We consider two special cases of the connection problem for the second Painlevé equation (PII) using the method of uniform asymptotics proposed by Bassom et al.. We give a classification of the real solutions of PII on the negative (positive) real axis with respect to their initial data. By product, a rigorous proof of a property associate with the nonlinear eigenvalue problem of PII on the real axis, recently revealed by Bender and Komijani, is given by deriving the asymptotic behavior of the Stokes multipliers.
In this paper, we derive the connection formula for the higher rank analog of Painlevé VI arising from the isomonodromic deformation theory and the study of Frobenius manifolds.
Leading terms of asymptotic expansions for the general complex solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation as $t\to\imath\infty$ are found. These asymptotics are parameterized by monodromy data of the associated linear ODE. $$ \frac{d}{dλ}Y= \left(\frac t2σ_3 + \frac{A_0}λ+\frac{A_1}{λ-1}\right)Y. $$ The parametrization allows one to derive connection formulas for the asymptotics. We provide numerical verification of the results. Important special cases of the connection formulas are also considered.
We study the dependence of the tau function of Painlevé I equation on the generalized monodromy of the associated linear problem. In particular, we compute connection constants relating the tau function asymptotics on five canonical rays at infinity. The result is expressed in terms of dilogarithms of cluster type coordinates on the space of Stokes data.
We show that the q-Heun equation and its variants appear in the linear q-difference equations associated to some q-Painlevé equations by considering the blow-up associated to their initial-value spaces. We obtain the firstly degenerated Ruijsenaars-van Diejen operator from the linear q-difference equation associated to the q-Painlevé equation of type $E_8$.
The degenerate third Painlevé equation, $u^{\prime \prime} = \frac{(u^{\prime})^{2}}{u} - \frac{u^{\prime}}τ + \frac{1}τ(-8 εu^{2} + 2ab) + \frac{b^{2}}{u}$, where $ε,b \in \mathbb{R}$, and $a \in \mathbb{C}$, and the associated tau-function are studied via the Isomonodromy Deformation Method. Connection formulae for asymptotics of the general as $τ\to \pm 0$ and $\pm i0$ solution and general regular as $τ\to \pm \infty$ and $\pm i \infty$ solution are obtained.
The critical behavior of a three real parameter class of solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation is computed, and parametrized in terms of monodromy data of the associated $2\times 2$ matrix linear Fuchsian system of ODE. The class may contain solutions with poles accumulating at the critical point. The study of this class closes a gap in the description of the transcendents in one to one correspondence with the monodromy data. These transcendents are reviewed in the paper. Some formulas that relate the monodromy data to the critical behaviors of the four real (two complex) parameter class of…
We present a constructive procedure to obtain the critical behavior of Painleve' VI transcendents and solve the connection problem. This procedure yields two and one parameter families of solutions, including trigonometric and logarithmic behaviors, and three classes of solutions with Taylor expansion at a critical point.
As a new application of the method of "uniform asymptotics" proposed by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod, we provide a simpler and more rigorous proof of the connection formulas of some special solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation, which have been established earlier by Andreev and Kitaev.
We apply the uniform asymptotics method proposed by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod to a special Painlevé V equation, and we provide a simpler and more rigorous proof of the connection formulas for a special solution of the equation, which have been established earlier by McCoy and Tang via the isomonodromy and WKB methods.
We find a class of solutions of the sixth Painleve' equation appearing in the theory of WDVV equations. This class covers almost all the monodromy data associated to the equation, except one point in the space of the data. We find the critical behavior close to the critical points in terms of two parameters and solve the connection problem. We also study the critical behavior of Painleve' transcendents in the Elliptic representation.
We present an asymmetric $q$-Painlevé equation. We will derive this using $q$-orthogonal polynomials with respect to generalized Freud weights: their recurrence coefficients will obey this $q$-Painlevé equation (up to a simple transformation). We will show a stable method of computing a special solution which gives the recurrence coefficients. We establish a connection with $α-q-P_V$.
We consider the second Painlevé equation $$ u"(x)=2u^3(x)+xu(x)-α, $$ where $α$ is a nonzero constant. Using the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, we rigorously prove the asymptotics as $x \to \pm \infty$ for both the real and purely imaginary Ablowitz-Segur solutions, as well as the corresponding connection formulas. We also show that the real Ablowitz-Segur solutions have no real poles when $α\in (-1/2, 1/2)$.
Iorgov, Lisovyy, and Teschner established a connection between isomonodromic deformation of linear differential equations and Liouville conformal field theory at $c=1$. In this paper we present a $q$ analog of their construction. We show that the general solution of the $q$-Painlevé VI equation is a ratio of four tau functions, each of which is given by a combinatorial series arising in the AGT correspondence. We also propose conjectural bilinear equations for the tau functions.
The Liénard equation is used in various applications. Therefore, constructing general analytical solutions of this equation is an important problem. Here we study connections between the Liénard equation and some equations from the Painlevé--Gambier classification. We show that with the help of such connections one can construct general analytical solutions of the Liénard equation's subfamilies. In particular, we find three new integrable families of the Liénard equation. We also propose and discuss an approach for finding one--parameter families of closed--form analytical solutions of the Lié…
This is a sequel to papers by the last two authors making the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence and isomonodromy explicit. For the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation, the moduli spaces for connections and for monodromy are explicitly computed. It is proven that the extended Riemann-Hilbert morphism is an isomorphism. As a consequence these equations have the Painlevé property and the Okamoto-Painlevé space is identified with a moduli space of connections. Using MAPLE computations, one obtains formulas for the degenerate fifth Painlevé equation, for the Bäcklund transformations.
In this paper, we show that the family of moduli spaces of $\balpha'$-stable $(\bt, \blambda)$-parabolic $ϕ$-connections of rank 2 over $\BP^1$ with 4-regular singular points and the fixed determinant bundle of degree -1 is isomorphic to the family of Okamoto--Painlevé pairs introduced by Okamoto \cite{O1} and \cite{STT02}. We also discuss about the generalization of our theory to the case where the rank of the connections and genus of the base curve are arbitrary. Defining isomonodromic flows on the family of moduli space of stable parabolic connections via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondences…
We give a survey of the connection between orthogonal polynomials, Toda lattices and related lattices, and Painlevé equations (discrete and continuous).
We exhibit a remarkable connection between sixth equation of Painleve list and infinite families of explicitly uniformizable algebraic curves. Fuchsian equations, congruences for group transformations, differential calculus of functions and differentials on corresponding Riemann surfaces, Abelian integrals, analytic connections (generalizations of Chazy's equations), and other attributes of uniformization can be obtained for these curves. As byproducts of the theory, we establish relations between Picard-Hitchin's curves, hyperelliptic curves, punctured tori, Heun's equations, and the famous d…
We study the analytic properties and the critical behavior of the elliptic representation of solutions of the Painlevé 6 equation. We solve the connection problem for elliptic representation in the generic case and in a non-generic case equivalent to WDVV equations of associativity.
The paper is about a Painlevé III equation and its relation to isomonodromic families of vector bundles on P^1 with meromorphic connections. The purpose of the paper is two-fold: it offers a conceptual language for the geometrical objects underlying Painlevé equations, and it offers new results on a particular Painlevé III equation, which we denote by P_{III}(0,0,4,-4). This is equivalent to the radial sine (or sinh) Gordon equation and, as such, it appears very widely in geometry and physics. Complex multi-valued solutions on C^* are the natural context for most of the paper, but in the last …
We show that there is a full correspondence between the parameters space of the degenerate biconfluent Heun connection (BHC) and that of Painlevé IV that admits special solutions. The BHC degenerates when either the Stokes' data for the irregular singularity at $\infty$ degenerates or the regular singular point at the origin becomes an apparent singularity. We show that if the BHC is written as isomonodromy family of biconfluent Heun equations (BHE), then the BHE degenerates precisely when it admits eigen-solutions of the biconfluent Heun operators, after choosing appropriate accessory paramet…
We show that the fourth order nonlinear ODE which controls the pole dynamics in the general solution of equation $P_I^2$ compatible with the KdV equation exhibits two remarkable properties: 1) it governs the isomonodromy deformations of a $2\times2$ matrix linear ODE with polynomial coefficients, and 2) it does not possesses the Painlevé property. We also study the properties of the Riemann--Hilbert problem associated to this ODE and find its large $t$ asymptotic solution for the physically interesting initial data.
For the Painlevé 6 transcendents, we provide a unitary description of the critical behaviours, the connection formulae, their complete tabulation, and the asymptotic distribution of the poles close to a critical point.
We consider a connection problem of the first Painlevé equation ($\mathrm{P_I}$), trying to connect the local behavior (Laurent series) near poles and the asymptotic behavior as the variable $t$ tends to negative infinity for real $\mathrm{P_I}$ functions. We get a classification of the real $\mathrm{P_I}$ functions in terms of $(p,H)$ so that they behave differently at the negative infinity, where $p$ is the location of a pole and $H$ is the free parameter in the Laurent series. Some limiting-form connection formulas of $\mathrm{P_I}$ functions are obtained for large $H$. Specifically, for th…
In this paper, we give a systematic construction of ten isomonodromic families of connections of rank two on $\mathbb{P}^1$ inducing Painlevé equations. The classification of ten families is given by considering the Riemann-Hilbert morphism from a moduli space of connections with certain type of regular and irregular singularities to a corresponding catetorical moduli space of analytic data (i.e., ordinary monodromy, Stokes matrices and links), which is called the monodromy space. Explicit equations of the monodromy spaces for ten families are calculated. Moreover, we obtain natural explicit f…
We present two complementary methods, each applicable in a different range, to evaluate the distribution of the lowest eigenvalue of random matrices in a Jacobi ensemble. The first method solves an associated Painleve VI nonlinear differential equation numerically, with suitable initial conditions that we determine. The second method proceeds via constructing the power-series expansion of the Painleve VI function. Our results are applied in a forthcoming paper in which we model the distribution of the first zero above the central point of elliptic curve L-function families of finite conductor …
For more than a century, the Painlevé I equation has played an important role in both physics and mathematics. Its two-parameter family of solutions was studied in many different ways, yet still leads to new surprises and discoveries. Two popular tools in these studies are the theory of isomonodromic deformation that uses the exact WKB method, and the asymptotic description of transcendents in terms of two-parameter transseries. Combining methods from both schools of thought, and following work by Takei and collaborators, we find complete, two-parameter connection formulae for solutions when t…
The degenerate third Painleve' equation, $u"(t)=(u'(t))^2/u(t)-u'(t)/t+1/t(-8c u^2(t)+2ab)+b^2/u(t)$, where $c=+/-1$, $b>0$, and $a$ is a complex parameter, is studied via the Isomonodromy Deformation Method. Asymptotics of general regular and singular solutions $u(t)$ as $t -> +/-\infty$ and $t -> +/-i\infty$ are derived and parametrized in terms of the monodromy data of the associated 2X2 linear auxiliary problem introduced in the first part of this work [1]. Using these results, three-real-parameter families of solutions that have infinite sequences of zeroes and poles that are asymptotical…
We consider three special cases of the initial value problem of the first Painlevé equation (PI). Our approach is based on the method of uniform asymptotics introduced by Bassom, Clarkson, Law and McLeod. A rigorous proof of a property of the PI solutions on the negative real axis, recently revealed by Bender and Komijani, is given by approximating the Stokes multipliers. Moreover, we build more precise relation between the large initial data of the PI solutions and their three different types of behavior as the independent variable tends to negative infinity. In addition, some limiting form c…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the generic ($D_6^{(1)}$-type) third Painlevé equation in the space of initial values as the independent variable approaches infinity (or zero) and show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected. Moreover, we prove that any solution with essential singularity at infinity has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and similarly at the origin.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation as the independent variable approaches zero and infinity in the space of initial values. We show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected and, moreover, that any solution with the essential singularity at zero has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and any solution with the essential singularity at infinity has infinite number of poles and takes value $1$ infinitely many times.
The second Painlevé equation with a large parameter ($P_{II}$) is analyzed by using the exact WKB analysis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the problem of the degeneration of $P$-Stokes geometry of ($P_{II}$), which relates to a kind of Stokes phenomena for asymptotic (formal) solutions of ($P_{II}$). We call this Stokes phenomenon a "parametric Stokes phenomenon". We formulate the connection formula for this Stokes phenomenon, and confirm it in two ways: the first one is by computing the "Voros coefficient" of ($P_{II}$), and the second one is by using the isomonodromic deformatio…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of the fourth Pain\-levé equation as the independent variable goes to infinity in its space of (complex) initial values, which is a generalisation of phase space described by Okamoto. We show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected and, moreover, that any non-special solution has an infinite number of poles and infinite number of zeroes.
Resurgent-transseries solutions to Painleve equations may be recursively constructed out of these nonlinear differential-equations -- but require Stokes data to be globally defined over the complex plane. Stokes data explicitly construct connection-formulae which describe the nonlinear Stokes phenomena associated to these solutions, via implementation of Stokes transitions acting on the transseries. Nonlinear resurgent Stokes data lack, however, a first-principle computational approach, hence are hard to determine generically. In the Painleve I and Painleve II contexts, nonlinear Stokes data g…
Formal series solutions and the Kovalevskaya exponents of a quasi-homogeneous polynomial system of differential equations are studied by means of a weighted projective space and dynamical systems theory. A necessary and sufficient condition for the series solution to be a convergent Laurent series is given, which improve the well known Painlevé test. In particular, if a given system has the Painlevé property, an algorithm to construct Okamoto's space of initial conditions is given. The space of initial conditions is obtained by weighted blow-ups of the weighted projective space, where the weig…
We present two examples of reductions from the evolution equations describing discrete Schlesinger transformations of Fuchsian systems to difference Painlevé equations: difference Painlevé equation d-$P\left({A}_{2}^{(1)*}\right)$ with the symmetry group ${E}^{(1)}_{6}$ and difference Painlevé equation d-$P\left({A}_{1}^{(1)*}\right)$ with the symmetry group ${E}^{(1)}_{7}$. In both cases we describe in detail how to compute their Okamoto space of the initial conditions and emphasize the role played by geometry in helping us to understand the structure of the reduction, a choice of a good coor…
We study movable singularities of Garnier systems using the connection of the latter with isomonodromic deformations of Fuchsian systems. Questions on the existence of solutions for some inverse monodromy problems are also considered.
Over the last decade it has become clear that discrete Painlevé equations appear in a wide range of important mathematical and physical problems. Thus, the question of recognizing a given non-autonomous recurrence as a discrete Painlevé equation and determining its type according to Sakai's classification scheme, understanding whether it is equivalent to some known (model) example, and especially finding an explicit change of coordinates transforming it to such an example, becomes one of the central ones. Fortunately, Sakai's geometric theory provides an almost algorithmic procedure for answer…
In this paper we present a general scheme for how to relate differential equations for the recurrence coefficients of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials to the Painlevé equations using the geometric framework of the Okamoto Space of Initial Conditions. We demonstrate this procedure in two examples. For semi-classical Laguerre polynomials appearing in \cite{HC17}, we show how the recurrence coefficients are connected to the fourth Painlevé equation. For discrete orthogonal polynomials associated with the hypergeometric weight appearing in \cite{FVA18} we discuss the relation of the recurrenc…
We consider a family of solutions to the Painlevé II equation $$ u''(x)=2u^3(x)+xu(x)-α\qquad \textrm{with } \a \in \mathbb{R} \cut \{0\}, $$ which have infinitely many poles on $(-\infty, 0)$. Using Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method for Riemann-Hilbert problems, we rigorously derive their singular asymptotics as $x \to -\infty$. In the meantime, we extend the existing asymptotic results when $x\to +\infty$ from $\a-\frac{1}{2} \notin \mathbb{Z}$ to any real $\a$. The connection formulas are also obtained.
In this paper, we present new, unstable solutions, which we call quicksilver solutions, of a $q$-difference Painlevé equation in the limit as the independent variable approaches infinity. The specific equation we consider in this paper is a discrete version of the first Painlevé equation ($q\Pon$), whose phase space (space of initial values) is a rational surface of type $A_7^{(1)}$. We describe four families of almost stationary behaviours, but focus on the most complicated case, which is the vanishing solution. We derive this solution's formal power series expansion, describe the growth of i…
In this paper a comprehensive review is given on the current status of achievements in the geometric aspects of the Painlevé equations, with a particular emphasis on the discrete Painlevé equations. The theory is controlled by the geometry of certain rational surfaces called the spaces of initial values, which are characterized by eight point configuration on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and classified according to the degeration of points. We give a systematic description of the equations and their various properties, such as affine Weyl group symmetries, hypergeomtric solutions and Lax p…

Differential equations with the Painlevé property have been studied extensively due to their appearance in many branches of mathematics and their applicability in physics. Although a modern, differential algebraic treatment of the order one equations appeared before, the connection with the classical theory did not. Using techniques from algebraic geometry we provide the link between the classical and the modern treatment, and with the help of differential Galois theory a new classification is derived, both for characteristic 0 and p.
In this paper we shall use the algebraic method known as supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) to obtain solutions to the Painlevé V (PV) equation, a second-order non-linear ordinary differential equation. For this purpose, we will apply first the SUSY QM treatment to the radial oscillator. In addition, we will revisit the polynomial Heisenberg algebras (PHAs) and we will study the general systems ruled by them: for first-order PHAs we obtain the radial oscillator, while for third-order PHAs the potential will be determined by solutions to the PV equation. This connection allows us to int…
We study dynamics of solutions in the initial value space of the sixth Painlevé equation as the independent variable approaches zero. Our main results describe the repeller set, show that the number of poles and zeroes of general solutions is unbounded, and that the complex limit set of each solution exists and is compact and connected.
We investigate generalizations of the Charlier polynomials on the lattice $\mathbb{N}$, on the shifted lattice $\mathbb{N}+1-β$ and on the bi-lattice $\mathbb{N}\cup (\mathbb{N}+1-β)$. We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for the orthogonal polynomials are related to solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation PV (which can be transformed to the third Painlevé equation). Initial conditions for different lattices can be transformed to the classical solutions of PV with special values of the parameters.
We consider orthogonal polynomials p_n with respect to an exponential weight function w(x) = exp(-P(x)). The related equations for the recurrence coefficients have been explored by many people, starting essentially with Laguerre [49], in order to study special continued fractions, recurrence relations, and various asymptotic expansions (G. Freud's contribution [28, 56]). Most striking example is n = 2tw_n + w_n(w_n+1 + w_n + w_n-1) for the recurrence coefficients p_n+1 = xp_n - w_np_n-1 of the orthogonal polynomials related to the weight w(x) = exp(-4(tx^3 + x^4)) (notation of [26, pp. 34-36])…
The third, fifth and sixth Painlevé equations are studied by means of the weighted projective spaces ${\mathbb C}P^3(p,q,r,s)$ with suitable weights $(p,q,r,s)$ determined by the Newton polyhedrons of the equations. Singular normal forms of the equations, symplectic atlases of the spaces of initial conditions, Riccati solutions and Boutroux's coordinates are systematically studied in a unified way with the aid of the orbifold structure of ${\mathbb C}P^3(p,q,r,s)$ and dynamical systems theory.
