In this note, we show that real line arrangements of type at most one, admitting only intersection points of multiplicity at most five, satisfy certain boundedness properties. In particular, we prove that a free real arrangement of $d$ lines with intersection multiplicities bounded by $5$ can have at most $522$ lines and consequently there exist only finitely many combinatorial types of such arrangements.
The main purpose of the present paper is to study the numerical properties of supersolvable resolutions of line arrangements. We provide upper-bounds on the so-called extension to supersolvability numbers for certain extreme line arrangements in $\mathbb{P}^{2}_{\mathbb{C}}$ and we show that these numbers \textbf{are not} determined by the intersection lattice of the given arrangement.
In this paper we obtain presentations of fundamental groups of the complements of three quadric-line arrangements in P^2. The first arrangement is a smooth quadric Q with n tangent lines to Q, and the second one is a quadric Q with n lines passing through a point p not in Q. The last arrangement consists of a quadric Q with n lines passing through a point p in Q.
In the present note we provide a partial classification of nearly free conic-line arrangements in the complex plane having nodes, tacnodes, and ordinary triple points. In this setting, our theoretical bound tells us that the degree of such an arrangement is bounded from above by $12$. We construct examples of nearly free conic-line arrangements having degree $3,4,5,6,7$, and we prove that in degree $10$, $11$, and $12$ there is no such arrangement.
We study supersolvable line arrangements in ${\mathbb P}^2$ over the reals and over the complex numbers, as the first step toward a combinatorial classification. Our main results show that a nontrivial (i.e., not a pencil or near pencil) complex line arrangement cannot have more than 4 modular points, and if all of the crossing points of a complex line arrangement have multiplicity 3 or 4, then the arrangement must have 0 modular points (i.e., it cannot be supersolvable). This provides at least a little evidence for our conjecture that every nontrivial complex supersolvable line arrangement ha…
The complement of a hyperplane arrangement in the complex projective space is known to be formal. We prove the global Milnor fiber associated to the homogeneous polynomial defining the arrangement may not even be 1-formal, by giving an example in dimension 2.
We consider the multiplier ideals of the ideal of a reduced union of lines through the origin in C^3. For general arrangements of lines, we calculate the multiplier ideals.
The purpose of this paper is to study the famous Pappus configuration of $9$ lines and its dual arrangement. We show among others that by applying the Pappus Theorem to the dual arrangement we obtain the configuration corresponding to the initial data of beginning configuration. We consider also the Pappus arrangements with some additional incidences and we establish algebraic conditions paralleling with these incidences.
In this paper, we continue the study of the relation between rational points of rational elliptic surfaces and plane curves. As an application, we give first examples of Zariski pairs of cubic-line arrangements that do not involve inflectional tangent lines.
Using a recent result by S. Papadima and A. Suciu, we show that the equivariant Poincaré-Deligne polynomial of the Milnor fiber of a projective line arrangement having only double and triple points is combinatorially determined.
The main focus of these notes is recent work on linear systems in which line arrangements play a role, including problems such as semi-effectivity, containment problems of symbolic powers of homogeneous ideals in their powers, bounded negativity, and a new perspective on the SHGH Conjecture. Along the way we will be concerned with asymptotic invariants such as Waldschmidt constants, resurgences and H-constants.
We prove the existence of complexified real arrangements with the same combinatorics but different embeddings in the complex projective plane. Such pair of arrangements has an additional property: they admit conjugated equations on the ring of polynomials over the number field ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{5})$.
A rank one local system $\LL$ on a smooth complex algebraic variety $M$ is admissible roughly speaking if the dimension of the cohomology groups $H^m(M,\LL)$ can be computed directly from the cohomology algebra $H^*(M,\C)$. We say that a line arrangement $\A$ is of type $\CC_k$ if $k \ge 0 $ is the minimal number of lines in $\A$ containing all the points of multiplicity at least 3. We show that if $\A$ is a line arrangement in the classes $\CC_k$ for $k\leq 2$, then any rank one local system $\LL$ on the line arrangement complement $M$ is admissible. Partial results are obtained for the class…
In this paper, we give a Zariski triple of the arrangements for a smooth quartic and its four bitangents. A key criterion to distinguish the topology of such curves is given by a matrix related to the height pairing of rational points arising from three bitangent lines.

For a line arrangement in the complex projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$, we investigate the compactification $\overline{F}$ of the affine Milnor fiber in $\mathbb{P}^3$ and its minimal resolution $\widetilde{F}$. We compute the Chern numbers in terms of the combinatorics of the line arrangement, then we show that the minimal resolution is never a quotient of a ball; in addition, we also prove that $\widetilde{F}$ is of general type when the arrangement has only nodes or triple points as singularities.

In this paper we describe the complement of real line arrangements in the complex plane in terms of the boundary three-manifold of the line arrangement. We show that the boundary manifold of any line arrangement is a graph manifold with Seifert fibered vertex manifolds, and depends only on the incidence graph of the arrangement. When the line arrangement is defined over the real numbers, we show that the homotopy type of the complement is determined by the incidence graph together with orderings on the edges emanating from each vertex.
We prove Anzis and Tohaneanu conjecture, that is the Dirac-Motzkin conjecture for supersolvable line arrangements in the projective plane over an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. Moreover, we show that a divisionally free arrangements of lines contain at least one double point, that can be regarded as the Sylvester-Gallai theorem for some free arrangements. This is a corollary of a general result that if you add a line to a free projective line arrangement, then that line has to contain at least one double point. Also we prove some conjectures and one open problems related to supersolva…
Let $\mathcal{A} $ be a complexified-real arrangement of lines in $\mathbb{C}^2.$ Let $H$ be any line in $ \mathcal{A} $. Then, form a new complexified-real arrangement $ \mathcal{B}_H = \mathcal{A} \cup \mathcal{C} $ where $ \mathcal{C} \cup \{H\} $ is a pencil of lines with multiplicity $ m\geq 3 $, the intersection point in the pencil is not a multiple point in $ \mathcal{A}, $ and every line in $ \mathcal{C} $ intersects every line in $ \mathcal{A}\setminus \{H\} $ in points of multiplicity two. In this article, we show that for $ H_1, H_2 \in \mathcal{A} $ we may have that $ \mathcal{B}_{…
We show that the number of lines in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement is upper bounded by $3m-3$ and we classify the $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangements with two modular points up-to lattice-isotopy. A lower bound for the number of double points $n_2$ in an $m$--homogeneous supersolvable line arrangement of $d$ lines is also considered. When $3 \leq m \leq 5$, or when $m \geq \frac{d}{2}$, or when there are at least two modular points, we show that $n_2 \geq \frac{d}{2}$, as conjectured by B. Anzis and S. O. Toh\u aneanu. This conjecture is shown to hold also for …
We propose an approach to study logarithmic sheaves T(-log A) associated with a hyperplane arrangements A on the projective space, based on projective duality, direct image functors and vector bundles methods. We focus on freeness of line arrangements having a point with high multiplicity.
We classify moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points. We show that moduli spaces of arrangements of 10 lines with quadruple points may consist of more than 2 disconnected components, namely 3 or 4 distinct points. We also present defining equations to those arrangements whose moduli spaces are still reducible after taking quotients of complex conjugations.
We study a relation between roots of characteristic polynomials and intersection points of line arrangements. Using these results, we obtain a lot of applications for line arrangements. Namely, we give (i) a generalized addition theorem for line arrangements, (ii) a generalization of Faenzi-Vallès' theorem over a field of arbitrary characteristic, (iii) a partial result on the conjecture of Terao of line arrangements, and (iv) a new sufficient condition for freeness over finite fields. Also, a higher dimensional version of main results is considered.
We show that the monodromy operator action on the first cohomology group of the Milnor fiber is combinatorially determined for line arrangements with at most triple points and containing at most 18 lines, with one possible exception.
The main goal of this note is to begin a systematic study on conic-line arrangements in the complex projective plane. We show a de Bruijn-Erdős-type inequality and Hirzebruch-type inequality for a certain class of conic-line arrangements having ordinary singularities. We will also study, in detail, certain conic-line arrangements in the context of the geography of log-surfaces and free divisors in the sense of Saito.
There are two invariants associated to any line arrangement: the freeness defect $ν(C)$ and an upper bound for it, denoted by $ν'(C)$, coming from a recent result by Uli Walther. We show that $ν'(C)$ is combinatorially determined, at least when the number of lines in $C$ is odd, while the same property is conjectural for $ν(C)$. In addition, we conjecture that the equality $ν(C)=ν'(C)$ holds if and only if the essential arrangement $C$ of $d$ lines has either a point of multiplicity $d-1$, or has only double and triple points. We prove both conjectures in some cases, in particular when the num…
Following the general strategy proposed by G.Rybnikov, we present a proof of his well-known result, that is, the existence of two arrangements of lines having the same combinatorial type, but non-isomorphic fundamental groups. To do so, the Alexander Invariant and certain invariants of combinatorial line arrangements are presented and developed for combinatorics with only double and triple points. This is part of a more general project to better understand the relationship between topology and combinatorics of line arrangements.
One of the open questions in the geometry of line arrangements is to what extent does the incidence lattice of an arrangement determine its fundamental group. Line arrangements of up to 6 lines were recently classified by K.M. Fan, and it turns out that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines the projective fundamental group. We use actions on the set of wiring diagrams, introduced in [GTV] (math.AG/0107178), to classify real arrangements of up to 8 lines. In particular, we show that the incidence lattice of such arrangements determines both the affine and the projective fundamen…
In this paper we investigate special arrangements of lines in multiprojective spaces. In particular, we characterize codimensional two arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) varieties in $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^1$, called varieties of lines. We also describe their ACM property from combinatorial algebra point of view.
We prove the existence of Gysin morphisms for hyperplane sections that may not satisfy the usual hypotheses of the Lefschetz hyperplane theorem. As an application, we show the triviality of the Alexander polynomial of a particular class of non-symmetric line arrangements, thus providing positive evidence for a conjecture of Papadima and Suciu.
