toda chain $τ$-function only after a peculiar Fourier transform in internal dimensions. Moreover, in CMM Hirota equations arise in a peculiar discrete form (when the couplings of CMM are actually Miwa time-variables). Instead, this integrability property is actually independent on the measure in the original hypergeometric integral. To get hypergeometric functions, one needs to pick up a very special $τ$-function satisfying…
We focus on Fuchsian equations with four accessory parameters and three singular points. We see that the Fuchsian equations admit a "degeneration scheme" in some sense, which is expected to give rise to a degeneration scheme of discrete isomodromic deformation equations with four-dimensional phase space. We compute an example of discrete isomonodromic deformation equations of a certain Fuchsian equation.
The well known elliptic discrete Painlevé equation of Sakai is constructed by a standard translation on the $E_8^{(1)}$ lattice, given by nearest neighbor vectors. In this paper, we give a new elliptic discrete Painlevé equation obtained by translations along next-nearest-neighbor vectors. This equation is a generic (8-parameter) version of a 2-parameter elliptic difference equation found by reduction from Adler's partial difference equation, the so-called Q4 equation. We also provide a projective reduction of the well known equation of Sakai.
We propose a new bilinear Hirota equation for $τ$-functions associated with the $E_8$ root lattice, that provides a "lens" generalisation of the $τ$-functions for the elliptic discrete Painlevé equation. Our equations are characterized by a positive integer $r$ in addition to the usual elliptic parameters, and involve a mixture of continuous variables with additional discrete variables, the latter taking values on the $E_8$ root lattice. We construct explicit $W(E_7)$-invariant hypergeometric solutions of this bilinear Hirota equation, which are given in terms of elliptic hypergeometric sum/in…
Discrete Painlevé equations are nonlinear, nonautonomous difference equations of second-order. They have coefficients that are explicit functions of the independent variable $n$ and there are three different types of equations according to whether the coefficient functions are linear, exponential or elliptic functions of $n$. In this paper, we focus on the elliptic type and give a review of the construction of such equations on the $E_8$ lattice. The first such construction was given by Sakai \cite{SakaiH2001:MR1882403}. We focus on recent developments giving rise to more examples of elliptic …
We revisit the enumeration problems of random discrete surfaces (RDS) based on solutions of the discrete equations derived from the matrix models. For RDS made of squares, the recursive coefficients of orthogonal polynomials associated with the quartic matrix model satisfy the discrete type I Painlevé equation. Through the use of generating function techniques, we show that the planar contribution to the free energy is controlled by the Catalan numbers. We also develop a new systematic scheme of calculating higher-genus contributions to the topological expansion of the free energy of matrix mo…
In a recent work difference equations (Laguerre-Freud equations) for the bi-orthogonal polynomials and related quantities corresponding to the weight on the unit circle $ w(z)=\prod^m_{j=1}(z-z_j(t))^{ρ_j} $ were derived. Here it is shown that in the case $ m=3 $ these difference equations, when applied to the calculation of the underlying U(N) average, reduce to a coupled system identifiable with that obtained by Adler and van Moerbeke using methods of the Toeplitz lattice and Virasoro constraints. Moreover it is shown that this coupled system can be reduced to yield the discrete fifth Painlev…
Matrix Szego biorthogonal polynomials for quasi-definite matrices of measures are studied. For matrices of Holder weights a Riemann-Hilbert problem is uniquely solved in terms of the matrix Szego polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is given as an appropriate framework for the discussion of the Szego matrix and the associated Szego recursion relations for the matrix orthogonal polynomials and its Cauchy transforms. Pearson type differential systems characterizing the matrix of weights are studied. These are linear systems of ordinary differential equations which a…
We derive integrable equations starting from autonomous mappings with a general form inspired by the additive systems associated to the affine Weyl group E$_8^{(1)}$. By deautonomisation we obtain two hitherto unknown systems, one of which turns out to be a linearisable one, and we show that both these systems arise from the deautonomisation of a non-QRT mapping. In order to unambiguously prove the integrability of these nonautonomous systems, we introduce a series of Miura transformations which allows us to prove that one of these systems is indeed a discrete Painlevé equation, related to the…
Schlesinger transformations are algebraic transformations of a Fuchsian system that preserve its monodromy representation and act on the characteristic indices of the system by integral shifts. One of the important reasons to study such transformations is the relationship between Schlesinger transformations and discrete Painlevé equations; this is also the main theme behind our work. We derive \emph{discrete Schlesinger evolution equations} describing discrete dynamical systems generated by elementary Schlesinger transformations and give their discrete Hamiltonian description w.r.t.~the standa…
In this paper, we study the Hankel determinant associated with the degenerate Laguerre unitary ensemble. This problem originates from the largest or smallest eigenvalue distribution of the degenerate Laguerre unitary ensemble. We derive the ladder operators and its compatibility condition with respect to a general perturbed weight. By applying the ladder operators to our problem, we obtain two auxiliary quantities $R_n(t)$ and $r_n(t)$ and show that they satisfy the coupled Riccati equations, from which we find that $R_n(t)$ satisfies the Painlevé V equation. Furthermore, we prove that $σ_{n}(…
We present a method to characterize and compute the large N formal asymptotics of regular and critical Hermitian matrix models with general even potentials in the one-cut and two-cut cases. Our analysis is based on a method to solve continuum limits of the discrete string equation which uses the resolvent of the Lax operator of the underlying Toda hierarchy. This method also leads to an explicit formulation, in terms of coupling constants and critical parameters, of the members of the Painlevé I and Painlevé II hierarchies associated with one-cut and two-cut critical models respectively.
