The general surface quasi-geostrophic equation is the scalar transport equation defined by \begin{equation*}
\frac{\partial θ}{\partial t}+v^γ_1 \frac{\partial θ}{\partial x_1}+v^γ_2 \frac{\partial θ}{\partial x_2} =0 ,
\end{equation*} where the velocity comes defined by
\begin{equation*}
v^γ=\nabla^{\perp} ψ_γ=\left(\partial_{2} ψ_γ,-\partial_{1} ψ_γ\right), \quad ψ_γ=-Λ^{-1+γ} θ,
\end{equation*} and $θ(\cdot,0)=θ_0(\cdot)$ is the initial condition. We consider the parameter $γ\in (-1,1)$ and the non-local operator $Λ^α=(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}$ is defined on the Fourier side by $\widehat{Λ^α f}(ξ)=|ξ|^α \widehat{f}(ξ)$.
The PDE is well-posed in the Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s>2+γ$.
In this paper we prove strong ill-posedness in the super-critical regime $H^β$ with $β\in [1,2+γ)\cap(\frac{3}{2}+γ,2+γ)$. To do this, we will derive an approximated PDE solvable by some family of functions that we will call pseudosolutions and that will allow us to control the norms of the real solutions.
Using this result and a gluing argument we also prove non-existence of solutions in the same Sobolev spaces. Since the pseudosolution will control the real one, we can build a solution that will be initially in $H^β$ and will leave it instantaneously. Nevertheless, this solution exists for a long time and remains the only classical solution in a high regularity class.
We construct solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with finite energy of the surface quasi-geostrophic equations (SQG) that initially are in $C^k$ ($k\geq 2$) but that are not in $C^{k}$ for $t>0$. We prove a similar result also for $H^{s}$ in the range $s\in(\frac32,2)$. Moreover, we prove strong ill-posedness in the critical space $H^{2}$.
We consider the subcritical SQG equation in its natural scale invariant Sobolev space and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal regularity. The proof is based on a new energy estimate in Sobolev spaces to bootstrap the regularity to the optimal level, derived by means of nonlinear lower bounds on the fractional laplacian. This estimate appears to be new in the literature, and allows a sharp use of the subcritical nature of the $L^\infty$ bounds for this problem. As a byproduct, we obtain attractors for weak solutions as well. Moreover, we study the critical limit of the attracto…
We consider the evolution of weak vanishing viscosity solutions to the critically dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation. Due to the possible non-uniqueness of solutions, we rephrase the problem as a set-valued dynamical system and prove the existence of a global attractor of optimal Sobolev regularity. To achieve this, we derive a new Sobolev estimate involving Hölder norms, which complement the existing estimates based on commutator analysis.
We consider the family known as modified or generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations (mSQG) consisting of the classical inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation together with a family of regularized active scalars given by introducing a smoothing operator of nonzero but possibly arbitrarily small degree. This family naturally interpolates between the 2D Euler equation and the SQG equation. For this family of equations we construct an invariant measure on a rough $L^2$-based Sobolev space and establish the existence of solutions of arbitrarily large lifespan for initial data in …
Patch solutions for the surface quasigeostrophic (SQG) equation model sharp temperature fronts in atmospheric and oceanic flows. We establish local well-posedness for SQG sharp fronts of low Sobolev regularity, $H^{2+s}$ for arbitrarily small $s>0$, allowing for fronts with unbounded curvature.
In this paper we consider the inviscid SQG equation on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^2)$, $s > 2$. Using a geometric approach we show that for any $T > 0$ the corresponding solution map, $θ(0) \mapsto θ(T)$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous.
We prove local well-posedness in the Sobolev spaces $\dot H^s(\mathbb{T})$, with $s>7/2$, for an initial value problem for a nonlocal, cubically nonlinear, dispersive equation that provides an approximate description of the evolution of surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) fronts with small slopes.
This paper studies a family of generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations for an active scalar $θ$ on the whole plane whose velocities have been mildly regularized, for instance, logarithmically. The well-posedness of these regularized models in borderline Sobolev regularity have previously been studied by D. Chae and J. Wu when the velocity $u$ is of lower singularity, i.e., $u=-\nabla^{\perp}Λ^{β-2}p(Λ)θ$, where $p$ is a logarithmic smoothing operator and $β\in [0,1]$. We complete this study by considering the more singular regime $β\in(1,2)$. The main tool is the identification o…
This paper studies the dissipative generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations in a supercritical regime where the order of the dissipation is small relative to order of the velocity, and the velocities are less regular than the advected scalar by up to one order of derivative. We also consider a non-degenerate modification of the endpoint case in which the velocity is less smooth than the advected scalar by slightly more than one order. The existence and uniqueness theory of these equations in the borderline Sobolev spaces is addressed, as well as the instantaneous smoothing effect of the…
In the present paper, we study the fast rotation and inviscid limits for the 2-D dissipative surface quasi-geostrophic equation with a dispersive forcing term $A \mathcal{R}_{1} \vartheta$, in the domain $Ω=\mathbb{T}^{1} \times \mathbb{R}$. In the case when we perform the fast rotation limit (keeping the viscosity fixed), in the context of general ill-prepared initial data, we prove that the limit dynamics is described by a linear equation. On the other hand, performing the combined fast rotation and inviscid limits, we show that the initial data $\overline{\vartheta}_{0}$ is transported alon…

In this paper, we considered the Cauchy problem for the Burgers equation and proved that the problem is ill-posed in Sobolev spaces $H^s$ with $s\in[1,\fr32)$.
We provide a simple proof that the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with any $d\ge3$ is ill-posed in critical Sobolev spaces, extending an earlier work of Bourgain and Li in the case $d = 3$. The ill-posedness is shown for certain critical Lorentz spaces as well.
We consider the initial value problem associated to the regularized Benjamin-Ono equation, rBO. Our aim is to establish local and global well-posedness results in weighted Sobolev spaces via contraction principle. We also prove a unique continuation property that implies that arbitrary polinomial type decay is not preserved yielding sharp results regarding well-posedness of the initial value problem in most weighted Sobolev spaces.
We consider solutions to the generalized Surface Quasi-geostrophic equation ($γ$-SQG) when the velocity is more singular than the active scalar function (i.e. $γ\in(0,1)$). In this paper we establish strong ill-posedness in $C^{k,β}$ ($k\geq 1$, $β\in(0,1]$ and $k+β>1+γ$) and we also construct solutions in $\mathbb{R}^2$ that initially are in $C^{k,β}\cap L^2$ but are not in $C^{k,β}$ for $t>0$. Furthermore these solutions stay in $H^{k+β+1-2δ}$ for some small $δ$ and an arbitrarily long time.
Large scale dynamics of the oceans and the atmosphere are governed by the primitive equations (PEs). It is well-known that the three-dimensional viscous PEs is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces. On the other hand, the inviscid PEs without rotation is known to be ill-posed in Sobolev spaces, and its smooth solutions can form singularity in finite time. In this paper, we extend the above results in the presence of rotation. First, we construct finite-time blowup solutions to the inviscid PEs with rotation, and establish that the inviscid PEs with rotation is ill-posed in Sobolev spaces in th…
Motivated by the paper by D. Gerard-Varet and E. Dormy [JAMS, 2010] about the linear ill-posedness for the Prandtl equations around a shear flow with exponential decay in normal variable, and the recent study of well-posedness on the Prandtl equations in Sobolev spaces, this paper aims to extend the result in \cite{GV-D} to the case when the shear flow has general decay. The key observation is to construct an approximate solution that captures the initial layer to the linearized problem motivated by the precise formulation of solutions to the inviscid Prandtl equations.
For the $2D$ Euler equation in vorticity formulation, we construct localized smooth solutions whose critical Sobolev norms become large in a short period of time, and solutions which initially belong to $L^\infty \cap H^1$ but escapes $H^1$ immediately for $t>0$. Our main observation is that a localized chunk of vorticity bounded in $L^\infty \cap H^1$ with odd-odd symmetry is able to generate a hyperbolic flow with large velocity gradient at least for a short period of time, which stretches the vorticity gradient.
Logarithmically regularized 2D Euler equations are active scalar equations with the non-local velocity $u = \nabla^\perp Δ^{-1}T_γω$ for the scalar $ω$. Two types of the regularizing operator $T_γ$ with a parameter $γ> 0$ are considered: $T_γ= \ln^{-γ} (e+|\nabla|)$ and $T_γ= \ln^{-γ} (e-Δ)$. These models regularize the 2D Euler equation for the vorticity (conventionally corresponding to the $γ=0$ case), which results in their local well-posedness in the borderline Sobolev space $H^1(\mathrm{R}^2)\cap\dot{H}^{-1}(\mathrm{R}^2)$ when $γ>\frac 12$. In this paper, we examine the regularized model…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the fourth order cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (4NLS). The main goal of this paper is to prove low regularity well-posedness and mild ill-posedness for (4NLS). We prove three results. First, we show that (4NLS) is locally well-posed in $H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right), s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$ using the Fourier restriction norm method. Second, we show that (4NLS) is globally well-posed in $H^s\left(\mathbb{R}\right),s\geq -\frac{1}{2}$. To prove this, we use the $I$-method with the correction term strategy presented in Colliander-Keel-Staffilani-Takaoka-Tao [7].…
In this note, we consider the ill-posedness issue for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular, we prove norm inflation based at every initial condition in negative Sobolev spaces below or at the scaling critical regularity.
We consider the Cauchy problem associated to the recently derived higher order hamiltonian model for unidirectional water waves and prove global existence for given data in the Sobolev space $H^s$, $s\geq 1$. We also prove an ill-posedness result by showing that the flow-map is not continuous if the given data has Sobolev regularity $s< 1$. The results obtained in this work are sharp.
We present ill-posedness results for the initial value problem (IVP) of the 5th-order Gardner equation. We use new breather solutions discovered for this higher order Gardner equation to measure the regularity of the Cauchy problem in Sobolev spaces $H^s$. We find the sharp Sobolev index under which the local well-posedness of the problem is lost, meaning that the dependence of 5th order Gardner solutions upon initial data fails to be continuous.
We proved the local well-posedness for the power-type nonlinear semi-relativistic or half-wave equation (NLHW) in Sobolev spaces. Our proofs mainly bases on the contraction mapping argument using Strichartz estimate. We also apply the technique of Christ-Colliander- Tao in \cite{ChristCollianderTao} to prove the ill-posedness for (NLHW) in some cases of the super-critical range.
Let $σ\in(0,1)$ with $σ\neq\frac{1}{2}$. We investigate the fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\mathbb R^d$: $$i\partial_tu+(-Δ)^σu+μ|u|^{p-1}u=0,\, u(0)=u_0\in H^s,$$ where $(-Δ)^σ$ is the Fourier multiplier of symbol $|ξ|^{2σ}$, and $μ=\pm 1$. This model has been introduced by Laskin in quantum physics \cite{laskin}. We establish local well-posedness and ill-posedness in Sobolev spaces for power-type nonlinearities.
We prove that the initial value problem associated to a perturbation of the Benjamin-Ono equation or Chen-Lee equation $u_t+uu_x+β\mathcal{H}u_{xx}+η(\mathcal{H}u_x - u_{xx})=0$, where $x\in \mathbb{T}$, $t> 0$, $η>0$ and $\mathcal{H}$ denotes the usual Hilbert transform, is locally and globally well-posed in the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\mathbb{T})$ for any $s>-\frac{1}{2}$. We also prove some ill-posedness issues when $s<-1$.
In this paper we consider Schr{ö}dinger equations with nonlinearities of odd order 2$σ$ + 1 on T^d. We prove that for $σ$d$\ge$2, they are strongly illposed in the Sobolev space H^s for any s \textless{} 0, exhibiting norm-inflation with infinite loss of regularity. In the case of the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation and its renormalized version we prove such a result for H^s with s \textless{} --2/3.
In this paper, we consider in $R^n$ the Cauchy problem for nonlinear Schrödinger equation with initial data in Sobolev space $W^{s,p}$ for $p<2$. It is well known that this problem is ill posed. However, We show that after a linear transformation by the linear semigroup the problem becomes locally well posed in $W^{s,p}$ for $\frac{2n}{n+1}<p<2$ and $s>n(1-\frac{1}{p})$. Moreover, we show that in one space dimension, the problem is locally well posed in $L^p$ for any $1<p<2$.
In this paper, we are concerned with the magnetic effect on the Sobolev solvability of boundary layer equations for the 2D incompressible MHD system without resistivity. The MHD boundary layer is described by the Prandtl type equations derived from the incompressible viscous MHD system without resistivity under the no-slip boundary condition on the velocity. Assuming that the initial tangential magnetic field does not degenerate, a local-in-time well-posedness in Sobolev spaces is proved without the monotonicity condition on the velocity field. Moreover, we show that if the tangential magnetic…
We study the nonlinear eigenvalue problem $-{\rm div}(a(|\nabla u|)\nabla u)=λ|u|^{q(x)-2}u$ in $Ω$, $u=0$ on $\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open set in $\RR^N$ with smooth boundary, $q$ is a continuous function, and $a$ is a nonhomogeneous potential. We establish sufficient conditions on $a$ and $q$ such that the above nonhomogeneous quasilinear problem has continuous families of eigenvalues. The proofs rely on elementary variational arguments. The abstract results of this paper are illustrated by the cases $a(t)=t^{p-2}\log (1+t^r)$ and $a(t)= t^{p-2} [\log (1+t)]^{-1}$.
We prove that the Cauchy problem for the dispersion generalized Benjamin-Ono equation \[\partial_t u+|\partial_x|^{1+α}\partial_x u+uu_x=0,\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\] is locally well-posed in the Sobolev spaces $H^s$ for $s>1-α$ if $0\leq α\leq 1$. The new ingredient is that we develop the methods of Ionescu, Kenig and Tataru \cite{IKT} to approach the problem in a less perturbative way, in spite of the ill-posedness results of Molinet, Saut and Tzvetkovin \cite{MST}. Moreover, as a bi-product we prove that if $0<α\leq 1$ the corresponding modified equation (with the nonlinearity $\pm uuu_x$) is locall…
We prove that the solution map, associated to the quintic fourth order nonlinear Schrödinger equation, exhibits the norm inflation phenomenon at every point in the Sobolev spaces of super-critical regularity. Indeed, we prove this result separately in the cases of negative and of positive regularity. In the negative regularity case, we prove the result for both the defocusing and focusing equations: in the one dimensional case, the associated solution map exhibits norm inflation in Sobolev spaces of super-critical regularity (including the critical index); in the higher dimensional case, the s…
We present a technique for derivation of a priori bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of space-periodic three-dimensional solutions to evolutionary partial differential equations of hydrodynamic type. It involves a transformation of the flow velocity in the Fourier space, which introduces a feedback between the index of the norm and the norm of the transformed solution, and results in emergence of a mildly dissipative term. To illustrate the technique, we derive finite-time bounds for Gevrey-Sobolev norms of solutions to the Euler and inviscid Burgers equations, and global in time bounds for the V…
In this paper we study the Cauchy problem for the semilinear heat and Schrödinger equations, with the nonlinear term $ f ( u ) = λ|u|^αu$. We show that low regularity of $f$ (i.e., $α>0$ but small) limits the regularity of any possible solution for a certain class of smooth initial data. We employ two different methods, which yield two different types of results. On the one hand, we consider the semilinear equation as a perturbation of the ODE $w_t= f(w)$. This yields in particular an optimal regularity result for the semilinear heat equation in Hölder spaces. In addition, this approach yields…
