The Lorentzian IIB matrix model provides a non-perturbative framework for emergent spacetime from matrix degrees of freedom. We study whether algebraic consistency constrains such structures by imposing restricted off-shell supersymmetry closure, modulo gauge transformations and explicitly identified trivial symmetries, on a CPT-even low-order effective-action ansatz with anisotropic background fields, without imposing their equations of motion.
The zeroth-order Ward identity forces the scalar ansatz to be constant. At order two, retaining distinct macroscopic and internal transformation normalizations leads to a closure-compatible block-diagonal branch. On the nontrivial internal branch, Clifford-algebra identities force the internal non-Abelian flux to vanish.
In four dimensions, a distinct dual-flux remainder can be absorbed into a Lorentz-type rotation when the macroscopic matrices form a non-degenerate coordinate sector. Within a linear absorption ansatz, the rank-three coefficient tensor is the Hodge dual of a vector. Macroscopic spatial isotropy selects its timelike orientation, yielding a $κ$-Minkowski-like algebra. Finite-dimensional Hermitian representations make the spatial sector trivial, so a nontrivial realization requires an infinite-dimensional limit with unbounded coordinate operators. The different weights of the spatial and internal generators under the adjoint action of $B_0$ are purely algebraic and are not interpreted as physical time evolution or dynamical compactification.
Supersymmetric Minkowski vacua in IIB orientifold compactifications based on orbifolds with background fluxes and non-perturbative superpotentials are investigated. Especially, microscopic requirements and difficulties to obtain such vacua are discussed. We show that orbifold models with one and two complex structure moduli and supersymmetric 2-form flux can be successfully stabilized to such vacua. By taking additional gaugino condensation on fixed space-time filling D3-branes into account also models without complex structure can be consistently stabilized to Minkowski vacua.
We classify $\mathcal N = 2$ Minkowski$_4$ solutions of IIB supergravity with an $SU(2)_R$ symmetry geometrically realized by an $S^2$-foliation in the remaining six dimensions. For the various cases of the classification, we reduce the supersymmetric system of equations to PDEs. These cases often accommodate systems of intersecting branes and half-maximally supersymmetric AdS$_{5,6,7}$ solutions when they exist. As an example, we analyze the AdS$_6$ case in more detail, reducing the supersymmetry equations to a single cylindrical Laplace equation. We also recover an already known linear dilat…
The type IIB matrix model was proposed as a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory in 1996. We simulate a model that describes the late time behavior of the IIB matrix model by applying the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We clarify the relationship between the Euclidean and the Lorentzian versions of the type IIB matrix model in a recently discovered phase. By introducing a constraint, we obtain a model where the spacetime metric is Euclidean at early times, whereas it {\it dynamically} becomes Lorentzian at late times.
The type IIB matrix model has been investigated as a possible nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, it was found by Monte Carlo simulation of the Lorentzian version that the 9-dimensional rotational symmetry of the spatial matrices is broken spontaneously to the 3-dimensional one after some "critical time". In this paper we develop a new simulation method based on the effective theory for the submatrices corresponding to the late time. Using this method, one can obtain the results for $N\times N$ matrices by simulating matrices typically of the size $O(\sqrt{N})$. W…
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. However, it was found recently that a Euclidean space-time appears in the conventional large-$N$ limit. In this work, we add a Lorentz invariant mass term to the original model and consider a limit, in which the coefficient of the mass term vanishes at large $N$. By performing complex Langevin simulations to overcome the sign problem, we observe the emergence of expanding space-time with the Lorentzian signature.
We show that a generalised reduction of D=10 IIB supergravity leads, in a certain limit, to a maximally extended SO(2) gauged supergravity in D=9. We show the scalar potential of this model allows both Minkowski and a new type of domain wall solution to the Bogomol'nyi equations. We relate these vacua to type IIB D-branes.
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. In previous studies, Monte Carlo calculations provided interesting results indicating the spontaneous breaking of SO(9) to SO(3) and the emergence of (3+1)-dimensional space-time. However, an approximation was used to avoid the sign problem, which seemed to make the space-time structure singular. In this talk, we report our results obtained by using the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem instead of using this approximation. In particular, we discuss the emer…
We propose a new method for studying the early universe in the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model, which is considered to be a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. This method is based on the idea of renormalization group, and it enables us to study the time-evolution of the universe for much longer time than in the previous work, which showed that the SO(9) rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken down to SO(3) after a "critical time". We demonstrate how this method works in a simplified model, which is expected to capture the behaviors of the original model when the …
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model has been studied as a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, the emergence of (3+1)D expanding space-time was observed by Monte Carlo studies of this model. It has been found recently, however, that the matrix configurations generated by the simulation is singular in that the submatrices representing the expanding 3D space have only two large eigenvalues associated with the Pauli matrices. This problem has been attributed to the approximation used to avoid the sign problem in simulating the model. Here we…
The type IIB matrix model is a conjectured nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recent studies on the Lorentzian version of the model have shown that only three out of nine spatial directions start to expand after some critical time. On the other hand, due to the unbounded action of the Lorentzian model, one has to introduce infrared (IR) cutoffs in order to make the partition function finite. In this work we investigate whether the effects of the IR cutoffs disappear in the infinite volume limit. For that purpose, we study a simplified model with large matrix size up to $N=256$ …
The type IIB matrix model is a conjectured nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recently the Lorentzian version of the model has been studied by Monte Carlo simulation, and it has been shown that only three out of nine spatial directions start to expand after a critical time. We extend this work by investigating the expanding behavior for much longer time. We find that the 3d space expands exponentially for some period of time, which may be interpreted as inflation. We also simulate a simplified model, which is expected to capture some qualitative features of the original model a…
On the Type IIB toroidal T^6 orientifolds with generic flux compactifications, we conjecture that in generic supsersymmetric Minkowski vacua, at least one of the flux contributions to the seven-brane and D3-brane tadpoles is positive if the moduli are stabilized properly, and then the tadpole cancellation conditions can not be relaxed. To study the supsersymmetric Minkowski flux vacua, we simplify the fluxes reasonably and discuss the corresponding superpotential. We show that we can not have simultaneously the positive real parts of all the moduli and the negative/zero flux contributions to a…
The type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. As such, it is expected to explain the origin of space--time and matter at the same time. This has been partially demonstrated by the previous Monte Carlo studies on the Lorentzian version of the model, which suggested the emergence of (3+1)-dimensional expanding space--time. Here we investigate the same model by solving numerically the classical equation of motion, which is expected to be valid at late times since the action becomes large due to the expansion of space. Many solutions ar…

Recent studies on the Lorentzian version of the type IIB matrix model show that (3+1)D expanding universe emerges dynamically from (9+1)D space-time predicted by superstring theory. Here we study a bosonic matrix model obtained by omitting the fermionic matrices. With the adopted simplification and the usage of a large-scale parallel computer, we are able to perform Monte Carlo calculations with matrix size up to $N=512$, which is twenty times larger than that used previously for the studies of the original model. When the matrix size is larger than some critical value $N_{\rm c}\simeq 110$, w…
We present evidence that recent numerical results from the reduced classical equations of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model can be interpreted as corresponding to the emergence of an expanding universe. In addition, we propose an effective metric to describe the emerging (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. This metric gives, at all times, finite values for the Ricci and Kretschmann curvature scalars. With these results, we are able to give a heuristic discussion of the origin of the Universe in the context of the IIB matrix model.
The type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In the Lorentzian version, in particular, the emergence of (3+1)D expanding space-time was observed by Monte Carlo studies of this model. Here we provide new perspectives on the (3+1)D expanding space-time that have arised from recent studies. First it was found that the matrix configurations generated by the simulation are singular in that the submatrices representing the expanding 3D space have only two large eigenvalues associated with the Pauli matrices. This problem was conjectured …
The emergence of (3+1)-dimensional expanding space-time in the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is an intriguing phenomenon which was observed in Monte Carlo studies of this model. In particular, this may be taken as a support to the conjecture that the model is a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in (9+1) dimensions. In this paper we investigate the space-time structure of the matrices generated by simulating this model and its simplified versions, and find that the expanding part of the space is described essentially by the Pauli matrices. We argue that this is due to an appr…
We show that there exist supersymmetric Minkowski vacua on Type IIB toroidal orientifold with general flux compactifications where the RR tadpole cancellation conditions can be relaxed and the Freed-Witten anomaly can be cancelled elegantly. We present a realistic Pati-Salam like flux model without the Freed-Witten anomaly. At the string scale, we can break the gauge symmetry down to the Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry, achieve the gauge coupling unification naturally, and decouple all the extra chiral exotic particles. Thus, we have the supersymmetric SMs with/without SM singlet(s) below t…
The type IIB matrix model is one of the most promising candidates for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, its Lorentzian version was shown to exhibit an interesting real-time dynamics such as the spontaneous breaking of the 9-dimensional rotational symmetry to the 3-dimensional one. This result, however, was obtained after regularizing the original matrix integration by introducing "infrared" cutoffs on the quadratic moments of the Hermitian matrices. In this paper, we generalize the form of the cutoffs in such a way that it involves an arbitrary power ($2p$) of…
The large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model can, in principle, give rise to a particular degenerate metric relevant to a regularized big bang. The length parameter of this degenerate metric is then calculated in terms of the IIB-matrix-model length scale.
A sketch of an approach towards Lorentzian spectral geometry (based on joint work with Mario Paschke) is described, together with a general way to define abstractly the quantized Dirac field on such Lorentzian spectral geometries. Moyal-Minkowski spacetime serves as an example. The scattering of the quantized Dirac field by a non-commutative (Moyal-deformed) action of an external scalar potential is investigated. It is shown that differentiating the S-matrix with respect to the strength of the scattering potential gives rise to quantum field operators depending on elements of the non-commutati…
We show that there exist supersymmetric Minkowski vacua on Type IIB toroidal orientifold with general flux compactifications where the RR tadpole cancellation conditions can be relaxed elegantly. Then we present a realistic Pati-Salam like model. At the string scale, the gauge symmetry can be broken down to the Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry, the gauge coupling unification can be achieved naturally, and all the extra chiral exotic particles can be decoupled so that we have the supersymmetric SMs with/without SM singlet(s) below the string scale. The observed SM fermion masses and mixings c…
The large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model is of course not known, but we can assume that we already have it and investigate how the emerging spacetime metric could be extracted. We show that, in principle, it is possible to obtain both the Minkowski metric and the spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric.
Assuming that the large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model has been obtained, we go through the procedure of how the coordinates of emerging spacetime points can be extracted. Explicit calculations with test master fields suggest that the genuine IIB-matrix-model master field may have a fine-structure that is essential for producing the spacetime points of an expanding universe.
We construct five-dimensional non-Lorentzian Lagrangian gauge field theories with an SU(1,3) conformal symmetry and 12 (conformal) supersymmetries. Such theories are interesting in their own right but can arise from six-dimensional (1,0) superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski spacetime. In the limit that the conformal compactification is removed the Lagrangians we find give field theory formulations of DLCQ constructions of six-dimensional (1,0) conformal field theories.
We discuss non-Lorentzian Lagrangian field theories in $2n-1$ dimensions that admit an $SU(1,n)$ spacetime symmetry which includes a scaling transformation. These can be obtained by a conformal compactification of a $2n$-dimensional Minkowskian conformal field theory. We discuss the symmetry algebra, its representations including primary fields and unitarity bounds. We also give various examples of free theories in a variety of dimensions and a discussion of how to reconstruct the parent $2n$-dimensional theory.
The Moyal-Weyl quantization procedure is embedded into the twist formalism of vector fields on phase space. Double application of twists provide most general deformations of Minkowskian Heisenberg-algebras and corresponding quantizations of the Lorentz-algebra. Such deformations deliver high-energy extensions of standard relativistic quantum mechanics. These are required to obtain minimal uncertainty properties for high-energy spacetime measurements that standard quantum mechanics lacks. The procedure of double twist application is outlined. We give an instructive and genuine example.
Boosted and rotated tetrad backgrounds for the Minkowski space are studied in $f(T)$ gravity. We perform Lorentzian perturbations at first order around non-trivial backgrounds and show that some Lorentz modes can exhibit non-trivial dynamics and can propagate in time. This remarkable feature gives evidence of additional mode(s) in the Lorentzian sector which have no precedent in Lorentz-violating modified gravities, however they can cast doubts onto even theoretical viability of these models.
The IIB matrix model has been suggested as a particular formulation of nonperturbative superstring theory (M-theory). It has now been realized that an emerging classical spacetime may reside in its large-$N$ master field. This bosonic master field can, in principle, give rise to Minkowski and Robertson-Walker spacetimes. The outstanding task is to solve the bosonic master-field equation, which is essentially an algebraic equation. In this article, we present new results for the $(D,\,N)=(10,\,4)$ bosonic master-field equation of the IIB matrix model, where $D$ is the number of bosonic matrices…
CFTs in Euclidean signature satisfy well-accepted rules, such as the convergent Euclidean OPE. It is nowadays common to assume that CFT correlators exist and have various properties also in Lorentzian signature. Some of these properties may represent extra assumptions, and it is an open question if they hold for familiar statistical-physics CFTs such as the critical 3d Ising model. Here we consider Wightman 4-point functions of scalar primaries in Lorentzian signature. We derive a minimal set of their properties solely from the Euclidean unitary CFT axioms, without using extra assumptions. We …
We construct non-perturbatively exact four-dimensional Minkowski vacua of type IIB string theory with non-trivial fluxes. These solutions are found by gluing together, consistently with U-duality, local solutions of type IIB supergravity on $T^4 \times \mathbb{C}$ with the metric, dilaton and flux potentials varying along $\mathbb{C}$ and the flux potentials oriented along $T^4$. We focus on solutions locally related via U-duality to non-compact Ricci-flat geometries. More general solutions and a complete analysis of the supersymmetry equations are presented in the companion paper [1]. We buil…
We study the Lorentzian version of the type IIB matrix model as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. Monte Carlo results show that not only space but also time emerges dynamically in this model. Furthermore, the real-time dynamics extracted from the matrices turns out to be remarkable: 3 out of 9 spatial directions start to expand at some critical time. This can be interpreted as the birth of our Universe.
We describe several applications of the recently proposed mass production procedure, where multiple moduli are stabilized in a dS vacuum, in supergravity models inspired by string theory. The construction involves a small downshift of an initial supersymmetric Minkowski minimum to a supersymmetric AdS minimum, and a consequent small uplift to a dS minimum. Our type IIA examples include dS stabilization in a 7-moduli model with $[SL(2, \mathbb{R})]^7$ tree level symmetry, and its simplified version, a 3-moduli STU model. In these models, we use uplifting anti-D6 branes. In type IIB models, we p…
We consider the operator product expansion (OPE) structure of scalar primary operators in a generic Lorentzian CFT and its dual description in a gravitational theory with one extra dimension. The OPE can be decomposed into certain bi-local operators transforming as the irreducible representations under conformal group, called the OPE blocks. We show the OPE block is given by integrating a higher spin field along a geodesic in the Lorentzian AdS space-time when the two operators are space-like separated. When the two operators are time-like separated however, we find the OPE block has a peculia…
The type IIB matrix model has been proposed as a non-perturbative definition of superstring theory since 1996. We study a simplified model that describes the late time behavior of the type IIB matrix model non-perturbatively using Monte Carlo methods, and we use the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We investigate a scenario where the space-time signature changes dynamically from Euclidean at early times to Lorentzian at late times. We discuss the possibility of the emergence of the (3+1)D expanding universe.
Recently we have shown that (3+1)-dimensional expanding universe appears dynamically and uniquely from the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model, which is considered as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Similarly, it is possible that the Standard Model appears uniquely at the electroweak scale from the same model at late times. In order to pursue such a possibility, we discuss how to derive the effective local field theory for the massless modes that appear at late times in the same formulation. As a concrete example, we consider the massless modes associated with the s…
We study correlation functions in five-dimensional non-Lorentzian theories with an $SU(1,3)$ conformal symmetry. Examples of such theories have recently been obtained as $Ω$-deformed Yang-Mills Lagrangians arising from a null reduction of six-dimensional superconformal field theories on a conformally compactified Minkowski space. The correlators exhibit a rich structure with many novel properties compared to conventional correlators in Lorentzian conformal field theories. Moreover, identifying the instanton number with the Fourier mode number of the dimensional reduction offers a hope to formu…
We propose a supersymmetric model that defines M-theory. It possesses SO(1, 10) super Poincare symmetry and is constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. This model is a supersymmetric generalization of the model in arXiv:0902.1333. From our model, we derive BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate BPS vacua.
In this work we study the generalization of twisted homology to geometric and non-geometric backgrounds. In the process we describe the necessary conditions to wrap a network of D-branes on twisted cycles. If the cycle is localized in time, we show how by an instantonic brane mediation, some D-branes transform into fluxes on different backgrounds including non-geometric fluxes. As a consequence, we show that in the case of a IIB six-dimensional torus compactification on a simple orientifold, the flux superpotential is not invariant by this brane-flux transition, allowing the connection among d…
We propose the bosonic part of an action that defines M-theory. It possesses manifest SO(1, 10) symmetry and constructed based on the Lorentzian 3-algebra associated with U(N) Lie algebra. From our action, we derive the bosonic sector of BFSS matrix theory and IIB matrix model in the naive large N limit by taking appropriate vacua. We also discuss an interaction with fermions.
Type II orientifolds based on Landau-Ginzburg models are used to describe moduli stabilization for flux compactifications of type II theories from the world-sheet CFT point of view. We show that for certain types of type IIB orientifolds which have no Kahler moduli and are therefore intrinsically non-geometric, all moduli can be explicitly stabilized in terms of fluxes. The resulting four-dimensional theories can describe Minkowski as well as Anti-de-Sitter vacua. This construction provides the first string vacuum with all moduli frozen and leading to a 4D Minkowski background.
We reconsider the matrix model formulation of type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensional space-time. Unlike the previous proposal in which the Wick rotation was used to make the model well-defined, we regularize the Lorentzian model by introducing infrared cutoffs in both the spatial and temporal directions. Monte Carlo studies reveal that the two cutoffs can be removed in the large-N limit and that the theory thus obtained has no parameters other than one scale parameter. Moreover, we find that three out of nine spatial directions start to expand at some "critical time", after which the…
We review recent developments in the type IIB matrix model, which was conjectured to be a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In the first part we review the recent results for the Euclidean model, which suggest that SO(10) symmetry is spontaneously broken. In the second part we review the recent results for the Lorentzian model. In particular, we discuss Monte Carlo results, which suggest that (3+1)-dimensional expanding universe emerges dynamically. We also discuss some results suggesting the emergence of exponential expansion and the power-law expansion at later times. The be…
Recently we have shown by Monte Carlo simulation that expanding (3+1)-dimensional universe appears dynamically from a Lorentzian matrix model for type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. The mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry relies crucially on the noncommutative nature of the space. Here we study the classical equations of motion as a complementary approach. In particular, we find a unique class of SO(3) symmetric solutions, which exhibits the time-dependence compatible with the expanding universe. The space-space noncommutativity is exactly zero, whereas t…
Recently we have studied the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. By Monte Carlo simulation, we have shown that the notion of time ---as well as space---emerges dynamically from this model, and that we can uniquely extract the real-time dynamics, which turned out to be rather surprising: after some "critical time", the SO(9) rotational symmetry of the nine-dimensional space is spontaneously broken down to SO(3) and the three-dimensional space starts to expand rapidly. In this paper, we study the same model based on the classical equ…
We study how two moduli can be stabilized in a Minkowski/de Sitter vacuum for a wide class of string-inspired Supergravity models with an effective Fayet-like Supersymmetry breaking. It is shown under which conditions this mechanism can be made natural and how it can give rise to an interesting spectrum of soft masses, with a relatively small mass difference between scalar and gaugino masses. In absence of a constant superpotential term, the above mechanism becomes completely natural and gives rise to a dynamical supersymmetry breaking mechanism. Some specific type IIB and heterotic string ins…
The $κ$-Minkoswki space-time provides a quantum noncommutative-deformation of the usual Minkowski space-time. However, a notion of causality is difficult to be defined in such a space with noncommutative time. In this paper, we define a notion of causality on a (1+1)-dimensional $κ$-Minkoswki space-time using the more general framework of Lorentzian noncommutative geometry. We show that this notion allows specific causal relations, but limited by a general constraint which is a quantum generalization of the traditional speed of light limit.
