Interpreting observations of the Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum requires interpolation between a small number of expensive simulations. We present a Gaussian process emulator modelling the 1D flux power spectrum as a function of the amplitude and slope of the small-scale linear matter power spectrum, and the state of the intergalactic medium at the epoch of interest ($2 < z < 4$). This parameterisation enables the prediction of the flux power spectrum in extended cosmological models that are not explicitly included in the training set, eliminating the need to construct bespoke emulators for a number of extensions to $Λ$CDM. Our emulator is appropriate for cosmologies in which the linear matter power spectrum is described to percent level accuracy by just an amplitude and slope across the epoch of interest, and in the regime probed by eBOSS/DESI data. We demonstrate this for massive neutrino cosmologies, where the emulator is able to predict the flux power spectrum in a $Σm_ν=0.3$ eV neutrino cosmology to sub-percent accuracy, without including massive neutrinos in the training simulations. Further parameters would be required to describe models with sharp features in the linear power, such as warm or light axion dark matter. This work will facilitate the combination of upcoming DESI data with observations of the cosmic microwave background, to obtain constraints on neutrino mass and other extensions to $Λ$CDM cosmology.
In this work we extend our recently developed multi-fidelity emulation technique to the simulated Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum. Multi-fidelity emulation allows interpolation of simulation outputs between cosmological parameters using many cheap low-fidelity simulations and a few expensive high-fidelity simulations. Using a test suite of small box (30 Mpc/h) simulations, we show that multi-fidelity emulation is able to reproduce the Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum well, achieving an average accuracy when compared to a test suite of $0.8\%$. We further show that it has a substantial…
We introduce an emulator approach to predict the non-linear matter power spectrum for broad classes of beyond-$Λ$CDM cosmologies, using only a suite of $Λ$CDM $N$-body simulations. By including a range of suitably modified initial conditions in the simulations, and rescaling the resulting emulator predictions with analytical `halo model reactions', accurate non-linear matter power spectra for general extensions to the standard $Λ$CDM model can be calculated. We optimise the emulator design by substituting the simulation suite with non-linear predictions from the standard {\sc halofit} tool. We…
We present methods for interpolating between the 1-D flux power spectrum of the Lyman-$α$ forest, as output by cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. Interpolation is necessary for cosmological parameter estimation due to the limited number of simulations possible. We construct an emulator for the Lyman-$α$ forest flux power spectrum from $21$ small simulations using Latin hypercube sampling and Gaussian process interpolation. We show that this emulator has a typical accuracy of 1.5% and a worst-case accuracy of 4%, which compares well to the current statistical error of 3 - 5% at $z < 3$ from…
We use the emulation framework CosmoPower to construct and publicly release neural network emulators of cosmological observables, including the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and polarization power spectra, matter power spectrum, distance-redshift relation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and redshift-space distortion (RSD) observables, and derived parameters. We train our emulators on Einstein-Boltzmann calculations obtained with high-precision numerical convergence settings, for a wide range of cosmological models including $Λ$CDM, $w$CDM, $Λ$CDM+$N_\mathrm{eff}$, and $Λ$CDM…

Testing a subset of viable cosmological models beyond General Relativity (GR), with implications for cosmic acceleration and the Dark Energy associated with it, is within the reach of Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and a part of its endeavor. Deviations from GR-w(z)CDM models can manifest in the growth rate of structure and lensing, as well as in screening effects on non-linear scales. We explore the constraining power of small-scale deviations predicted by the f(R) Hu-Sawicki Modified Gravity (MG) candidate, by emulating this model with COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acce…
We study the clustering properties of dark matter halos in real- and redshift-space in cosmologies with massless and massive neutrinos through a large set of state-of-the-art N-body simulations. We provide quick and easy-to-use prescriptions for the halo bias on linear and mildly non-linear scales, both in real and redshift space, which are valid also for massive neutrinos cosmologies. Finally we present a halo bias emulator,$\textbf{BE-HaPPY}$, calibrated on the N-body simulations, which is fast enough to be used in the standard Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to cosmological inference. For…
We compare and validate COLA (COmoving Lagrangian Acceleration) simulations against existing emulators in the literature, namely Bacco and Euclid Emulator 2. Our analysis focuses on the non-linear response function, i.e., the ratio between the non-linear dark matter power spectrum in a given cosmology with respect to a pre-defined reference cosmology, which is chosen to be the Euclid Emulator 2 reference cosmology in this paper. We vary three cosmological parameters, the total matter density, the amplitude of the primordial scalar perturbations and the spectral index. By comparing the COLA non…
The Lyman-alpha forest provides strong constraints on both cosmological parameters and intergalactic medium astrophysics, which are forecast to improve further with the next generation of surveys including eBOSS and DESI. As is generic in cosmological inference, extracting this information requires a likelihood to be computed throughout a high-dimensional parameter space. Evaluating the likelihood requires a robust and accurate mapping between the parameters and observables, in this case the 1D flux power spectrum. Cosmological simulations enable such a mapping, but due to computational time c…
Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) represents an alternative and intriguing description of the standard Cold Dark Matter (CDM) fluid, able to explain the lack of direct detection of dark matter particles in the GeV sector and to alleviate small scales tensions in the cosmic large-scale structure formation. Cosmological simulations of FDM models in the literature were performed either with very expensive high-resolution grid-based simulations of individual haloes or through N-body simulations encompassing larger cosmic volumes but resorting on significant approximations in the FDM non-linear dynamics to r…

We present a general framework for obtaining robust bounds on the nature of dark matter using cosmological $N$-body simulations and Lyman-alpha forest data. We construct an emulator of hydrodynamical simulations, which is a flexible, accurate and computationally-efficient model for predicting the response of the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum to different dark matter models, the state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and the primordial power spectrum. The emulator combines a flexible parameterization for the small-scale suppression in the matter power spectrum arising in "non-cold" da…
We present an analysis of high-resolution hydrodynamical N-body simulations of coupled dark energy cosmologies which focusses on the statistical properties of the transmitted Lyman-alpha flux in the high-redshift intergalactic medium (IGM). In these models the growth of the diffuse cosmic web differs from the standard LCDM case: the density distribution is skewed towards underdense regions and the matter power spectra are typically larger (in a scale dependent way). These differences are also appreciable in the Lyman-alpha flux and are larger than 5% (10%) at z=2-4 in the flux probability dist…
Large sets of matter density simulations are becoming increasingly important in large-scale structure cosmology. Matter power spectra emulators, such as the Euclid Emulator and CosmicEmu, are trained on simulations to correct the non-linear part of the power spectrum. Map-based analyses retrieve additional non-Gaussian information from the density field, whether through human-designed statistics such as peak counts, or via machine learning methods such as convolutional neural networks. The simulations required for these methods are very resource-intensive, both in terms of computing time and s…
An accurate theoretical template of the redshift-space galaxy power spectrum, if applicable out to nonlinear scales, enables us to extract more stringent and robust constraints on cosmological parameters from the measured galaxy clustering. In this work, we develop a simulation-based template, so-called emulator, for the redshift-space power spectrum of dark matter halos. Using the redshift-space halo power spectra measured from the Dark Quest $N$-body simulation suite that covers 101 flat-geometry $w$CDM cosmologies around the Planck $Λ$CDM model, we feed these data into a feed-forward neural…
The spatial curvature ($Ω_K$) of the Universe is one of the most fundamental quantities that could give a link to the early universe physics. In this paper we develop an approximate method to compute the nonlinear matter power spectrum, $P(k)$, for "non-flat" $Λ$CDM models using the separate universe (SU) ansatz which states that the effect of the curvature on structure formation is equivalent to that of long-wavelength density fluctuation ($δ_{\rm b}$) in a local volume in the "flat" $Λ$CDM model, via the specific mapping between the background cosmological parameters and redshifts in the non…

Many of the most exciting questions in astrophysics and cosmology, including the majority of observational probes of dark energy, rely on an understanding of the nonlinear regime of structure formation. In order to fully exploit the information available from this regime and to extract cosmological constraints, accurate theoretical predictions are needed. Currently such predictions can only be obtained from costly, precision numerical simulations. This paper is the third in a series aimed at constructing an accurate calibration of the nonlinear mass power spectrum on Mpc scales for a wide rang…
We present a new bound on the ultra-light axion (ULA) dark matter mass $m_\text{a}$, using the Lyman-alpha forest to look for suppressed cosmic structure growth: a 95% lower limit $m_\text{a} > 2 \times 10^{-20}\,\text{eV}$. This strongly disfavors ($> 99.7\%$ credibility) the canonical ULA with $10^{-22}\,\text{eV} < m_\text{a} < 10^{-21}\,\text{eV}$, motivated by the string axiverse and solutions to possible tensions in the cold dark matter model. We strengthen previous equivalent bounds by about an order of magnitude. We demonstrate the robustness of our results using an optimized emulator …

Standard full-shape clustering analyses in Fourier space rely on a fixed power spectrum template, defined at the fiducial cosmology used to convert redshifts into distances, and compress the cosmological information into the Alcock-Paczynski parameters and the linear growth rate of structure. In this paper, we propose an analysis method that operates directly in the cosmology parameter space and varies the power spectrum template accordingly at each tested point. Predictions for the power spectrum multipoles from the TNS model are computed at different cosmologies in the framework of $Λ\rm{CDM…

We investigate the non-linear evolution of the matter power spectrum by using a large set of high-resolution N-body/hydrodynamic simulations. The linear matter power in the initial conditions is consistently modified to accommodate warm dark matter particles which induce a small scale cut-off in the power as compared to standard cold dark matter scenarios. The impact of such thermal relics is addressed at small scales with k > 1 h/Mpc and at z < 5, which are particularly important for the next generation of Lyman-alpha forest, weak lensing and galaxy clustering surveys. We quantify the mass an…
Taking advantage of the unprecedented statistical power of upcoming cosmic shear surveys will require exquisite knowledge of the matter power spectrum over a wide range of scales. Analytical methods can achieve such precision only up to quasi-linear scales. For smaller non-linear scales we must resort to $N$-body and hydrodynamical simulations, which despite recent technological advances and improved algorithms remain computationally expensive. Over the past decade machine learning and the advent of emulators have propelled our ability to hit the target accuracy with impressive computing effic…

We use the observed amount of subhaloes and line-of-sight dark matter haloes in a sample of 11 gravitational lens systems from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey to constrain the free-streaming properties of the dark matter particles. In particular, we combine the detection of a small-mass dark matter halo by Vegetti et al. 2010 with the non-detections by Vegetti et al. 2014 and compare the derived subhalo and halo mass functions with expectations from cold dark matter (CDM) and resonantly produced sterile neutrino models. We constrain the half-mode mass, i.e. the mass scale at which the linear matter …
Modern sky surveys are returning precision measurements of cosmological statistics such as weak lensing shear correlations, the distribution of galaxies, and cluster abundance. To fully exploit these observations, theorists must provide predictions that are at least as accurate as the measurements, as well as robust estimates of systematic errors that are inherent to the modeling process. In the nonlinear regime of structure formation, this challenge can only be overcome by developing a large-scale, multi-physics simulation capability covering a range of cosmological models and astrophysical p…
In the context of forthcoming galaxy surveys, to ensure unbiased constraints on cosmology and gravity when using non-linear structure information, percent-level accuracy is required when modelling the power spectrum. This calls for frameworks that can accurately capture the relevant physical effects, while allowing for deviations from $Λ$CDM. Massive neutrino and baryonic physics are two of the most relevant such effects. We present an integration of the halo model reaction frameworks for massive neutrinos and beyond-$Λ$CDM cosmologies. The integrated halo model reaction, combined with a pseud…
We investigate the claim that the largest subhaloes in high resolution dissipationless cold dark matter (CDM) simulations of the Milky Way are dynamically inconsistent with observations of its most luminous satellites. We find that the inconsistency is largely attributable to the large values of σ_8 and n_s adopted in the discrepant simulations producing satellites that form too early and therefore are too dense. We find the tension between observations and simulations adopting parameters consistent with WMAP9 is greatly diminished making the satellites a sensitive test of CDM. We find the Via…

We have investigated a recently proposed halo-based model, Camelus, for predicting weak-lensing peak counts, and compared its results over a collection of 162 cosmologies with those from N-body simulations. While counts from both models agree for peaks with $\mathcal{S/N}>1$ (where $\mathcal{S/N}$ is the ratio of the peak height to the r.m.s. shape noise), we find $\approx 50\%$ fewer counts for peaks near $\mathcal{S/N}=0$ and significantly higher counts in the negative $\mathcal{S/N}$ tail. Adding shape noise reduces the differences to within $20\%$ for all cosmologies. We also found larger …

We present an analysis of high-resolution N-body simulations of decaying dark matter cosmologies focusing on the statistical properties of the transmitted Lyman-alpha forest flux in the high-redshift intergalactic medium. In this type of model a dark matter particle decays into a slightly less massive stable dark matter daughter particle and a comparably light particle. The small mass splitting provides a non-relativistic kick velocity V_k to the daughter particle resulting in free-streaming and subsequent damping of small-scale density fluctuations. Current Lyman-alpha forest power spectrum m…

We provide an accurate comparison, against large cosmological $N$-body simulations, of different prescriptions for modelling nonlinear matter power spectra in the presence of massive neutrinos and dynamical dark energy. We test the current most widely used approaches: fitting functions (HALOFIT and HMcode), the halo-model reaction (ReACT) and emulators (baccoemu and EuclidEmulator2). Focussing on redshifts $z\leq2$ and scales $k\lesssim 1 \ h/$Mpc (where the simulation mass resolution provides $\sim 1\%$ accuracy), we find that HMcode and ReACT considerably improve over the HALOFIT prescriptio…
