The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recently we performed complex Langevin simulations by adding a Lorentz invariant mass term as an IR regulator and found a (1+1)-dimensional expanding spacetime with a Lorentzian signature emerging dynamically at late times when the fermionic contribution is omitted. Here we find that this is merely an artifact of the Lorentz boosts by showing that the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry is eliminated if one chooses a Lorentz frame appropriately. On the other hand, when we include the fermionic contribution, we find some evidence suggesting the emergence of a smooth (3+1)-dimensional expanding Lorentzian spacetime.
The type IIB matrix model was proposed as a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory in 1996. We simulate a model that describes the late time behavior of the IIB matrix model by applying the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We clarify the relationship between the Euclidean and the Lorentzian versions of the type IIB matrix model in a recently discovered phase. By introducing a constraint, we obtain a model where the spacetime metric is Euclidean at early times, whereas it {\it dynamically} becomes Lorentzian at late times.
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. However, it was found recently that a Euclidean space-time appears in the conventional large-$N$ limit. In this work, we add a Lorentz invariant mass term to the original model and consider a limit, in which the coefficient of the mass term vanishes at large $N$. By performing complex Langevin simulations to overcome the sign problem, we observe the emergence of expanding space-time with the Lorentzian signature.
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a non-perturbative formulation of superstring theory. In previous studies, Monte Carlo calculations provided interesting results indicating the spontaneous breaking of SO(9) to SO(3) and the emergence of (3+1)-dimensional space-time. However, an approximation was used to avoid the sign problem, which seemed to make the space-time structure singular. In this talk, we report our results obtained by using the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem instead of using this approximation. In particular, we discuss the emer…
We propose a new method for studying the early universe in the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model, which is considered to be a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. This method is based on the idea of renormalization group, and it enables us to study the time-evolution of the universe for much longer time than in the previous work, which showed that the SO(9) rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken down to SO(3) after a "critical time". We demonstrate how this method works in a simplified model, which is expected to capture the behaviors of the original model when the …
The Lorentzian type IIB matrix model has been studied as a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, the emergence of (3+1)D expanding space-time was observed by Monte Carlo studies of this model. It has been found recently, however, that the matrix configurations generated by the simulation is singular in that the submatrices representing the expanding 3D space have only two large eigenvalues associated with the Pauli matrices. This problem has been attributed to the approximation used to avoid the sign problem in simulating the model. Here we…
The type IIB matrix model is a conjectured nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recent studies on the Lorentzian version of the model have shown that only three out of nine spatial directions start to expand after some critical time. On the other hand, due to the unbounded action of the Lorentzian model, one has to introduce infrared (IR) cutoffs in order to make the partition function finite. In this work we investigate whether the effects of the IR cutoffs disappear in the infinite volume limit. For that purpose, we study a simplified model with large matrix size up to $N=256$ …
The type IIB matrix model is a conjectured nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Recently the Lorentzian version of the model has been studied by Monte Carlo simulation, and it has been shown that only three out of nine spatial directions start to expand after a critical time. We extend this work by investigating the expanding behavior for much longer time. We find that the 3d space expands exponentially for some period of time, which may be interpreted as inflation. We also simulate a simplified model, which is expected to capture some qualitative features of the original model a…

Recent studies on the Lorentzian version of the type IIB matrix model show that (3+1)D expanding universe emerges dynamically from (9+1)D space-time predicted by superstring theory. Here we study a bosonic matrix model obtained by omitting the fermionic matrices. With the adopted simplification and the usage of a large-scale parallel computer, we are able to perform Monte Carlo calculations with matrix size up to $N=512$, which is twenty times larger than that used previously for the studies of the original model. When the matrix size is larger than some critical value $N_{\rm c}\simeq 110$, w…
The type IIB matrix model has been investigated as a possible nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, it was found by Monte Carlo simulation of the Lorentzian version that the 9-dimensional rotational symmetry of the spatial matrices is broken spontaneously to the 3-dimensional one after some "critical time". In this paper we develop a new simulation method based on the effective theory for the submatrices corresponding to the late time. Using this method, one can obtain the results for $N\times N$ matrices by simulating matrices typically of the size $O(\sqrt{N})$. W…
The emergence of (3+1)-dimensional expanding space-time in the Lorentzian type IIB matrix model is an intriguing phenomenon which was observed in Monte Carlo studies of this model. In particular, this may be taken as a support to the conjecture that the model is a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in (9+1) dimensions. In this paper we investigate the space-time structure of the matrices generated by simulating this model and its simplified versions, and find that the expanding part of the space is described essentially by the Pauli matrices. We argue that this is due to an appr…
The type IIB matrix model is one of the most promising candidates for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In particular, its Lorentzian version was shown to exhibit an interesting real-time dynamics such as the spontaneous breaking of the 9-dimensional rotational symmetry to the 3-dimensional one. This result, however, was obtained after regularizing the original matrix integration by introducing "infrared" cutoffs on the quadratic moments of the Hermitian matrices. In this paper, we generalize the form of the cutoffs in such a way that it involves an arbitrary power ($2p$) of…
We study N=1 compactification of IIB supergravity to AdS4. The internal manifold must have SU(2)-structure. By putting some restrictions on the SU(2) torsion classes, we can perform an exhaustive scan of all possible solutions on group manifolds. We show that sourceless solutions don't exist and that the presence of O5 and O7 orientifolds is mandatory. We also find a new solution and relate it by T-duality to a known type IIA solution with O6 planes.
The type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. As such, it is expected to explain the origin of space--time and matter at the same time. This has been partially demonstrated by the previous Monte Carlo studies on the Lorentzian version of the model, which suggested the emergence of (3+1)-dimensional expanding space--time. Here we investigate the same model by solving numerically the classical equation of motion, which is expected to be valid at late times since the action becomes large due to the expansion of space. Many solutions ar…
We present evidence that recent numerical results from the reduced classical equations of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model can be interpreted as corresponding to the emergence of an expanding universe. In addition, we propose an effective metric to describe the emerging (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. This metric gives, at all times, finite values for the Ricci and Kretschmann curvature scalars. With these results, we are able to give a heuristic discussion of the origin of the Universe in the context of the IIB matrix model.
The type IIB matrix model is a promising candidate for a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In the Lorentzian version, in particular, the emergence of (3+1)D expanding space-time was observed by Monte Carlo studies of this model. Here we provide new perspectives on the (3+1)D expanding space-time that have arised from recent studies. First it was found that the matrix configurations generated by the simulation are singular in that the submatrices representing the expanding 3D space have only two large eigenvalues associated with the Pauli matrices. This problem was conjectured …
We discuss the calculation of soft supersymmetry breaking terms in type IIB string theoretic models in the Large Volume Scenario (LVS). The suppression of FCNC gives a lower bound on the size of the compactification volume. This leads to soft terms which are strongly suppressed relative to the gravitino mass so that the dominant contribution to the gaugino masses comes from the Weyl anomaly. The other soft terms are essentially generated by the renormalization group running from the string scale to the TeV scale.
We describe a stabilization mechanism for fuzzy $S^4_N$ in the Euclidean IIB matrix model due to vacuum energy in the presence of a positive mass term. The one-loop effective potential for the radius contains an attractive contribution attributed to supergravity, while the mass term induces a repulsive contribution for small radius due to SUSY breaking. This leads to a stabilization of the radius. The mechanism should be pertinent to recent results on the genesis of 3+1-dimensional space-time in the Minkowskian IIB model.
The large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model can, in principle, give rise to a particular degenerate metric relevant to a regularized big bang. The length parameter of this degenerate metric is then calculated in terms of the IIB-matrix-model length scale.
Here, we calculate the pseudo-scalar glueball mass at finite temperature from the holographic QCD in $3+1$ dimensions. The decoupled geometry of the non-supersymmetric (non-susy) D$3$ brane at the finite temperature which is the solution of the type-II supergravity is considered as the dual theory of QCD. We calculate the mass spectrum from the axion fluctuation in this gravity background using WKB approximations. Approximating the WKB equation for various orders of mass, we derive the analytical expressions of the mass spectrum of $0^{-+}$ at the finite temperature. Finally we evaluate the ma…
The vertex operators for the supergravity multiplet can be constructed through the Wilson lines in IIB matrix model. We investigate the structure of the vertex operators and the symmetry of their correlation functions. For this purpose, we perturb the theory by the Wilson lines dual to the supergravity multiplet. The structure of the Wilson lines can be determined by requiring $\cal{N}$=2 SUSY under the low energy approximation. We argue that the generating functional of the correlators is invariant under local SUSY transformations of IIB supergravity.
The large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model is of course not known, but we can assume that we already have it and investigate how the emerging spacetime metric could be extracted. We show that, in principle, it is possible to obtain both the Minkowski metric and the spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric.
It is well-known that the non-supersymmetric D3 brane (a cousin of BPS D3 brane) including its black version of type IIB string theory has a decoupling limit, where the decoupled geometry is the gravity dual of a non-supersymmetric, non-conformal (finite temperature) quantum field theory having some properties similar to QCD. Using the ideas of AdS/CFT we study some non-perturbative aspects of this quantum field theory. Since in this case we have a Yang-Mills theory (no quarks) with running coupling (non-constant dilaton), we compute the gluon condensate in this theory as a function of tempera…
5-branes of nontrivial topology are associated in the Diaconescu-Hanany-Witten-Witten (DHWW) approach with the Seiberg-Witten (SW) theory of low-energy effective actions. There are two different "pictures", related to the IIA and IIB phases of M-theory. They differ by the choice of $6d$ theory on the 5-brane world volume. In the IIB picture it is just the 6d SUSY Yang-Mills, while in the IIA picture it is a theory of SUSY self-dual 2-form. These two pictures appear capable to describe the (non-abelian) Lax operator and (abelian) low-energy effective action respectively. Thus IIB-IIA duality is…
Assuming that the large-$N$ master field of the Lorentzian IIB matrix model has been obtained, we go through the procedure of how the coordinates of emerging spacetime points can be extracted. Explicit calculations with test master fields suggest that the genuine IIB-matrix-model master field may have a fine-structure that is essential for producing the spacetime points of an expanding universe.
We find Wess-Zumino actions for kappa invariant IIB D-branes in the explicit form. A simple and compact expression is obtained by the grace of spinor variables which are defined as power series of differential forms. Once explicit form of the Wess-Zumino actions is determined, global supersymmetry (SUSY) charges and constraint equations including local supersymmetry (kappa) generators can be determined. The SUSY algebra and the central charges are also calculated explicitly.
We study the quantum stability of Type IIB orbifold and orientifold string models in various dimensions, including Melvin backgrounds, where supersymmetry (SUSY) is broken {\it à la} Scherk-Schwarz (SS) by twisting periodicity conditions along a circle of radius R. In particular, we compute the R-dependence of the one-loop induced vacuum energy density $ρ(R)$, or cosmological constant. For SS twists different from Z2 we always find, for both orbifolds and orientifolds, a monotonic $ρ(R)<0$, eventually driving the system to a tachyonic instability. For Z2 twists, orientifold models can have a d…
We study the Lorentzian version of the type IIB matrix model as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. Monte Carlo results show that not only space but also time emerges dynamically in this model. Furthermore, the real-time dynamics extracted from the matrices turns out to be remarkable: 3 out of 9 spatial directions start to expand at some critical time. This can be interpreted as the birth of our Universe.
We discuss the non-constant dilaton deformed ${\rm AdS}_5\times{\rm S}_5$ solutions of IIB supergravity where AdS sector is described by black hole. The investigation of running gauge coupling (exponent of dilaton) of non-SUSY gauge theory at finite temperature is presented for different regimes (high or low T, large radius expansion). Running gauge coupling shows power-like behavior on temperature with stable fixed point. The quark-antiquark potential at finite T is found and possibility of confinement is established. It is shown that non-constant dilaton affects the potential, sometimes reve…
The type IIB matrix model has been proposed as a non-perturbative definition of superstring theory since 1996. We study a simplified model that describes the late time behavior of the type IIB matrix model non-perturbatively using Monte Carlo methods, and we use the complex Langevin method to overcome the sign problem. We investigate a scenario where the space-time signature changes dynamically from Euclidean at early times to Lorentzian at late times. We discuss the possibility of the emergence of the (3+1)D expanding universe.
In this paper we study homogeneous backgrounds of type IIB supergravity where the underlying geometry is that of a symmetric space. We determine which ten-dimensional lorentzian symmetric spaces (up to local isometry) admit such backgrounds and in about two thirds of the cases we determine fully their moduli space.
It has been suggested that the observed value of the cosmological constant is related to the supersymmetry breaking scale M_{susy} through the formula Lambda \sim M_p^4 (M_{susy}/M_p)^8. We point out that a similar relation naturally arises in the codimension two solutions of warped space-time varying compactifications of string theory in which non-isotropic stringy moduli induce a small but positive cosmological constant.
We show that supersymmetric flux vacua with intermediate SU(2) structure is closely related to some special classes of half-flat structures. More concretely, solutions of the SUSY equations IIA possess a symplectic half-flat structure, whereas solutions of the SUSY equations IIB admit a half-flat structure which is in certain sense near to the balanced condition. Using this result we show that compact simply connected manifolds do not admit type IIB solutions. New solutions of the SUSY equations IIA and IIB are constructed from hyperkähler 4-manifolds, special hypo 5-manifolds and 6-dimensiona…
We reconsider the matrix model formulation of type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensional space-time. Unlike the previous proposal in which the Wick rotation was used to make the model well-defined, we regularize the Lorentzian model by introducing infrared cutoffs in both the spatial and temporal directions. Monte Carlo studies reveal that the two cutoffs can be removed in the large-N limit and that the theory thus obtained has no parameters other than one scale parameter. Moreover, we find that three out of nine spatial directions start to expand at some "critical time", after which the…
We show that five-dimensional anti de-Sitter space remains a solution to low-energy type IIB supergravity when the leading higher-derivative corrections to the classical supergravity (which are non-perturbative in the string coupling) are included. Furthermore, at this order in the low energy expansion of the IIB theory the graviton two-point and three-point functions in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ are shown not to be renormalized and a precise expression is obtained for the four-graviton and related S-matrix elements. By invoking Maldacena's conjectured connection between IIB superstring theory and su…
We review recent developments in the type IIB matrix model, which was conjectured to be a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. In the first part we review the recent results for the Euclidean model, which suggest that SO(10) symmetry is spontaneously broken. In the second part we review the recent results for the Lorentzian model. In particular, we discuss Monte Carlo results, which suggest that (3+1)-dimensional expanding universe emerges dynamically. We also discuss some results suggesting the emergence of exponential expansion and the power-law expansion at later times. The be…
We choose such boundary conditions for open IIB superstring theory which preserve N=1 SUSY. The explicite solution of the boundary conditions yields effective theory which is symmetric under world-sheet parity transformation $Ω:σ\to-σ$. We recognize effective theory as closed type I superstring theory. Its background fields, beside known $Ω$ even fields of the initial IIB theory, contain improvements quadratic in $Ω$ odd ones.
This paper develops the computation of soft supersymmetry breaking terms for chiral D7 matter fields in IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications with stabilised moduli. We determine explicit expressions for soft terms for the single-modulus KKLT scenario and the multiple-moduli large volume scenario. In particular we use the chiral matter metrics for Calabi-Yau backgrounds recently computed in hep-th/0609180. These differ from the better understood metrics for non-chiral matter and therefore give a different structure of soft terms. The soft terms take a simple form depending explicitly on the mo…
Using the method of simple current extensions, asymmetric Gepner models of Type IIB with N=1 space-time supersymmetry are constructed. The combinatorics of the massless vector fields suggests that these classical Minkowski string vacua provide fully backreacted solutions corresponding to N=1 minima of N=2 gauged supergravity. The latter contain abelian gaugings along the axionic isometries in the hypermultiplet moduli space, and can be considered as Type IIB flux compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds equipped with (non-)geometric fluxes. For a particular class of asymmetric Gepner models, …
Recently we have shown by Monte Carlo simulation that expanding (3+1)-dimensional universe appears dynamically from a Lorentzian matrix model for type IIB superstring theory in (9+1)-dimensions. The mechanism for the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry relies crucially on the noncommutative nature of the space. Here we study the classical equations of motion as a complementary approach. In particular, we find a unique class of SO(3) symmetric solutions, which exhibits the time-dependence compatible with the expanding universe. The space-space noncommutativity is exactly zero, whereas t…
We study the 3D field theory on one D3-brane stretched between (r,s) and (p,q)5-branes. The boundary conditions are determined from the analysis of NS5 and D5 charges of the two 5-branes. We carry out the mode expansions for all the fields and identify the field theory as Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. We examine the mass spectrum to determine the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry (SUSY) in this field theory and compare the results with those from the brane configurations. The spectrum is found to be invariant under the Type IIB SL(2,{\bf Z})-transformation. We also discuss the theory with m…
We discuss an attempt to understand confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in a 4-dimensional non-supersymmetric gauge theory using S-duality in type IIB string theory. The electric theory is a USp(2n) gauge theory and its magnetic dual is argued to be an SO(2n) or SO(2n-1) gauge theory. These theories are obtained as the low-energy effective theory of O3-D3bar systems in type IIB string theory, which are related by S-duality. Confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in the USp(2n) gauge theory are caused by the condensation of scalar fields in the magnetic dual description, which is c…
Recently we have shown that (3+1)-dimensional expanding universe appears dynamically and uniquely from the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model, which is considered as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. Similarly, it is possible that the Standard Model appears uniquely at the electroweak scale from the same model at late times. In order to pursue such a possibility, we discuss how to derive the effective local field theory for the massless modes that appear at late times in the same formulation. As a concrete example, we consider the massless modes associated with the s…
Recently we have studied the Lorentzian version of the IIB matrix model as a nonperturbative formulation of superstring theory. By Monte Carlo simulation, we have shown that the notion of time ---as well as space---emerges dynamically from this model, and that we can uniquely extract the real-time dynamics, which turned out to be rather surprising: after some "critical time", the SO(9) rotational symmetry of the nine-dimensional space is spontaneously broken down to SO(3) and the three-dimensional space starts to expand rapidly. In this paper, we study the same model based on the classical equ…
In a previous work (arXiv:0902.3750 [hep-th]) we studied the world-sheet conformal invariance for superstrings in type IIB R-R plane-wave in semi-light-cone gauge. Here we give further justification to the results found in that work through alternative arguments using dynamical supersymmetries. We show that by using the susy algebra the same quantum definition of the energy-momentum (EM) tensor can be derived. Furthermore, using certain Jacobi identities we indirectly compute the Virasoro anomaly terms by calculating second order susy variation of the EM tensor. Certain integrated form of all …
The cylinder diagrams that determine the static interactions between pairs of Dp-branes in the type IIB plane wave background are evaluated. The resulting expressions are elegant generalizations of the flat-space formulae that depend on the value of the Ramond-Ramond flux of the background in a non-trivial manner. The closed-string and open-string descriptions consistently transform into each other under a modular transformation only when each of the interacting D-branes separately preserves half the supersymmetries. These results are derived for configurations of euclidean signature D(p+1)-in…
We describe the computation of SUSY-breaking terms on a D3-brane in a quite general type IIB supergravity background. We apply it to study the SUSY-breaking induced on the D3-brane world-volume by the presence of NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes. We provide explicit general formulae for the SUSY-breaking soft terms valid for the different types of fluxes, leading to different patterns of soft terms. Imaginary anti-selfdual fluxes with G_3 a pure (3,0)-form lead to soft terms corresponding to dilaton-dominated SUSY-breaking. More general SUSY-breaking patterns are discussed, arising from more general …
We study the asymptotic limits of the heterotic string theories compactified on tori. We find a bilinear form uniquely determined by dualities which becomes Lorentzian in the case of one spacetime dimension. For the case of the SO(32) theory, the limiting descriptions include SO(32) heterotic strings, type I, type IA and other T-duals, M-theory on K3, type IIA theory on K3 and type IIB theory on K3 and possibly new limits not understood yet.
It is well known that D-brane instantons can generate contributions to the effective superpotential of gauge theories living on D-branes which are perturbatively forbidden by global U(1) symmetries. We extend this idea to theories with supersymmetry breaking, studying the effect of D-brane instantons stretched between the SUSY-breaking and visible sectors. Analogously to what happens in the SUSY case, this mechanism can give rise to perturbatively forbidden soft terms (among other effects). We introduce and discuss general properties of instanton mediation. We illustrate our ideas in simple Ty…
We present an analysis of compactifications of the type IIB superstring on AdS_5 x S^5 / Γ, where Γis an abelian cyclic group. Every Γ=Z_n of order n<= 12 is considered. This results in 60 chiral models, and a systematic analysis with n<8 yields four containing the minimal SUSY standard model with three families. One of these models extends to an infinite sequence of three-family MSSMs. We also give a lower bound on the number of chiral models for all values of n.
We consider the action of a non-abelian T-duality on backgrounds with an AdS${}_5$ factor in type IIA supergravity, finding a new type IIB background, as well as the non-abelian T-dual of a domain wall solution which has as limits the non-abelian T-dual of $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ and the non-abelian T-dual of $AdS_3\times \mathbb{R}^2\times S^2\times S^3$. We explore some consequences of non-abelian T-duality for the dual conformal field theories.
We continue our study of the IIB matrix model on fuzzy $S^2 \times S^2$. Especially in this paper we focus on the case where the size of one of $S^2\times S^2$ is different from the other. By the power counting and SUSY cancellation arguments, we can identify the 't Hooft coupling and large $N$ scaling behavior of the effective action to all orders. We conclude that the most symmetric $S^2 \times S^2$ configuration where the both $S^2$s are of the same size is favored at the two loop level. In addition we develop a new approach to evaluate the amplitudes on fuzzy $S^2 \times S^2$.
