The symmetry properties of a classical N-dimensional harmonic oscillator with rational frequency ratios are studied from a global point of view. A commensurate oscillator possesses the same number of globally defined constants of motion as an isotropic oscillator. In both cases invariant phase-space functions form the algebra su(N) with respect to the Poisson bracket. In the isotropic case, the phase-space flows generated by the invariants can be integrated globally to a set of finite transformations isomorphic to the group SU(N). For a commensurate oscillator, however, the group SU(N) of symmetry transformations is found to exist only on a reduced phase space, due to unavoidable singularities of the flow in the full phase space. It is therefore crucial to distinguish carefully between local and global definitions of symmetry transformations in phase space. This result solves the longstanding problem of which symmetry to associate with a commensurate harmonic oscillator.
The classical quantization of a Lienard-type nonlinear oscillator is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.C. Nucci. Theor. Math. Phys., 168:997--1004, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the correct Schrödinger equation in the momentum space (V. Chithiika Ruby, M. Senthilvelan, and M. Lakshmanan. J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 45:382002, 2012), and sheds light into the apparently remarkable connection with the linear harmonic oscillator.
We present a new exactly solvable (classical and quantum) model that can be interpreted as the generalization to the two-dimensional sphere and to the hyperbolic space of the two-dimensional anisotropic oscillator with any pair of frequencies $ω_x$ and $ω_y$. The new curved Hamiltonian ${H}_κ$ depends on the curvature $κ$ of the underlying space as a deformation/contraction parameter, and the Liouville integrability of ${H}_κ$ relies on its separability in terms of geodesic parallel coordinates, which generalize the Cartesian coordinates of the plane. Moreover, the system is shown to be superi…
Constants of motion, Lagrangians and Hamiltonians admitted by a family of relevant nonlinear oscillators are derived using a geometric formalism. The theory of the Jacobi last multiplier allows us to find Lagrangian descriptions and constants of the motion. An application of the jet bundle formulation of symmetries of differential equations is presented in the second part of the paper. After a short review of the general formalism, the particular case of non-local symmetries is studied in detail by making use of an extended formalism. The theory is related to some results previously obtained b…
The existence of bi-Hamiltonian structures for the rational Harmonic Oscillator (non-central harmonic oscillator with rational ratio of frequencies) is analyzed by making use of the geometric theory of symmetries. We prove that these additional structures are a consequence of the existence of dynamical symmetries of non-symplectic (non-canonical) type. The associated recursion operators are also obtained.
Noether theorem establishes an interesting connection between symmetries of the action integral and conservation laws of a dynamical system. The aim of the present work is to classify the damped harmonic oscillator problem with respect to Noether symmetries and to construct corresponding conservation laws for all over-damped, under damped and critical damped cases. For each case we obtain maximum five linearly independent group generators which provide related five conserved quantities. Remarkably, after obtaining complete set of invariant quantities we obtain analytical solutions for each cas…
We propose a unified description for the constants of motion for superintegrable deformations of the oscillator and Coulomb systems on N-dimensional Euclidean space, sphere and hyperboloid. We also consider the duality between these generalized systems and present some example.
The properties of a system of n = 3 coupled oscillators with linear terms in the velocities (magnetic terms) depending in two parameters are studied. We proved the existence of a bi-Hamiltonian structure arising from a non-symplectic symmetry, as well the existence of master symmetries and additional integrals of motion (weak superintegrability) for certain particular values of the parameters.
We associate with each simple Lie algebra a system of second-order differential equations invariant under a non-compact real form of the corresponding Lie group. In the limit of a contraction to a Schrödinger algebra, these equations reduce to a system of ordinary harmonic oscillators. We provide two clarifying examples of such deformed oscillators: one system invariant under SO(2,3) transformations, and another system featuring $G_{2(2)}$ symmetry. The construction of invariant actions requires adding semi-dynamical degrees of freedom; we illustrate the algorithm with the two examples mention…
The symmetry structure of twodimensional nonlinear isotropic oscillator, introduced in Physica D237 (2008) 505, is discussed. It is shown that it possesses three independent integrals of motion which can be chosen in such a way that they span SU(2), E(2) or SU(1,1) algebras, depending on the value of total energy. They generate the infinitesimal canonical symmetry transformations; integrability of the latter is analyzed. The results are then generalized to the case of arbitrary number of degrees of freedom.
The Dirac equation with both scalar and vector couplings describing the dynamics of a two-dimensional Dirac oscillator in the cosmic string spacetime is considered. We derive the Dirac-Pauli equation and solve it in the limit of the spin and the pseudo-spin symmetries. We analyze the presence of cylindrical symmetric scalar potentials which allows us to provide analytic solutions for the resultant field equation. By using an appropriate ansatz, we find that the radial equation is a biconfluent Heun-like differential equation. The solution of this equation provides us with more than one express…
The second-order differential equation for a damped harmonic oscillator can be converted to two coupled first-order equations, with two two-by-two matrices leading to the group $Sp(2)$. It is shown that this oscillator system contains the essential features of Wigner's little groups dictating the internal space-time symmetries of particles in the Lorentz-covariant world. The little groups are the subgroups of the Lorentz group whose transformations leave the four-momentum of a given particle invariant. It is shown that the damping modes of the oscillator correspond to the little groups for mas…
For the non-conservative Caldirola-Kanai system, describing a quantum damped harmonic oscillator, a couple of constant-of-motion operators generating the Heisenberg-Weyl algebra can be found. The inclusion of the standard time evolution generator (which is not a symmetry) as a symmetry in this algebra, in a unitary manner, requires a non-trivial extension of this basic algebra and hence of the physical system itself. Surprisingly, this extension leads directly to the so-called Bateman dual system, which now includes a new particle acting as an energy reservoir. In addition, the Caldirola-Kanai…
The study of the symmetry of Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator initiated in [Nucl. Phys. B 885 (2014) 150] is continued with special emphasis put on the Hamiltonian formalism. The symmetry generators within the original Pais and Uhlenbeck Hamiltonian approach as well as the canonical transformation to the Ostrogradski Hamiltonian framework are derived. The resulting algebra of generators appears to be the central extension of the one obtained on the Lagrangian level; in particular, in the case of odd frequencies one obtains the centrally extended l-conformal Newton-Hooke algebra. In this important cas…
Liouville (super)integrability of a Hamiltonian system of differential equations is based on the existence of globally well-defined constants of the motion, while Lie point symmetries provide a local approach to conserved integrals. Therefore, it seems natural to investigate in which sense Lie point symmetries can be used to provide information concerning the superintegrability of a given Hamiltonian system. The two-dimensional oscillator and the central force problem are used as benchmark examples to show that the relationship between standard Lie point symmetries and superintegrability is ne…
We give a solution to the long-standing problem of constructing the generators of hidden symmetries of the quantum Higgs oscillator, a particle on a d-sphere moving in a central potential varying as the inverse cosine-squared of the polar angle. This superintegrable system is known to possess a rich algebraic structure, including a hidden SU(d) symmetry that can be deduced from classical conserved quantities and degeneracies of the quantum spectrum. The quantum generators of this SU(d) have not been constructed thus far, except at d=2, and naive quantization of classical conserved quantities l…
A prepotential approach to constructing the quantum systems with dynamical symmetry is proposed. As applications, we derive generalizations of the hydrogen atom and harmonic oscillator, which can be regarded as the systems with position-dependent mass. They have the symmetries which are similar to the corresponding ones, and can be solved by using the algebraic method.
We study the spectrum generating closed nonlinear superconformal algebra that describes $\mathcal{N}=2$ super-extensions of rationally deformed quantum harmonic oscillator and conformal mechanics models with coupling constant $g=m(m+1)$, $m\in {\mathbb N}$. It has a nature of a nonlinear finite $W$ superalgebra being generated by higher derivative integrals, and generally contains several different copies of either deformed superconformal $\mathfrak{osp}(2|2)$ algebra in the case of super-extended rationally deformed conformal mechanics models, or deformed super-Schrodinger algebra in the case…
The symmetry analysis of Ermakov systems is extended to the generalized case where the frequency depends on the dynamical variables besides time. In this extended framework, a whole class of nonlinearly coupled oscillators are viewed as Hamiltonian Ermakov system and exactly solved in closed form.
Non-relativistic conformally invariant systems in a rotating cosmic string (conical) spacetime are analyzed at the classical and quantum levels by means of the gravitoelectromagnetic interpretation of the background. Solutions of the equations of motion are found by employing a local canonical transformation, that leads to their natural interpretation in terms of Riemann surfaces. The cone parameter $α$ and the angular velocity $Ω$ of the background determine the existence of hidden symmetries. Globally defined higher order integrals associated with perihelion of geodesic orbits appear at rati…
Several dynamical symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian are reviewed in a systematic manner and the conditions under which such symmetries hold. These include relativistic spin and orbital angular momentum symmetries, SO(4)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the Dirac Hydrogen atom, SU(3)\times SU_σ(2) symmetry for the relativistic simple harmonic oscillator. The energy spectrum in each case is calculated from group-theoretic considerations.
The classical quantization of the motion of a free particle and that of an harmonic oscillator on a double cone are achieved by a quantization scheme [M.C. Nucci, Theor. Math. Phys. 168 (2011) 994], that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schroedinger equation. The result is different from that given in [K. Kowalski, J.Rembielnski, Ann. Phys. 329 (2013) 146]. A comparison of the different outcomes is provided.
A new integrable generalization to the 2D sphere $S^2$ and to the hyperbolic space $H^2$ of the 2D Euclidean anisotropic oscillator Hamiltonian with Rosochatius (centrifugal) terms is presented, and its curved integral of the motion is shown to be quadratic in the momenta. In order to construct such a new integrable Hamiltonian $H_κ$, we will make use of a group theoretical approach in which the curvature $κ$ of the underlying space will be treated as an additional (contraction) parameter, and we will make extensive use of projective coordinates and their associated phase spaces. It turns out …
We discuss the construction and symmetries of su(3) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients arising from the su(3) basis states constructed as triple tensor products of two-dimensional harmonic oscillator states. Because of the su(2) symmetry of the basis states, matrix elements and recursion relations are easily expressed in terms of su(2) technology. As the Weyl group has a particularly simple action on these states, Weyl symmetries of the su(3) coupling coefficients generalizing the well known m-> -m symmetry of su(2) coupling can be obtained, so that any coefficient can be obtained as a sum of Weyl-re…
We show that parity-time and partial parity-time symmetries are particular cases of antiunitary symmetry. This point is illustrated by means of a recently discussed system of non-Hermitian coupled harmonic oscillators that also exhibits other types of antiunitary symmetries. We also show that a combination of group and perturbation theory is a useful tool for predicting broken antiunitary symmetry.
An exotic rotationally invariant harmonic oscillator (ERIHO) is constructed by applying a non-unitary isotropic conformal bridge transformation (CBT) to a free planar particle. It is described by the isotropic harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian supplemented by a Zeeman type term with a real coupling constant $g$. The model reveals the Euclidean ($|g|<1$) and Minkowskian ($|g|>1$) phases separated by the phases $g=+1$ and $g=-1$ of the Landau problem in the symmetric gauge with opposite orientation of the magnetic field. A hidden symmetry emerges in the system at rational values of $g$. Its genera…
Using the algebraic approach Lie symmetries of time dependent Schroedinger equations for charged particles interacting with superpositions of scalar and vector potentials are classified. Namely, all the inequivalent equations admitting symmetry transformations with respect to continuous groups of transformations are presented. This classification is completed and includes the specification of symmetries and admissible equivalence relations for such equations. In particular, a simple mapping between the free Schroedinger equation and the repulsive oscillator is found which has a clear group-the…
It is demonstrated that the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator in arbitrary dimension enjoys the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry provided frequencies of oscillation form the arithmetic sequence omega_k=(2k-1) omega_1, where k=1,...,n, and l is the half-integer (2n-1)/2. The model is shown to be maximally superintegrable. A link to n decoupled isotropic oscillators is discussed and an interplay between the l-conformal Newton-Hooke symmetry and symmetries characterizing each individual isotropic oscillator is analyzed.
Quantum algebras (also called quantum groups) are deformed versions of the usual Lie algebras, to which they reduce when the deformation parameter q is set equal to unity. From the mathematical point of view they are Hopf algebras. Their use in physics became popular with the introduction of the q-deformed harmonic oscillator as a tool for providing a boson realization of the quantum algebra SUq(2), although similar mathematical structures had already been known. Initially used for solving the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, quantum algebras have subsequently found applications in several branch…
We introduce the notion of the geometrically equivalent quantum systems (GEQS) as quantum systems that lead to the same geometric phases for a given complete set of initial state vectors. We give a characterization of the GEQS. These systems have a common dynamical invariant, and their Hamiltonians and evolution operators are related by symmetry transformations of the invariant. If the invariant is $T$-periodic, the corresponding class of GEQS includes a system with a $T$-periodic Hamiltonian. We apply our general results to study the classes of GEQS that include a system with a cranked Hamilt…
In this paper we follow the Schwinger approach for angular momentum but with the polar basis of harmonic oscillator as a starting point. We derive by a new method two analytic expressions of the elements of passage matrix from the double polar basis to 4- dimensions polar basis of the harmonic oscillator. These expressions are functions of the modules of magnetic moments. The connection between our results and the results derived by the group theory of Laguerre polynomials is found. We determine a new expression for these elements in terms of magnetic moments in the general case. We deduce fro…
The $D$-dimensional Smorodinsky-Winternitz system, proposed some years ago by Evans, is re-examined from an algebraic viewpoint. It is shown to possess a potential algebra, as well as a dynamical potential one, in addition to its known symmetry and dynamical algebras. The first two are obtained in hyperspherical coordinates by introducing $D$ auxiliary continuous variables and by reducing a 2D-dimensional harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian. The su(2D) symmetry and ${\rm w}(2D) \oplus_s {\rm sp}(4D,{\mathbb R})$ dynamical algebras of this Hamiltonian are then transformed into the searched for pote…

By applying methods already discussed in a previous series of papers by the same authors, we construct here classes of integrable quantum systems which correspond to n fully resonant oscillators with nonlinear couplings. The same methods are also applied to a series of nontrivial integral sets of functions, which can be constructed when additional symmetries are present due to the equality of some of the frequencies. Besides, for n=3 and resonance 1:1:2, an exceptional integrable system is obtained, in which integrability is not explicitly connected with this type of symmetry. In this exceptio…
We apply the Lie Theory of continuous groups to investigate the symmetries of the Hu-Paz-Zhang Master Equation which arises in the modelling of the interaction of a harmonic oscillator with a linear passive heat bath of oscillators. We examine the case in which the parameters of the equation are constant.
It is known that two coupled harmonic oscillators can support the symmetry group as rich as O(3,3) which corresponds to the Lorentz group applicable to three space-like and three time-like coordinates. This group contains many subgroups, including O(3), O(3,2), O(2,1) which are already familiar to us. In this report, we discuss the symmetry of O(1,1) which plays pivotal roles in quantum optics and particle physics. For this one-parameter group, a full-fledged group theory is not necessary, and we can start the discussion from the Hamiltonian of the coupled oscillator system. It is shown first …
Searching for a Lagrangian may seem either a trivial endeavour or an impossible task. In this paper we show that the Jacobi last multiplier associated with the Lie symmetries admitted by simple models of classical mechanics produces (too?) many Lagrangians in a simple way. We exemplify the method by such a classic as the simple harmonic oscillator, the harmonic oscillator in disguise [H Goldstein, {\it Classical Mechanics}, 2nd edition (Addison-Wesley, Reading, 1980)] and the damped harmonic oscillator. This is the first paper in a series dedicated to this subject.
