Large language models (LLMs) demonstrate advanced reasoning abilities, enabling robots to understand natural language instructions and generate high-level plans with appropriate grounding. However, LLM hallucinations present a significant challenge, often leading to overconfident yet potentially misaligned or unsafe plans. While researchers have explored uncertainty estimation to improve the reliability of LLM-based planning, existing studies have not sufficiently differentiated between epistemic and intrinsic uncertainty, limiting the effectiveness of uncertainty estimation. In this paper, we present Combined Uncertainty estimation for Reliable Embodied planning (CURE), which decomposes the uncertainty into epistemic and intrinsic uncertainty, each estimated separately. Furthermore, epistemic uncertainty is subdivided into task clarity and task familiarity for more accurate evaluation. The overall uncertainty assessments are obtained using random network distillation and multi-layer perceptron regression heads driven by LLM features. We validated our approach in two distinct experimental settings: kitchen manipulation and tabletop rearrangement experiments. The results show that, compared to existing methods, our approach yields uncertainty estimates that are more closely aligned with the actual execution outcomes.

Robot planning in partially observable domains is difficult, because a robot needs to estimate the current state and plan actions at the same time. When the domain includes many objects, reasoning about the objects and their relationships makes robot planning even more difficult. In this paper, we develop an algorithm called scene analysis for robot planning (SARP) that enables robots to reason with visual contextual information toward achieving long-term goals under uncertainty. SARP constructs scene graphs, a factored representation of objects and their relations, using images captured from …

This paper presents a collection of path planning algorithms for real-time movement of multiple robots across a Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System (RMFS). Robots are assigned to move storage units to pickers at working stations instead of requiring pickers to go to the storage area. Path planning algorithms aim to find paths for the robots to fulfill the requests without collisions or deadlocks. The state-of-the-art path planning algorithms, including WHCA*, FAR, BCP, OD&ID and CBS, were adapted to suit path planning in RMFS and integrated within a simulation tool to guide the robots from their…

Autonomous robots operating in large knowledgeintensive domains require planning in the discrete (task) space and the continuous (motion) space. In knowledge-intensive domains, on the one hand, robots have to reason at the highestlevel, for example the regions to navigate to or objects to be picked up and their properties; on the other hand, the feasibility of the respective navigation tasks have to be checked at the controller execution level. Moreover, employing multiple robots offer enhanced performance capabilities over a single robot performing the same task. To this end, we present an in…

Fast and efficient sampling-based motion planning (SMP) is an integral component of many robotic systems, such as autonomous cars. A popular technique to improve the efficiency of these planners is to restrict search space in the planning domain. Existing algorithms define parametric functions to bound the search space, but these do not extend to non-holonomic robotic systems. Recent learning-based methods use a combination of convolutional and fully connected networks to encode the planning space. However, these methods are restricted to fixed map sizes, which are often not realistic in the r…
Path planning for multiple robots is well studied in the AI and robotics communities. For a given discretized environment, robots need to find collision-free paths to a set of specified goal locations. Robots can be fully anonymous, non-anonymous, or organized in groups. Although powerful solvers for this abstract problem exist, they make simplifying assumptions by ignoring kinematic constraints, making it difficult to use the resulting plans on actual robots. In this paper, we present a solution which takes kinematic constraints, such as maximum velocities, into account, while guaranteeing a …

This paper presents a novel motion and trajectory planning algorithm for nonholonomic mobile robots that uses recent advances in deep reinforcement learning. Starting from a random initial state, i.e., position, velocity and orientation, the robot reaches an arbitrary target state while taking both kinematic and dynamic constraints into account. Our deep reinforcement learning agent not only processes a continuous state space it also executes continuous actions, i.e., the acceleration of wheels and the adaptation of the steering angle. We evaluate our motion and trajectory planning on a mobile…

We propose novel techniques for task allocation and planning in multi-robot systems operating in uncertain environments. Task allocation is performed simultaneously with planning, which provides more detailed information about individual robot behaviour, but also exploits independence between tasks to do so efficiently. We use Markov decision processes to model robot behaviour and linear temporal logic to specify tasks and safety constraints. Building upon techniques and tools from formal verification, we show how to generate a sequence of multi-robot policies, iteratively refining them to rea…

We describe and evaluate a novel optimization-based off-line path planning algorithm for mobile robots based on the Counterexample-Guided Inductive Optimization (CEGIO) technique. CEGIO iteratively employs counterexamples generated from Boolean Satisfiability (SAT) and Satisfiability Modulo Theories (SMT) solvers, in order to guide the optimization process and to ensure global optimization. This paper marks the first application of CEGIO for planning mobile robot path. In particular, CEGIO has been successfully applied to obtain optimal two-dimensional paths for autonomous mobile robots using …

With the objective of comparing this large assortment of state-of-the-art motion-planning techniques, we introduce a novel open-source motion-planning benchmark for wheeled mobile robots, whose scenarios resemble real-world applications (such as navigating warehouse…
In this paper, we look into the minimum obstacle displacement (MOD) planning problem from a mobile robot motion planning perspective. This problem finds an optimal path to goal by displacing movable obstacles when no path exists due to collision with obstacles. However this problem is computationally expensive and grows exponentially in the size of number of movable obstacles. This work looks into approximate solutions that are computationally less intensive and differ from the optimal solution by a factor of the optimal cost.

Intelligent robots provide a new insight into efficiency improvement in industrial and service scenarios to replace human labor. However, these scenarios include dense and dynamic obstacles that make motion planning of robots challenging. Traditional algorithms like A* can plan collision-free trajectories in static environment, but their performance degrades and computational cost increases steeply in dense and dynamic scenarios. Optimal-value reinforcement learning algorithms (RL) can address these problems but suffer slow speed and instability in network convergence. Network of policy gradie…
This paper addresses the problem of learning abstractions that boost robot planning performance while providing strong guarantees of reliability. Although state-of-the-art hierarchical robot planning algorithms allow robots to efficiently compute long-horizon motion plans for achieving user desired tasks, these methods typically rely upon environment-dependent state and action abstractions that need to be hand-designed by experts. We present a new approach for bootstrapping the entire hierarchical planning process. This allows us to compute abstract states and actions for new environments auto…
With the development of robotics and artificial intelligence field unceasingly thorough, path planning as an important field of robot calculation has been widespread concern. This paper analyzes the current development of robot and path planning algorithm and focuses on the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional intelligent path planning as well as the path planning. The problem of mobile robot path planning is studied by using ant colony algorithm, and it also provides some solving methods.
An important capability of autonomous multi-robot systems is to prevent collision among the individual robots. One approach to this problem is to plan conflict-free trajectories and let each of the robots follow its pre-planned trajectory. A widely used practical method for multi-robot trajectory planning is prioritized planning, which has been shown to be effective in practice, but is in general incomplete. Formal analysis of instances that are provably solvable by prioritized planning is still missing. Moreover, prioritized planning is a centralized algorithm, which may be in many situations…

We study the problem of planning collision-free paths for a group of homogeneous robots. We propose a novel approach for turning the paths that were planned egocentrically by the robots, e.g. without taking other robots' moves into account, into collision-free trajectories and evaluate it empirically. Suggested algorithm is much faster (up to one order of magnitude) than state-of-the-art but this comes at the price of notable drop-down of the solution cost.
We present how we formalize the waiting tables task in a restaurant as a robot planning problem. In this paper, we deal with the problem of full-body path planning for walking robots. The state of walking robots is defined in multi-dimensional space. Path planning requires defining the path of the feet and the robot's body. Moreover, the planner should check multiple constraints like static stability, self-collisions, collisions with the terrain, and the legs' workspace. As a result, checking the feasibility of the potential path is time-consuming and influences the performance of a planning method. In this paper, we verify the feasibility of sampling-based planners in the path planning t…

Motion planning for multi-jointed robots is challenging. Due to the inherent complexity of the problem, most existing works decompose motion planning as easier subproblems. However, because of the inconsistent performance metrics, only sub-optimal solution can be found by decomposition based approaches. This paper presents an optimal control based approach to address the path planning and trajectory planning subproblems simultaneously. Unlike similar works which either ignore robot dynamics or require long computation time, an efficient numerical method for trajectory optimization is presented…
Robots interacting with the physical world plan with models of physics. We advocate that robots interacting with people need to plan with models of cognition. This writeup summarizes the insights we have gained in integrating computational cognitive models of people into robotics planning and control. We investigate different approaches to integrating object recognition and planning in a tabletop manipulation domain with the set of objects used in the 2012 RoboCup@Work competition. Solving a motion planning problem optimally using analytical methods is proven to be PSPACE-Hard. Sampling-based approaches have tried to approximate the optimal solution efficiently. Generally, sampling-based planners use uniform samplers to cover the entire state space. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning-based framework that identifies robot configurations in the environment that are important to solve the given motion planning problem. These st…

Motion planning is a difficult problem in robot control. The complexity of the problem is directly related to the dimension of the robot's configuration space. While in many theoretical calculations and practical applications the configuration space is modeled as a continuous space, we present a discrete robot model based on the fundamental hardware specifications of a robot. Using lattice path methods, we provide estimates for the complexity of motion planning by counting the number of possible trajectories in a discrete robot configuration space.

To plan tasks for robots efficiently, a single task planning unit is implemented with the proposed task types. The task planning unit assigns tasks to each robot simultaneously through a single …

Path planning for mobile robots in large dynamic environments is a challenging problem, as the robots are required to efficiently reach their given goals while simultaneously avoiding potential conflicts with other robots or dynamic objects. In the presence of dynamic obstacles, traditional solutions usually employ re-planning strategies, which re-call a planning algorithm to search for an alternative path whenever the robot encounters a conflict. However, such re-planning strategies often cause unnecessary detours. To address this issue, we propose a learning-based technique that exploits env…
