Excitonic/electronic coupling and cooperative interactions in self-assembled lead halide perovskite nanocrystals were reported to give rise to a collective low energy emission peak with accelerated dynamics. Here we report that similar spectroscopic features could appear as a result of the nanocrystal reactivity within the self-assembled superlattices. This is demonstrated by using CsPbBr3 nanocrystal superlattices under room temperature and cryogenic micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy. It is shown that keeping such structures under vacuum, a gradual contraction of the superlattices and subsequent coalescence of the nanocrystals occurs over several days. As a result, a narrow, low energy emission peak is observed at 4 K with a concomitant shortening of the photoluminescence lifetime due to the energy transfer between nanocrystals. When exposed to air, self-assembled CsPbBr3 nanocrystals develop bulk-like CsPbBr3 particles on top of the superlattices. At 4 K, these particles produce a distribution of narrow, low energy emission peaks with short lifetimes and excitation fluence-dependent, oscillatory decays, resembling the features of superfluorescence. Overall, the reactivity of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals dramatically alters the emission of their assemblies, which should not be overlooked when studying collective optoelectronic properties nor confused with superfluorescence effects.
Surface-defect passivation is key to achieving high photoluminescence quantum yield in lead halide perovskite nanocrystals. However, in perovskite light-emitting diodes these surface ligands also have to enable balanced charge injection into the nanocrystals to yield high efficiency and operational lifetime. In this respect, alkaline halides have been reported to passivate surface trap states and increase the overall stability of perovskite light emitters. On the one side, the incorporation of alkaline ions into the lead halide perovskite crystal structure is considered to counterbalance catio…
Previous theoretical calculations show azetidinium has the right radial size to form a 3D perovskite with lead halides [1], and has been shown to impart, as the A-site cation of ABX3 unit, beneficial properties to ferroelectric perovskites [2]. However, there has been very limited research into its use as the cation in lead halide perovskites to date. In this communication we report the synthesis and characterization of azetidinium-based lead mixed halide perovskite colloidal nanocrystals. The mixed halide system is iodine and chlorine unlike other reported nanocrystals in the literature where…
Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are currently emerging as one of the most interesting solution processed semiconductors since they possess high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and colour tunability through anion exchange reactions or quantum confinement. Here, we show efficient solar cells based on mixed halide (CsPbBrI2) NCs obtained via anion exchange reactions in ambient conditions. We performed anion exchange reactions in concentrated NC solutions with I-, thus inducing a PL red-shift up to 676 nm, and obtaining a high PLQY in film (65%). Solar cell devices operating in t…
Single cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals show strong photoluminescence blinking, with on- and off- dwelling times following power-law distributions. We investigate the memory effect in the photoluminescence blinking of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and find positive correlations for successive on-times and successive off-times. This memory effect is not sensitive to the nature of the surface capping ligand and the embedding polymer. These observations suggest that photoluminescence intermittency and its memory are mainly controlled by intrinsic traps in the nanocrystals. These findings …
The optoelectric applications, light emitters and photovoltaics, with organometallic halide perovskite materials have been decided by dynamics of charge carriers in grains on the polycrystalline thin films. Especially, polar solvent vapour recrystallizes perovskites and changes their grain sizes. In this paper, various polar solvents were evaluated with density functional theory calculation. And a stociometric treatment with these solvents which enhanced photoluminescence intensity was established. The properties of solvents which caused dramatic photoluminescence enhancement and quantum confi…
Lead halide perovskites are a remarkable class of materials that have emerged over the past decade as being suitable for application in a broad range of devices, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, transistors, and memory devices, among others. While they are often solution-processed semiconductors deposited at low temperatures, perovskites exhibit properties one would only expect from highly pure inorganic crystals that are grown at high temperatures. This unique phenomenon has resulted in fast-paced progress toward record device performance; unfortunately, the basic science b…
Although the structural phase transitions in single-crystal hybrid methyl-ammonium (MA) lead halide perovskites (MAPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I) are common phenomena, they have never been observed in the corresponding nanocrystals. Here we demonstrate that two-photon-excited photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy is capable of monitoring the structural phase transitions in MAPbX3 nanocrystals because nonlinear susceptibilities govern the light absorption rates. We provide experimental evidence that the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition in a single layer of 20-nm-sized 3D MAPbBr3 nanoc…
Dark ground state exciton in semiconductor nanocrystals has been a subject of much interest due to its long lifetime attractive for applications requiring long-lived electronic or spin states. Significant effort has been made recently to explore and access the dark exciton level in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals, which are emerging as a superior source of photons and charges compared to other existing semiconductor nanocrystals. However, the direct observation of long-lived photoluminescence from dark exciton has remained elusive in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals. Here, we report t…
Lead-halide perovskites have been attracting attention for potential use in solid-state lighting. Following the footsteps of solar cells, the field of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) has been growing rapidly. Their application prospects in lighting, however, remain still uncertain due to a variety of shortcomings in device performance including their limited levels of luminous efficiency achievable thus far. Here we show high-efficiency PeLEDs based on colloidal perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) synthesized at room temperature possessing dominant first-order excitonic radiation (enabli…
Herein, we report on the improvement of structural quality and enhancement of photoluminescence (PL) emission for an optimally N doped nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) film. Pure and N doped nanocrystalline diamond films are synthesized on Si by hot filament chemical vapour deposition using NH3:CH4:H2 at different nominal N/C ratios viz. 0, 0.13, 0.35, 0.50 and 0.75 in feedstock. X ray diffraction analysis reveal a systematic initial increase and then a decrease in crystallite size with N/C ratio in feedstock. Further, a monotonic increase in Raman line width and peak position of diamond band ind…
Halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have shown impressive advances, exhibiting optical properties that outpace conventional semiconductor NCs, such as near-unity quantum yields and ultrafast radiative decay rates. Nevertheless, the NCs suffer even more from stability problems at ambient conditions and due to moisture than their bulk counterparts. Herein, we report a strategy of employing polymer micelles as nanoreactors for the synthesis of methylammonium lead trihalide perovskite NCs. Encapsulated by this polymer shell, the NCs display strong stability against water degradation and halide io…
The dynamical and static Rashba effects in hybrid methylammonium (MA) lead halide perovskites have recently been theoretically predicted. However, only the static effect was experimentally confirmed so far. Here we report on the dynamical Rashba effect observed using snapshot transient absorption spectral imaging with 400 nm pumping for a fully encapsulated film of 20-nm-sized 3D MAPbBr3 nanocrystals. The effect causes a 240 meV splitting of the lowest-energy absorption bleaching band, initially appearing over sub-ps timescale and progressively stabilizing to 60 meV during 500 ps. The integrat…
Transient microscopy is of vital importance in understanding the dynamics of optical excited states in optoelectronic materials, as it allows for a direct visualization of the movement of energy carriers in space and time. Important information on the influence of trap-states can be obtained using this technique, typically observed as a slow-down of the energy transport as carriers are trapped at defect sites. To date, however, studies of the trap-state dynamics have been mostly limited to phenomenological descriptions of the early time-dynamics. In this report, we show how long-acquisition-ti…
We study the nature of photo-excited charge carriers in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal thin films by ultrafast optical pump - THz probe spectroscopy. We observe a deviation from a pure Drude dispersion of the THz dielectric response that is ascribed to the polaronic nature of carriers; a transient blueshift of observed phonon frequencies is indicative of the coupling between photogenerated charges and stretching-bending modes of the deformed inorganic sublattice, as confirmed by DFT calculations.
Mixed-halide based hybrid perovskite semiconductors have attracted tremendous attention as a promising candidate for high efficient photovoltaic and light-emitting devices. However, these advanced perovskite materials may undergo phase segregation under light illumination due to halide ion migration, affecting their optoelectronic properties. Here, we report photo-excitation induced phase segregation in triple-cation mixed-halide perovskite films that yields to red-shift in photoluminescence response. We demonstrate that photo-excitation induced halide ion migration leads to the formation of s…
Contrary to the common belief that light-induced halide ion segregation in a mixed halide al-loy occurs within the illuminated area, we find that the Br ions released by light diffuse away from the area, which generates a counter-balancing Coulombic force between the anion deficit and surplus region, together resulting in a macro/mesoscopic size anion ring surrounding the center, showing a photoluminescence ring. Upon removing the illumination, the displaced anions return to the illuminated area, and the restoring force leads to a damped ultra-low-frequency oscillatory ion motion, which may be…
Halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have emerged as a promising material for applications ranging from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to solar cells and photodetectors. Still, several issues impede the realization of the nanocrystals' full potential, most notably their susceptibility to degradation from environmental stress. This work demonstrates highly stable perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with quantum yields as high as 95 % by exploiting a ligand-assisted copolymer nanoreactor-based synthesis. The organic ligands thereby serve a dual function by enhancing the uptake of precursors and passivat…
Halide perovskites is a family of semiconductor materials demonstrating prospective properties for optical cooling owing to efficient luminescence at room temperature and strong electron-phonon interaction. On the other hand, perovskite based nanophotonic designs would allow for efficient optical cooling at nanoscale. Here we propose a novel strategy for enhancement of optical cooling at nanoscale based on optical resonances engineering in halide perovskite nanoparticles. Namely, photoluminescence up-conversion efficiency in a nanoparticle is optimized via excitation of Mie-resonances both at …
One photon up-conversion photoluminescence is an optical phenomenon whereby the thermal energy of a fluorescent material increases the energy of an emitted photon compared with the energy of the photon that was absorbed. When this occurs with near unity efficiency, the emitting material undergoes a net decrease in temperature--so called optical cooling. Because the up-conversion mechanism is thermally activated, the yield of up-converted photoluminescence is also a reporter of the temperature of the emitter. Taking advantage of this optical signature, cesium lead trihalide nanocrystals are sho…
Metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have demonstrated excellent optoelectronic properties for light-emitting applications. Isovalent doping with various metals (M2+) can be used to tailor and enhance their light emission. Although crucial to maximize performance, an understanding of the universal working mechanism for such doping is still missing. Here, we directly compare the optical properties of nanocrystals containing the most commonly employed dopants, fabricated under identical synthesis conditions. We show for the first time unambiguously and supported by first principles calculations …
Halide perovskites are a promising optical gain media with high tunability and simple solution synthesis. In this study, two gain regimes, namely amplified spontaneous emission and random lasing, are demonstrated in same MAPbBr$_3$ halide perovskite single crystal. For this, photoluminescence is measured at a temperature of 4 K with pulsed femtosecond pumping by UV light with a 80 MHz repetition rate. Random lasing is observed in areas of the sample where a random resonator was formed due to cracks and crystal imperfections. In more homogeneous regions of the sample, the dominant regime is amp…
Perovskite nanocrystal light-emitting diodes (LEDs) employing architecture comprising a ZnO nanoparticles electron-transport layer and a conjugated polymer hole-transport layer have been fabricated. The obtained LEDs demonstrate a maximum external-quantum-efficiency of 6.04%, luminance of 12998 Cd/m2 and stable electroluminescence at 519 nm. Importantly, such high efficiency and brightness have been achieved by employing solution processed transport layers, formamidinium lead bromide nanocrystals (CH(NH2)2PbBr3 NCs) synthesized at room-temperature and in air without the use of a Schlenk line, …
Halide perovskites have indisputably exceptional optical and electronic properties, which are attractive for next-generation optoelectronic device technologies. We report on a reversible photoluminescence (PL) peak in iodide-based organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials under a two-photon absorption (TPA) process, while tuning the excitation wavelength. This phenomenon occurs when the incoming femtosecond (fs) laser photon energy is higher than a threshold energy. Intriguingly, this phenomenon also occurs in other kinds of iodide perovskite materials. Moreover, two more shorter wave…
Metal-halide perovskites are rapidly emerging as solution-processable optical materials for light emitting applications. Here we adopt a plasmonic metamaterial approach to enhance photoluminescence emission and extraction of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) thin films, based on the Purcell effect. We show that hybridization of the active metal-halide film with resonant nanoscale sized slits carved into a gold film can yield more than one order of magnitude enhancement of luminescence intensity, and nearly threefold reduction of luminescence lifetime. This shows the effectiveness of resonant…
Meta-optics based on optically-resonant dielectric nanostructures is a rapidly developing research field with many potential applications. Halide perovskite metasurfaces emerged recently as a novel platform for meta-optics, and they offer unique opportunities for control of light in optoelectronic devices. Here we employ the generalized Kerker conditions to overlap electric and magnetic Mie resonances in each meta-atom of MAPbBr3 perovskite metasurface and demonstrate broadband suppression of reflection down to 4%. We reveal also that metasurface nanostructuring is also beneficial for the enha…
