Testing a subset of viable cosmological models beyond General Relativity (GR), with implications for cosmic acceleration and the Dark Energy associated with it, is within the reach of Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and a part of its endeavor. Deviations from GR-w(z)CDM models can manifest in the growth rate of structure and lensing, as well as in screening effects on non-linear scales. We explore the constraining power of small-scale deviations predicted by the f(R) Hu-Sawicki Modified Gravity (MG) candidate, by emulating this model with COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) simulations. We present the experimental design, data generation, and interpolation schemes in cosmological parameters and across redshifts for the emulation of the boost in the power spectra due to Modified Gravity effects. Three preliminary applications of the emulator highlight the sensitivity to cosmological parameters, Fisher forecasting and Markov Chain Monte Carlo inference for a fiducial cosmology. This emulator will play an important role for future cosmological analysis handling the formidable amount of data expected from Rubin Observatory LSST.
Interpreting observations of the Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum requires interpolation between a small number of expensive simulations. We present a Gaussian process emulator modelling the 1D flux power spectrum as a function of the amplitude and slope of the small-scale linear matter power spectrum, and the state of the intergalactic medium at the epoch of interest ($2 < z < 4$). This parameterisation enables the prediction of the flux power spectrum in extended cosmological models that are not explicitly included in the training set, eliminating the need to construct bespoke emulators …
We introduce an emulator approach to predict the non-linear matter power spectrum for broad classes of beyond-$Λ$CDM cosmologies, using only a suite of $Λ$CDM $N$-body simulations. By including a range of suitably modified initial conditions in the simulations, and rescaling the resulting emulator predictions with analytical `halo model reactions', accurate non-linear matter power spectra for general extensions to the standard $Λ$CDM model can be calculated. We optimise the emulator design by substituting the simulation suite with non-linear predictions from the standard {\sc halofit} tool. We…
We use the emulation framework CosmoPower to construct and publicly release neural network emulators of cosmological observables, including the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum, distance-redshift relation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) observables, and derived parameters. We train our emulators on Einstein-Boltzmann calculations obtained with high-precision numerical convergence settings, for a wide range of cosmological models including $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM, $Λ$CDM+$N_\mathrm{eff}$, and $Λ$CDM…

We study the clustering properties of dark matter halos in real- and redshift-space in cosmologies with massless and massive neutrinos through a large set of state-of-the-art N-body simulations. We provide quick and easy-to-use prescriptions for the halo bias on linear and mildly non-linear scales, both in real and redshift space, which are valid also for massive neutrinos cosmologies. Finally we present a halo bias emulator,$\textbf{BE-HaPPY}$, calibrated on the N-body simulations, which is fast enough to be used in the standard Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to cosmological inference. For…
We compare and validate COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) simulations against existing emulators in the literature, namely Bacco and Euclid Emulator 2. Our analysis focuses on the non-linear response function, i.e., the ratio between the non-linear dark matter power spectrum in a given cosmology with respect to a pre-defined reference cosmology, which is chosen to be the Euclid Emulator 2 reference cosmology in this paper. We vary three cosmological parameters, the total matter density, the amplitude of the primordial scalar perturbations and the spectral index. By comparing the COLA non…

In this series of papers we present an emulator-based halo model for the non-linear clustering of galaxies in modified gravity cosmologies. In the first paper, we present emulators for the following halo properties: the halo mass function, concentration-mass relation and halo-matter cross-correlation function. The emulators are trained on data extracted from the \textsc{FORGE} and \textsc{BRIDGE} suites of $N$-body simulations, respectively for two modified gravity (MG) theories: $f(R)$ gravity and the DGP model, varying three standard cosmological parameters $Ω_{\mathrm{m0}}, H_0, σ_8$, and o…
Different regularizations of the Hamiltonian constraint in loop quantum cosmology yield modified loop quantum cosmologies, namely mLQC-I and mLQC-II, which lead to qualitatively different Planck scale physics. We perform a comprehensive analysis of resolution of various singularities in these modified loop cosmologies using effective spacetime description and compare with earlier results in standard loop quantum cosmology. We show that the volume remains non-zero and finite in finite time evolution for all considered loop cosmological models. Interestingly, even though expansion scalar and ene…
Accurate predictions for the non-linear matter power spectrum are needed to confront theory with observations in current and near future weak lensing and galaxy clustering surveys. We propose a computationally cheap method to create an emulator for modified gravity models by utilizing existing emulators for $Λ$CDM. Using a suite of $N$-body simulations we construct a fitting function for the enhancement of both the linear and non-linear matter power spectrum in the commonly studied Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model valid for wave-numbers $k \lesssim 5-10\, h\text{Mpc}^{-1}$ and redshifts $z \les…
We study the evolution of spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe for chaotic and Starobinsky potentials in the framework of modified loop quantum cosmologies. These models result in a non-singular bounce as in loop quantum cosmology, but with far more complex modified Friedmann dynamics with higher order than quadratic terms in energy density. For the kinetic energy dominated bounce, we obtain analytical solutions using different approximations and compare with numerical evolution for various physical variables. The relative error turns out to be less than $0.3\%$ in the b…
The observed accelerated expansion of the Universe may be explained by dark energy or the breakdown of general relativity (GR) on cosmological scales. When the latter case, a modified gravity scenario, is considered, it is often assumed that the background evolution is the same as the $Λ$CDM model but the density perturbation evolves differently. In this paper, we investigate more general classes of modified gravity, where both the background and perturbation evolutions are deviated from those in the $Λ$CDM model. We introduce two phase diagrams, $α{\rm-}fσ_8$ and $H{\rm-}fσ_8$ diagrams; $H$ i…
We implement an adaptation of the COLA approach, a hybrid scheme that combines Lagrangian perturbation theory with an N-body approach, to model non-linear collapse in chameleon and symmetron modified gravity models. Gravitational screening is modeled effectively through the attachment of a suppression factor to the linearized Klein-Gordon equations. The adapted COLA approach is benchmarked, with respect to an N-body code both for the $Λ$CDM scenario and for the modified gravity theories. It is found to perform well in the estimation of the dark matter power spectra, with consistency of 1 % to …
If the accelerated expansion of the universe is due to a modification of general relativity at late times, it is likely that the growth of structure on large scales would also display deviations from the standard cosmology. We investigate the statistics of the distribution of galaxy cluster-sized halos as a probe of gravity. We analyze the output of several matched N-body simulations with the same initial conditions and expansion histories but using both DGP and f (R) gravity with various parameters. From each simulation we extract the cluster mass function, power spectrum, and mean pairwise v…
To explain the high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux with energies $\sim PeV$ recently observed by IceCube collaboration and the relic abundance of DM in the Universe, we consider the minimal 4-dimensional operator $\sim y_{αχ}\overline{L_{L_α}}\, H\, χ$. The cosmological background is assumed to evolve according to $f({\cal T})$ cosmology, where ${\cal T}$ is the scalar torsion.
Cyclic universes with bouncing solutions are candidates for solving the big bang initial singularity problem. Here we seek bouncing solutions in a modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, of the type $R+f(G)$, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar, $G$ is the Gauss-Bonnet term, and $f$ some function of it. In finding such a bouncing solution we resort to a technique that reduces the order of the differential equations of the $R+f(G)$ theory to second order equations. As general relativity is a theory whose equations are of second order, this order reduction technique enables one to find solutions which a…
Large sets of matter density simulations are becoming increasingly important in large-scale structure cosmology. Matter power spectra emulators, such as the Euclid Emulator and CosmicEmu, are trained on simulations to correct the non-linear part of the power spectrum. Map-based analyses retrieve additional non-Gaussian information from the density field, whether through human-designed statistics such as peak counts, or via machine learning methods such as convolutional neural networks. The simulations required for these methods are very resource-intensive, both in terms of computing time and s…
An accurate theoretical template of the redshift-space galaxy power spectrum, if applicable out to nonlinear scales, enables us to extract more stringent and robust constraints on cosmological parameters from the measured galaxy clustering. In this work, we develop a simulation-based template, so-called emulator, for the redshift-space power spectrum of dark matter halos. Using the redshift-space halo power spectra measured from the Dark Quest $N$-body simulation suite that covers 101 flat-geometry $w$CDM cosmologies around the Planck $Λ$CDM model, we feed these data into a feed-forward neural…
We present validation tests of emulator-based halo model method for cosmological parameter inference, assuming hypothetical measurements of the projected correlation function of galaxies, $w_{\rm p}(R)$, and the galaxy-galaxy weak lensing, $Δ\!Σ(R)$, from the spectroscopic SDSS galaxies and the Hyper Suprime-Cam Year1 (HSC-Y1) galaxies. To do this, we use \textsc{Dark Emulator} developed in Nishimichi et al. based on an ensemble of $N$-body simulations, which is an emulation package enabling a fast, accurate computation of halo clustering quantities for flat-geometry $w$CDM cosmologies. Adopti…
It has long been known that the covariant formulation of quantum electrodynamics conflicts with the local description of states in the charged sector. Some of the solutions to this problem amount to modifications of the subsidiary conditions below some arbitrarily low photon frequency. Such infrared modified theories have been shown to be equivalent to standard Maxwell electrodynamics with an additional classical electromagnetic current induced by the quantum charges. The induced current only has support for very small frequencies and cancels the effects of the physical charges on large scales…

Adopting Noether point symmetries, we classify and integrate dynamical systems coming from Horndeski cosmologies. The method is particularly effective both to select the form of Horndeski models and to derive exact cosmological solutions. Starting from the Lagrangians selected by the Noether symmetries, it is possible to derive several modified theories of gravity like $f(R)$ gravity, Brans-Dicke gravity, string inspired gravity and so on. In any case, exact solutions are found out.
In this paper, we first provide a brief review of the effective dynamics of two recently well-studied models of modified loop quantum cosmologies (mLQCs), which arise from different regularizations of the Hamiltonian constraint and show the robustness of a generic resolution of the big bang singularity, replaced by a quantum bounce due to non-perturbative Planck scale effects. As in loop quantum cosmology (LQC), in these modified models the slow-roll inflation happens generically. We consider the cosmological perturbations following the dressed and hybrid approaches and clarify some subtle iss…
One of the main objectives of stage IV galaxy surveys is to constrain gravity on cosmological scales. To this end, it is crucial to make accurate theoretical predictions in the nonlinear regime of structure formation in order to maximise the scientific return. This is possible at a relatively low computational cost thanks to COLA simulations, an approximate and much faster alternative to full $N$-body simulations. In this thesis, we focus on two modified gravity theories, $f(R)$ and nDGP, and present an analysis of how COLA simulations can be combined with empirical models for the galaxy-halo …
Cosmological scalar perturbation theory studied in the Newtonian gauge depends on two potentials $Φ$ and $Ψ$. In General Relativity (GR) they must coincide ($Φ=Ψ$) in the absence of anisotropic stresses sourced by the energy momentum tensor. On the other hand, it is widely accepted in the literature that potential deviations from GR can be parameterized by $Φ\neq Ψ$. The latter feature is therefore present in both GR cosmologies equipped with shear viscous fluids or modified gravity. We study the evolution of scalar matter density perturbations using the redshift-space-distortion based $f(z)σ_…
The spatial curvature ($Ω_K$) of the Universe is one of the most fundamental quantities that could give a link to the early universe physics. In this paper we develop an approximate method to compute the nonlinear matter power spectrum, $P(k)$, for "non-flat" $Λ$CDM models using the separate universe (SU) ansatz which states that the effect of the curvature on structure formation is equivalent to that of long-wavelength density fluctuation ($δ_{\rm b}$) in a local volume in the "flat" $Λ$CDM model, via the specific mapping between the background cosmological parameters and redshifts in the non…
On August 17, 2017 the LIGO interferometers detected the gravitational wave (GW) signal (GW170817) from the coalescence of binary neutron stars. This signal was also simultaneously seen throughout the electromagnetic (EM) spectrum from radio waves to gamma-rays. We point out that this simultaneous detection of GW and EM signals rules out a class of modified gravity theories, termed ``dark matter emulators,'' which dispense with the need for dark matter by making ordinary matter couple to a different metric from that of GW. We discuss other kinds of modified gravity theories which dispense with…
The gravitino problem is investigated in the framework of Extended Gravity cosmologies. In particular, we consider $f(R)$ gravity, the most natural extension of the Hilbert-Einstein action, and $f(\cal T)$ gravity, the extension of teleparallel equivalent gravity. Since in these theories the expansion laws of the Universe are modified, as compared to the standard $Λ$CDM cosmology, it follows that also the thermal history of particles gets modified. We show that $f(R)$ models allow to avoid the late abundance of gravitinos. In particular, we found that for an appropriate choice of the parameter…
In this work we extend the perturbation theory for modified gravity (MG) in two main aspects. First, the construction of matter overdensities from Lagrangian displacement fields is shown to hold in a general framework, allowing us to find Standard Perturbation Theory (SPT) kernels from known Lagrangian Perturbation Theory (LPT) kernels. We then develop a theory of biased tracers for generalized cosmologies, extending already existing formalisms for $Λ$CDM. We present the correlation function in Convolution-LPT and the power spectrum in SPT for $Λ$CDM, $f(R)$ Hu-Sawicky, and DGP braneworld mode…

Cosmological observables show a dependence with the neutrino mass, which is partially degenerate with parameters of extended models of gravity. We study and explore this degeneracy in Horndeski generalized scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Using forecasted cosmic microwave background and galaxy power spectrum datasets, we find that a single parameter in the linear regime of the effective theory dominates the correlation with the total neutrino mass. For any given mass, a particular value of this parameter approximately cancels the power suppression due to the neutrino mass at a given redshift…
We present a convolutional neural network to classify distinct cosmological scenarios based on the statistically similar weak-lensing maps they generate. Modified gravity (MG) models that include massive neutrinos can mimic the standard concordance model ($Λ$CDM) in terms of Gaussian weak-lensing observables. An inability to distinguish viable models that are based on different physics potentially limits a deeper understanding of the fundamental nature of cosmic acceleration. For a fixed redshift of sources, we demonstrate that a machine learning network trained on simulated convergence maps c…
