The paper studies a class of three user Gaussian interference channels. A new layered lattice coding scheme is introduced as a transmission strategy. The use of lattice codes allows for an "alignment" of the interference observed at each receiver. The layered lattice coding is shown to achieve more than one degree of freedom for a class of interference channels and also achieves rates which are better than the rates obtained using the Han-Kobayashi coding scheme.
Subspace codes were introduced by Kötter and Kschischang for error control in random linear network coding. In this paper, a layered type of subspace codes is considered, which can be viewed as a superposition of multiple component subspace codes. Exploiting the layered structure, we develop two decoding algorithms for these codes. The first algorithm operates by separately decoding each component code. The second algorithm is similar to the successive interference cancellation (SIC) algorithm for conventional superposition coding, and further permits an iterative version. We show that both al…
This paper looks into the $K$-user interference channel. Interference Alignment is much likely to be applied with double-layered symbol extensions, either for constant channels in the H$ø$st-Madsen-Nosratinia conjecture or slowly changing channels. In our work, the core idea relies on double-layered symbol extensions to artificially construct equivalent time-variant channels to provide crucial \textit{channel randomness or relativity} required by conventional Cadambe-Jafar scheme in time-variant channels \cite{IA-DOF-Kuser-Interference}.
We propose two coding schemes combining decode-forward (DF) and noisy network coding (NNC) with different flavors. The first is a combined DF-NNC scheme for the one-way relay channel which includes both DF and NNC as special cases by performing rate splitting, partial block Markov encoding and NNC. The second combines two different DF strategies and layered NNC for the two-way relay channel. One DF strategy performs coherent block Markov encoding at the source at the cost of power splitting at the relay, the other performs independent source and relay encoding but with full relay power, and la…
We consider a class of Gaussian layered networks where a source communicates with a destination through $L$ intermediate relay layers with $N$ nodes in each layer in the presence of a single eavesdropper which can overhear the transmissions of the nodes in any one layer. The problem of maximum secrecy rate achievable with analog network coding for a unicast communication over such layered wireless relay networks with directed links is considered. A relay node performing analog network coding scales and forwards the signals received at its input. The key contribution of this work is a lemma tha…
This paper studies a layered erasure interference channel model, which is a simplification of the Gaussian interference channel with fading using the deterministic model approach. In particular, the capacity region of the layered erasure one-sided interference channel is completely determined, assuming that the channel state information (CSI) is known to the receivers, but there is no CSI at transmitters (CSIT). The result holds for arbitrary fading statistics. Previous results of Aggarwal, Sankar, Calderbank and Poor on the capacity region or sum capacity under several interference configurat…
This paper studies a layered erasure model for two-user interference channels, which can be viewed as a simplified version of Gaussian fading interference channel. It is assumed that channel state information~(CSI) is only available at receivers but not at transmitters. Under such assumption, an outer bound is derived for the capacity region of such interference channel. The new outer bound is tight in many circumstances. For the remaining open cases, the outer bound extends previous results.
Due to stringent constraints on resources, it may be infeasible to acquire the current channel state information at the transmitter in energy harvesting communication systems. In this paper, we optimize an energy harvesting transmitter, communicating over a slow fading channel, using layered coding. The transmitter has access to the channel statistics, but does not know the exact channel state. In layered coding, the codewords are first designed for each of the channel states at different rates, and then the codewords are either time-multiplexed or superimposed before the transmission, leading…
The layered interference network is investigated with delayed channel state information (CSI) at all nodes. It is demonstrated how multi-hopping can be utilized to increase the achievable degrees of freedom (DoF). In particular, a multi-phase transmission scheme is proposed for the $K$-user $2K$-hop interference network in order to systematically exploit the layered structure of the network and delayed CSI to achieve DoF values that scale with $K$. This result provides the first example of a network with distributed transmitters and delayed CSI whose DoF scales with the number of users.
Multicasting $K$ independent messages via multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels to multiple users where each user already has a subset of messages as side information is studied. A general framework of constructing layered space-time index coding (LSTIC) from a large class of space-time block codes (STBC), including perfect STBC, is proposed. We analyze the proposed LSTIC and show that it provides minimum determinant gains that are exponential with the amount of information contained in the side information for any possible side information. When constructed over a perfect STBC, the p…
The sum capacity of a class of layered erasure one-sided interference channels is developed under the assumption of no channel state information at the transmitters. Outer bounds are presented for this model and are shown to be tight for the following sub-classes: i) weak, ii) strong (mix of strong but not very strong (SnVS) and very strong (VS)), iii) ergodic very strong (mix of strong and weak), and (iv) a sub-class of mixed interference (mix of SnVS and weak). Each sub-class is uniquely defined by the fading statistics.
This paper studies the problem of transmitting multiple independent layered video streams over single-hop wireless networks using network coding (NC). We combine feedback-free random linear NC (RLNC) with unequal error protection (UEP) and our goal is to investigate the benefits of coding across streams, i.e. inter session NC. To this end, we present a transmission scheme that in addition to mixing packets of different layers of each stream (intra-session NC), mixes packets of different streams as well. Then, we propose the analytical formulation of the layer decoding probabilities for each us…
A polar coding scheme for interference networks is introduced. The scheme combines Arikan's monotone chain rules for multiple-access channels and a method by Hassani and Urbanke to 'align' two incompatible polarization processes. It achieves the Han--Kobayashi inner bound for two-user interference channels and generalizes to interference networks.
We study the $K=3$ user multiple input single output (MISO) broadcast channel (BC) with $M=3$ antennas at the transmitter and $1$ antenna at each receiver, from the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) perspective, under the assumption that the channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is limited to finite precision. In particular, our goal is to identify a parameter regime where a simple layered superposition (SLS) coding scheme achieves the entire GDoF region. With $α_{ij}$ representing the channel strength parameter for the link from the $j^{th}$ antenna of the transmitter to the…
Existing polar coding schemes for the two-user interference channel follow the original idea of Han and Kobayashi, in which component messages are encoded independently and then mapped by some deterministic functions (i.e., homogeneous superposition coding). In this paper, we propose a new polar coding scheme for the interference channel based on the heterogeneous superposition coding approach of Chong, Motani and Garg. We prove that fully-joint decoding (the receivers simultaneously decode both senders' common messages and the intended sender's private message) in the Han-Kobayashi strategy c…
We explore degrees of freedom (DoF) characterizations of partially connected wireless networks, especially cellular networks, with no channel state information at the transmitters. Specifically, we introduce three fundamental elements --- aligned frequency reuse, wireless index coding and interference diversity --- through a series of examples, focusing first on infinite regular arrays, then on finite clusters with arbitrary connectivity and message sets, and finally on heterogeneous settings with asymmetric multiple antenna configurations. Aligned frequency reuse refers to the optimality of o…
This paper considers the problem of network coding for multiple unicast connections in networks represented by directed acyclic graphs. The concept of interference alignment, traditionally used in interference networks, is extended to analyze the performance of linear network coding in this setup and to provide a systematic code design approach. It is shown that, for a broad class of three-source three-destination unicast networks, a rate corresponding to half the individual source-destination min-cut is achievable via alignment strategies.
Recent work has studied the benefits of caching in the interference channel, particularly by placing caches at the transmitters. In this paper, we study the two-user Gaussian interference channel in which caches are placed at both the transmitters and the receivers. We propose a separation strategy that divides the physical and network layers. While a natural separation approach might be to abstract the physical layer into several independent bit pipes at the network layer, we argue that this is inefficient. Instead, the separation approach we propose exposes interacting bit pipes at the netwo…
The problem of maximum rate achievable with analog network coding for a unicast communication over a layered relay network with directed links is considered. A relay node performing analog network coding scales and forwards the signals received at its input. Recently this problem has been considered under certain assumptions on per node scaling factor and received SNR. Previously, we established a result that allows us to characterize the optimal performance of analog network coding in network scenarios beyond those that can be analyzed using the approaches based on such assumptions. The key c…
In this paper, we propose a low-complexity, secrecy capacity achieving polar coding scheme for the cognitive interference channel with confidential messages (CICC) under the strong secrecy criterion. Existing polar coding schemes for interference channels rely on the use of polar codes for the multiple access channel, the code construction problem of which can be complicated. We show that the whole secrecy capacity region of the CICC can be achieved by simple point-to-point polar codes due to the cognitivity, and our proposed scheme requires the minimum rate of randomness at the encoder.
A Han-Kobayashi based achievable scheme is presented for ergodic fading two-user Gaussian interference channels (IFCs) with perfect channel state information at all nodes and Gaussian codebooks with no time-sharing. Using max-min optimization techniques, it is shown that jointly coding across all states performs at least as well as separable coding for the sub-classes of uniformly weak (every sub-channel is weak) and hybrid (mix of strong and weak sub-channels that do not achieve the interference-free sum-capacity) IFCs. For the uniformly weak IFCs, sufficient conditions are obtained for which…
The problem of maximum rate achievable with analog network coding for a unicast communication over a layered wireless relay network with directed links is considered. A relay node performing analog network coding scales and forwards the signals received at its input. Recently this problem has been considered under two assumptions: (A) each relay node scales its received signal to the upper bound of its transmit power constraint, (B) the relay nodes in specific subsets of the network operate in the high-SNR regime. We establish that assumption (A), in general, leads to suboptimal end-to-end rat…
A low-complexity coding scheme is developed to achieve the rate region of maximum likelihood decoding for interference channels. As in the classical rate-splitting multiple access scheme by Grant, Rimoldi, Urbanke, and Whiting, the proposed coding scheme uses superposition of multiple codewords with successive cancellation decoding, which can be implemented using standard point-to-point encoders and decoders. Unlike rate-splitting multiple access, which is not rate-optimal for multiple receivers, the proposed coding scheme transmits codewords over multiple blocks in a staggered manner and reco…
In this paper, we propose a new coding scheme for symmetric Gaussian interference channels with feedback based on the ideas of time-varying coding schemes. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference. This improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. It is shown theoretically and numerically that our coding scheme can outperform the Kramer code. In addition, the generalized degrees-of-freedom of our proposed coding scheme is equal to the Suh-Tse scheme i…
We consider the problem of linear network coding over communication networks, representable by directed acyclic graphs, with multiple groupcast sessions: the network comprises of multiple destination nodes, each desiring messages from multiple sources. We adopt an interference alignment perspective, providing new insights into designing practical network coding schemes as well as the impact of network topology on the complexity of the alignment scheme. In particular, we show that under certain (polynomial-time checkable) constraints on networks with $K$ sources, it is possible to achieve a rat…
This paper investigates the achievability of the interference channel coding. It is clarified that the rate-splitting technique is unnecessary to achieve Han-Kobayashi and Jian-Xin-Garg inner regions. Codes are constructed by using sparse matrices (with logarithmic column degree) and the constrained-random-number generators. By extending the problem, we can establish a possible extension of known inner regions.
In this paper the multicasting of independent parallel Gaussian sources over a binary erasure broadcasted channel is considered. Multiresolution embedded quantizer and layered joint source-channel coding schemes are used in order to serve simultaneously several users at different channel capacities. The convex nature of the rate-distortion function, computed by means of reverse water-filling, allows us to solve relevant convex optimization problems corresponding to different performance criteria. Then, layered joint source-channel codes are constructed based on the concatenation of embedded sc…
This work studies linear interference networks, both wired and wireless, with no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) except a coarse knowledge of the end-to-end one-hop topology of the network that only allows a distinction between weak (zero) and significant (non-zero) channels and no further knowledge of the channel coefficients' realizations. The network capacity (wired) and DoF (wireless) are found to be bounded above by the capacity of an index coding problem for which the antidote graph is the complement of the given interference graph. The problems are shown to be equiv…
In this paper, we deal with the problem of jointly determining the optimal coding strategy and the scheduling decisions when receivers obtain layered data from multiple servers. The layered data is encoded by means of Prioritized Random Linear Coding (PRLC) in order to be resilient to channel loss while respecting the unequal levels of importance in the data, and data blocks are transmitted simultaneously in order to reduce decoding delays and improve the delivery performance. We formulate the optimal coding and scheduling decisions problem in our novel framework with the help of Markov Decisi…
A general time-varying feedback coding scheme is proposed for $M$-user fully connected symmetric Gaussian interference channels. Based on the analysis of the general coding scheme, we prove a theorem which gives a criterion for designing good time-varying feedback codes for Gaussian interference channels. The proposed scheme improves the Suh-Tse and Kramer inner bounds of the channel capacity for the cases of weak and not very strong interference when $M=2$. This capacity improvement is more significant when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is not very high. In addition, our coding scheme can b…
A rateless transmission architecture is developed for communication over Gaussian intersymbol interference channels, based on the concept of super-Nyquist (SNQ) signaling. In such systems, the signaling rate is chosen significantly higher than the Nyquist rate of the system. We show that such signaling, when used in conjunction with good "off-the-shelf" base codes, simple linear redundancy, and minimum mean-square error decision feedback equalization, results in capacity-approaching, low-complexity rateless codes for the time-varying intersymbol-interference channel. Constructions for both sin…
This paper is about deriving lower bounds on the error exponents for the two-user interference channel under the random coding regime for several ensembles. Specifically, we first analyze the standard random coding ensemble, where the codebooks are comprised of independently and identically distributed (i.i.d.) codewords. For this ensemble, we focus on optimum decoding, which is in contrast to other, suboptimal decoding rules that have been used in the literature (e.g., joint typicality decoding, treating interference as noise, etc.). The fact that the interfering signal is a codeword, rather …
Degrees of freedom (DoF) is studied in the downlink of a heterogenous wireless network modeled as a two-layered interference network. The first layer of the interference network is the backhaul layer between macro base stations (MB) and small cell base stations (SB), which is modeled as a Wyner type linear network. The second layer is the transmission layer between SBs and mobile terminals (MTs), which is modeled as a linear Wyner $L_T$ network, i.e., each MT is connected to $L_T+1$ SBs. The SBs are assumed to be half-duplex, thus restricting the per user degrees of freedom (puDoF) in the syst…
In this paper, we study network coding capacity for random wireless networks. Previous work on network coding capacity for wired and wireless networks have focused on the case where the capacities of links in the network are independent. In this paper, we consider a more realistic model, where wireless networks are modeled by random geometric graphs with interference and noise. In this model, the capacities of links are not independent. We consider two scenarios, single source multiple destinations and multiple sources multiple destinations. In the first scenario, employing coupling and martin…
Dirty paper coding (DPC) allows a transmitter to send information to a receiver in the presence of interference that is known (non-causally) to the transmitter. The original version of DPC was derived for the case where the noise and the interference are statistically independent Gaussian random sequences. More recent works extended this approach to the case where the noise and the interference are mutually independent and at least one of them is Gaussian. In this letter we further extend the DPC scheme by relaxing the Gaussian and statistical independence assumptions. We provide lower bounds …
We study opportunistic interference management when there is bursty interference in parallel 2-user linear deterministic interference channels. A degraded message set communication problem is formulated to exploit the burstiness of interference in M subcarriers allocated to each user. We focus on symmetric rate requirements based on the number of interfered subcarriers rather than the exact set of interfered subcarriers. Inner bounds are obtained using erasure coding, signal-scale alignment and Han-Kobayashi coding strategy. Tight outer bounds for a variety of regimes are obtained using the El…
We consider a communication scenario where a source communicates with a destination over a directed layered relay network. Each relay performs analog network coding where it scales and forwards the signals received at its input. In this scenario, we address the question: What portion of the maximum end-to-end achievable rate can be maintained if only a fraction of relay nodes available at each layer are used? We consider, in particular, the Gaussian diamond network (layered network with a single layer of relay nodes) and a class of symmetric layered networks. For these networks we show that ea…
The use of active narrow-band interference (NBI) suppression in direct-sequence spread-spectrum (DS-SS) communications has been extensively studied. In this paper, we address the problem of optimum coding-spreading tradeoff for NBI suppression. With maximum likelihood decoding, we first derive upper bounds on the error probability of coded systems in the presence of a special class of NBI, namely, multi-tone interference with orthogonal signatures. By employing the well-developed bounding techniques, we show there is no advantage in spreading, and hence a low-rate full coding approach is alway…
In this paper, inner and outer bounds on the capacity region of two-user interference channels with two confidential messages have been proposed. By adding secure multiplex coding to the error correction method in [15] which achieves the best achievable capacity region for interference channel up to now, we have shown that the improved secure capacity region compared with [2] now is the whole Han-Kobayashi region. In addition, this construction not only removes the rate loss incurred by adding dummy messages to achieve security, but also change the original weak security condition in [2] to st…
The interference channel with degraded message sets (IC-DMS) refers to a communication model in which two senders attempt to communicate with their respective receivers simultaneously through a common medium, and one of the senders has complete and a priori (non-causal) knowledge about the message being transmitted by the other. A coding scheme that collectively has advantages of cooperative coding, collaborative coding, and dirty paper coding, is developed for such a channel. With resorting to this coding scheme, achievable rate regions of the IC-DMS in both discrete memoryless and Gaussian c…
This paper studies the problem of broadcasting layered video streams over heterogeneous single-hop wireless networks using feedback-free random linear network coding (RLNC). We combine RLNC with unequal error protection (UEP) and our main purpose is twofold. First, to systematically investigate the benefits of UEP+RLNC layered approach in servicing users with different reception capabilities. Second, to study the effect of not using feedback, by comparing feedback-free schemes with idealistic full-feedback schemes. To these ends, we study `expected percentage of decoded frames' as a key conten…
In the present paper, a modification of the Index-less Indexed Flash Codes (ILIFC) for flash memory storage system is presented. Although the ILIFC proposed by Mahdavifar et al. has excellent worst case performance, the ILIFC can be further improved in terms of the average case performance. The proposed scheme, referred to as the {\em layered ILIFC}, is based on the ILIFC. However, the primary focus of the present study is the average case performance. The main feature of the proposed scheme is the use of the layer-based index coding to represent indices of information bits. The layer index co…
A single unicast index coding problem (SUICP) with symmetric neighboring interference (SNI) has equal number of $K$ messages and $K$ receivers, the $k$th receiver $R_{k}$ wanting the $k$th message $x_{k}$ and having the side-information $\mathcal{K}_{k}=(\mathcal{I}_{k} \cup x_{k})^c,$ where ${I}_k= \{x_{k-U},\dots,x_{k-2},x_{k-1}\}\cup\{x_{k+1}, x_{k+2},\dots,x_{k+D}\}$ is the interference with $D$ messages after and $U$ messages before its desired message. Maleki, Cadambe and Jafar obtained the capacity of this symmetric neighboring interference single unicast index coding problem (SNI-SUICP…
The index coding problem is studied from an interference alignment perspective, providing new results as well as new insights into, and generalizations of, previously known results. An equivalence is established between multiple unicast index coding where each message is desired by exactly one receiver, and multiple groupcast index coding where a message can be desired by multiple receivers, which settles the heretofore open question of insufficiency of linear codes for the multiple unicast index coding problem by equivalence with multiple groupcast settings where this question has previously …
This work investigates the general two-user Compound Broadcast Channel (BC) where an encoder wishes to transmit common and private messages to two receivers while being oblivious to two possible channel realizations controlling the communication. The focus is on the characterization of the largest achievable rate region by resorting to more evolved encoding and decoding techniques than the conventional coding for the standard BC. The role of the decoder is first explored, and an achievable rate region is derived based on the principle of "Interference Decoding" (ID) where each receiver decodes…
We study the joint source-channel coding problem of transmitting a discrete-time analog source over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with interference known at transmitter. We consider the case when the source and the interference are correlated. We first derive an outer bound on the achievable distortion and then, we propose two joint source-channel coding schemes. The first scheme is the superposition of the uncoded signal and a digital part which is the concatenation of a Wyner-Ziv encoder and a dirty paper encoder. In the second scheme, the digital part is replaced by the hyb…
The generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) of the symmetric two-user Gaussian interference relay channel (IRC) is studied. While it is known that the relay does not increase the DoF of the IC, this is not known for the more general GDoF. For the characterization of the GDoF, new sum-capacity upper bounds and lower bounds are derived. The lower bounds are obtained by a new scheme, which is based on functional decode-and-forward (FDF). The GDoF is characterized for the regime in which the source-relay link is weaker than the interference link, which constitutes half the overall space of channel p…
This work studies the capacity region of a two-user ergodic interference channel with fading, where only one of the users is subject to interference from the other user, and the channel state information (CSI) is only available at the receivers. A layered erasure model with one-sided interference and with arbitrary fading statistics is studied first, whose capacity region is completely determined as a polygon. Each dominant rate pair can be regarded as the outcome of a trade-off between the rate gain of the interference-free user and the rate loss of the other user due to interference. Using i…
The $K\times 2$ and $2\times K$, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) X channel with constant channel coefficients available at all transmitters and receivers is considered. A new alignment scheme, named \emph{layered interference alignment}, is proposed in which both vector and real interference alignment are exploited, in conjunction with joint processing at receiver sides. Data streams with fractional multiplexing gains are sent in the desired directions to align the interfering signals at receivers. To decode the intended messages at receivers, a joint processing/simultaneous decoding tec…
A transmitter without channel state information (CSI) wishes to send a delay-limited Gaussian source over a slowly fading channel. The source is coded in superimposed layers, with each layer successively refining the description in the previous one. The receiver decodes the layers that are supported by the channel realization and reconstructs the source up to a distortion. In the limit of a continuum of infinite layers, the optimal power distribution that minimizes the expected distortion is given by the solution to a set of linear differential equations in terms of the density of the fading d…
In this paper, we first study a two-user interference channel with generalized feedback. We establish an inner bound on its capacity region. The coding scheme that we employ for the inner bound is based on an appropriate combination of Han-Kobayash rate splitting and compress-and-forward at the senders. Each sender compresses the channel output that is observes using a compression scheme that is à-la Lim et al. noisy network coding and Avestimeher et al. quantize-map-and-forward. Next, we study an injective deterministic model in which the senders obtain output feedback only intermittently. Sp…
In this paper, we study the capacity of the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) linear deterministic interference channel (IC), with possible correlations within/between the channel matrices. The capacity region is characterized in terms of the rank of the channel matrices. It is shown that \emph{linear precoding} with Han-Kobayashi type of rate-splitting, i.e., splitting the information-bearing symbols of each user into common and private parts, is sufficient to achieve all the rate pairs in the derived capacity region. The capacity result is applied to obtain an achievable rate re…
Different polar coding schemes are proposed for the memoryless degraded broadcast channel under different reliability and secrecy requirements: layered decoding and/or layered secrecy. In this setting, the transmitter wishes to send multiple messages to a set of legitimate receivers keeping them masked from a set of eavesdroppers. The layered decoding structure requires receivers with better channel quality to reliably decode more messages, while the layered secrecy structure requires eavesdroppers with worse channel quality to be kept ignorant of more messages. The implementation of the propo…
In order to meet the demands of `Internet above the clouds', we propose a multiple-antenna aided adaptive coding and modulation (ACM) for aeronautical communications. The proposed ACM scheme switches its coding and modulation mode according to the distance between the communicating aircraft, which is readily available with the aid of the airborne radar or the global positioning system. We derive an asymptotic closed-form expression of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) as the number of transmitting antennas tends to infinity, in the presence of realistic co-channel interference…
Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been proposed for next generation networks. In this contribution, we investigate PNC schemes with embedded perfect secrecy by exploiting structured interference in relay networks with two users and a single relay. In a practical scenario where both users employ finite and uniform signal input distributions we propose upper bounds (UBs) on the achievable perfect secrecy rates and make these explicit when PAM modems are used. We then describe two simple, explicit encoders that can achieve perfect secrecy rates close to these UBs with respect to an untrustw…
A coding scheme is proposed for the memoryless Gaussian broadcast channel with correlated noises and feedback. For all noise correlations other than -1, the gap between the sum-rate the scheme achieves and the full-cooperation bound vanishes as the signal-to-noise ratio tends to infinity. When the correlation coefficient is -1, the gains afforded by feedback are unbounded and the prelog is doubled. When the correlation coefficient is +1 we demonstrate a dichotomy: If the noise variances are equal, then feedback is useless, and otherwise, feedback affords unbounded rate gains and doubles the pr…
For a discrete memoryless channel with non-causal state information available only at the encoder, it is well-known that Gelfand-Pinsker coding achieves its capacity. In this paper, we analyze Gelfand-Pinsker coding scheme and capacity to bring out further understandings. We show that Gelfand-Pinsker capacity is equal to the interference-free capacity. Thus the capacity of a channel with non-causal state information available only at the encoder is the same as if the state information is also available at the decoder. Furthermore, the capacity-achieving conditional input distributions in these…
This paper considers the cognitive interference channel (CIC) with two transmitters and two receivers, in which the cognitive transmitter non-causally knows the message and codeword of the primary transmitter. We first introduce a discrete memoryless more capable CIC, which is an extension to the more capable broadcast channel (BC). Using superposition coding, we propose an inner bound and an outer bound on its capacity region. The outer bound is also valid when the primary user is under strong interference. For the Gaussian CIC, this outer bound applies for $|a| \geq 1 $, where $a$ is the gai…
Reminiscent of the parity function in network coding for the butterfly network, it is shown that forwarding an even/odd indicator bit for a scalar quantization of a relay observation recovers 1 bit of information at the two destinations in a noiseless interference channel where interference is treated as noise. Based on this observation, a coding strategy is proposed to improve the rate of both users at the same time using a relay node in an interference channel. In this strategy, the relay observes a linear combination of the two source signals, and broadcasts a common message to the two dest…
