We present an exact analytical model describing a complete gravitational collapse of matter from horizonless initial conditions to black hole formation, tracing the full evolution of the horizon $H(t)$ from its formation at microscopic scales to macroscopic stabilization. The solution reveals two main stages: (i) a dynamical horizon growth, where an apparent horizon $H(t)$ emerges at a critical time $t_b$ until reaching its final size $h=2 M$, demonstrating how trapped surfaces form dynamically in finite time, and (ii) a {naked-}singularity resolution, where an integrable Ricci curvature singularity ($R^μ_ν\sim r^{-2}$) develops at $r=0$, but remains causally hidden by the horizon growth, preserving weak cosmic censorship without exotic matter. The model could offer a framework to study the quantum-to-classical transition ($H(t) \sim \ell_{\rm Planck}$).
We give a detailed description of the constant mean curvature foliations in the Schwarzschild solution; show that the lapse collapses exponentially, and compute the exponent.
An explicit CMC Schwarzschildean line element is derived near the critical point of the foliation, the lapse is shown to decay exponentially, and the coefficient of the exponent is calculated.
We obtain a new self-similar solution to the Einstein's equations in four-dimensions, representing the collapse of a spherically symmetric, minimally coupled, massless, scalar field. Depending on the value of certain parameters, this solution represents the formation of naked singularities and black holes. Since the black holes are identified as the Schwarzschild ones, one may naturally see how these black holes are produced as remnants of the scalar field collapse.
As it is well known, the $0-0$ component of the Schwarzschild space can be obtained by the requirement that the geodesic of slowly moving particles match the Newtonian equation. Given this result, we show here that the remaining components can be obtained by requiring that the inside of a Newtonian ball of dust matched at a free falling radius with the external space determines that space to be Schwarzschild, if no pathologies exist. Also we are able to determine that the constant of integration that appears in the Newtonian Cosmology coincides with the spacial curvature of the FLRW metric.
Given a static Schwarzschild spacetime of ADM mass M, it is well-known that no ingoing causal geodesic starting in the outer domain r>2M will cross the event horizon r=2M in finite Schwarzschild time. In the present paper we show that in gravitational collapse of Vlasov matter this behaviour can be very different. We construct initial data for which a black hole forms and all matter crosses the event horizon as Schwarzschild time goes to infinity, and we show that this is a necessary condition for geodesic completeness of the event horizon. In addition to a careful analysis of the asymptotic b…

We consider the problem of gravitational collapse of a fluid under the effect of a Schwarzschild black hole (e.g. a primordial one) that suddenly forms inside the fluid. We assume the fluid initially be a uniform dust. Starting from this configuration we obtain a class of metrics under some assumptions. We find that the metric we obtain includes the dust collapse as a subcase. After discussing some basic properties of the solution, we discuss the case of dust collapse in more detail. We find that the radial and tangential pressures outside the horizon may take positive or negative values depen…
We study the singularity created in the supercritical collapse of a spherical massless scalar field. We first model the geometry and the scalar field to be homogeneous, and find a generic solution (in terms of a formal series expansion) describing a spacelike singularity which is monotonic, scalar polynomial and strong. We confront the predictions of this analytical model with the pointwise behavior of fully-nonlinear and inhomogeneous numerical simulations, and find full compliance. We also study the phenomenology of the spatial structure of the singularity numerically. At asymptotically late…
We argue that the formation of a Schwarzschild black hole via Datt-Oppenheimer-Snyder type gravitational collapse must be accompanied by a change in topology upon formation of the event horizon which physically separates matter in the interior from that of the exterior. While it is true that collapsing matter crossing the event horizon continues to fall towards the singularity of the Schwarzschild interior, this region does not in fact contain the matter originally responsible for the collapse. Rather, the latter occupies a distinct internal spacetime region with its own independent evolution.…
We present a time-dependent uniform-density interior Schwarzschild solution, an exact solution to the Einstein field equations. Our solution describes the collapse (or the time-reversed expansion) of an object from an infinite radius to an intermediate radius of 9/8 of the Schwarzschild radius, at which time a curvature singularity appears at the origin, and then continues beyond the singularity to a gravastar with radius equal to the Schwarzschild radius.
Approximative analytic solutions of the Dirac equation in the geometry of Schwarzschild black holes are derived obtaining information about the discrete energy levels and the asymptotic behavior of the energy eigenspinors.
In this paper, we explore the interior dynamics of neutral and charged black holes. Scalar collapses in flat, Schwarzschild, and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries are simulated. We examine the dynamics in the vicinities of the central singularity of a Schwarzschild black hole and of the inner horizon of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. In simulating scalar collapses in Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom geometries, Kruskal and Kruskal-like coordinates are used, respectively, with the presence of a scalar field being taken into account. It is found that, besides near the inner horizons of Reissne…
We study the black hole interiors of spacetimes arising from gravitational collapse in the spherically symmetric Einstein-scalar field setting, and we investigate the precise blow-up rates of curvature and mass at the spacelike singularity near timelike infinity. We show in particular that the Kretschmann scalar blows up faster than in the Schwarzschild setting, due to mass inflation. Moreover, the blow-up rate is not constant and converges to the Schwarzschild rate towards timelike infinity and it depends on the precise late-time polynomial behaviour of the scalar field along the event horizo…
Among the coordinates used to construct a conformal compactification of the Schwarzschild spacetime, none of them simultaneously extend smoothly both through an event horizon and beyond null infinity. To construct such coordinates, instead of starting with the Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates we assume direct analytic transformation between Schwarzschild and compactified coordinates and determine their behavior on the event horizon and at null infinity. We then propose an example of such coordinates and illustrate the way they cover the conformally extended Schwarzschild spacetime as well as their …
We consider the spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat Einstein-Vlasov system. We find explicit conditions on the initial data, with ADM mass M, such that the resulting spacetime has the following properties: there is a family of radially outgoing null geodesics where the area radius r along each geodesic is bounded by 2M, the timelike lines $r=c\in [0,2M]$ are incomplete, and for r>2M the metric converges asymptotically to the Schwarzschild metric with mass M. The initial data that we construct guarantee the formation of a black hole in the evolution. We also give examples of such initial…
A time-symmetric Cauchy slice of the extended Schwarzschild spacetime can be evolved into a foliation of the $r>3m/2$-region of the spacetime by maximal surfaces with the requirement that time runs equally fast at both spatial ends of the manifold. This paper studies the behaviour of these slices in the limit as proper time-at-infinity becomes arbitrarily large and gives an analytic expression for the collapse of the lapse.
Formulating a perfect fluid filled spherically symmetric metric utilizing the 3+1 formalism for general relativity, we show that the metric coefficients are completely determined by the mass-energy distribution, and its time rate of change on an initial spacelike hypersurface. Rather than specifying Schwarzschild coordinates for the exterior of the collapsing region, we let the interior dictate the form of the solution in the exterior, and thus both regions are found to be written in one coordinate patch. This not only alleviates the need for complicated matching schemes at the interface, but …
The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in a Schwarzschild--(anti-)de Sitter space--time is presented. The solutions are derived from the Jacobi inversion problem restricted to the set of zeros of the theta function, called the theta divisor. In its final form the solutions can be expressed in terms of derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The different types of the resulting orbits are characterized in terms of the conserved energy and angular momentum as well as the cosmological constant. Using the analytical solution, the question whether the cosmological constant…
The complete set of analytic solutions of the geodesic equation in a Schwarzschild--(anti) de Sitter space--time is presented. The solutions are derived from the Jacobi inversion problem restricted to the theta--divisor. In its final form the solutions can be expressed in terms of derivatives of Kleinian sigma functions. The solutions are completely classified by the structure of the zeros of the characteristic polynomial which depends on the energy, angular momentum, and the cosmological constant.
We extend the work of Oppenheimer & Synder to model the gravitational collapse of a star to a black hole by including quantum mechanical effects. We first derive closed-form solutions for classical paths followed by a particle on the surface of the collapsing star in Schwarzschild and Kruskal coordinates for space-like, time-like and light-like geodesics. We next present an application of these paths to model the collapse of ultra-light dark matter particles, which necessitates incorporating quantum effects. To do so we treat a particle on the surface of the star as a wavepacket and integrate …
We describe a simple family of analytical coordinate systems for the Schwarzschild spacetime. The coordinates penetrate the horizon smoothly and are spatially isotropic. Spatial slices of constant coordinate time $t$ feature a trumpet geometry with an asymptotically cylindrical end inside the horizon at a prescribed areal radius $R_0$ (with $0<R_{0}\leq M$) that serves as the free parameter for the family. The slices also have an asymptotically flat end at spatial infinity. In the limit $R_{0}=0$ the spatial slices lose their trumpet geometry and become flat -- in this limit, our coordinates r…
We study the dynamics near the central singularity in spherically symmetric collapse of a massless scalar field toward Schwarzschild black hole formation. The equations of motion take different simplified forms in the early and late stages of the singularity curve. We report some fine structures of the analytic solutions and universal features for the metric functions and matter near the singularity.
We raise the analytical knowledge of the eccentricity-expansion of the Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift invariant in a Schwarzschild spacetime up to the 9.5th post-Newtonian order (included) for the $e^2$ and $e^4$ contributions, and up to the 4th post-Newtonian order for the higher eccentricity contributions through $e^{20}$. We convert this information into an analytical knowledge of the effective-one-body radial potentials $\bar d(u)$, $ρ(u)$ and $q(u)$ through the 9.5th post-Newtonian order. We find that our analytical results are compatible with current corresponding numerical self-force da…
We study the dynamic collapse driven by a scalar field, when a relativistic observer falls co-moving with the collapse and cross the horizon of a Schwarzschild black-hole (BH), at $t=t_0$. During the collapse the scale of time is considered as variable. Back-reaction effects and gravitational waves produced during the exponential collapse are studied. We demonstrate that back-reaction effects act as the source of gravitational waves emitted during the collapse, and wavelengths of gravitational waves (GW) are in the range: $λ\ll r_s\equiv {e^{-2h_0t_0}\over 2 h_0}$, that is, smaller than the Sc…
We construct an exact solution for the spherical gravitational collapse in a single coordinate patch. To describe the dynamics of collapse, we use a generalized form of the Painlevé-Gullstrand coordinates in the Schwarzschild spacetime. The time coordinate of the form is the proper time of a free-falling observer so that we can describe the collapsing star not only outside but also inside the event horizon in a single coordinate patch. We show the both solutions corresponding to the gravitational collapse from infinity and from a finite radius.
The model is built in which the main global properties of classical and quasi-classical black holes become local. These are the event horizon, "no-hair", temperature and entropy. Our construction is based on the features of a quantum collapse, discovered when studying some quantum black hole models. But our model is purely classical, and this allows to use selfconsistently the Einstein equations and classical (local) thermodynamics and explain in this way the log(3)-puzzle.
How can a Schwarzschild-sized matter system avoid a fate of gravitational collapse? To address this question, we critically reexamine the arguments that led to the "Buchdahl bound", which implies that the minimal size of a stable, compact object must be larger than nine eighths of its own Schwarzschild radius. Following Mazur and Mottola, and in line with other counterexamples to the singularity theorems, we identify large negative radial pressure extending to the gravitational radius as the essential ingredient for evading the Buchdahl bound. Our results are novel although consistent with man…
We investigate the late-time evolution of the Yang-Mills field in the self-gravitating backgrounds: Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström spacetimes. The late-time power-law tails develop in the three asymptotic regions: the future timelike infinity, the future null infinity and the black hole horizon. In these two backgrounds, however, the late-time evolution has quantitative and qualitative differences. In the Schwarzschild black hole background, the late-time tails of the Yang-Mills field are the same as those of the neutral massless scalar field with multipole moment l=1. The late-time evol…
A method is presented which allows for the numerical computation of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field in the region outside the event horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell. This method involves taking the difference between the stress-energy tensor for the in state in the collapsing null shell spacetime and that for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime. The construction of the modes for the in vacuum state and the Unruh state is discussed. Applying the method, the renormalized stress-energy ten…

We study the backwards-in-time stability of the Schwarzschild singularity from a dynamical PDE point of view. More precisely, considering a spacelike hypersurface $Σ_0$ in the interior of the black hole region, tangent to the singular hypersurface $\{r=0\}$ at a single sphere, we study the problem of perturbing the Schwarzschild data on $Σ_0$ and solving the Einstein vacuum equations backwards in time. We obtain a local well-posedness result for small perturbations lying in certain weighted Sobolev spaces. No symmetry assumptions are imposed. The perturbed spacetimes all have a singularity at …
The deep reason why the equations describing axial and polar perturbations of Schwarzschild black holes have the same spectrum is far from trivial. In this article, we revisit the original proof and try to make it clearer. Still focusing on uncharged and non-rotating black holes, we extend the results to spacetimes including a cosmological constant, which have so far mostly been investigated numerically from this perspective.
The propagation of (massless) scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational waves on fixed Schwarzschild background spacetime is described by the general time-dependent Regge-Wheeler equation. We transform this wave equation to usual Schwarzschild, Eddington-Finkelstein, Painleve-Gullstrand and Kruskal-Szekeres coordinates. In the first three cases, but not in the last one, it is possible to separate a harmonic time-dependence. Then the resulting radial equations belong to the class of confluent Heun equations, i.e., we can identify one irregular and two regular singularities. Using the generalize…
In Paper I in this series we constructed evolution equations for the complete gauge-invariant linear perturbations of a time-dependent spherically symmetric perfect fluid spacetime. A key application of this formalism is the interior of a collapsing star. Here we derive boundary conditions at the surface of the star, matching the interior perturbations to the well-known perturbations of the vacuum Schwarzschild spacetime outside the star.
It is shown that the description of collapse given by the classic model of Oppenheimer and Snyder fails to satisfy a crucial matching condition at the surface of the ball. After correcting the model so that the interior and exterior metrics match correctly, it is established that the contraction process stops at the Schwarzschild radius, that there is an accumulation of particles at the surface of the ball, and that in the limit of infinite time lapse the density of particles at the surface becomes infinite. A black hole cannot form. This result confirms the judgements of both Einstein and Edd…
This paper is an extended version of a talk at the conference Constrained Dynamics and Quantum Gravity QG99. It reviews some work on the quantum collapse of the spherically symmetric gravitating thin shell of zero rest mass. Recent results on Kuchař decomposition are applied. The constructed version of quantum mechanics is unitary, although the shell falls under its Schwarzschild radius if its energy is high enough. Rather that a permanent black hole, something like a transient black and white hole pair seems to be created in such a case.
We present an implementation of a ray tracing code in the Schwarzschild metric. We aim at building a numerical code with a correct implementation of both special (aberration, amplification, Doppler) and general (deflection of light, lensing, gravitational redshift) relativistic effects so as to simulate what an observer with arbitrary velocity would see near, or possibly within, the black hole. We also pay some specific attention to perform a satisfactory rendering of stars. Using this code, we then show several unexplored features of the maximal analytical extension of the metric. In particul…
Higher-order photon rings can be expected to be detected in a more detailed image of the black hole found in future observations. These rings are lensed images of the luminous matter surrounding the black hole and are formed by photons that loop around it. In this paper we have succeeded to derive an analytical expression for the shape of the higher-order rings in the form that is most convenient for application: the explicit equation of the curve in polar coordinates. The formula describes the apparent shape of the higher-order image of the circular ring with the given radius around Schwarzsc…
We study spherical scalar collapse toward a black hole formation and examine the asymptotic dynamics near the central singularity of the formed black hole. It is found that, in the vicinity of the singularity, due to the strong backreaction of a scalar field on the geometry, the mass function inflates and the Kretschmann scalar grows faster than in the Schwarzschild geometry. In collapse, the Misner-Sharp mass is a locally conserved quantity, not providing information on the black hole mass that is measured at asymptotically flat regions.
Cosmic strings are topological defects thought to have formed early in the life of the universe. If such objects exist, a study of their interaction with black holes is of interest. The equations of motion of a cosmic string have the form of highly non-linear wave equations. General analytic solutions, except for motion in certain backgrounds such as flat and shockwave spacetimes, remain unknown; consequently, much of the work must be carried out numerically. To do this, an implicit finite difference scheme was developed that involves solving large block tridiagonal systems. This paper discuss…
Following the monodromy technique performed by Motl and Neitzke, we consider the analytic determination of the highly damped (asymptotic) quasi-normal modes of small Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes. We comment the result as compared to the recent numerical data of Konoplya and Zhidenko.
Exact analytic expressions for various characteristics of the hyperbolic-type orbits of a particle in the Schwarzschild geometry are presented. A useful simple approximation formula is given for the case when the deviation from the Newtonian hyperbolic path is very small.
We express Einstein's field equations for a spherically symmetric ball of general fluid such that they are conducive to an initial value problem. We show how the equations reduce to the Vaidya spacetime in a non-null coordinate frame, simply by designating specific equations of state. Furthermore, this reduces to the Schwarzschild spacetime when all matter variables vanish. We then describe the formulation of an initial value problem, whereby a general fluid ball with vacuum exterior is established on an initial spacelike slice. As the system evolves, the fluid ball collapses and emanates null…
Marginally trapped surfaces (MTSs) are commonly used in numerical relativity to locate black holes. For dynamical black holes, it is not known generally if this procedure is sufficiently reliable. Even for Schwarzschild black holes, Wald and Iyer constructed foliations which come arbitrarily close to the singularity but do not contain any MTSs. In this paper, we review the Wald-Iyer construction, discuss some implications for numerical relativity, and generalize to the well known Vaidya spacetime describing spherically symmetric collapse of null dust. In the Vaidya spacetime, we numerically lo…
We obtain an analytical expression for the electromagnetic quasinormal spectrum of the higher-dimensional nearly-extremal Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. The WKB method is used to verify the results, and a comparison with known results from previous works is briefly made as well.
This paper investigates the dynamics of thin-shell in the presence of perfect fluid as well as the scalar field. We formulate the equations of motion using Israel thin-shell formalism by taking the interior and exterior regions of Schwarzschild, Kerr as well as Kerr-Newmann black hole. We find numerical solutions of equations of motion and effective potential to analyze the scalar shell for collapse and expansion. It is found that the rate of collapse and expansion of scalar shell through shell's radius depends on charge and rotation parameters. We conclude that the massive scalar shell leads …
