In this work, we investigate the generation and propagation of gravitational waves within a minimal gravitational SME (Standard Model Extension). Starting from the modified graviton dispersion relation derived in the linearized gravity sector, we analyze the polarization properties of gravitational waves in the transverse-traceless tensor sector. We then construct the retarded Green function associated with the Lorentz-violating wave operator, explicitly verifying the causal structure of the theory and identifying the modified propagation speeds of the tensorial modes. In addition, we study the source-induced emission of gravitational waves from a binary black-hole system. We show that the gravitational waveform preserves the standard quadrupolar amplitude and polarization structure, while Lorentz-violating effects enter exclusively through a modification of the retarded time. As a result, the spatial components of the metric perturbation $h_{ij}(t,r)$ acquire a phase shift determined by the SME coefficients. Finally, we estimate phenomenological bounds to the model under consideration.
In this talk, we give a short overview of recent work on cosmological solutions within the SME gravitational sector under the assumption of explicit spacetime-symmetry breaking. We show that for the special case of timelike diffeomorphism breaking, the resulting Friedmann equations can be written as standard FLRW cosmology with added dynamical dark energy, and we discuss primordial gravitational waves in the context of this model.
This proceedings contribution outlines the current structure of the gravity sector of the Standard-Model Extension and summaries recent progress in gravitational wave analysis.
The Standard Model Extension (SME) is a generic parametrization for Lorentz violation and the phenomenological consequences of the minimal gravity sector of the SME are usually studied using a post-Newtonian expansion that requires spacetime to be asymptotically flat. However, there is a term in this sector for which these approximations are unable to make predictions; this is known as the $t$ puzzle. The present paper studies a model of spontaneous Lorentz violation in the minimal gravity sector of the SME in a static and spherically symmetric situation, when no additional matter fields are p…
The Hamiltonian formulation of the gravitational sector of the Standard-Model Extension (SME) with nondynamical fields $u$ and $s^{μν}$ is studied. We provide the relevant Hamiltonians that describe the constrained phase space and the dynamics of the induced metric on the ADM hypersurface. The generalization of the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term has been crucial to preventing second time-derivatives of the metric tensor in the Hamiltonians. By extracting the dynamics and constraints from the Einstein equations we have proved the equivalence between the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulatio…
A method to find the symmetries of a theory in the first order formalism of gravity is presented. This method is applied to the minimal gravity sector of the Standard Model Extension. It is argued that no inconsistencies arise when Lorentz violation is explicit and the relation between Lorentz violation and invariance under (active) diffeomorphisms is clearly exposed.
The Standard-Model Extension (SME) is an effective-field-theoretic framework that catalogs all Lorentz-violating field operators. The anisotropic correction from the minimal gravitational SME to Newtonian gravitational energy for spheroids is studied, and the rotation of rigid spheroids is solved with perturbation method and numerical approach. The well-known forced precession solution given by Nordtvedt in the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism is recovered and applied to two observed solitary millisecond pulsars to set bounds on the coefficients for Lorentz violation in the SME framework…
We investigate first-order vacuum phase transitions in the presence of a non-minimally coupled scalar field starting with the coupling effect on the initial dynamics of phase transitions by defining an effective potential for the scalar field and then performing three dimensional numerical simulations to observe any possible distinction in gravitational wave power spectrum. Although we give a description of the model with the expanding background, in this particular paper, we exclude the scale factor contribution since we primarily focus on the immediate impact of the non-minimal coupling at i…
Thanks to unparalleled near-horizon images of the shadows of Messier 87* (M87*) and Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) delivered by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), two amazing windows opened up to us for the strong-field test of the gravity theories as well as fundamental physics. Information recently published from EHT about the Sgr A*'s shadow lets us have a novel possibility of exploration of Lorentz symmetry violation (LSV) within the Standard-Model Extension (SME) framework. Despite the agreement between the shadow image of Sgr A* and the prediction of the general theory of relativity, there is s…
The speed of gravitational waves for a single observation can be measured by the time delay among gravitational-wave detectors with Bayesian inference. Then multiple measurements can be combined to produce a more accurate result. From the near simultaneous detection of gravitational waves and gamma rays originating from GW170817/GRB 170817A, the speed of gravitational wave signal was found to be the same as the the speed of the gamma rays to approximately one part in $10^{15}$. Here we present a different method of measuring the speed of gravitational waves, not based on an associated electrom…
We consider inflation driven by an axion-like particle coupled to an SU(2) gauge sector via a Chern-Simons term. Known as chromo-natural inflation, this scenario is in tension with CMB observations. In order to remedy this fact and preserve both the symmetries and the intriguing gravitational wave phenomenology exhibited by the model, we explore the non-minimal coupling of the axion-inflaton to the Einstein tensor. We identify regions of parameter space corresponding to a viable cosmology at CMB scales. We also highlight the possibility of a large and chiral gravitational wave signal at small …
In this paper, we consider well known Tolman V perfect fluid solution and extend it to its an anisotropic version using gravitational decoupling by minimal geometric deformation approach and analyze the behavior of new version of the solution graphically. The effects of coupling constant on anisotropic factor has been measured and presented graphically. The matching conditions at the surface of inner and outer geometry have also been discussed. The viability of the solution has been studied by presenting the physical analysis of the solution.
We show that the combined minimal and non minimal interaction with the gravitational field may produce the generation of a cosmological constant without self-interaction of the scalar field. In the same vein we analyze the existence of states of a scalar field that by a combined interaction of minimal and non minimal coupling with the gravitational field can exhibit an unexpected property, to wit, they are acted on by the gravitational field but do not generate gravitational field. In other words, states that seems to violate the action-reaction principle. We present explicit examples of this …
General Relativity predicts two modes for plane gravitational waves. When a tiny violation of Lorentz invariance occurs, the two gravitational wave modes are modified. We use perturbation theory to study the detailed form of the modifications to the two gravitational wave modes from the minimal Lorentz-violation coupling. The perturbation solution for the metric fluctuation up to the first order in Lorentz violation is discussed. Then, we investigate the motions of test particles under the influence of the plane gravitational waves with Lorentz violation. First-order deviations from the usual …
Schemes of gravitationally induced decoherence are being actively investigated as possible mechanisms for the quantum-to-classical transition. Here, we introduce a decoherence process due to quantum gravity effects. We assume a foamy quantum spacetime with a fluctuating minimal length coinciding on average with the Planck scale. Considering deformed canonical commutation relations with a fluctuating deformation parameter, we derive a Lindblad master equation that yields localization in energy space and decoherence times consistent with the currently available observational evidence. Compared t…
It is standard practice to study the lensing of gravitational waves (GW) using the geometric optics regime. However, in many astrophysical configurations this regime breaks down as the wavelength becomes comparable to the Schwarzschild radius of the lens. We revisit the lensing of GW including corrections beyond geometric optics. We propose a perturbative method for calculating these corrections simply solving first order decoupled differential equations. We study the behavior of a single ray and find that the polarization plane defined in geometric optics is smeared due to diffraction effects…
We propose to introduce non-minimal couplings of Affleck-Dine (AD) field to gravity by adding the coupling of AD field to the Ricci scalar curvature. As the Jordan frame supergravity always predict $|Φ|^2 {\cal R}/6$ type coupling for scalars with canonical kinetic terms, we propose a way to realize the required $c_0|Φ|^2 {\cal R}$-type couplings with generic $c_0$ for canonical complex scalar fields after SUSY breaking. The impacts of such non-minimal gravitational couplings for AD field is shown, especially on the Q-balls formation and the associated gravitational wave (GW) productions. New …
We study the phenomenology associated to non-minimally coupled dark matter. In particular, we consider the model where the non-minimal coupling arises from the formation of relativistic Bose-Einstein condensates in high density regions of dark matter [1]. This non-minimal coupling is of Horndeski type and leads to a local modification of the speed of gravity with respect to the speed of light. Therefore we can constrain the model by using the joint detection of GW170817 and GRB170817A. We show that the constraints obtained in this way are quite tight, if the dark matter field oscillates freely…
The 3+1 (ADM) formulation of General Relativity is used in, for example, canonical quantum gravity and numerical relativity. Here we present a 3+1 decomposition of the minimal Standard-Model Extension gravity Lagrangian. By choosing the leaves of foliation to lie along a timelike vector field we write the theory in a form which will allow for comparison and matching to other gravity models.
Tiny violation of Lorentz invariance has been the subject of theoretic study and experimental test for a long time. We use the Standard-Model Extension (SME) framework to investigate the effect of the minimal Lorentz violation on the structure of a neutron star. A set of hydrostatic equations with modifications from Lorentz violation are derived, and then the modifications are isolated and added to the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation as the leading-order Lorentz-violation corrections in relativistic systems. A perturbation solution to the leading-order modified TOV equations is found…
