Following our previous work constraining interacting dark energy (IDE) models, which showed their potential to alleviate the Hubble tension, in this work we investigate the non-linear effects of the IDE scenario favoured by CMB and DESI observations. The implications of IDE for the $S_8$ tension remain unclear, since current weak-lensing and large-scale-structure analyses either exclude highly non-linear scales or model the non-linear regime using prescriptions calibrated within $Λ$CDM. We address this issue by implementing a fully self-consistent IDE pipeline. We perform N-body simulations of the IDE model with a transfer rate $Q=ξ{\cal H}ρ_x$ using a modified implementation of RAMSES. Since the dark matter Euler equation remains unchanged with respect to $Λ$CDM, the interaction can be incorporated through the modified background evolution and an effective time-dependent dark matter particle mass. We find scale-dependent deviations in the quasi-linear and non-linear regimes of the matter power spectrum, together with modifications to the density-field morphology and halo abundance. Our results show that the impact of IDE on quasi-linear and non-linear structure formation cannot be captured by standard $Λ$CDM-calibrated prescriptions, highlighting the importance of model-consistent non-linear modelling for future weak-lensing and large-scale-structure constraints on interacting dark energy cosmologies.
Within the frame of cosmologies where Dark Energy (DE) is a self--interacting scalar field, we allow for a CDM--DE coupling and non--zero neutrino masses, simultaneously. In their 0--0 version, i.e. in the absence of coupling and neutrino mass, these cosmologies provide an excellent fit to WMAP, SNIa and deep galaxy sample spectra, at least as good as \LambdaCDM. When the new degrees of freedom are open, we find that CDM--DE coupling and significant neutrino masses (~0.1eV per νspecies) are at least as likely as the 0--0 option and, in some cases, even statistically favoured. Results are obtai…
An accurate modelling of baryonic feedback effects is required to exploit the full potential of future weak-lensing surveys such as Euclid or LSST. In this second paper in a series of two, we combine Euclid-like mock data of the cosmic shear power spectrum with an eROSITA X-ray mock of the cluster gas fraction to run a combined likelihood analysis including both cosmological and baryonic parameters. Following the first paper of this series, the baryonic effects (based on the baryonic correction model of Schneider et al. 2019) are included in both the tomographic power spectrum and the covarian…
We introduce an emulator approach to predict the non-linear matter power spectrum for broad classes of beyond-$Λ$CDM cosmologies, using only a suite of $Λ$CDM $N$-body simulations. By including a range of suitably modified initial conditions in the simulations, and rescaling the resulting emulator predictions with analytical `halo model reactions', accurate non-linear matter power spectra for general extensions to the standard $Λ$CDM model can be calculated. We optimise the emulator design by substituting the simulation suite with non-linear predictions from the standard {\sc halofit} tool. We…
Interpreting observations of the Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum requires interpolation between a small number of expensive simulations. We present a Gaussian process emulator modelling the 1D flux power spectrum as a function of the amplitude and slope of the small-scale linear matter power spectrum, and the state of the intergalactic medium at the epoch of interest ($2 < z < 4$). This parameterisation enables the prediction of the flux power spectrum in extended cosmological models that are not explicitly included in the training set, eliminating the need to construct bespoke emulators …
We study the evolution of spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe for chaotic and Starobinsky potentials in the framework of modified loop quantum cosmologies. These models result in a non-singular bounce as in loop quantum cosmology, but with far more complex modified Friedmann dynamics with higher order than quadratic terms in energy density. For the kinetic energy dominated bounce, we obtain analytical solutions using different approximations and compare with numerical evolution for various physical variables. The relative error turns out to be less than $0.3\%$ in the b…
The set-up of the initial conditions in cosmological N-body simulations is usually implemented by rescaling the desired low-redshift linear power spectrum to the required starting redshift consistently with the Newtonian evolution of the simulation. The implementation of this practical solution requires more care in the context of massive neutrino cosmologies, mainly because of the non-trivial scale-dependence of the linear growth that characterises these models. In this work we consider a simple two-fluid, Newtonian approximation for cold dark matter and massive neutrinos perturbations that c…
Predicting the spatial distribution of objects as a function of cosmology is an essential ingredient for the exploitation of future galaxy surveys. In this paper we show that a specially-designed suite of gravity-only simulations together with cosmology-rescaling algorithms can provide the clustering of dark matter, haloes, and subhaloes with high precision. Specifically, with only 3 $N$-body simulations we obtain the power spectrum of dark matter at $z=0$ and $z=1$ to better than 3\% precision for essentially all currently viable values of 8 cosmological parameters, including massive neutrino…

The anisotropy of clustering in redshift space provides a direct measure of the growth rate of large scale structure in the Universe. Future galaxy redshift surveys will make high precision measurements of these distortions, and will potentially allow us to distinguish between different scenarios for the accelerating expansion of the Universe. Accurate predictions are needed in order to distinguish between competing cosmological models. We study the distortions in the redshift space power spectrum in $Λ$CDM and quintessence dark energy models, using large volume N-body simulations, and test pr…
In this paper, we introduce a novel class of interacting vacuum models, based on recasting the equation of state originally developed in the context of lattice kinetic theory by Shan \& Chen as the coupling between the vacuum and cold dark matter (CDM). This coupling allows the vacuum to evolve and is nonlinear around a characteristic energy scale $ρ_*$, changing into a linear coupling with a typical power law evolution at scales much lower and much higher than $ρ_*$. Focusing on the simplest sub-class of models where the interaction consists only of an energy exchange and the CDM remains geod…
This study forges new tools to discriminate between dynamical and static dark energy. It provides accurate evolutionary templates of dynamical cosmological parameters and fundamental constants as analytic functions of the scale factor. They are designed to replace the commonly used parameterizations in likelihood calculations with evolutionary templates based on the physics of specific dynamical cosmologies and dark energy potentials. Thus they are termed Cosmology and Potential Specific, CPS, templates. A suite of CPS templates are calculated for a flat quintessence cosmology with a dark ener…
A new formulation for light propagation in geometric optics by means of the Bi-local Geodesic Operators is considered. We develop the BiGONLight Mathematica package, uniquely designed to apply this framework to compute optical observables in Numerical Relativity. Our package can be used for light propagation on a wide range of scales and redshifts and accepts numerical as well as analytical input for the spacetime metric. In this paper we focus on two cosmological observables, the redshift and the angular diameter distance, specializing our analysis to a wall universe modeled within the post-N…
Testing a subset of viable cosmological models beyond General Relativity (GR), with implications for cosmic acceleration and the Dark Energy associated with it, is within the reach of Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and a part of its endeavor. Deviations from GR-w(z)CDM models can manifest in the growth rate of structure and lensing, as well as in screening effects on non-linear scales. We explore the constraining power of small-scale deviations predicted by the f(R) Hu-Sawicki Modified Gravity (MG) candidate, by emulating this model with COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acce…
We consider a new variant of cosmological perturbation theory that has been designed specifically to include non-linear density contrasts on scales 100 Mpc, while still allowing for linear fluctuations on larger scales. This theory is used to derive the relativistic equations of Eulerian hydrodynamics in realistic cosmological scenarios that contain radiation and a cosmological constant, as well as matter that has been allowed to clump into galaxies and clusters of galaxies. These equations can be used to evolve energy densities and velocities in the presences of small-scale non-linear structu…
We implement an adaptation of the COLA approach, a hybrid scheme that combines Lagrangian perturbation theory with an N-body approach, to model non-linear collapse in chameleon and symmetron modified gravity models. Gravitational screening is modeled effectively through the attachment of a suppression factor to the linearized Klein-Gordon equations. The adapted COLA approach is benchmarked, with respect to an N-body code both for the $Λ$CDM scenario and for the modified gravity theories. It is found to perform well in the estimation of the dark matter power spectra, with consistency of 1 % to …
We revisit the degeneracy between massive neutrinos and generalized theories of gravity in the framework of effective field theory of cosmic acceleration. In particular we consider f(R) theories and a class of non-minimally coupled models parametrized via a coupling to gravity which is linear in the scale factor. In the former case, we find a slightly lower degeneracy with respect to what found so far in the literature, due to the fact that we implement exact designer f(R) models and evolve the full linear dynamics of perturbations. As a consequence, our bounds are slightly tighter on the f(R)…

We propose an alternative approach to the construction of fitting functions to the nonlinear matter power spectrum extracted from $N$-body simulations based on the relative matter power spectrum $δ(k,a)$, defined as the fractional deviation in the absolute matter power spectrum produced by a target cosmology away from a reference $Λ$CDM prediction. From the computational perspective, $δ(k,a)$ is fairly insensitive to the specifics of the simulation settings, and numerical convergence at the 1%-level can be readily achieved without the need for huge computing capacity. Furthermore, $δ(k,a)$ exh…
The abundance of dark matter haloes is one of the key probes of the growth of structure and expansion history of the Universe. Theoretical predictions for this quantity usually assume that, when expressed in a certain form, it depends only on the mass variance of the linear density field. However, cosmological simulations have revealed that this assumption breaks, leading to 10-20% systematic effects. In this paper we employ a specially-designed suite of simulations to further investigate this problem. Specifically, we carry out cosmological N-body simulations where we systematically vary grow…

We use present cosmological observations and forecasts of future experiments to illustrate the power of large-scale structure (LSS) surveys in probing dark matter (DM) microphysics and unveiling potential deviations from the standard $Λ$CDM scenario. To quantify this statement, we focus on an extension of $Λ$CDM with DM-neutrino scattering, which leaves a distinctive imprint on the angular and matter power spectra. After finding that future CMB experiments (such as COrE+) will not significantly improve the constraints set by the Planck satellite, we show that the next generation of galaxy clus…
We investigate the evolution of cosmological perturbations in models of dark energy described by a time-like unit normalized vector field specified by a general function $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$, so-called Generalized Einstein-Aether models. First we study the background dynamics of such models via a designer approach in an attempt to model this theory as dark energy. We find that only one specific form of this designer approach matches $Λ$CDM at background order and we also obtain a differential equation which $\mathcal{F}(\mathcal{K})$ must satisfy for general $w$CDM cosmologies. We also p…
This paper introduces Colossus, a public, open-source python package for calculations related to cosmology, the large-scale structure (LSS) of matter in the universe, and the properties of dark matter halos. The code is designed to be fast and easy to use, with a coherent, well-documented user interface. The cosmology module implements Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmologies including curvature, relativistic species, and different dark energy equations of state, and provides fast computations of the linear matter power spectrum, variance, and correlation function. The LSS module is conc…
