We determine the logarithmic growth exponents of the $L^p$ norms, $1\le p\le\infty$, of $L^2$-normalized Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit disk, for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We also prove sharp uniform $L^p$ upper and lower bounds for every $L^2$-normalized Dirichlet eigenfunction and every non-constant Neumann eigenfunction $u_λ$ on the disk. The proof uses stationary phase estimates and integral estimates for Bessel functions.
We give a description of the growth rates of $L^2$-normalized Laplace eigenfunctions on the unit disk with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we show that the growth rates of both Dirichlet and Neumann eigenfunctions are bounded away from zero. Our approach starts with P. Sarnak growth exponents and uses several key asymptotic formulas for Bessel functions or their zeros.
We estimate the volume of superlevel sets of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions on a compact Riemannian manifold. The proof uses the Green's function representation and the Bathtub principle. As an application, we obtain upper bounds on the distribution of the extrema of a Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunction over its nodal domains. Such bounds have been previously proved by L. Polterovich and M. Sodin in the case of compact surfaces. Our techniques allow to generalize these results to arbitrary dimensions. We also discuss a different approach to the problem based on reverse Hölder inequalities due to …
We obtain restrictions on the persistence barcodes of Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunctions and their linear combinations on compact surfaces with Riemannian metrics. Some applications to uniform approximation by linear combinations of Laplace eigenfunctions are also discussed.
In this paper we consider eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a planar domain with polygonal boundary with Dirichlet, Neumann, or mixed boundary conditions. The main result is a quantitative estimate on the $L^2$ mass of eigenfunctions near a point in terms of the distance to the nearest non-adjacent boundary face. In particular, eigenfunctions cannot concentrate completely at any one single point. The technique of proof is to use the commutator ideas from the recent work of the author \cite{Chr-tri,Chr-simp} on triangles and simplices.
We prove that, given any knot $γ$ in a compact 3-manifold M, there exists a Riemannian metric on M such that there is a complex-valued eigenfunction u of the Laplacian, corresponding to the first nontrivial eigenvalue, whose nodal set $u^{-1}(0)$ has a connected component given by $γ$. Higher dimensional analogs of this result will also be considered.
A new idea to approximate the second eigenfunction and the second eigenvalue of $p$-Laplace operator is given. In the case of the Dirichlet boundary condition, the scheme has the restriction that the positive and the negative part of the second eigenfunction have equal $L^p$-norm, however, in the case of Neumann boundary condition, our algorithm has not such restriction. Our algorithm generates a descending sequence of positive numbers that converges to the second eigenvalue. We give various examples and computational tests.
Let X be a manifold equipped with a complete Riemannian metric of constant negative curvature and finite volume. We demonstrate the finiteness of the collection of totally geodesic immersed hypersurfaces in X that lie in the zero-level set of some Laplace eigenfunction. For surfaces, we show that the number can be bounded just in terms of the area of the surface. We also provide constructions of geodesics in hyperbolic surfaces that lie in a nodal set but that do not lie in the fixed point set of a reflection symmetry.
Consider an $L^2$-normalized Laplace-Beltrami eigenfunction $e_λ$ on a compact, boundary-less Riemannian manifold with $Δe_λ= -λ^2 e_λ$. We study eigenfunction triple products \[ \langle e_λe_μ, e_ν\rangle = \int e_λe_μ\overline{e_ν} \, dV. \] We show the overall $\ell^2$-concentration of these triple products is determined by the measure of some set of configurations of triangles with side lengths equal to the frequencies $λ,μ,$ and $ν$. A rapidly vanishing proportion of this mass lies in the `classically forbidden' regime where $λ, μ,$ and $ν$ fail to satisfy the triangle inequality. As a co…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $C^{1}$ boundary and let $u_λ$ be a Dirichlet Laplace eigenfunction in $Ω$ with eigenvalue $λ$. We show that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the zero set of $u_λ$ does not exceed $C(Ω)\sqrtλ$. This result is new even for the case of domains with $C^\infty$-smooth boundary.
We prove a result, announced by F. Nazarov, L. Polterovich and M. Sodin that exhibits a relation between the average local growth of a Laplace eigenfunction on a closed surface and the global size of its nodal set. More precisely, we provide a lower and an upper bound to the Hausdorff measure of the nodal set in terms of the expected value of the growth exponent of an eigenfunction on disks of wavelength like radius. Combined with Yau's conjecture, the result implies that the average local growth of an eigenfunction on such disks is bounded by constants in the semi-classical limit. We also obt…
In this paper, we introduce a new notion of convergence for the Laplace eigenfunctions in the semiclassical limit, the local weak convergence. This allows us to give a rigorous statement of Berry's random wave conjecture. Using recent results of Bourgain, Buckley and Wigman, we will prove that some deterministic families of eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{T}^2$ satisfy the conclusions of the random wave conjecture. We also show that on an arbitrary domain, a sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions always admits local weak limits. We explain why these local weak limits can be a powerful tool to study the…
Let $M$ be a compact, connected Riemannian manifold whose Riemannian volume measure is denoted by $σ$. Let $f: M \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a non-constant eigenfunction of the Laplacian. The random wave conjecture suggests that in certain situations, the value distribution of $f$ under $σ$ is approximately Gaussian. Write $μ$ for the measure whose density with respect to $σ$ is $|\nabla f|^2$. We observe that the value distribution of $f$ under $μ$ admits a unimodal density attaining its maximum at the origin. Thus, in a sense, the zero set of an eigenfunction is the largest of all level sets.…
We study the stability properties of nodal sets of Laplace eigenfunctions on compact manifolds under specific small perturbations. We prove that nodal sets are fairly stable if said perturbations are relatively small, more formally, supported at a sub-wavelength scale. We do not need any assumption on the topology of the nodal sets. As an indirect application, we are able to show that a certain "Payne property" concerning the second nodal line remains stable under controlled perturbations of the domain.
We investigate several aspects of the nodal geometry and topology of Laplace eigenfunctions, with particular emphasis on the low frequency regime. This includes investigations in and around the Payne property, opening angle estimates of nodal domains, saturation of (fundamental) spectral gaps etc., and behaviour of all of the above under small scale perturbations. We aim to highlight interesting aspects of spectral theory and nodal phenomena tied to ground state/low energy eigenfunctions, as opposed to asymptotic results.
We consider the question of when the Laplace eigenfunctions on an arbitrary flat torus $\mathbf{T}_Γ:=\mathbf{R}^d/Γ$ are flexible enough to approximate, over the natural length scale of order $1/\sqrtλ$, where $λ\gg1$ is the eigenvalue, an arbitary solution of the Helmholtz equation $Δh + h=0$ on $\mathbf{R}^d$. This problem is motivated by the fact that, by the asymptotics for the local Weyl law, "approximate Laplace eigenfunctions" do have this approximation property on any compact Riemannian manifold. What we find is that the answer depends solely on the arithmetic properties of the spectr…
This is a review of old and new results and methods related to the Yau conjecture on the zero set of Laplace eigenfunctions. The review accompanies two lectures given at the conference CDM 2018. We discuss the works of Donnelly and Fefferman including their solution of the conjecture in the case of real-analytic Riemannian manifolds. The review exposes the new results for Yau's conjecture in the smooth setting. We try to avoid technical details and emphasize the main ideas of the proof of Nadirashvili's conjecture. We also discuss two-dimensional methods to study zero sets.
Let $Δ_M$ be the Laplace operator on a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. We study the zero sets of its eigenfunctions $u:Δu + λu =0$. In dimension $n=2$ we refine the Donnelly-Fefferman estimate by showing that $H^1(\{u=0 \})\le Cλ^{3/4-β}$, $β\in (0,1/4)$. The proof employs the Donnelli-Fefferman estimate and a combinatorial argument, which also gives a lower (non-sharp) bound in dimension $n=3$: $H^2(\{u=0\})\ge cλ^α$, $α\in (0,1/2)$. The positive constants $c,C$ depend on the manifold, $α$ and $β$ are universal.
Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a compact $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, $n\geq 3$, and let $φ_λ: Δ_M φ_λ+ λφ_λ= 0$ denote the Laplace eigenfunction on $\mathbb{M}$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$. We show that $$H^{n-1}(\{ φ_λ=0\}) \leq C λ^α,$$ where $α>1/2$ is a constant, which depends on $n$ only, and $C>0$ depends on $\mathbb{M}$ . This result is a consequence of our study of zero sets of harmonic functions on $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifolds. We develop a technique of propagation of smallness for solutions of elliptic PDE that allows us to obtain local bounds from …
We provide a limiting absorption principle for the self-adjoint realizations of Laplace operators corresponding to boundary conditions on (relatively open parts $Σ$ of) compact hypersurfaces $Γ=\partialΩ$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n}$. For any of such self-adjoint operators we also provide the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering matrix; both these objects are written in terms of operator-valued Weyl functions. We make use of a Krein-type formula which provides the resolvent difference between the operator corresponding to self-adjoint boundary conditions on the hypersurface and the fre…
Let $u$ be a harmonic function in the unit ball $B(0,1) \subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \geq 3$, such that $u(0)=0$. Nadirashvili conjectured that there exists a positive constant $c$, depending on the dimension $n$ only, such that $H^{n-1}(\{u=0 \}\cap B) \geq c$. We prove Nadirashvili's conjecture as well as its counterpart on $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifolds. The latter yields the lower bound in Yau's conjecture. Namely, we show that for any compact $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold $M$ (without boundary) of dimension $n$ there exists $c>0$ such that for any Laplace eigenfunction $φ_λ$ …
Over the last few years Pohl (partly jointly with coauthors) developed dual `slow/fast' transfer operator approaches to automorphic functions, resonances, and Selberg zeta functions for a certain class of hyperbolic surfaces $Γ\backslash\mathbb{H}$ with cusps and all finite-dimensional unitary representations $χ$ of $Γ$. The eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the fast transfer operators determine the zeros of the Selberg zeta function for $(Γ,χ)$. Further, if $Γ$ is cofinite and $χ$ is the trivial one-dimensional representation then highly regular eigenfunctions with eigenvalue $1$ of the s…
We study the growth of Laplacian eigenfunctions $ -Δϕ_k = λ_k ϕ_k$ on compact manifolds $(M,g)$. Hörmander proved sharp polynomial bounds on $\| ϕ_k\|_{L^{\infty}}$ which are attained on the sphere. On a `generic' manifold, the behavior seems to be different: both numerics and Berry's random wave model suggest $\| ϕ_k\|_{L^{\infty}} \lesssim \sqrt{\log{λ_k}}$ as the typical behavior. We propose a mechanism, centered around an $L^1-$analogue of the spectral projector, for explaining the slow growth in the generic case: for $ϕ_{n+1}(x_0)$ to be large, it is necessary that either (1) several of t…
We study the nodal set of Laplace eigenfunctions on the flat $2d$ torus $\mathbb{T}^2$. We prove an asymptotic law for the nodal length of such eigenfunctions, under some growth assumptions on their Fourier coefficients. Moreover, we show that their nodal set is asymptotically equidistributed on $\mathbb{T}^2$. The proofs are based on Bourgain's de-randomisation technique and the main new ingredient, which might be of independent interest, is the integrability of arbitrarily large powers of the doubling index of Laplace eigenfunctions on $\mathbb{T}^2$, based on the work of Nazarov \cite{N93,N…
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact, smooth, Riemannian manifold and $\{ ϕ_h \}$ an $L^2$-normalized sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions with defect measure $μ$. Let $H$ be a smooth hypersurface. Our main result says that when $μ$ is $\textit{not}$ concentrated conormally to $H$, the eigenfunction restrictions to $H$ and the restrictions of their normal derivatives to $H$ have integrals converging to 0 as $h \to 0^+$.
Let $H$ be a generalized Schrödinger operator on a domain of a non-compact connected Riemannian manifold, and a generalized eigenfunction $u$ for $H$: that is, $u$ satisfies the equation $Hu=λu$ in the weak sense but is not necessarily in $L^2$. The problem is to find conditions on the growth of $u$, so that $λ$ belongs to the spectrum of $H$. We unify and generalize known results on this problem. In addition, a variety of examples is provided, illustrating the different nature of the growth conditions.
We prove Polterovich's conjecture concerning the growth of the number of nodal domains for eigenfunctions on a unit square domain, under the assumption that the eigenfunctions do not have any singular points.
We show that eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a Riemannian manifold are approximated by eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a (suitably weighted) graph Laplace operator of a proximity graph on an epsilon-net.
In a recent paper, we exhibit a link between the average local growth of Laplace eigenfunctions on surfaces and the size of their nodal set. In that paper, the average local growth is computed using the uniform - or $L^\infty$ - growth exponents on disks of wavelength radius. The purpose of this note is to prove similar results for a broader class of $L^q$ growth exponents with $q \in (1, \infty)$. More precisely, we show that the size of the nodal set is bounded above and below by the product of the average local $L^q$ growth with the frequency. We briefly discuss the relation between this ne…
It is well-known that there are automorphic eigenfunctions on SL(2,Z)\SL(2,R)/SO(2,R) -- such as the classical $j$-function -- that have exponential growth and have exponentially growing Fourier coefficients (e.g., negative powers of $q=e^{2πi z}$, or an I-Bessel function). We show that this phenomenon does not occur on the quotient SL(3,Z)\SL(3,R)/SO(3,R) and eigenvalues in general position (a removable technical assumption). More precisely, if such an automorphic eigenfunction has at most exponential growth, it cannot have non-decaying Whittaker functions in its Fourier expansion. This confi…
A characterization of the essential spectrum $σ_{\text ess}$ of Schrödinger operators on infinite graphs is derived involving the concept of $\mathcal{R}$-limits. This concept, which was introduced previously for operators on $\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$ as "right-limits", captures the behaviour of the operator at infinity. For graphs with sub-exponential growth rate we show that each point in $σ_{\text ess}(H)$ corresponds to a bounded generalized eigenfunction of a corresponding $\mathcal{R}$-limit of $H$. If, additionally, the graph is of uniform sub-exponential growth, also the converse…
We consider linear combinations of eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ and investigate a density property of their zero sets. More precisely, let $f=\sum_{k=1}^m a_k ϕ_{λ_{j_k}}$, where $-Δ_gϕ_λ=λϕ_λ$. Denoting by $Z_f$ the zero-set of $f$, we show that for any $x\in M$, $dist(x,Z_f)\leq C(m)λ_{j_1}^{-1/2}$. The proof is based on a new integral Harnack-type estimate for positive solutions of higher order elliptic PDEs.
Let $\{e_j\}$ be an orthonormal basis of Laplace eigenfunctions of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$. Let $H \subset M$ be a submanifold and let $\{ψ_k\}$ be an orthonormal basis of Laplace eigenfunctions of $H$ with the induced metric. We obtain joint asymptotics for the Fourier coefficients \[ \langle γ_H e_j, ψ_k \rangle_{L^2(H)} = \int_H e_j \overline ψ_k \, dV_H, \] of restrictions $γ_H e_j$ of $e_j$ to $H$. In particular, we obtain asymptotics for the sums of the norm-squares of the Fourier coefficients over the joint spectrum $\{(μ_k, λ_j)\}_{j,k - 0}^{\infty}$ of the (square roots …
We study the relationship between $L^\infty$ growth of eigenfunctions and their $L^2$ concentration as measured by defect measures. In particular, we show that scarring in the sense of concentration of defect measure on certain submanifolds is incompatible with maximal $L^\infty$ growth. In addition, we show that a defect measure which is too diffuse, such as the Liouville measure, is also incompatible with maximal eigenfunction growth.
Let $(M,g)$ be a smooth, compact Riemannian manifold and $\{ϕ_h\}$ an $L^2$-normalized sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions, $-h^2Δ_gϕ_h=ϕ_h$. Given a smooth submanifold $H \subset M$ of codimension $k\geq 1$, we find conditions on the pair $(\{ϕ_h\},H)$ for which $$ \Big|\int_Hϕ_hdσ_H\Big|=o(h^{\frac{1-k}{2}}),\qquad h\to 0^+. $$ One such condition is that the set of conormal directions to $H$ that are recurrent has measure $0$. In particular, we show that the upper bound holds for any $H$ if $(M,g)$ is surface with Anosov geodesic flow or a manifold of constant negative curvature. The results …
It has been empirically observed that eigenfunctions of Laplace's equation $-Δϕ= λϕ$ with Neumann boundary conditions sometimes localize near the boundary of the domain if that boundary is rough (say, fractal). This has some nontrivial implications in acoustics that has been put to real-life use (sound attenuation by noise-protective walls); this short paper describes the mathematical mechanism responsible for this and describes the quantitative strength of the phenomenon for some examples.
