We consider a simple network, where a source and destination node are connected with a line of erasure channels. It is well known that in order to achieve the min-cut capacity, the intermediate nodes are required to process the information. We propose coding schemes for this setting, and discuss each scheme in terms of complexity, delay, achievable rate, memory requirement, and adaptability to unknown channel parameters. We also briefly discuss how these schemes can be extended to more general networks.
In this paper, we propose a new scalar linear coding scheme for the index coding problem called update-based maximum column distance (UMCD) coding scheme. The central idea in each transmission is to code messages such that one of the receivers with the minimum size of side information is instantaneously eliminated from unsatisfied receivers. One main contribution of the paper is to prove that the other satisfied receivers can be identified after each transmission, using a polynomial-time algorithm solving the well-known maximum cardinality matching problem in graph theory. This leads to determ…
This paper simplifies an existing coding scheme for the two-receiver discrete memoryless broadcast channel with complementary receiver side information where there is a passive eavesdropper and individual secrecy is required. The existing coding scheme is simplified in two steps by replacing Wyner secrecy coding with Carleial-Hellman secrecy coding. The resulting simplified scheme is free from redundant message splits and random components. Not least, the simplified scheme retains the existing achievable individual secrecy rate region. Finally, its construction simplicity helps us gain additio…
It was recently observed in [1], that in index coding, learning the coding matrix used by the server can pose privacy concerns: curious clients can extract information about the requests and side information of other clients. One approach to mitigate such concerns is the use of $k$-limited-access schemes [1], that restrict each client to learn only part of the index coding matrix, and in particular, at most $k$ rows. These schemes transform a linear index coding matrix of rank $T$ to an alternate one, such that each client needs to learn at most $k$ of the coding matrix rows to decode its requ…
This paper proposes a novel achievable scheme for the index problem and applies it to the caching problem. Index coding and caching are noiseless broadcast channel problems where receivers have message side information. In the index coding problem the side information sets are fixed, while in the caching problem the side information sets correspond the cache contents, which are under the control of the system designer. The proposed index coding scheme, based on distributed source coding and non-unique decoding,is shown to strictly enlarge the rate region achievable by composite coding. The novel…
Coding schemes for discrete memoryless multicast networks (DM-MN) with rate-limited feedback from the receivers and relays to the transmitter are proposed. The schemes improve over the noisy network coding proposed by Lim et al.. For the single relay channel with relay-transmitter feedback, our coding schemes recover Gabbai and Bross's results, and strictly improve on noisy network coding, distributed decode-forward coding proposed by Lim et al., and all known lower bounds on the achievable rates proposed for the setup without feedback. The coding schemes are based on block-Markov coding, supe…
Coding for distributed computing supports low-latency computation by relieving the burden of straggling workers. While most existing works assume a simple master-worker model, we consider a hierarchical computational structure consisting of groups of workers, motivated by the need to reflect the architectures of real-world distributed computing systems. In this work, we propose a hierarchical coding scheme for this model, as well as analyze its decoding cost and expected computation time. Specifically, we first provide upper and lower bounds on the expected computing time of the proposed schem…
In this paper, we propose novel energy efficient adaptive network coding and modulation schemes for time variant channels. We evaluate such schemes under a realistic channel model for open area environments and Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellites. Compared to non-adaptive network coding and adaptive rate efficient network-coded schemes for time variant channels, we show that our proposed schemes, through physical layer awareness can be designed to transmit only if a target quality of service (QoS) is achieved. As a result, such schemes can provide remarkable energy savings.
In this paper, we consider the problem of secure and reliable communication with uncertain channel state information (CSI) and present a new solution named active secure coding which combines the machine learning methods with the traditional physical layer secure coding scheme. First, we build a detectable wiretap channel model by combining the hidden Markov model with the compound wiretap channel model, in which the varying of channel block CSI is a Markov process and the detected information is a stochastic emission from the current CSI. Next, we present a CSI learning scheme to learn the CS…
This paper devotes to comparison of different coding schemes (various constructions of Polar and LDPC codes, Product codes and BCH codes) for the case when information is transmitted over AWGN channel with quantization with lowest possible complexity and resolution: 1-bit. We examine performance (in terms of Frame-error-rate -- FER) for schemes mentioned above and give some reasoning for results we obtained. Also we give some recommendations for choosing coding schemes for a given code rate and code length.
In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme for symmetric Gaussian interference channels with feedback based on the ideas of time-varying coding schemes. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference. This improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. It is shown theoretically and numerically that our coding scheme can outperform the Kramer code. In addition, the generalized degrees-of-freedom of our proposed coding scheme is equal to the Suh-Tse scheme i…
We study the secure decentralized Pliable Index CODing (PICOD) problem with circular side information sets at the users. The security constraint forbids every user to decode more than one message while a decentralized setting means there is no central transmitter in the system. Compared to the secure but centralized version of the problem, a converse bound from one of our previous works showed a factor of three difference in optimal code length under the constraint of linear encoding. In this paper, we first list the linearly infeasible cases, that is, problems where no linear code can simulta…
Extended variants of the recently introduced spread unary coding are described. These schemes, in which the length of the code word is fixed, allow representation of approximately n^2 numbers for n bits, rather than the n numbers of the standard unary coding. In the first of two proposed schemes the spread increases, whereas in the second scheme the spread remains constant.
In the traditional index coding problem, a server employs coding to send messages to $n$ clients within the same broadcast domain. Each client already has some messages as side information and requests a particular unknown message from the server. All clients learn the coding matrix so that they can decode and retrieve their requested data. Our starting observation is that, learning the coding matrix can pose privacy concerns: it may enable a client to infer information about the requests and side information of other clients. In this paper, we mitigate this privacy concern by allowing each cl…
Visible light communication (VLC) could provide short-range optical wireless communication together with illumination using LED lighting. However, conventional forward error correction (FEC) codes for reliable communication do not have the features for dimming support and flicker mitigation which are required in VLC for the main functionality of lighting. Therefore, auxiliary coding techniques are usually needed, which eventually reduce the coding efficiency and increase the complexity. In this paper, a polar codes-based FEC coding scheme for dimmable VLC is proposed to increase the coding eff…
A general time-varying feedback coding scheme is proposed for $M$-user fully connected symmetric Gaussian interference channels. Based on the analysis of the general coding scheme, we prove a theorem which gives a criterion for designing good time-varying feedback codes for Gaussian interference channels. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference when $M=2$. This capacity improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. In addition, our coding scheme can b…
A joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme based on hybrid digital/analog coding is proposed for the transmission of correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels (DM-TWCs). The scheme utilizes the correlation between the sources in generating channel inputs, thus enabling the users to coordinate their transmission to combat channel noise. The hybrid scheme also subsumes prior coding methods such as rate-one separate source-channel coding and uncoded schemes for two-way lossy transmission, as well as the correlation-preserving coding scheme for (almost) lossless transmission. M…
An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.
Motivated by applications in DNA-based storage, we study explicit encoding and decoding schemes of binary strings satisfying locally balanced constraints, where the $(\ell,δ)$-locally balanced constraint requires that the weight of any consecutive substring of length $\ell$ is between $\frac{\ell}{2}-δ$ and $\frac{\ell}{2}+δ$. In this paper we present coding schemes for the strongly locally balanced constraints and the locally balanced constraints, respectively. Moreover, we introduce an additional result on the linear recurrence formula of the number of binary strings which are $(6,1)$-locall…
In this paper, we propose two novel physical layer aware adaptive network coding and coded modulation schemes for time variant channels. The proposed schemes have been applied to different satellite communications scenarios with different Round Trip Times (RTT). Compared to adaptive network coding, and classical non-adaptive network coding schemes for time variant channels, as benchmarks, the proposed schemes demonstrate that adaptation of packet transmission based on the channel variation and corresponding erasures allows for significant gains in terms of throughput, delay and energy efficien…
Existing fixed-length feedback communication schemes are either specialized to particular channels (Schalkwijk--Kailath, Horstein), or apply to general channels but either have high coding complexity (block feedback schemes) or are difficult to analyze (posterior matching). This paper introduces a new fixed-length feedback coding scheme which achieves the capacity for all discrete memoryless channels, has an error exponent that approaches the sphere packing bound as the rate approaches the capacity, and has $O(n\log n)$ coding complexity. These benefits are achieved by judiciously combining fe…
Information-theoretic work for wiretap channels is mostly based on random coding schemes. Designing practical coding schemes to achieve information-theoretic security is an important problem. By applying the two recently developed techniques for polar codes, we propose a polar coding scheme to achieve the secrecy capacity of the general wiretap channel.
The distributed index coding problem is studied, whereby multiple messages are stored at different servers to be broadcast to receivers with side information. First, the existing composite coding scheme is enhanced for the centralized (single-server) index coding problem, which is then merged with fractional partitioning of servers to yield a new coding scheme for distributed index coding. New outer bounds on the capacity region are also established. For 213 out of 218 non-isomorphic distributed index coding problems with four messages the achievable sum-rate of the proposed distributed compos…
In this paper we design network coding schemes for Differential Chaos Shift Keying (DCSK) modulation. In this work, non-coherent chaos-based communication system is used due to its simplicity and robustness to multipath propagation effects, while dispensing with any channel state information knowledge at the receiver. We propose a relay network using network coding and DCSK, where we first present a Physical layer Network Coding (PNC) scheme with two users, $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$, sharing the same spreading code and bandwidth, while synchronously transmitting their signals to the rela…
The groupcast index coding (GIC) problem is a generalization of the index coding problem, where one packet can be demanded by multiple users. In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme called independent user partition multicast (IUPM) for the GIC problem. The novelty of this scheme compared to the user partition multicast (UPM) (Shanmugam \textit{et al.}, 2015) is in removing redundancies in the UPM solution by eliminating the linearly dependent coded packets. We also prove that the UPM scheme subsumes the packet partition multicast (PPM) scheme (Tehrani \textit{et al.}, 2012). Hence, the …
Existing polar coding schemes for the two-user interference channel follow the original idea of Han and Kobayashi, in which component messages are encoded independently and then mapped by some deterministic functions (i.e., homogeneous superposition coding). In this paper, we propose a new polar coding scheme for the interference channel based on the heterogeneous superposition coding approach of Chong, Motani and Garg. We prove that fully-joint decoding (the receivers simultaneously decode both senders' common messages and the intended sender's private message) in the Han-Kobayashi strategy c…
The secrecy performance of a source-channel model is studied in the context of lossy source compression over a noisy broadcast channel. The source is causally revealed to the eavesdropper during decoding. The fidelity of the transmission to the legitimate receiver and the secrecy performance at the eavesdropper are both measured by a distortion metric. Two achievability schemes using the technique of hybrid coding are analyzed and compared with an operationally separate source-channel coding scheme. A numerical example is provided and the comparison results show that the hybrid coding schemes …
We consider a graphical approach to index coding. While cycles have been shown to provide coding gain, only disjoint cycles and cliques (a specific type of overlapping cycles) have been exploited in existing literature. In this paper, we define a more general form of overlapping cycles, called the interlinked-cycle (IC) structure, that generalizes cycles and cliques. We propose a scheme, called the interlinked-cycle-cover (ICC) scheme, that leverages IC structures in digraphs to construct scalar linear index codes. We characterize a class of infinitely many digraphs where our proposed scheme i…
We consider a cognitive radio network scenario where a primary transmitter and a secondary transmitter, respectively, communicate a message to their respective primary receiver and secondary receiver over a packet-based wireless link, using a joint automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) error control scheme. The secondary transmitter assists in the retransmission of the primary message, which improves the primary performance, and is granted limited access to the transmission resources. Conventional ARQ, as well as two network-coding schemes are investigated for application in the retransmission phase;…
We address the problem of constructing of coding schemes for the channels with high-order modulations. It is known, that non-binary LDPC codes are especially good for such channels and significantly outperform their binary counterparts. Unfortunately, their decoding complexity is still large. In order to reduce the decoding complexity we consider multilevel coding schemes based on non-binary LDPC codes (NB-LDPC-MLC schemes) over smaller fields. The use of such schemes gives us a reasonable gain in complexity. At the same time the performance of NB-LDPC-MLC schemes is practically the same as th…
Differential pulse-code modulation (DPCM) is recently coupled with uniform scalar quantization (SQ) to improve the rate-distortion (RD) performance for the block-based quantized compressive sensing (CS) of images. In this framework, for each block's CS measurements, a prediction is generated based on the reconstructed CS measurements of the previous blocks and subtracted from measurements of the current block in the measurement domain. The resulting residual is then quantized by uniform SQ to generate the quantization index. However, the entropy coding is still required to remove the statistic…
