We calculate the shift in emission frequency of the trion and biexciton (relative to that of the single exciton) for nanocrystals (NCs) of inorganic perovskites CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3. The calculations use an envelope-function k.p model combined with self-consistent Hartree-Fock and a treatment of the intercarrier correlation energy in the lowest (second) order of many-body perturbation theory. The carriers in the trion and biexciton are assumed to have relaxed nonradiatively to the ground state at the band edge before emission occurs. The theoretical trion shifts for both CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 are found to be in fair agreement with available experimental data, which include low-temperature single-dot measurements, though are perhaps systematically small by a factor of order 1.5, which can plausibly be explained by a combination of a slightly overestimated dielectric constant and omitted third- and higher-order terms in the correlation energy. Taking this level of agreement into account, we estimate that the ground-state biexciton shift for CsPbBr3 is a redshift of order 10-20 meV for NCs with an edge-length of 12 nm. This value is intermediate among the numerous high-temperature measurements on NCs of CsPbBr3, which vary from large redshifts of order 100 meV to blueshifts of several meV.
The use of ultrafast gating techniques allows us to resolve both spectrally and temporally the emission from short-lived neutral and negatively charged biexcitons in ultrasmall (sub-10 nm) CdSe nanocrystals (nanocrystal quantum dots). Because of forced overlap of electronic wave functions and reduced dielectric screening, these states are characterized by giant interaction energies of tens (neutral biexcitons) to hundreds (charged biexcitons) of meV. Both types of biexcitons show extremely short lifetimes (from sub-100 picoseconds to sub-picosecond time scales) that rapidly shorten with decrea…
In this letter, we propose a new model to determine the recombination oscillator strength of trions and biexcitons for bound and unbound cases in the effective mass approximation. The validity of our model has been confirmed by the radiative lifetime of the trion and biexciton in a spherical quantum dot. The results show that the model works sufficient accuracy in comparison with results of more complex methods such as quantum monte carlo techniques and atomistic calculations.
We use a path integral quantum Monte Carlo method to simulate excitons and biexcitons in core shell nanocrystals with Type-I, II and quasi-Type II band alignments. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques allow for all quantum correlations to be included when determining the thermal ground state, thus producing accurate predictions of biexciton binding. These subtle quantum correlations are found to cause the biexciton to be binding with Type-I carrier localization and strongly anti-binding with Type-II carrier localization, in agreement with experiment for both core shell nanocrystals and dot in rod na…
We study the coherent mixing between two-particle (single exciton) and four-particle (biexciton) states of a semiconductor nanocrystal resulting from the coulomb coupling between states with different numbers of electron-hole pairs. Using a simple model of the nanocrystal wave functions and an envelope function approach, we estimate the efficiency of the multiple exciton generation (MEG) process resulting from such coherent admixture mechanism, including all the relevant states in a very broad energy interval. We show that in a typical ensemble of nanocrystals with 3~nm average radius, the ons…
We propose a method for calculating Coulomb matrix elements between exciton and biexciton states in semiconductor nanocrystals based on the envelope function formalism. We show that such a calculation requires proper treatment of the Bloch parts of the carrier wave functions which, in the leading order, leads to spin selection rules identical to those holding for optical interband transitions. Compared to the usual (intraband) Coulomb couplings, the resulting matrix elements are additionally scaled by the ratio of the lattice constant to the nanocrystal radius. As a result, the Coulomb couplin…
Biexcitons are a manifestation of many-body excitonic interactions crucial for quantum information and quantum computation in the construction of coherent combinations of quantum states. However, due to their small binding energy and low transition efficiency, most biexcitons in conventional semiconductors exist either at cryogenic temperature or under femtosecond pulse laser excitation. Here we demonstrate room temperature, continuous wave driven biexciton states in CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals through coupling with a plasmonic nanogap. The room temperature CsPbBr3 biexciton excitation flu…
We propose a novel mechanism for photogeneration of multiexcitons by single photons (carrier multiplication) in semiconductor nanocrystals. In this mechanism, the Coulomb interaction between two valence-band electrons involving their transfer to the conduction band creates a virtual biexciton from vacuum that is then converted into a real biexciton by photon absorption on an intraband optical transition. This mechanism is inactive in bulk semiconductors as momentum conservation suppresses intraband absorption. However, it becomes highly efficient in zero-dimensional nanocrystals and can provid…
We demonstrate the optical orientation and alignment of excitons in a two-dimensional layer of CsPbI$_3$ perovskite nanocrystals prepared by colloidal synthesis and measure the anisotropic exchange splitting of exciton levels in the nanocrystals. From the experimental data at low temperature (2K), we obtain the average value of anisotropic splitting of bright exciton states of the order of 120μeV. Our calculations demonstrate that there is a significant contribution to the splitting due to the nanocrystal shape anisotropy for all inorganic perovskite nanocrystrals.
Previous single-particle spectroscopic studies of colloidal quantum dots have indicated a significant spread in biexciton lifetimes across an ensemble of nominally identical nanocrystals. It has been speculated that in addition to dot-to-dot variation in physical dimensions, this spread is contributed to by variations in the structure of the quantum dot interface, which controls the shape of the confinement potential. Here we directly evaluate the effect of the composition of the core-shell interface on single- and multi-exciton dynamics via side-by-side measurements of individual core-shell C…
Behaving like atomically-precise two-dimensional quantum wells with non-negligible dielectric contrast, the layered HOIPs have strong electronic interactions leading to tightly bound excitons with binding energies on the order of 500 meV. These strong interactions suggest the possibility of larger excitonic complexes like trions and biexcitons, which are hard to study numerically due to the complexity of the layered HOIPs. Here, we propose and parameterize a model Hamiltonian for excitonic complexes in layered HOIPs and we study the correlated eigenfunctions of trions and biexcitons using a co…
Inorganic nanocrystal gels retain distinct properties of individual nanocrystals while offering tunable, network structure-dependent characteristics. We review different mechanisms for assembling gels from colloidal nanocrystals including (1) controlled destabilization, (2) direct bridging, (3) depletion, as well as linking mediated by (4) coordination bonding or (5) dynamic covalent bonding, and we highlight how each impacts gel properties. These approaches use nanocrystal surface chemistry or the addition of small molecules to mediate inter-nanocrystal attractions. Each method offers advanta…
We study how shape affects multiexciton generation (MEG) rates in a semiconducting nanocrystal by considering CdSe nanorods with varying diameters and aspect ratios. The calculations employ an atomistic semiempirical pseudopotential model combined with an efficacious stochastic approach applied to systems containing up to 20,000 atoms. The effect of nanorod diameter and aspect ratio on multiexciton generation rates is analyzed in terms of the scaling of the density of trion states and the scaling of the Coulomb couplings. Both show distinct scaling from spherical nanocrystals leading to a surp…
We report on systematic numerical study of carrier multiplication (CM) processes in spherically symmetric nanocrystal (NC) and bulk forms of PbSe and PbS representing the test bed for understanding basic aspects of CM dynamics. The adopted numerical method integrates our previously developed Interband Exciton Scattering Model (IESM) and the effective mass based electronic structure model for the lead chalocogenide semiconductors. The analysis of the IESM predicted CM pathways shows complete lack of the pathway interference during the biexciton photogeneration. This allows us to interpret the b…
Engineering semiconductors to enhance carrier multiplication (CM) could lead to increased photovoltaic cell performance and a significant widening of the materials range suitable for future solar technologies. Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) have been proposed as a favourable structure for CM enhancement, and recent measurements by transient absorption have shown evidence for highly efficient CM in lead chalcogenide and CdSe NCs. We report here an assessment of CM yields in CdSe and CdTe NCs by a quantitative analysis of biexciton and exciton signatures in transient photoluminescence decays. …
The instability of metal halide perovskites upon exposure to moisture or heat strongly hampers their applications in optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the large-yield synthesis of highly water-resistant total-inorganic green luminescent CsPbBr3/CsPb2Br5 core/shell heteronanocrystals (HNCs) by developing an in situ phase transition approach. It is implemented via water-driven phase transition of the original monoclinic CsPbBr3 nanocrystal and the resultant tetragonal CsPb2Br5 nanoshell has small lattice mismatch with the CsPbBr3 core, which ensures formation of an epitaxial interface for …
The one-photon absorption cross section of nanocrystals (NCs) of the inorganic perovskite CsPbBr$_{3}$ is studied theoretically using a multiband $\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{p}$ envelope-function model combined with a treatment of intercarrier correlation by many-body perturbation theory. A confined exciton is described first within the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation, and correlation between the electron and hole is then included in leading order by computing the first-order vertex correction to the electron-photon interaction. The vertex correction is found to give an enhancement of the near-thr…
Using previously developed exciton scattering model accounting for the interband, i.e., exciton-biexciton, Coulomb interactions in semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), we derive a closed set of equations for 2D double-quantum coherence signal. The signal depends on the Liouville space pathways which include both the interband scattering processes and the inter- and intraband optical transitions. These processes correspond to the formation of different cross-peaks in the 2D spectra. We further report on our numerical calculations of the 2D signal using reduced level scheme parameterized for PbSe N…
We present a theory of highly excited interacting carriers confined in a semiconductor nanostructure, incorporating Auger coupling between excited states with different number of excitations. The Coulomb matrix elements connecting exciton, bi-exciton and tri-exciton complexes are derived and an intuitive picture of breaking neutral multi-exction complexes into positively and negatively charged multi-exciton complexes is given. The general approach is illustrated by analyzing the coupling of biexciton and exciton in CdSe spherical nanocrystals. The electron and hole states are computed using at…
Single cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals show strong photoluminescence blinking, with on- and off- dwelling times following power-law distributions. We investigate the memory effect in the photoluminescence blinking of single CsPbBr3 nanocrystals and find positive correlations for successive on-times and successive off-times. This memory effect is not sensitive to the nature of the surface capping ligand and the embedding polymer. These observations suggest that photoluminescence intermittency and its memory are mainly controlled by intrinsic traps in the nanocrystals. These findings …
Yb3+-doped inorganic metal-halide perovskites (Yb3+:CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br) have recently been discovered to display highly efficient quantum cutting, in which the energy from individual blue or UV photons absorbed by the material is re-emitted in the form of pairs of near-infrared photons by Yb3+ dopants. Experimental photoluminescence quantum yields approaching 200{%} have been reported. As the first quantum-cutting materials that combine such high photoluminescence quantum yields with strong, broadband absorption in the visible, these materials offer unique opportunities for enhancing the effic…
We study the nature of photo-excited charge carriers in CsPbBr3 nanocrystal thin films by ultrafast optical pump - THz probe spectroscopy. We observe a deviation from a pure Drude dispersion of the THz dielectric response that is ascribed to the polaronic nature of carriers; a transient blueshift of observed phonon frequencies is indicative of the coupling between photogenerated charges and stretching-bending modes of the deformed inorganic sublattice, as confirmed by DFT calculations.
The surprising recent observation of highly emissive triplet-states in lead halide perovskites accounts for their orders-of-magnitude brighter optical signals and high quantum efficiencies compared to other semiconductors. This makes them attractive for future optoelectronic applications, especially in bright low-threshold nano-lasers. Whilst non-resonantly pumped lasing from all-inorganic lead-halide perovskites is now well-established as an attractive pathway to scalable low-power laser sources for nano-optoelectronics, here we showcase a resonant optical pumping scheme on a fast triplet-sta…
