The aim of this paper is to study symmetries of linearly singular differential equations, namely, equations that can not be written in normal form because the derivatives are multiplied by a singular linear operator.
The concept of geometric symmetry of a linearly singular differential equation is introduced as a transformation that preserves the geometric data that define the problem. It is proved that such symmetries are essentially equivalent to dynamic symmetries, that is, transformations mapping solutions into solutions. Similar results are given for infinitesimal symmetries.
To study the invariance of several objects under the flows of vector fields, a careful study of infinitesimal variations is performed, with a special emphasis on infinitesimal vector bundle automorphisms.
In this paper, we extend the well-known Noether theorem for Lagrangian systems to contact Lagrangian systems. We introduce a classification of infinitesimal symmetries and obtain the corresponding dissipated quantities. We notice that in contact dynamics, the existence of infinitesimal symmetries does not produce conserved quantities, but functions that dissipate at the same rate than the energy; so, the corresponding quotients are true conserved quantities.
In this companion paper to our article {\em Accidental CR structures} (arxiv.org, January 2023), thought of as an appendix not submitted for publication, we provide complete explicit lists of infinitesimal CR automorphisms for the concerned CR models having respective Lie algebra structures: $${\bf E}_{II}, \qquad\ {\bf E}_{III}, \qquad\ \mathfrak{so}(\ell-1,\ell+1), \qquad\ \mathfrak{su}(p,q).$$ We start from our lists of {\em quadric} CR submanifolds $M^{2n+c} \subset \mathbb{C}^{n+c}$ of codimension $c >1$ which are shown to be {\em accidental}, in the sense that their CR symmetry groups ar…
Derived brackets as introduced and studied by Kosmann-Schwarzbach and Voronov are a powerful tool for describing and understanding infinitesimal symmetry actions relevant in physics. Roytenberg and Weinstein showed that this continues to hold for the categorified symmetries arising in Hitchin's generalized geometry. After reviewing some well-established examples, we prove that derived brackets also underlie the symmetries of Double Field Theory and heterotic Double Field Theory. This leads to a common framework for large classes of symmetries, which suggests that derived bracket constructions …
Poisson brackets admit infinitesimal symmetries which are encoded using oriented graphs; this construction is due to Kontsevich (1996). We formulate several open problems about combinatorial and topological properties of the graphs involved, about integrability and analytic properties of such symmetry flows (in particular, for known classes of Poisson brackets), and about cohomological, differential geometric, and quantum aspects of the theory. Keywords: Poisson bracket, Jacobi identity, infinitesimal symmetry, affine manifold, Poisson cohomology, graph complex.
We summarize the results of our recent work on Bäcklund transformations (BTs), particularly focusing on the relationship of BTs and infinitesimal symmetries. We present a BT for an associated Degasperis-Procesi (aDP) equation and its superposition principle, and investigate the solutions generated by application of this BT. Following our general methodology, we use the superposition principle of the BT to generate the infinitesimal symmetries of the aDP equation.
We try to convince the reader that the categorical version of differential geometry, called Synthetic Differential Geometry (SDG), offers valuable tools which can be applied to work with some unsolved problems of general relativity. We do this with respect to the space-time singularity problem. The essential difference between the usual differential geometry and SDG is that the latter enriches the real line by introducing infinitesimal of various kinds. Owing to this geometry acquires a tool to penetrate "infinitesimally small" parts of a given manifold. However, to make use of this tool we mu…
Infinitesimal symmetries of a partial differential equation (PDE) can be defined algebraically as the solutions of the linearization (Frechet derivative) equation holding on the space of solutions to the PDE, and they are well-known to comprise a linear space having the structure of a Lie algebra.Solutions of the adjoint linearization equation holding on the space of solutions to the PDE are called adjoint-symmetries. Their algebraic structure for general PDE systems is studied herein. This is motivated by the correspondence between variational symmetries and conservation laws arising from Noe…
In category theory, logic and geometry cooperate with each other producing what is known under the name Synthetic Differential Geometry (SDG). The main difference between SDG and standard differential geometry is that the intuitionistic logic of SDG enforces the existence of infinitesimal objects which essentially modify the local structure of spaces considered in SDG. We focus on an "infinitesimal version" of SDG, an infinitesimal $n$-dimensional formal manifold, and develop differential geometry on it. In particular, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor on infinitesimal level is itself …
An algorithmic method to exploit a general class of infinitesimal symmetries for reducing stochastic differential equations is presented and a natural definition of reconstruction, inspired by the classical reconstruction by quadratures, is proposed. As a side result the well-known solution formula for linear one-dimensional stochastic differential equations is obtained within this symmetry approach. The complete procedure is applied to several examples with both theoretical and applied relevance.
We generalize the differential space concept as a tool for developing differential geometry, and enrich this geometry with infinitesimals that allow us to penetrate into the superfine structure of space. This is achieved by Yoneda embedding a ring of smooth functions into the category of loci. This permits us to define a category of functorial differential spaces. By suitably choosing various algebras as "stages" in this category, one obtains various classes of differential spaces, both known from the literature and many so far unknown. In particular, if one chooses a Weil algebra, infinitesim…
Aiming at enlarging the class of symmetries of an SDE, we introduce a family of stochastic transformations able to change also the underlying probability measure exploiting Girsanov Theorem and we provide new determining equations for the infinitesimal symmetries of the SDE. The well-defined subset of the previous class of measure transformations given by Doob transformations allows us to recover all the Lie point symmetries of the Kolmogorov equation associated with the SDE. This gives the first stochastic interpretation of all the deterministic symmetries of the Kolmogorov equation. The gene…
We introduce a sub-symmetry of a differential system as an infinitesimal transformation of a subset of the system that leaves the subset invariant on the solution set of the entire system. We discuss the geometrical meaning and properties of sub-symmetries, as well as an algorithm for finding sub-symmetries of a system. We show some of the benefits of using sub-symmetries in the search for solutions of a system; in particular , we show how sub-symmetries can be used in decoupling a differential system. We also discuss the role of sub-symmetries in the deformation of known conservation laws of …
The investigation of approximate symmetries of reparametrization invariant Lagrangians of n + 1 degrees of freedom and quadratic velocities is presented. We show that extra conditions emerge which give rise to approximate and conditional Noether symmetries of such constrained actions. The Noether symmetries are the simultaneous conformal Killing vectors of both the kinetic metric and the potential. In order to recover these conditional symmetry generators which would otherwise be lost in gauge fixing the lapse function entering the perturbative Lagrangian, one must consider the lapse among the…
Two essential methods, the symmetry analysis and of the singularity analysis, for the study of the integrability of nonlinear ordinary differential equations are discussed. The main similarities and differences of these two different methods are given.
We apply the theory of infinitesimal transformations for the study of a family of 1+1 fifth-order partial differential equations which have been proposed before for the description of multiple kink solutions. In this analysis we perform a complete classification of the Lie symmetries and of the one-dimensional optimal system. The results are applied for the derivation of similarity solutions and in particular we find travel-wave and scaling solutions. We show that the kink-solution of these equations can be recovered by the use of the Lie symmetries, while new solutions are also derived.
We study a class of nonlinear evolution systems of time fractional partial differential equations using Lie symmetry analysis. We obtain not only infinitesimal symmetries but also a complete group classification and a classification of group invariant solutions of this class of systems. We find that the class of systems of differential equations studied is naturally divided into two cases on the basis of the type of a function that they contain. In each case, the dimension of the Lie algebra generated by the infinitesimal symmetries is greater than 2, and for this reason we present the structu…
We perform a complete study by using the theory of invariant point transformations and the singularity analysis for the generalized Camassa-Holm equation and the generalized Benjamin-Bono-Mahoney equation. From the Lie theory we find that the two equations are invariant under the same three-dimensional Lie algebra which is the same Lie algebra admitted by the Camassa-Holm equation. We determine the one-dimensional optimal system for the admitted Lie symmetries and we perform a complete classification of the similarity solutions for the two equations of our study. The reduced equations are stud…
We describe a novel twistorial construction of the asymptotic BMS symmetries at null infinity for asymptotically flat spacetimes. We define BMS twistors as spinor solutions to some set of components of the usual spacetime twistor equation restricted to null infinity. The space of BMS twistors is infinite-dimensional. We show that given two BMS twistors their symmetric tensor product can be used to generate (complex) vector fields which are the infinitesimal BMS symmetries of null infinity. In this sense BMS twistors are "square roots" of BMS symmetries. We also show that these BMS twistor equa…
