Based on the seminal Simons' formula, Shen \cite{Shen} and Lin-Xia \cite{LX} obtained gap theorems for compact minimal submanifolds in the unit sphere in the late 1980's. Then due to the effect of Xu \cite{Xu}, Ni \cite{Ni}, Yun \cite{Yun} and Xu-Gu \cite{XuG}, we achieved a comprehensive understanding of gap phenomena of complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in the sphere or in the Euclidean space. But such kind of results in case of the hyperbolic space were obtained by Wang-Xia \cite{XiaW}, Lin-Wang \cite{LW} and Xu-Xu \cite{XX} until relatively recently and are not quite complete so far.
In this paper first we continue to study gap theorems for complete submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in the hyperbolic space, which generalize or extend several results in the literature. Second we prove a gap theorem for complete hypersurfaces with constant scalar curvature $n(1-n)$ in the hyperbolic space, which extends related results due to Bai-Luo \cite{BL2} in cases of the Euclidean space and the unit sphere. Such kind of results in case of the hyperbolic space are more complicated, due to some extra bad terms in the Simons' formula, and one of main ingredients of our proofs is an estimate for the first eigenvalue of complete submanifolds in the hyperbolic space obtained by Lin \cite{Lin}.
We use drifted Brownian motion in warped product model spaces as comparison constructions to show $p$-hyperbolicity of a large class of submanifolds for $p\ge 2$. The condition for $p$-hyperbolicity is expressed in terms of upper support functions for the radial sectional curvatures of the ambient space and for the radial convexity of the submanifold. In the process of showing $p$-hyperbolicity we also obtain explicit lower bounds on the $p$-capacity of finite annular domains of the submanifolds in terms of the drifted 2-capacity of the corresponding annuli in the respective comparison spaces.
We classify homogeneous CR submanifolds in complex hyperbolic spaces arising as orbits of a subgroup of the solvable part of the Iwasawa decomposition of the isometry group of the ambient space.
We prove that if an $n$-dimensional complete minimal submanifold $M$ in hyperbolic space has sufficiently small total scalar curvature then $M$ has only one end. We also prove that for such $M$ there exist no nontrivial $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on $M$.
This note introduces a notion of entropy for submanifolds of hyperbolic space analogous to the one introduced by Colding and Minicozzi for submanifolds of Euclidean space. Several properties are proved for this quantity including monotonicity along mean curvature flow in low dimensions and a connection with the conformal volume.
In this paper, we prove the nonexistence of $L^2$ harmonic 1-forms on a complete super stable minimal submanifold $M$ in hyperbolic space under the assumption that the first eigenvalue $λ_1 (M)$ for the Laplace operator on $M$ is bounded below by $(2n-1)(n-1)$. Moreover, we provide sufficient conditions for minimal submanifolds in hyperbolic space to be super stable.
We investigate complete minimal submanifolds $f\colon M^3\to\Hy^n$ in hyperbolic space with index of relative nullity at least one at any point. The case when the ambient space is either the Euclidean space or the round sphere was already studied in \cite{dksv1} and \cite{dksv2}, respectively. If the scalar curvature is bounded from below we conclude that the submanifold has to be either totally geodesic or a generalized cone over a complete minimal surface lying in an equidistant submanifold of $\Hy^n$.
In this paper we establish conditions on the length of the second fundamental form of a complete minimal submanifold $M^n$ in the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^{n+m}$ in order to show that $M^n$ is totally geodesic. We also obtain sharp upper bounds estimates for the first eigenvalue of the super stability operator in the case of $M$ is a surface in $\mathbb{H}^{4}$.
In this paper we construct new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex hyperbolic space with large symmetry groups, obtaining three 1-parameter families with cohomegeneity one. We characterize them as the only minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n foliated by umbilical hypersurfaces of Lagrangian subspaces RH^n of CH^n. Several suitable generalizations of the above construction allow us to get new families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in CH^n from curves in CH^1 and (n-1)-dimensional minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of the complex space forms CP^n-1, CH^n-1 and C^n-1.…
Minimal Submanifolds of The Complex and Quaternionic Projective and Hyperbolic Spaces $\cn P^{2n-1}$, $\hn P^{2n-1}$, $\cn H^{2n-1}$, $\hn H^{2n-1}$ via Harmonic Morphisms
We present several local and global results on isometric immersions of Kaehler manifolds $M^{2n}$ into hyperbolic space $\Hy^{2n+p}$. For instance, a classification is given in the case of dimension $n\geq 4$ and codimension $p=2$. Moreover, as corollaries of general results, we conclude that there are no isometric immersion in codimension $p\leq n-2$ if the Kaehler manifold is of dimension $n\geq 4$ and either has a point of positive holomorphic sectional curvature or is compact.
We consider the complex hyperbolic quadric ${Q^*}^n$ as a complex hypersurface of complex anti-de Sitter space. Shape operators of this submanifold give rise to a family of local almost product structures on ${Q^*}^n$, which are then used to define local angle functions on any Lagrangian submanifold of ${Q^*}^n$. We prove that a Lagrangian immersion into ${Q^*}^n$ can be seen as the Gauss map of a spacelike hypersurface of (real) anti-de Sitter space and relate the angle functions to the principal curvatures of this hypersurface. We also give a formula relating the mean curvature of the Lagran…
Let $Σ$ be a $k$-dimensional complete proper minimal submanifold in the Poincaré ball model $B^n$ of hyperbolic geometry. If we consider $Σ$ as a subset of the unit ball $B^n$ in Euclidean space, we can measure the Euclidean volumes of the given minimal submanifold $Σ$ and the ideal boundary $\partial_\infty Σ$, say $\rvol(Σ)$ and $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ)$, respectively. Using this concept, we prove an optimal linear isoperimetric inequality. We also prove that if $\rvol(\partial_\infty Σ) \geq \rvol(\mathbb{S}^{k-1})$, then $Σ$ satisfies the classical isoperimetric inequality. By proving the…
We show that an isoparametric submanifold of a complex hyperbolic plane, according to the definition of Heintze, Liu and Olmos', is an open part of a principal orbit of a polar action. We also show that there exists a non-isoparametric submanifold of the complex hyperbolic plane that is isoparametric according to the definition of Terng's. Finally, we classify Terng-isoparametric submanifolds of two-dimensional complex space forms.
In this paper, we prove that if the initial submanifold $M_0$ of dimension $n(\ge6)$ satisfies an optimal pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in hyperbolic spaces converges to a round point in finite time. In particular, we obtain the optimal differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in hyperbolic spaces. It should be emphasized that our pinching condition implies that the Ricci curvature of the initial submanifold is positive, but does not imply positivity of the sectional curvature of $M_0$.
In this paper we investigate the convergence for the mean curvature flow of closed submanifolds with arbitrary codimension in space forms. Particularly, we prove that the mean curvature flow deforms a closed submanifold satisfying a pinching condition in a hyperbolic space form to a round point in finite time.
We show a generic finiteness result for least area planes in 3-dimensional hyperbolic space. Moreover, we prove that the space of minimal immersions of disk into hyperbolic space is a submanifold of a product bundle over a space of immersions of circle into sphere at infinity. The bundle projection map when restricted to this submanifold is Fredholm of index zero. By using this result, we also show that the space of minimal planes with smooth boundary curve at infinity is a manifold.
We use techniques based on the splitting tensor to explicitly integrate the Codazzi equation along the relative nullity distribution and express the second fundamental form in terms of the Jacobi tensor of the ambient space. This approach allows us to easily recover several important results in the literature on complete submanifolds with relative nullity of the sphere as well as derive new strong consequences in hyperbolic and Euclidean spaces. Among the consequences of our main theorem are results on submanifolds with sufficiently high index of relative nullity, submanifolds with nonpositive…
In this paper we prove the existence of families of n-dimensional complete embedded minimal submanifolds of C^n with a prescribed configuration of k>1 asymptotic planes. These submanifolds are obtained by desingularizing the intersection of the asymptotes, using a gluing theorem applied to a generalization of a special lagrangian "hyperbola" found by Lawlor.
Using Legendrian immersions and, in particular, Legendre curves in odd dimensional spheres and anti De Sitter spaces, we provide a method of construction of new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces, including explicit one parameter families of embeddings of quotients of certain product manifolds. In addition, new examples of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in complex projective and hyperbolic spaces also appear. Making use of all of them, we get Hamiltonian-minimal and special Lagrangian cones in complex Euclidean space too.
In hyperbolic space $H^n$ we set a geodesic ball of radius $ρ$. Consider a $k$ dimensional minimal submanifold passing through the origin of the geodesic ball with boundary lies on the boundary of that geodesic ball. We prove that its area is no less than the totally geodesic $k$ dimensional submanifold passing through the origin in that geodesic ball. This is a partial generalization of the corresponding problem in $R^n$.
Motivated by spectral asymptotics for orbital integrals in a relative trace formula, we generalize a number of geometric properties of geodesics in the hyperbolic plane, to maximal flat submanifolds of symmetric spaces of non-compact type.
Given a complete isometric immersion $ϕ: P^m \longrightarrow N^n$ in an ambient Riemannian manifold $N^n$ with a pole and with radial sectional curvatures bounded from above by the corresponding radial sectional curvatures of a radially symmetric space $M^n_w$, we determine a set of conditions on the extrinsic curvatures of $P$ that guarantees that the immersion is proper and that $P$ has finite topology, in the line of the paper "On Submanifolds With Tamed Second Fundamental Form", (Glasgow Mathematical Journal, 51, 2009), authored by G. Pacelli Bessa and M. Silvana Costa. When the ambient ma…
We study the Gauss map and the dual variety of a real-analytic immersion of a connected compact real-analytic manifold into a sphere or into a hyperbolic space. The dual variety is defined to be the set of all normal directions of the immersion. First, we show that the image of the Gauss map characterizes the manifold. Also we show that the dual variety characterizes the manifold. Besides, duality of the second fundamental form and some results on degeneration are obtained. In Algebraic Geometry E-prints eight files are tar-compressed and uuencoded.
Let N be a complete, simply-connected surface of constant curvature κ\leq 0. Moreover, suppose that Ωand \tildeΩ are strictly convex domains in N with the same area. We show that there exists an area-preserving diffeomorphism from Ωto \tildeΩ whose graph is a minimal submanifold of N \times N.
We describe the asymptotic behavior of minimal area submanifolds in product spacetimes of an asymptotically hyperbolic space times a compact internal manifold. In particular, we find that unlike the case of a minimal area submanifold just in an asymptotically hyperbolic space, the internal part of the boundary submanifold is constrained to be itself a minimal area submanifold. For applications to holography, this tells us what are the allowed "flavor branes" that can be added to a holographic field theory. We also give a compact geometric expression for the spectrum of operator dimensions asso…
We prove a persistence result for noncompact normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds in the setting of Riemannian manifolds of bounded geometry. Bounded geometry of the ambient manifold is a crucial assumption required to control the uniformity of all estimates throughout the proof. The $C^{k,α}$-smoothness result is optimal with respect to the spectral gap condition involved. The core of the persistence proof is based on the Perron method. In the process we derive new results on noncompact submanifolds in bounded geometry: a uniform tubular neighborhood theorem and uniform smooth approximatio…
We describe several families of Lagrangian submanifolds in the complex Euclidean space which are H-minimal, i.e. critical points of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We make use of various constructions involving planar, spherical and hyperbolic curves, as well as Legendrian submanifolds of the odd-dimensional unit sphere.
Let H be the hyperbolic space of dimension n+1. A geodesic foliation of H is given by a smooth unit vector field on H all of whose integral curves are geodesics. Each geodesic foliation of H determines an n-dimensional submanifold M of the 2n-dimensional manifold L of all the oriented geodesics of H (up to orientation preserving reparametrizations). The space L has a canonical split semi-Riemannian metric induced by the Killing form of the isometry group of H. Using a split special Lagrangian calibration, we study the volume maximization problem for a certain class of geometrically distinguish…
We show that a totally geodesic submanifold of a symmetric space satisfying certain conditions admits an extension to a minimal submanifold of dimension one higher, and we apply this result to construct new examples of complete embedded minimal submanifolds in simply connected noncompact globally symmetric spaces.
New rigidity results for complete non-compact spacelike submanifolds of arbitrary codimension in plane fronted waves are obtained. Under appropriate assumptions, we prove that a complete spacelike submanifold in these spacetimes is contained in a characteristic lightlike hypersurface. Moreover, for a complete codimension two extremal submanifold in a plane fronted wave we show sufficient conditions to guarantee that it is a (totally geodesic) wavefront.
A submanifold in space forms satisfies the well-known DDVV inequality due to De Smet, Dillen, Verstraelen and Vrancken. The submanifold attaining equality in the DDVV inequality at every point is called Wintgen ideal submanifold. As conformal invariant objects, Wintgen ideal submanifolds are studied in this paper using the framework of Möbius geometry. We classify Wintgen ideal submanfiolds of dimension $m>2$ and arbitrary codimension when a canonically defined 2-dimensional distribution $\mathbb{D}$ is integrable. Such examples come from cones, cylinders, or rotational submanifolds over super…
We give a new method for manufacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then apply our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.
In this paper we obtain an existence theorem for normal geodesics joining two given submanifolds in a globally hyperbolic stationary spacetime. The proof is based on both variational and geometric arguments involving the causal structure of the spacetime, the completeness of suitable Finsler metrics associated to it and some basic properties of a submersion. By this interaction, unlike previous results on the topic, also non--spacelike submanifolds can be handled.
We investigate the homogeneity of certain kind of slices of the complete complexification of a proper complex equifocal submanifold in a symmetric space of non-compact type.
It is very well known that Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex projective space can be locally characterized as tubes over complex submanifolds. This also holds true for some, but not all, Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space. The main goal of this paper is to show, in a unified way, how to construct Hopf real hypersurfaces in the complex hyperbolic space from a horizontal submanifold in one of the three twistor spaces of the indefinite complex $2$-plane Grassmannian with respect to the natural para-quaternionic Kähler structure. We also identify these twistor spaces with…
We show that a complete Euclidean submanifold with minimal index of relative nullity $ν_0>0$ and Ricci curvature with a certain controlled decay must be a $ν_0$-cylinder. This is an extension of the classical Hartman cylindricity theorem.
Let Σbe a complete minimal Lagrangian submanifold of \C^n. We identify regions in the Grassmannian of Lagrangian subspaces so that whenever the image of the Gauss map of Σlies in one of these regions, then Σis an affine space.
We study curvature-adapted submanifolds of general symmetric spaces. We generalize Cartan's theorem for isoparametric hypersurfaces of spheres and Wang's classification of isoparametric Hopf hypersurfaces in complex projective spaces to any compact symmetric space. Our second objective is to investigate such hypersurfaces in some specific symmetric spaces. Various classification results in the Cayley projective and hyperbolic planes and in complex two-plane Grassmannians are obtained under some additional assumptions.
We prove a Simons type formula for submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector field in product spaces of type $M^n(c)\times\mathbb{R}$, where $M^n(c)$ is a space form with constant sectional curvature $c$, and then we use it to characterize some of these submanifolds.
Using a deep criteria due to Pigola, Rigoli and Setti, we prove that a geodesically complete, properly immersed submanifold M of a stochastically complete Riemannian manifold N is stochastically complete. This implies that the weak Omori-Yau maximum principle holds on M. As geometric application, we prove sectional curvature estimates for properly immersed cilindrically bounded submanifolds.
