We study the influence of spin--orbit coupling (SOC) on orbital magnetism in $\mathrm{Pb}_{1-x}\mathrm{Sn}_x\mathrm{Te}$, a narrow-gap semiconductor. Using the $π$-matrix method, we calculate material-specific Landau levels and evaluate the magnetization, fully including interband effects. The system exhibits diamagnetism for both $x = 0$ and $x = 0.35$, with the latter showing a stronger response due to its smaller gap. The magnitude of diamagnetism increases monotonically with SOC strength, particularly in strong magnetic fields. To clarify the underlying mechanism, we introduce the free--Zeeman--Dirac (fZD) model and fit its parameters to the calculated Landau levels. The analysis reveals that SOC enhances the Dirac-type interband contribution relative to the Zeeman term, leading to increased diamagnetism. These results demonstrate that SOC can play a key role in orbital magnetism through interband effects.
The diamagnetic response of the free electron gas called the Landau diamagnetism is a complex and elusive effect requiring laborious computations. Here based on the semi-classical treatment of the problem I present a clear picture of the Landau diamagnetism at zero temperature, which offers a simple derivation of this effect and leads to important consequences: 1) the diamagnetic response is due to electron states in a very narrow Fermi surface region in the k-space, 2) small Fermi energy oscillations in an applied magnetic field are caused by redistribution (inflow or outflow) of electrons fr…
A filled skutterudite, La$_{0.5}$Rh$_4$Sb$_{12}$, with a lattice constant of 9.284(2) Å was synthesized using a high-pressure technique. The electrical resistivity showed semiconducting behavior and the energy gap was estimated to be more than 0.08 eV. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicated temperature-independent diamagnetism, which originates from Larmor diamagnetism. The electrical properties of this compound are more similar to those of the La$_{0.5}$Rh$_4$As$_{12}$ semiconductor with an energy gap of 0.03 eV than to those of the La$_{0.6}$Rh$_4$P$_{12}$ superconductor.
The local environment of Ga, Se, and Tl atoms in InTe-based solid solutions was studied by EXAFS technique. It was shown that all investigated atoms are substitutional impurities, which enter the In(1), Te, and In(2) positions in the InTe structure, respectively. The electrical measurements revealed that In$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$Te and InTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ solid solutions become semiconductors at $x>0.24$ and $x>0.15$, respectively.

Based on the Boltzmann transport theory, we study the origin of the anomalous temperature dependence of the Nernst coefficient ($ν$) due to the phonon-drag mechanism. For narrow-gap semiconductors, we find that there are two characteristic temperatures at which a noticeable peak structure appears in $ν$. Contrarily, the Seebeck coefficient ($S$) always has only one peak. While the breakdown of the Sondheimer cancellation due to the momentum-dependence of the electron relaxation time is essential for the peak in $ν$ at low $T$, the contribution of the valence band to the phonon-drag current is …
An oligomeric semiconductor containing three bisthiophenediketopyrrolopyrole units (Tri-BTDPP) was synthesized and characterized. Tri-BTDPP has a HOMO level of -5.34 eV, a broad absorption close to the near infrared region and a low band gap of 1.33 eV. Additionally, a promising hole mobility of 1 x 10-3 cm V-1 s-1 was achieved after thermal annealing at 150 C in organic field effect transistors (OFET). Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells containing Tri-BTDPP and PC71BM as the donor/acceptor couple exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 0.72%. Through an intensive study of the active la…
The presence of defects in the narrow-gap semiconductors GaSb and InSb affects their dopability and hence applicability for a range of optoelectronic applications. Here, we report hybrid density functional theory based calculations of the properties of intrinsic point defects in the two systems, including spin orbit coupling effects, which influence strongly their band structures. With the hybrid DFT approach we adopt, we obtain excellent agreement between our calculated band dispersions, structural, elastic and vibrational properties and available measurements. We compute point defect formati…
The direction and impact parameter dependence of electronic stopping power, along with its velocity threshold behavior, is investigated in a prototypical small band gap semiconductor. We calculate the electronic stopping power of H in Ge, a semiconductor with relatively low packing density, using time-evolving time-dependent density-functional theory. The calculations are carried out in channeling conditions with different impact parameters and in different crystal directions, for projectile velocities ranging from 0.05 to 0.6 atomic units. The satisfactory comparison with available experiment…
We propose a method to realize diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) with p- and n-type carriers by choosing host semiconductors with a narrow band gap. By employing a combination of the density function theory and quantum Monte Carlo simulation, we demonstrate such semiconductors using Mn-doped BaZn2As2, which has a band gap of 0.2 eV. In addition, we found a new non-toxic DMS Mn-doped BaZn2Sb2, of which the Curie temperature Tc is predicted to be higher than that of Mn-doped BaZn2As2, the Tc of which was up to 230 K in the recent experiment.
Using time-dependent density-functional theory, we investigate the electronic stopping power of self-irradiated silicon through non-adiabatic dynamics simulations. For specific velocities above 0.6 atom units, electronic stopping shows a generally assumed metallic behavior that is velocity-scaling. While in the lower velocity regime, the slope of electronic stopping power versus velocity changes and the overall magnitude are significantly greater than expectations, leading to a complete vanish of hard threshold. An analysis of the electron localization function allows us to arrive at the follo…

In this study we present an alternative approach to separating contributions to the NMR shift originating from the Knight shift and chemical shielding by a combination of experimental solid-state NMR results and ab initio calculations. The chemical and Knight shifts are normally distinguished through detailed studies of the resonance frequency as function of temperature and carrier concentration, followed by extrapolation of the shift to zero carrier concentration. This approach is time-consuming and requires studies of multiple samples. Here, we analyzed $^{207}$Pb and $^{125}$Te NMR spin-lat…

Here, we demonstrate an approach that provides a precise control of the dimension of InAs from one-dimensional nanowires to wafer-scale free-standing two-dimensional nanosheets, which have a high degree of crystallinity and outstanding electrical and optical properties, using molecular-beam epitaxy by controlling catalyst alloy segregation. In our approach, two-dimensional InAs nanosheets can be obtained directly from one-dimensional InAs nanowires by silver-indium alloy segregation, which is much easier than all previously reported method, such as traditional buffering technique and select ar…
We review many-body effects, their microscopic origin, as well as their impact onto thermoelectricity in correlated narrow-gap semiconductors. Members of this class---such as FeSi and FeSb$_2$---display an unusual temperature dependence in various observables: insulating with large thermopowers at low temperatures, they turn bad metals at temperatures much smaller than the size of their gaps. This insulator-to-metal crossover is accompanied by spectral weight-transfers over large energies in the optical conductivity and by a gradual transition from activated to Curie-Weiss-like behaviour in th…

A thin, narrow-bandgap semiconductor Bi$_2$O$_2$Te nanosheet is obtained via mechanical exfoliation and a Hall-bar device is fabricated from it on a heavily doped Si/SiO$_2$ substrate and studied at low temperatures. Gate transfer characteristic measurements show that the transport carriers in the nanosheet are of $n$-type. The carrier density, mobility, and mean free path in the nanosheet are determined by measurements of the Hall resistance and the longitudinal resistance of the Hall-bar device and it is found that the electron transport in the nanosheet is in a quasi-two-dimensional (2D), s…
ABSTRACT: Narrow-gap semiconductors are sought-after materials due to their potential for long-wavelength detectors, thermoelectrics, and more recently non-trivial topology. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a new family of narrow-gap semiconductors, $R$$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ ($R=$ La, Ce). Single crystal x-ray diffraction at room temperature reveals that the As square nets distort and Cd vacancies order in a monoclinic superstructure. A putative charge-density ordered state sets in at 279~K in La$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ and at 136~K in Ce$_{3}$Cd$_{2}$As$_{6}$ and is accompan…
Tunneling atomic force microscopy (TUNA) was used at ambient conditions to measure the current-voltage ($I$-$V$) characteristics at clean surfaces of highly oriented graphite samples with Bernal and rhombohedral stacking orders. The characteristic curves measured on Bernal-stacked graphite surfaces can be understood with an ordinary self-consistent semiconductor modeling and quantum mechanical tunneling current derivations. We show that the absence of a voltage region without measurable current in the $I$-$V$ spectra is not a proof of the lack of an energy band gap. It can be induced by a surf…
The electronic band structure of complex nanostructured semiconductors has a considerable effect on the final electronic and optical properties of the material and, ultimately, on the functionality of the devices incorporating them. Valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy (VEELS) in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) provides the possibility of measuring this property of semiconductors with high spatial resolution. However, it still represents a challenge for narrow-bandgap semiconductors, since an electron beam with low energy spread is required. Here we demonstrate that by means of…
We theoretically unveil the unconventional possibility to achieve extremely high thermoelectric power factors in lightly doped narrow gap semiconductors with asymmetric conduction/valence bands operated in the bipolar transport regime. Specifically, using Boltzmann transport simulations, we show that narrow bandgap materials, rather than suffering from performance degradation due to bipolar conduction, if they possess highly asymmetric conduction and valence bands in terms of either effective masses, density of states, or phonon scattering rates, then they can deliver very high power factors. …
The contribution of bulk and surface to the electrical resistance along crystallographic \textit{b}- and \textit{c}-axes as a function of crystal thickness gives evidence for a temperature independent surface states in an antiferromagnetic narrow-gap semiconductor CrSb$_{2}$. ARPES shows a clear electron-like pocket at $Γ$-$Z$ direction which is absent in the bulk band structure. First-principles calculations also confirm the existence of metallic surface states inside the bulk gap. Whereas combined experimental probes point to enhanced surface conduction similar to topological insulators, sur…
Resistive switching induced by electronic avalanche breakdown in GaTa$_4$Se$_{8-x}$Te$_x$ narrow gap Mott Insulators
We report the synthesis and characterization of a Si-based ternary semiconductor Mg$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$, which exhibits a quasi-two-dimensional structure, where the trigonal Mg$_2$Si$_2$Te$_6$ layers are separated by Mg ions. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structure. The experimentally determined direct band gap is 1.39 eV, consistent with the value of the density function theory calculations. Our results reveal that Mg$_3$Si$_2$Te$_6$ is a direct gap semiconductor with a relatively narrow gap, whi…
Ge$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$ (Ge:Fe) shows ferromagnetic behavior up to a relatively high temperature of 210 K, and hence is a promising material for spintronic applications compatible with Si technology. We have studied its electronic structure by soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SX-ARPES) measurements in order to elucidate the mechanism of the ferromagnetism. We observed finite Fe 3$d$ components in the states at the Fermi level ($E_{F}$) in a wide region in momentum space and $E_{F}$ was located above the valence-band maximum (VBM). First-principles supercell calculation also sug…
The optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are widely dominated by excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs. These quasi-particles exhibit giant oscillator strength and give rise to narrow-band, well-pronounced optical transitions, which can be brought into resonance with electromagnetic fields in microcavities and plasmonic nanostructures. Due to the atomic thinness and robustness of the monolayers, their integration in van der Waals heterostructures provides unique opportunities for engineering strong light-matter coupling. We review first results in this emergin…
