In this study, we consider the asymptotic behaviour of the first discrete Painlev\{e} equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using an asymptotic series expansion, we identify two types of solutions which are pole-free within some sector of the complex plane containing the positive real axis. Using exponential asymptotic techniques, we determine the Stokes Phenomena effects present within these solutions, and hence the regions in which the asymptotic series expression is valid. From a careful analysis of the switching behaviour across Stokes lines, we find that the first type of solution is uniquely defined, while the second type contains two free parameters, and that the region of validity may be extended for appropriate choice of these parameters.
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the second discrete Painlevé equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using asymptotic power series, we find solutions that are asymptotically pole-free within some region of the complex plane. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. We subsequently apply exponential asymptotic techniques to investigate such phenomena, and obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis, we determine t…
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of the first $q$-difference Painlevé equation in the limits $|q|\rightarrow 1$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. Using asymptotic power series, we describe four families of solutions that contain free parameters hidden beyond-all-orders. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. In order to investigate such phenomena we apply exponential asymptotic techniques to obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis…
Resurgent-transseries solutions to Painleve equations may be recursively constructed out of these nonlinear differential-equations -- but require Stokes data to be globally defined over the complex plane. Stokes data explicitly construct connection-formulae which describe the nonlinear Stokes phenomena associated to these solutions, via implementation of Stokes transitions acting on the transseries. Nonlinear resurgent Stokes data lack, however, a first-principle computational approach, hence are hard to determine generically. In the Painleve I and Painleve II contexts, nonlinear Stokes data g…
We show that the Kontsevich integral on $n\times n$ matrices ($n< \infty$) is the isomonodromic tau function associated to a $2\times 2$ Riemann--Hilbert problem. The approach allows us to gain control of the analysis of the convergence as $n\to\infty$. By an appropriate choice of the external source matrix in Kontsevich's integral, we show that the limit produces the isomonodromic tau function of a special tronquée solution of the first Painlevé hierarchy, and we identify the solution in terms of the Stokes' data of the associated linear problem. We also show that there are several tau functi…
For more than a century, the Painlevé I equation has played an important role in both physics and mathematics. Its two-parameter family of solutions was studied in many different ways, yet still leads to new surprises and discoveries. Two popular tools in these studies are the theory of isomonodromic deformation that uses the exact WKB method, and the asymptotic description of transcendents in terms of two-parameter transseries. Combining methods from both schools of thought, and following work by Takei and collaborators, we find complete, two-parameter connection formulae for solutions when t…
We compute all Voros coefficients of the third Painleve equation of the type D6 (in the sense of [OKSO]) and discuss the parametric Stokes phenomena occurring to formal transseries solutions. We derive connection formulas for parametric Stokes phenomena under an assumption for Borel summability of transseries solutions. Furthermore, we also compute the Voros coefficient of the degenerate third Painleve equation of the type D7 in Appendix D.
We consider two special cases of the connection problem for the second Painlevé equation (PII) using the method of uniform asymptotics proposed by Bassom et al.. We give a classification of the real solutions of PII on the negative (positive) real axis with respect to their initial data. By product, a rigorous proof of a property associate with the nonlinear eigenvalue problem of PII on the real axis, recently revealed by Bender and Komijani, is given by deriving the asymptotic behavior of the Stokes multipliers.
We show that a 2-parameter family of $τ$-functions for the first Painlevé equation can be constructed by the discrete Fourier transform of the topological recursion partition function for a family of elliptic curves. We also perform an exact WKB theoretic computation of the Stokes multipliers of associated isomonodromy system assuming certain conjectures.
We consider two Lax systems for the homogeneous Painlevé II equation: one of size $2\times 2$ studied by Flaschka and Newell in the early 1980's, and one of size $4\times 4$ introduced by Delvaux-Kuijlaars-Zhang and Duits-Geudens in the early 2010's. We prove that solutions to the $4\times 4$ system can be derived from those to the $2\times 2$ system via an integral transform, and consequently relate the Stokes multipliers for the two systems. As corollaries we are able to express two kernels for determinantal processes as contour integrals involving the Flaschka-Newell Lax system: the tacnode…
We study Stokes phenomena of the k \times k isomonodromy systems with an arbitrary Poincaré index r, especially which correspond to the fractional-superstring (or parafermionic-string) multi-critical points (\hat p,\hat q)=(1,r-1) in the k-cut two-matrix models. Investigation of this system is important for the purpose of figuring out the non-critical version of M theory which was proposed to be the strong-coupling dual of fractional superstring theory as a two-matrix model with an infinite number of cuts. Surprisingly the multi-cut boundary-condition recursion equations have a universal form …
The sigma form of the Painlev{é} VI equation contains four arbitrary parameters and generically the solutions can be said to be genuinely ``nonlinear'' because they do not satisfy linear differential equations of finite order. However, when there are certain restrictions on the four parameters there exist one parameter families of solutions which do satisfy (Fuchsian) differential equations of finite order. We here study this phenomena of Fuchsian solutions to the Painlev{é} equation with a focus on the particular PVI equation which is satisfied by the diagonal correlation function C(N,N) of t…
The Stokes multipliers in the matrix models are invariants in the string-theory moduli space and related to the D-instanton chemical potentials. They not only represent non-perturbative information but also play an important role in connecting various perturbative string theories in the moduli space. They are a key concept to the non-perturbative completion of string theory and also expected to imply some remnant of strong coupling dynamics in M theory. In this paper, we investigate the non-perturbative completion problem consisting of two constraints on the Stokes multipliers. As the first co…
We address the nonperturbative structure of topological strings and c=1 matrix models, focusing on understanding the nature of instanton effects alongside with exploring their relation to the large-order behavior of the 1/N expansion. We consider the Gaussian, Penner and Chern-Simons matrix models, together with their holographic duals, the c=1 minimal string at self-dual radius and topological string theory on the resolved conifold. We employ Borel analysis to obtain the exact all-loop multi-instanton corrections to the free energies of the aforementioned models, and show that the leading pol…
We study the Borel summation of the Gromov-Witten potential for the resolved conifold. The Stokes phenomena associated to this Borel summation are shown to encode the Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the resolved conifold, having a direct relation to the Riemann-Hilbert problem formulated by T. Bridgeland. There exist distinguished integration contours for which the Borel summation reproduces previous proposals for the non-perturbative topological string partition functions of the resolved conifold. These partition functions are shown to have another asymptotic expansion at strong topological st…
Systems of hydrodynamic type equations derived from the Navier-Stokes equations and the boundary layer equations are considered. A transformation of the Crocco type reducing the equation order for the longitudinal velocity component is described. The issues of nonlinear stability of the obtained solutions are studied. It is found that a specific feature of many solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations is instability. The nonlinear instability of solutions is proved by a new exact method, which may be useful for the analysis of other nonlinear physical models and phenomena.
We study a certain class of supersymmetric (SUSY) observables in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY Chern-Simons (CS) matter theories and investigate how their exact results are related to the perturbative series with respect to coupling constants given by inverse CS levels. We show that the observables have nontrivial resurgent structures by expressing the exact results as a full transseries consisting of perturbative and non-perturbative parts. As real mass parameters are varied, we encounter Stokes phenomena at an infinite number of points, where the perturbative series becomes non-Borel-summable due …
