Carrier spins in semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for quantum information processing. Using a combination of time-resolved Faraday rotation and photoluminescence spectroscopies, we demonstrate optical spin polarization and coherent spin precession in colloidal CsPbBr3 nanocrystals that persists up to room temperature. By suppressing the influence of inhomogeneous hyperfine fields with a small applied magnetic field, we demonstrate inhomogeneous hole transverse spin-dephasing times (T2*) that approach the nanocrystal photoluminescence lifetime, such that nearly all emitted photons derive from coherent hole spins. Thermally activated LO phonons drive additional spin dephasing at elevated temperatures, but coherent spin precession is still observed at room temperature. These data reveal several major distinctions between spins in nanocrystalline and bulk CsPbBr3 and open the door for using metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals in spin-based quantum technologies.
We develop the microscopic theory of electron spin dephasing in (110)-grown quantum wells where the electron scattering time is comparable to or exceeds the period of spin precession in the effective magnetic field caused by spin-orbit coupling. Structures with homogeneous and fluctuating Rashba field, which triggers the dephasing of electron spins aligned along the growth direction, are analyzed. We show that the Dresselhaus field, which is always present in zinc-blende-type quantum wells, suppresses the spin dephasing enabling very long spin lifetime of conduction electrons. The dependence o…
We report a systematic study of coherent spin precession and spin dephasing in electron-doped monolayer MoS$_2$. Using time-resolved Kerr rotation spectroscopy and applied in-plane magnetic fields, a nanosecond-timescale Larmor spin precession signal commensurate with $g$-factor $|g_0|\simeq 1.86$ is observed in several different MoS$_2$ samples grown by chemical vapor deposition. The dephasing rate of this oscillatory signal increases linearly with magnetic field, suggesting that the coherence arises from a sub-ensemble of localized electron spins having an inhomogeneously-broadened distribut…
The dephasing time of the lowest bright exciton in CdSe/ZnS wurtzite quantum dots is measured from 5 K to 170 K and compared with density dynamics within the exciton fine structure using a sensitive three-beam four-wave-mixing technique unaffected by spectral diffusion. Pure dephasing via acoustic phonons dominates the initial dynamics, followed by an exponential zero-phonon line dephasing of 109 ps at 5 K, much faster than the ~10 ns exciton radiative lifetime. The zero-phonon line dephasing is explained by phonon-assisted spin-flip from the lowest bright state to dark exciton states. This is…
The spin physics of perovskite nanocrystals with confined electrons or holes is attracting increasing attention, both for fundamental studies and spintronic applications. Here, stable CsPb(Cl$_{0.5}$Br$_{0.5}$)$_3$ lead halide perovskite nanocrystals embedded in a fluorophosphate glass matrix are studied by time-resolved optical spectroscopy to unravel the coherent spin dynamics of holes and their interaction with nuclear spins of the $^{207}$Pb isotope. We demonstrate the spin mode locking effect provided by the synchronization of the Larmor precession of single hole spins in each nanocrystal…
Drift-diffusion theory - which fully describes charge transport in semiconductors - is also universally used to model transport of spin-polarized electrons in the presence of longitudinal electric fields. By transforming spin transit time into spin orientation with precession (a technique called the "Larmor clock") in current-sensing vertical-transport intrinsic Si devices, we show that spin diffusion (and concomitant spin dephasing) can be greatly enhanced with respect to charge diffusion, in direct contrast to predictions of spin Coulomb-drag diffusion suppression.
We develop a microscopic theory of spin relaxation of a two-dimensional electron gas in quantum wells with anisotropic electron scattering. Both precessional and collision-dominated regimes of spin dynamics are studied. It is shown that, in quantum wells with noncentrosymmetric scatterers, the in-plane and out-of-plane spin components are coupled: spin dephasing of carriers initially polarized along the quantum well normal leads to the emergence of an in-plane spin component even in the case of isotropic spin-orbit splitting. In the collision-dominated regime, the spin-relaxation-rate tensor i…
Advances in opto-electronics require the development of materials with novel and engineered characteristics. A class of materials that has garnered tremendous interest is metal-halide perovskites, stimulated by meteoric increases in photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells. In addition, recent advances have applied perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) in light-emitting devices. It was discovered recently that, for cesium lead-halide perovskite NCs, their unusually efficient light-emission may be due to a unique excitonic fine-structure composed of three bright triplet states that minimally…
Evidence of spin precession and dephasing ("Hanle effect") induced by an external magnetic field is the only unequivocal proof of spin-polarized conduction electron transport in semiconductor devices. However, when spin dephasing is very strong, Hanle effect in a uniaxial magnetic field can be impossible to measure. Using a Silicon device with lateral injector-detector separation over 2 millimeters, and geometrically-induced dephasing making spin transport completely incoherent, we show experimentally and theoretically that Hanle effect can still be measured using a two-axis magnetic field.
We investigate the spin dynamics of high-mobility two-dimensional electrons in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells grown along the $[001]$ and $[110]$ directions by time-resolved Faraday rotation at low temperatures. In measurements on the $(001)$-grown structures without external magnetic fields, we observe coherent oscillations of the electron spin polarization about the effective spin-orbit field. In non-quantizing magnetic fields applied normal to the sample plane, the cyclotron motion of the electrons rotates the effective spin-orbit field. This rotation leads to fast oscillations in the spin polar…
Based on fully microscopic kinetic spin Bloch equation approach, we show the non-Markovian effect in spin dephasing of heavy holes in $p$-type GaAs quantum wells. The non-Markovian effect manifests itself in spin dephasing when the mean spin precession time is shorter than the momentum relaxation time. The spin dephasing becomes slower when the non-Markovian effect is important. Moreover, quantum spin beats due to the memory effect of the non-Markovian hole-longitudinal optical phonon scattering are predicted.
Multi-subband effect on spin precession and spin dephasing in $n$-type GaAs quantum wells is studied with electron-electron and electron-phonon scattering explicitly included. The effects of temperature, well width and applied electric field (in hot-electron regime) on the spin kinetics are thoroughly investigated. It is shown that due to the strong inter-subband scattering, the spin procession and the spin dephasing rate of electrons in different subbands are almost identical despite the large difference in the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) terms of different subbands. It is also shown that for quant…
Spin precession and dephasing ("Hanle effect") provides an unambiguous means to establish the presence of spin transport in semiconductors. We compare theoretical modeling with experimental data from drift-dominated silicon spin-transport devices, illustrating the non-trivial consequences of employing oblique magnetic fields (due to misalignment or intentional, fixed in-plane field components) to measure the effects of spin precession. Model results are also calculated for Hanle measurements under conditions of diffusion-dominated transport, revealing an expected Hanle peak-widening effect ind…
We review our theoretical investigation on the spin relaxation/dephasing in spin precession and spin diffusion/transport in semiconductor nanostructures based on the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach.
For spin-based quantum computation in semiconductors, dephasing of electron spins by a fluctuating background of nuclear spins is a main obstacle. Here we show that this nuclear background can be precisely controlled in generic quantum dots by periodically exciting electron spins. We demonstrate this universal phenomenon in many-electron GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot ensembles using optical pump-probe spectroscopy. A feedback mechanism between the saturable electron spin polarization and the nuclear system focuses the electron spin precession frequency into discrete spin modes. Employing such contro…
Full electric-field control of spin orientations is one of the key tasks in semiconductor spintronics. We demonstrate that electric field pulses can be utilized for phase-coherent +/- pi spin rotation of optically generated electron spin packets in InGaAs epilayers detected by time-resolved Faraday rotation. Through spin-orbit interaction, the electric-field pulses act as local magnetic field pulses (LMFP). By the temporal control of the LMFP, we can turn on and off electron spin precession and thereby rotate the spin direction into arbitrary orientations in a 2-dimensional plane. Furthermore,…
We examine the quantum spin state of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond at room temperature as it makes a transition from the orbital ground-state (GS) to the orbital excited-state (ES) during non-resonant optical excitation. While the fluorescence read-out of NV-center spins relies on conservation of the longitudinal spin projection during optical excitation, the question of quantum phase preservation has not been examined. Using Ramsey measurements and quantum process tomography, we establish limits on NV center spin decoherence induced during optical excitation. Treating the o…
We inject spin-polarized electrons from an Fe/MgO tunnel barrier contact into n-type Ge(001) substrates with electron densities 2e16 < n < 8e17 cm-3, and electrically detect the resulting spin accumulation using three-terminal Hanle measurements. We observe significant spin accumulation in the Ge up to room temperature. We observe precessional dephasing of the spin accumulation (the Hanle effect) in an applied magnetic field for both forward and reverse bias (spin extraction and injection), and determine spin lifetimes and corresponding diffusion lengths for temperatures of 225 K to 300 K. The…
We report about the dephasing of the spins states in a Garnet film excited by femtosecond laser pulses. It is shown that magneto-optical four-wave-mixing signals are efficiently generated and controlled with an external static magnetic field. The self-diffraction of either two or three femtosecond pulses allows us determining independently the coherent response time ($T_2$ < 50 fs) and the population relaxation, which occurs in several steps. After the laser induced demagnetization, the spin-lattice relaxation is the dominant mechanism ($T_{1,spin-lat}$ < 1.35 ps) and the precession of the mag…
The versatile potential of lead halide perovskites and two-dimensional materials is merged in the Ruddlesen-Popper perovskites having outstanding optical properties. Here, the coherent spin dynamics in Ruddlesen-Popper (PEA)$_2$PbI$_4$ perovskites are investigated by picosecond pump-probe Kerr rotation in an external magnetic field. The Larmor spin precession of resident electrons with a spin dephasing time of 190~ps is identified. The longitudinal spin relaxation time in weak magnetic fields measured by the spin inertia method is as long as 25~$μ$s. A significant anisotropy of the electron $g…
Methylammonium lead triiodine (MAPbI$_3$) is a material representative of the hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites which attract currently great attention due to their photovoltaic efficiency and bright optoelectronic properties. Here, the coherent spin dynamics of charge carriers and spin dependent phenomena induced by the carrier interaction with nuclear spins are studied in MAPbI$_3$ single crystals, using time-resolved Kerr rotation at cryogenic temperatures in magnetic fields up to 3 T. Spin dephasing times up to a few nanoseconds and a longitudinal spin relaxation time of 37 …
