An adaptive joint source-channel coding (JSCC) scheme is presented for transmitting correlated sources over discrete-memoryless two-way channels subject to distortion constraints. The proposed JSCC scheme makes use of the previously transmitted and received channel signals as well as the sources' correlation to facilitate coordination between terminals. It is shown that the adaptive scheme strictly subsumes prior lossy coding methods for two-way simultaneous transmission and yields a new adaptive separate source-channel coding result. Two examples are given to show the scheme's advantages.

We study the moderate-deviations (MD) setting for lossy source coding of stationary memoryless sources. More specifically, we derive fundamental compression limits of source codes whose rates are $R(D) \pm ε_n$, where $R(D)$ is the rate-distortion function and $ε_n$ is a sequence that dominates $\sqrt{1/n}$. We derive an inner bound to the general rate-distortion region of this problem which is a natural extension of the seminal work by Kaspi'85 on the interactive two-terminal source coding problem. I present a method for lossy transform coding of digital audio that uses the Weyl symbol calculus for constructing the encoding and decoding transformation. The method establishes a direct connection between a time-frequency representation of the signal dependent threshold of masked noise and the encode/decode pair. Two forms of rate redundancy are used to analyze the performance, and achievability results of both a pointwise and minimax nature are demonstrated. In this work, a likelihood encoder is studied in the context of lossy source compression. The analysis of the likelihood encoder is based on a soft-covering lemma. It is demonstrated that the use of a likelihood encoder together with the soft-covering lemma gives alternative achievability proofs for classical source coding problems. The case of the rate-distortion function with side information at the decoder (i.e. the Wyner-Ziv problem) is carefully examined and an application of the likelihood encoder to the multi-terminal source coding inner bound (i.e. the Berger-Tung region) is outlined.
