Mixed-halide perovskites offer a route to enhance phase stability and modify optoelectronic properties. Here, we use large-scale molecular dynamics simulations with a reactive force field to investigate defects in CsPbBr$_\mathrm{x}$I$_\mathrm{3-x}$ perovskites, focusing on how defect mobility can be controlled and the stability of the material improved by layered ordering of Br and I anions. Our results show that layered halide ordering induces strongly anisotropic defect diffusion: migration proceeds readily along the layers, whereas diffusion across them is strongly suppressed. For Cs defects, this anisotropy originates from directional lattice strain and the associated octahedral tilting, whereas halide migration is governed by an interplay between strain and preferential local halide bonding configurations.
Migration of halogen vacancies is one of the primary sources of phase segregation and material degradation in lead-halide perovskites. Here we use first principles density functional theory to compare migration energy barriers and paths of bromine vacancies in the bulk and at a (001) surface of cubic CsPbBr$_3$. Our calculations indicate that surfaces might facilitate bromine vacancy migration in these perovskites, due to their soft structure that allows for bond lengths variations larger than in the bulk. We calculate the migration energy for axial-to-axial bromine vacancy migration at the su…
Inorganic lead halide perovskites are promising candidates for optoelectronic applications, due to their bandgap tunability, high photoluminescence quantum yield, and narrow emission line widths. In particular, they offer the possibility to vary the bandgap as a function of the halide composition and dimension/shape of the crystals at the nanoscale. Here we present an aberration-corrected scanning transmission microscopy (STEM) study of extended nanosheets of CsPbBr3 directly demonstrating their orthorhombic crystal structure and their lateral termination with Cs-Br planes. The bandgaps from i…
We explore the interface properties of perovskite heterostructure CsPbBr$_3$/CsPbI$_3$ through first-principles calculations. The structural interface is formed by the bonding of Cs-Br and Cs-I with bond length of $\sim$4.106 and 3.922 Å. The upshift of Goldsmith tolerance factor in the range $0.8<t<1$ from $t<0.8$ is revealed for the bi-layer interface, from bulk, reflecting the structural rearrangement from anisotropy to isotropy in confinement. The band gap arises mainly due to the energy difference of I-5p orbital than that of Br-4p at the valence band and Pb-6p at the conduction band. Hea…
We consider the Br vacancy in CsPbBr3 as a prototype for the impact of structural dynamics on defect energetics in halide perovskites (HaPs). Using first-principles molecular dynamics based on density functional theory, we find that the static picture of defect energetics breaks down; the energy of the Br vacancy level is found to be intrinsically dynamic, oscillating by as much as 1 eV on the ps time scale at room temperature. These significant energy fluctuations are correlated with the distance between the neighboring Pb atoms across the vacancy and with the electrostatic potential at these…
Lead-halide perovskite (LHP) semiconductors are emergent optoelectronic materials with outstanding transport properties which are not yet fully understood. We find signatures of large polaron formation in the electronic structure of the inorganic LHP CsPbBr$_3$ by means of angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental valence band dispersion shows a hole effective mass $0.26\pm0.02\,\,m_e$, 50% heavier than the bare mass $m_0 =0.17 m_e$ predicted by density functional theory. Calculations of electron-phonon coupling indicate that phonon dressing of the carriers mainly occurs via …
Perovskite photovoltaic ABX$_3$ systems are being studied due to their high energy-conversion efficiencies with current emphasis placed on pure inorganic systems. In this work, synchrotron single-crystal diffraction measurements combined with second harmonic generation measurements reveal the absence of inversion symmetry below room temperature in CsPbBr$_3$. Local structural analysis by pair distribution function and X-ray absorption fine structure methods are performed to ascertain the local ordering, atomic pair correlations, and phase evolution in a broad range of temperatures. The current…

The lead halide perovskites demonstrate huge potential for optoelectronic applications, high energy radiation detectors, light emitting devices and solar energy harvesting. Those materials exhibit strong spin-orbit coupling enabling efficient optical orientation of carrier spins in perovskite-based devices with performance controlled by a magnetic field. Perovskites are promising for spintronics due to substantial bulk and structure inversion asymmetry, however, their spin properties are not studied in detail. Here we show that elaborated time-resolved spectroscopy involving strong magnetic fi…
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are currently emerging as one of the most interesting solution processed semiconductors since they possess high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and colour tunability through anion exchange reactions or quantum confinement. Here, we show efficient solar cells based on mixed halide (CsPbBrI2) NCs obtained via anion exchange reactions in ambient conditions. We performed anion exchange reactions in concentrated NC solutions with I-, thus inducing a PL red-shift up to 676 nm, and obtaining a high PLQY in film (65%). Solar cell devices operating in t…
Direct comparison between perovskite-structured hybrid organic-inorganic - methyl ammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) and all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3), allows identifying possible fundamental differences in their structural, thermal and electronic characteristics. Both materials possess a similar direct optical band-gap, but CsPbBr3 demonstrates a higher thermal stability than MAPbBr3. In order to compare device properties we fabricated solar cells, with similarly synthesized MAPbBr3 or CsPbBr3, over mesoporous titania scaffolds. Both cell types demonstrated comparable photovoltaic …
All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) show potential in optoelectronic devices, though their stability and efficiency have yet to improve. In this work, we explore the effect of bivalent metal site doping on the optoelectronic properties of CsPbX$_3$ (X = Br, Cl) perovskite NCs. First, the Pb$^{2+}$ ions in pristine CsPbBr$_3$ NC are partially substituted by Mn$^{2+}$ ions, and the alkaline earth metal strontium is then doped on both pristine and Mn$^{2+}$-substituted particles. The structural and photophysical properties of the pristine and the three doped NC variants have b…

Hybrid lead-halide perovskites have emerged as an excellent class of photovoltaic materials. Recent reports suggest that the organic molecular cation is responsible for local polar fluctuations that inhibit carrier recombination. We combine low frequency Raman scattering with first-principles molecular dynamics (MD) to study the fundamental nature of these local polar fluctuations. Our observations of a strong central peak in both hybrid (CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$) and all-inorganic (CsPbBr$_3$) lead-halide perovskites show that anharmonic, local polar fluctuations are intrinsic to the general lead…
Structural phase transitions as a function of temperature dictate the structure--functionality relationships in many technologically important materials. Harmonic Hamiltonians have proven successful in predicting the vibrational properties of many materials. However, they are inadequate for modeling structural phase transitions in crystals with potential energy surfaces that are either strongly anharmonic or no\ n-convex with respect to collective atomic displacements or homogeneous strains. In this paper we develop a framework to express highly anharmonic first-principles potential energy sur…
Using nanoprobe X-ray diffraction microscopy, we investigate the relationship between residual strains from crystal growth in CsPbBr$_3$ thin film crystals, their stability, and local bandgap. We find that out-of-plane compressive strain that arises from cooldown from crystallization is detrimental to material stability under X-ray irradiation. We also find that the optical photoluminescence red shifts as a result of the out-of-plane compressive strain. The sensitivity of bandgap to strain suggests possible applications such as stress-sensitive sensors. Mosaicity, the formation of small misori…
Dark ground state exciton in semiconductor nanocrystals has been a subject of much interest due to its long lifetime attractive for applications requiring long-lived electronic or spin states. Significant effort has been made recently to explore and access the dark exciton level in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals, which are emerging as a superior source of photons and charges compared to other existing semiconductor nanocrystals. However, the direct observation of long-lived photoluminescence from dark exciton has remained elusive in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals. Here, we report t…
In this letter, we investigated the Rashba effect of the CsPbBr$_3$ bilayers under the external electric field (EEF), with the first-principles calculations. For the PbBr$_2$ terminated bilayer, we found that only electrons experience the Rashba splitting under EEF, while holes do not. Such n-type Rashba effect can be ascribed to the surface relaxation effect that reverse the position of the top valence bands. The n-type Rashba parameter can be tuned monotonically to the maximum of 0.88 eV $Å$ at EEF of 1.35 V/nm at which the sequence of top valence bands recover to the bulk style. During this…
Exciton polaritons, hybrid quasiparticles with part-light part-matter nature in semiconductor microcavities, are extensively investigated for striking phenomena such as polariton condensation and quantum emulation. These phenomena have recently been discovered in emerging lead halide perovskites at elevated temperatures up to room temperature. For advancing these discoveries into practical applications, one critical requirement is the realization of electrically pumped exciton-polaritons. However, electrically pumped polariton light-emitting devices with perovskites have not yet been achieved …
Despite their puzzling vibrational characteristics that include strong signatures of anharmonicity and thermal disorder already around room temperature, halide perovskites exhibit favorable optoelectronic properties for applications in photovoltaics and beyond. Whether these vibrational properties are advantageous or detrimental to their optoelectronic properties remains, however, an important open question. Here, this issue is addressed by investigation of the {finite-temperature optoelectronic properties} in the prototypical cubic CsPbBr$_3$, using first-principles molecular dynamics based o…
Strong deviations in the finite temperature atomic structure of halide perovskites from their average geometry can have profound impacts on optoelectronic and other device-relevant properties. Detailed mechanistic understandings of these structural fluctuations and their consequences remain, however, limited by the experimental and theoretical challenges involved in characterizing strongly anharmonic vibrational characteristics and their impact on other properties. We overcome some of these challenges by a theoretical characterization of the vibrational interactions that occur among the atoms …
We study the effects of hydrostatic pressure in the range 0.0--2.0 GPa on anion mobility in the orthorhombic $Pnma$ phase of CsPbBr$_{3}$. Using density functional theory and the climbing nudged elastic band method, we calculate the transition states and activation energies for anions to migrate both within and between neighbouring PbBr$_{3}$ octahedra. The results of those calculations are used as input to a kinetic model for anion migration, which we solve in the steady state to determine the anion mobility tensor as a function of applied pressure. We find that the response of the mobility t…
Under continuous light illumination, it is known that localized domains with segregated halide compositions form in semiconducting mixed-halide perovskites, thus severely limiting their optoelectronic applications due to the negative changes in bandgap energies and charge-carrier characteristics. Here we deposit mixed-halide perovskite CsPbBr1.2I1.8 nanocrystals onto an indium tin oxide substrate, whose temperature can be rapidly changed by ~10 degree in a few seconds by applying or removing an external voltage. Such a sudden temperature change induces a temporary transition of CsPbBr1.2I1.8 n…
The acoustic phonons in the organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been reported to have anomalously short lifetimes over a large part of the Brillouin zone. The resulting shortened mean free paths of the phonons have been implicated as the origin of the low thermal conductivity. We apply neutron spectroscopy to show that the same acoustic phonon energy linewidth broadening (corresponding to shortened lifetimes) occurs in the fully inorganic CsPbBr$_{3}$ by comparing the results on the organic-inorganic CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbCl$_{3}$. We investigate the critical dynamics near the three zon…
The development of next generation perovskite-based optoelectronic devices relies critically on the understanding of the interaction between charge carriers and the polar lattice in out-of-equilibrium conditions. While it has become increasingly evident for CsPbBr3 perovskites that the Pb-Br framework flexibility plays a key role in their light-activated functionality, the corresponding local structural rearrangement has not yet been unambiguously identified. In this work, we demonstrate that the photoinduced lattice changes in the system are due to a specific polaronic distortion, associated …
Oxygen octahedral distortions including tilts/rotations, deformations and off-centering in (layered) perovskites play the key role in their numerous functional properties. At the polar-centrosymmetric phase boundary in bi-layered perovskite Ca3-xSrxTi2O7 with x~1, we found the presence of abundant topological Z8 vortex-antivortex pairs, associated with four oxygen octahedral tilts at domains and another four different oxygen octahedral tilts at domain boundaries. Our discovery opens a new revenue to unveil topological defects associated with various types of oxygen octahedral distortions.
We develop techniques to study the temperature dependent localization, thermalization, and the effects of phonon scattering on the excitons in halide perovskites from the analysis of the emission spectra. The excitonic Urbach edge, when inferred from the low energy tails of the temperature dependent luminescence spectra, is shown to be sensitive to the electron distribution and thermalization. A method to observe the Urbach focus is devised for halide perovskites where the temperature dependence of the excitonic gap is anomalous. The value of the zero-point bandgap renormalization is inferred …
We have investigated nonlinear refraction in all-inorganic halide perovskites, the CsPbBr$_3$ and CsPbBr$_{1.5}$I$_{1.5}$ nanosheet and quantum dot colloids in toluene, by a novel beam deflection technique using near-resonant continuous wave lasers. The nonlinear refraction and its time-evolution measured here have originated from thermal lensing effect. Nonlinear behaviour of heat transport in terms of intensity dependent thermal diffusion rate has been observed. Effects of convective heat flow have been measured at high intensities. Quantum dots have higher nonlinear refraction as compared t…

The room temperature X-ray diffraction patterns reveal that Ba1/4Sr3/4MnO3 crystallizes into hexagonal crystal structure with space group P63/mmc as confirmed by Rietveld refinement. The scanning electron micrographs of Ba1/4Sr3/4MnO3 reveal uniform crystallite size of the samples. Effect of crystallite size on lattice strain and crystal structure has been studied using Rietveld refinement and Williamson-Hall plot, respectively. The structural…
Asceding interest of the scientific community in layered hybrid halide perovskites (LHHPs) as materials for innovative photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications led to unprecedented expansion of this family of compounds, reaching now several hundred refined structures. Despite the unique structural diversity of LHHPs, traditional approaches of describing their structures, such as dividing into Dion-Jacobson (DJ) or Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) phases for mostt structures are ambiguous and unquantifiable. Here, we introduced a quantitative layer shift factor (LSF) for a univocal classification and…
The possibility to segregate cobalt and iron in a single perovskite, at a nanoscale in the form of layers has been investigated, using sol gel technic synthesis. Quite remarkably, it is shown that such a nanoscale ordering, which can only be detected by a combined HAADF-STEM and EELS study, has a significant impact upon the magnetic properties of this SmFe0.5Co0.5O3 oxide. This suggests that careful nanoscale characterization of oxides will be necessary in the future before proceeding to a viable interpretation of their physical properties, at least in the field of magnetism.
