The Standard-Model Extension (SME) is an effective-field-theoretic framework that catalogs all Lorentz-violating field operators. The anisotropic correction from the minimal gravitational SME to Newtonian gravitational energy for spheroids is studied, and the rotation of rigid spheroids is solved with perturbation method and numerical approach. The well-known forced precession solution given by Nordtvedt in the parameterized post-Newtonian formalism is recovered and applied to two observed solitary millisecond pulsars to set bounds on the coefficients for Lorentz violation in the SME framework. A different solution, which describes the rotation of an otherwise free-precessing star in the presence of Lorentz violation, is found, and its consequences on pulsar signals and continuous gravitational waves (GWs) emitted by neutron stars (NSs) are investigated. The study provides new possible tests of Lorentz violation once free-precessing NSs are firmly identified in the future.
We report on the search for Lorentz violating sidereal variations of the frequency difference of co-located spin-species while the Earth and hence the laboratory reference frame rotates with respect to a relic background field. The co-magnetometer used is based on the detection of freely precessing nuclear spins from polarized 3He and 129Xe gas samples using SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. As result we can determine the limit for the equatorial component of the background field interacting with the spin of the bound neutron to be bn < 3.7 x 10^{-32} GeV (95 C.L.).
This work gives an explicit exact expression for the Thomas precession arising in the framework of Special Theory of Relativity as the spatial rotation resulting from two subsequence Lorentz boosts. The final result for the orthogonal matrix of Thomas precession is given by Eqs. (21)--(25). A trivial calculation leads to the compact formula (26) for the angle of rotation due to Thomas precession. In the framework of Gaia the special-relativistic Thomas precession is an important step in the derivation of an aberrational formula with the Mansouri-Sexl parameters. The latter formula will be used…
We develop a relativistic velocity space called \emph{rapidity space} from the single assumption of Lorentz invariance, and use it to visualize and calculate effects resulting from the successive application of non-colinear Lorentz boosts. In particular, we show how rapidity space provides a geometric approach to Wigner rotation and Thomas precession in the same way that spacetime provides a geometrical approach to kinematic effects in special relativity.
We report on the search for a CPT and Lorentz invariance violating coupling of the 3He and 129Xe nuclear spins (each largely determined by a valence neutron) to background tensor fields which permeate the universe. Our experimental approach is to measure the free precession of nuclear spin polarized 3He and 129Xe atoms in a homogeneous magnetic guiding field of about 400 nT using LTC SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. As the laboratory reference frame rotates with respect to distant stars, we look for a sidereal modulation of the Larmor frequencies of the co-located spin samples. As …
Kilohertz QPOs can be used as a probe of the inner regions of accretion disks in compact stars and hence also of the properties of the central object. Most models of kHz QPOs involve epicyclic frequencies to explain their origin. We compute the epicyclic frequencies of nearly circular orbits around rotating strange quark stars. The MIT bag model is used to model the equation of state of quark matter and the uniformly rotating stellar configurations are computed in full general relativity. The vertical epicyclic frequency and the related nodal precession rate of inclined orbits are very sensiti…
Gravitational preferred frame effects are generally predicted by alternative theories that exhibit an isotropic violation of local Lorentz invariance of gravity. They are described by three parameters in the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism. One of their strong-field generalizations, $\hat α_2$, induces a precession of a pulsar's spin around its movement direction with respect to the preferred frame. We constrain $\hat α_2$ by using the non-detection of such a precession using the characteristics of the pulse profile. In our analysis we use a large number of observations from the 100-m Ef…
We have studied quasi-periodic oscillations frequencies in a rotating black hole with Lorentz symmetry breaking parameter in Einstein-bumblebee gravity by relativistic precession model. We find that in the rotating case with non-zero spin parameter both of the periastron and nodal precession frequencies increase with the Lorentz symmetry breaking parameter, but the azimuthal frequency decreases. In the non-rotating black hole case, the nodal precession frequency disappears for arbitrary Lorentz symmetry breaking parameter. With the observation data of GRO J1655-40, XTE J1550-564, and GRS 1915+…
The pure-gravity sector of the minimal Standard-Model Extension is studied in the limit of Riemann spacetime. A method is developed to extract the modified Einstein field equations in the limit of small metric fluctuations about the Minkowski vacuum, while allowing for the dynamics of the 20 independent coefficients for Lorentz violation. The linearized effective equations are solved to obtain the post-newtonian metric. The corresponding post-newtonian behavior of a perfect fluid is studied and applied to the gravitating many-body system. Illustrative examples of the methodology are provided u…
The theoretical description of fermions in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation is developed. We classify all Lorentz- and CPT-violating and invariant terms in the quadratic Lagrange density for a Dirac fermion, including operators of arbitrary mass dimension. The exact dispersion relation is obtained in closed and compact form, and projection operators for the spinors are derived. The Pauli hamiltonians for particles and antiparticles are extracted, and observable combinations of operators are identified. We characterize and enumerate the coefficients for Lorentz violation for any operat…
By adopting a methodology proposed by R.J. Adler \etl, we study the interesting analogy between the fermion-gravity and the fermion-electromagnetic interactions in the presence of the minimal Lorentz-violating (LV) fermion coefficients. The one-fermion matrix elements of gravitational interaction (OMEGI) are obtained with a prescribed Lense-Thirring (LT) metric assuming test particle assumption. Quite distinct from the extensively studied linear gravitational potential, the LT metric is an essentially curved metric, and thus reveals the anomalous LV matter-gravity couplings as a manifestation …
The post-Newtonian motion around an oblate spheroid: the mixed orbital effects due to the Newtonian oblateness and the post-Newtonian mass monopole accelerations
Implementing Poincaré's `geometric conventionalism' a scalar Lorentz-covariant gravity model is obtained based on gravitationally modified Lorentz transformations (or GMLT). The modification essentially consists of an appropriate space-time and momentum-energy scaling ("normalization") relative to a nondynamical flat background geometry according to an isotropic, nonsingular gravitational `affecting' function Phi(r). Elimination of the gravitationally `unaffected' S_0 perspective by local composition of space-time GMLT recovers the local Minkowskian metric and thus preserves the invariance of …
All quantum gravity approaches lead to small modifications in the standard laws of physics which lead to violations of Lorentz invariance. One particular example is the extended standard model (SME). Here, a general phenomenological approach for extensions of the Maxwell equations is presented which turns out to be more general than the SME and which covers charge non--conservation (CNC), too. The new Lorentz invariance violating terms cannot be probed by optical experiments but need, instead, the exploration of the electromagnetic field created by a point charge or a magnetic dipole. Some sca…
An apparent paradox in Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, known as a Thomas precession rotation in atomic physics, has been verified experimentally in a number of ways. However, somewhat surprisingly, it has not yet been demonstrated algebraically in a straightforward manner using Lorentz-matrix-algebra. Authors in the past have resorted instead to computer verifications, or to overly-complicated derivations, leaving undergraduate students in particular with the impression that this is a mysterious and mathematically inaccessible phenomenon. This is surprising because, as shown in the pr…
The well known Geodesic Equation of General Relativity is newly formulated in Weyl two-spinor language in a convenient way susceptible of being combined with a set of two-spinor equations, equivalent to the Lorentz Force of Electrodynamics, obtained in previous studies. General spinor equations of motion for a test charged spin 1/2 particle in arbitrary electromagnetic and gravitational fields fields are obtained describing not only spacetime trajectories but also spin precession. For the case of the Schwarzschild metric and radial trajectories, spinor equations unifying gravitational and elec…
