Fully-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have shown to exhibit outstanding optical properties such as wide spectral tunability, high quantum yield, high oscillator strength as well as blinking-free single photon emission and low spectral diffusion. Here, we report measurements of the coherent and incoherent exciton dynamics on the 100 fs to 10 ns timescale, determining dephasing and density decay rates in these NCs. The experiments are performed on CsPbBr$_{2}$Cl NCs using transient resonant three-pulse four-wave mixing (FWM) in heterodyne detection at temperatures ranging from 5 K to 50 K. We found a low-temperature exciton dephasing time of 24.5$\pm$1.0 ps, inferred from the decay of the photon-echo amplitude at 5 K, corresponding to a homogeneous linewidth (FWHM) of 54$\pm$5 μeV. Furthermore, oscillations in the photon-echo signal on a picosecond timescale are observed and attributed to coherent coupling of the exciton to a quantized phonon mode with 3.45 meV energy.
Carrier spins in semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for quantum information processing. Using a combination of time-resolved Faraday rotation and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we demonstrate optical spin polarization and coherent spin precession in colloidal CsPbBr3 nanocrystals that persists up to room temperature. By suppressing the influence of inhomogeneous hyperfine fields with a small applied magnetic field, we demonstrate inhomogeneous hole transverse spin-dephasing times (T2*) that approach the nanocrystal photoluminescence lifetime, such that nearly all emitted ph…
The instability of metal halide perovskites upon exposure to moisture or heat strongly hampers their applications in optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the large-yield synthesis of highly water-resistant total-inorganic green luminescent CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5 core/shell heteronanocrystals (HNCs) by developing an in situ phase transition approach. It is implemented via water-driven phase transition of the original monoclinic CsPbBr3 nanocrystal and the resultant tetragonal CsPb2Br5 nanoshell has small lattice mismatch with the CsPbBr3 core, which ensures formation of an epitaxial interface for …
Hot electrons play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of photon-to-current conversion or photocatalytic reactions. In semiconductor nanocrystals, energetic hot electrons capable of photoemission can be generated via the upconversion process involving the dopant-originated intermediate state, currently known only in Mn-doped cadmium chalcogenide quantum dots. Here, we report that Mn-doped CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are an excellent platform for generating hot electrons via upconversion that can benefit from various desirable exciton properties and the structural diversity of metal halide pero…
Biexcitons are a manifestation of many-body excitonic interactions crucial for quantum information and quantum computation in the construction of coherent combinations of quantum states. However, due to their small binding energy and low transition efficiency, most biexcitons in conventional semiconductors exist either at cryogenic temperature or under femtosecond pulse laser excitation. Here we demonstrate room temperature, continuous wave driven biexciton states in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals through coupling with a plasmonic nanogap. The room temperature CsPbBr3 biexciton excitation flu…
In semiconductors, exciton or charge carrier diffusivity is typically described as an inherent material property. Here, we show that the transport of excitons (i.e., bound electron-hole pairs) in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) depends markedly on how recently those NCs were occupied by a previous exciton. Using fluence- and repetition-rate-dependent transient photoluminescence microscopy, we visualize the effect of excitation frequency on exciton transport in CsPbBr3 NC solids. Surprisingly, we observe a striking dependence of the apparent exciton diffusivity on excitation laser power t…
Under continuous light illumination, it is known that localized domains with segregated halide compositions form in semiconducting mixed-halide perovskites, thus severely limiting their optoelectronic applications due to the negative changes in bandgap energies and charge-carrier characteristics. Here we deposit mixed-halide perovskite CsPbBr1.2I1.8 nanocrystals onto an indium tin oxide substrate, whose temperature can be rapidly changed by ~10 degree in a few seconds by applying or removing an external voltage. Such a sudden temperature change induces a temporary transition of CsPbBr1.2I1.8 n…
We calculate the shift in emission frequency of the trion and biexciton (relative to that of the single exciton) for nanocrystals (NCs) of inorganic perovskites CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3. The calculations use an envelope-function k.p model combined with self-consistent Hartree-Fock and a treatment of the intercarrier correlation energy in the lowest (second) order of many-body perturbation theory. The carriers in the trion and biexciton are assumed to have relaxed nonradiatively to the ground state at the band edge before emission occurs. The theoretical trion shifts for both CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 are f…
Single cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals show strong photoluminescence blinking, with on- and off- dwelling times following power-law distributions. We investigate the memory effect in the photoluminescence blinking of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and find positive correlations for successive on-times and successive off-times. This memory effect is not sensitive to the nature of the surface capping ligand and the embedding polymer. These observations suggest that photoluminescence intermittency and its memory are mainly controlled by intrinsic traps in the nanocrystals. These findings …
Outstanding optoelectronic properties and a facile synthesis render halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) a promising material for nanostructure-based devices. However, the commercialization is hindered mainly by the lack of NC stability under ambient conditions and inefficient charge carrier injection. Here, we investigate solutions to both problems, employing methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr_3) NCs encapsulated in diblock copolymer core-shell micelles of tunable size. We confirm that the shell does not prohibit energy transfer, as FRET efficiencies between these NCs and 2D CsPbBr_3 nanopla…
Recently lead halide nanocrystals (quantum dots) have been reported with potential for photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications due to their excellent luminescent properties. Herein excitonic photoluminescence (PL) excited by two-photon absorption in perovskite CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) have been studied across a broad temperature range from 80K to 380K. Two-photon absorption has been investigated with absorption coefficient up to 0.085 cm/GW at room temperature. Moreover, the photoluminescence excited by two-photon absorption shows a linear blue-shift (0.25meV/K) below temperature of ~22…
The dephasing time of the lowest bright exciton in CdSe/ZnS wurtzite quantum dots is measured from 5 K to 170 K and compared with density dynamics within the exciton fine structure using a sensitive three-beam four-wave-mixing technique unaffected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing of 109 ps at 5 K, much faster than the ~10 ns exciton radiative lifetime. The zero-phonon line dephasing is explained by phonon-assisted spin-flip from the lowest bright state to dark exciton states. This is…
The spin physics of perovskite nanocrystals with confined electrons or holes is attracting increasing attention, both for fundamental studies and spintronic applications. Here, stable CsPb(Cl$_{0.5}$Br$_{0.5}$)$_3$ lead halide perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a fluorophosphate glass matrix are studied by time-resolved optical spectroscopy to unravel the coherent spin dynamics of holes and their interaction with nuclear spins of the $^{207}$Pb isotope. We demonstrate the spin mode locking effect provided by the synchronization of the Larmor precession of single hole spins in each nanocrystal…
Time-resolved Faraday rotation is used to study both transverse and longitudinal spin relaxation in chemically-synthesized CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) 22-80 Angstroms in diameter. The precession of optically-injected spins in a transverse magnetic field occurs at distinct frequencies whose assignment to electron and exciton spins is developed through systematic studies of the size-dependence and theoretical calculations. It is shown that the transverse spin lifetime is limited by inhomogeneous dephasing to a degree that cannot be accounted for by the NC size distribution alone. Longitudinal spin r…
We measured the intrinsic ground-state exciton dephasing and population dynamics in colloidal quasi two-dimensional (2D) CdSe nanoplatelets at low temperature (5-50K) using transient resonant four-wave mixing in heterodyne detection. Our results indicate that below 20K the exciton dephasing is lifetime limited, with the exciton population lifetime being as fast as 1ps. This is consistent with an exciton lifetime given by a fast radiative decay due to the large in-plane coherence area of the exciton center-of-mass motion in these quasi 2D systems compared to spherical nanocrystals.
Coherent manipulation of the exciton wave function in a single semiconductor colloidal nanocrystal (NC) has been actively pursued in the past decades without any success, mainly due to the bothersome existences of the spectral diffusion and the photoluminescence (PL) blinking effects. Such optical deficiencies can be naturally avoided in the newly-developed colloidal NCs of perovskite CsPbI3, leading to the PL spectrum with a stable intensity at the single-particle level. Meanwhile, from the first-order photon correlation measurement, a PL linewidth smaller than 20 μeV is estimated for the emi…
We discuss a variety of many-body approaches, within effective-mass and $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ envelope-function formalisms, for calculating correlated single excitons in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) to all orders in the electron-hole Coulomb interaction. These approaches are applied to NCs of the lead-halide perovskite CsPbBr$_{3}$, which typically present excitons in intermediate confinement with physical observables often strongly renormalized by correlation (e.g., radiative decay rate enhanced by a factor of about 7 relative to a mean-field approach, for a NC of edge length 11 nm)…
We study the nature of photo-excited charge carriers in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal thin films by ultrafast optical pump - THz probe spectroscopy. We observe a deviation from a pure Drude dispersion of the THz dielectric response that is ascribed to the polaronic nature of carriers; a transient blueshift of observed phonon frequencies is indicative of the coupling between photogenerated charges and stretching-bending modes of the deformed inorganic sublattice, as confirmed by DFT calculations.
The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nano-lasers. Whilst non-resonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-sta…
The one-photon absorption cross section of nanocrystals (NCs) of the inorganic perovskite CsPbBr$_{3}$ is studied theoretically using a multiband $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ envelope-function model combined with a treatment of intercarrier correlation by many-body perturbation theory. A confined exciton is described first within the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation, and correlation between the electron and hole is then included in leading order by computing the first-order vertex correction to the electron-photon interaction. The vertex correction is found to give an enhancement of the near-thr…
Understanding the origin of electron-phonon coupling in lead-halide perovskites (LHP) is key to interpreting and leveraging their optical and electronic properties. Here we perform femtosecond-resolved, optical-pump, electron-diffraction-probe measurements to quantify the lattice reorganization occurring as a result of photoexcitation in LHP nanocrystals. Photoexcitation is found to drive a reduction in lead-halide octahedra tilts and distortions in the lattice, a result of deformation potential coupling to low energy optical phonons. Our results indicate particularly strong coupling in FAPbBr…

The easily tunable emission of halide perovskite nanocrystals throughout the visible spectrum makes them an extremely promising material for light-emitting applications. Whereas high quantum yields and long-term colloidal stability have already been achieved for nanocrystals emitting in the red and green spectral range, the blue region currently lags behind, with low quantum yields, broad emission profiles and insufficient colloidal stability. In this work, we present a facile synthetic approach for obtaining two-dimensional CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets with monolayer-precise control over their thick…
The interest in perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) such as CsPbBr$_3$ for quantum applications is rapidly raising, as it has been demonstrated that they can behave as very efficient single photon emitters. The main problem to tackle in this context is their photo-stability under optical excitation. In this article, we present a full analysis of the optical and quantum properties of highly efficient perovskite nanocubes synthesized with an established method, which is used for the first time to produce quantum emitters, and is shown to ensure an increased photostability. These emitters exhibit reduc…
