In this paper, we study two kinds of nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations containing the Grushin operator. First, we prove radial symmetry and a decay rate at infinity of solutions to such a Grushin equation by using the moving plane method in combination with suitable integral inequalities. Applying similar methods, we obtain nonexistence results for solutions to a second type of Grushin equation in Euclidean half space. Finally, we derive a priori estimates and the existence for positive solutions to more general types of Grushin equations by employing blow up analysis and topological degree methods, respectively.
The paper treats second order fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations having a family of subunit vector fields satisfying a full-rank bracket condition. It studies Liouville properties for viscosity sub- and supersolutions in the whole space, namely, that under a suitable bound at infinity from above and, respectively, from below, they must be constants. In a previous paper we proved an abstract result and discussed operators on the Heisenberg group. Here we consider various families of vector fields: the generators of a Carnot group, with more precise results for those of step 2, in par…
We study the local well-posedness of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation associated to the Grushin operator with random initial data. To the best of our knowledge, no well-posedness result is known in the Sobolev spaces $H^k$ when $k \leq \frac{3}{2}$. In this article, we prove that there exists a large family of initial data such that, with respect to a suitable randomization in $H^k$, $k \in (1,\frac{3}{2}]$, almost-sure local well-posedness holds. The proof relies on bilinear and trilinear estimates.
We describe weighted Plancherel estimates and sharp Hebisch-Müller-Stein type spectral multiplier result for a new class of Grushin type operators. We also discuss the optimal exponent for Bochner-Riesz summability in this setting.
In this work we study the existence of nontrivial solution for the following class of semilinear degenerate elliptic equations $$ -Δ_γ u + a(z)u = f(u) ~~ \mbox{in} ~~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, $$ where $Δ_γ$ is known as the {\it Grushin operator}, $z:=(x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{k}$ and $m+k=N\geq 3$, $f$ and $a$ are continuous function satisfying some technical conditions. In order to overcome some difficulties involving this type of operator, we have proved some compactness results that are crucial in the proof of our main results. For the case $a=1$, we have showed a Berestycki-Lions typ…
This paper is devoted to the study of the internal null-controllability of the Grushin equation. We determine the minimal time of controllability for a large class of non-rectangular control region. We establish the positive result thanks to the fictitious control method and the negative one by interpreting the associated observability inequality as an $L^2$ estimate on complex polynomials.
Beals, Gaveau, and Greiner in 1996 establish a formula for the fundamental solution to the Laplace equation with drift term in Grushin-type planes. The first author and Childers in 2013 expanded these results by invoking a p-Laplace-type generalization that encompasses these formulas while the authors explored a different natural generalization of the p-Laplace equation with drift term that also encompasses these formulas. In both, the drift term lies in the complex domain. We extend these results by considering a drift term in the quaternion realm and show our solutions are stable under limit…
Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren, we establish an optimal bound on the vanishing order of solutions to stationary Schrödinger equations associated to a class of subelliptic equations with variable coefficients whose model is the so-called Baouendi-Grushin operator. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation that can be thought of as an analogue of the recent results of Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.
We investigate here the following weighted degenerate elliptic system \begin{align*} -Δ_{s} u = \Big(1+\|\mathbf{x}\|^{2(s+1)}\Big)^{\fracα{2(s+1)}} v^p, \quad -Δ_{s} v = \Big(1+\|\mathbf{x}\|^{2(s+1)}\Big)^{\fracα{2(s+1)}}u^θ, \quad u,v>0\quad\mbox{in }\; \mathbb{R}^N:=\mathbb{R}^{N_1}\times \mathbb{R}^{N_2}. \end{align*} where $Δ_{s}=Δ_{x}+|x|^{2s}Δ_{y},$ is the Grushin operator, $s \geq 0,$ $α\geq 0$ and $1<p\leqθ.$ Here $$\|\mathbf{x}\|=\Big(|x|^{2(s+1)}+|y|^2\Big)^{\frac{1}{2(s+1)}}, \;\mbox{and}\;\; \mathbf{x}:=(x, y)\in \mathbb{R}^N:=\mathbb{R}^{N_1}\times \mathbb{R}^{N_2}.$$ In particu…
Beals, Gaveau and Greiner (1996) find the fundamental solution to a 2-Laplace-type equation in a class of sub-Riemannian spaces. This solution is related to the well-known fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation in Grushin-type spaces (Bieske-Gong, 2006) and the Heisenberg group (Capogna, Danielli, Garofalo, 1997). We extend the 2-Laplace-type equation to a p-Laplace-type equation. We show that the obvious generalization does not have desired properties, but rather, our generalization preserves some natural properties.
In this paper we are concerned with a class of double phase energy functionals arising in the theory of transonic flows. Their main feature is that the associated Euler equation is driven by the Baouendi-Grushin operator with variable coefficient. This partial differential equation is of mixed type and possesses both elliptic and hyperbolic regions. After establishing a weighted inequality for the Baouendi-Grushin operator and a related compactness property, we establish the existence of stationary waves under arbitrary perturbations of the reaction.
We find fundamental solutions to p-Laplace equations with drift terms in the Heisenberg group and Grushin-type planes. These solutions are natural generalizations to the fundamental solutions discovered by Beals, Gaveau, and Greiner for the Laplace equation with drift term. Our results are independent of the results of Bieske and Childers, in that Bieske and Childers consider a generalization that focuses on a p-Laplace-type equation while we primarily concentrate on a generalization of the drift term.
In this paper, we obtain new Carleman estimates for a class of variable coefficient degenerate elliptic operators whose constant coefficient model at one point is the so called Baouendi-Grushin operator. This generalizes the results obtained by the two of us with Garofalo in [9] where similar estimates were established for the "constant coefficient" Baouendi-Grushin operator. Consequently, we obtain: (i) a Bourgain-Kenig type quantitative uniqueness result in the variable coefficient setting; (ii) and a strong unique continuation property for a class of degenerate sublinear equations. We also …
This paper studies Liouville properties for viscosity sub- and supersolutions of fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic PDEs, under the main assumption that the operator has a family of generalized subunit vector fields that satisfy the Hörmander condition. A general set of sufficient conditions is given such that all subsolutions bounded above are constant; it includes the existence of a supersolution out of a big ball, that explodes at infinity. Therefore for a large class of operators the problem is reduced to finding such a Lyapunov-like function. This is done here for the vector fields that …
We derive Hardy type inequalities for a large class of sub-elliptic operators that belong to the class of $Δ_λ$-Laplacians and find explicit values for the constants involved. Our results generalize previous inequalities obtained for Grushin type operators $$ Δ_{x}+ |x|^{2α}Δ_{y},\qquad\ (x,y)\in\mathbb{R}^{N_1}\times\mathbb{R}^{N_2},\ α\geq 0, $$ which were proved to be sharp.
We prove a Harnack inequality for a class of two-weight degenerate elliptic operators. The metric distance is induced by continuous Grushin-type vector fields. It is not know whether there exist cutoffs fitting the metric balls. This obstacle is bypassed by means of a covering argument that allows the use of rectangles in the Moser iteration.

We find the fundamental solution to the p-Laplace equation in a class of Hörmander vector fields that generate neither a Carnot group nor a Grushin-type space. The singularity occurs at the sub-Riemannian points which naturally corresponds to finding the fundamental solution of a generalized operator in Euclidean space. We then use this solution to find an infinite harmonic function with specific boundary data and to compute the capacity of annuli centered at the singularity.
In this article, motivated by a work of Caffarelli and Cordoba in phase transitions analysis, we prove new weighted anisotropic Sobolev type inequalities, that is Sobolev type inequalities where different derivatives have different weight functions. The inequalities we are dealing with, are also intimately connected to weighted Sobolev inequalities for Grushin type operators, the weights being not necessarily Muckenhoupt. For example we consider here Sobolev inequalities on finite cylinders, the weights being different powers of the distance function from the top and the bottom of the cylinder…
Let M = R n or possibly a Riemannian, non compact manifold. We consider semi-excited resonances for a h-differential operator H(x, hD x ; h) on L 2 (M) induced by a non-degenerate periodic orbit $γ$ 0 of semi-hyperbolic type, which is contained in the non critical energy surface {H 0 = 0}. By semi-hyperbolic, we mean that the linearized Poincar{é} map dP 0 associated with $γ$ 0 has at least one eigenvalue of modulus greater (or less) than 1, and one eigenvalue of modulus equal to 1, and by non-degenerate that 1 is not an eigenvalue, which implies a family $γ$(E) with the same properties. It is…
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties of viscosity solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear parabolic equations in $\mathbb{R}^n\times (0,T)$. We also include an application to some doubly nonlinear equations.
In this paper, we establish a global $C^2$ estimates to the Neumann problem for a class of fullly nonlinear elliptic equations. By the method of continuity, we establish the existence theorem of $k$-admissible solutions of the Neumann problems.
In this paper we consider a class of fully nonlinear equations which cover the equation introduced by S. Donaldson a decade ago and the equation introduced by Gursky-Streets recently. We solve the equation with uniform weak $C^2$ estimates, which hold for degenerate case.
In this paper, we consider a class of nonlinear Choquard equations with critical growth, and we show the existence of solutions of the equations. Besides, we consider the corresponding minimizing problem and prove the existence of a minimizer.
We prove the symmetry of components and some Liouville-type theorems for, possibly sign changing, entire distributional solutions to a family of nonlinear elliptic systems encompassing models arising in Bose-Einstein condensation and in nonlinear optics. For these models we also provide precise classification results for non-negative solutions. The sharpness of our results is also discussed.
In this paper, we establish a priori estimates for a class of fully nonlinear equations with Neumann boundary conditions. By the continuity method, we have obtained the existence theorem for the Neumann problem.
We prove that entire bounded monotone solutions to a certain class of fully nonlinear equations in 2D are one-dimensional. Our result also gives a new (non-variational) proof of the well known De Giorgi's conjecture.
In this note we give an alternative, shorter proof of the classical result of Berestycki and Cazenave on the instability by blow-up for the standing waves of some nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
We study Phragmén-Lindelöf properties for viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear parabolic equations of the type $H(Du, D^2u+Z(u)Du\otimes Du)+χ(t)|Du|^σ-u_t=0$ under a certain boundedness condition on $H$. We also state results for positive solutions to a class of doubly nonlinear equation $H(Du, D^2u)-f(u)u_t=0$.
We establish an optimal C^{1,α}-regularity for viscosity solutions of degenerate/singular fully nonlinear elliptic equations by finding minimal regularity requirements on the associated operator.
We prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for a family of nonlinear parabolic systems related to phase field models taking in account variations of temperature and the possibility of a general class of nonlinearities. The present results generalizes in certain aspects the already published ones in the literature.
We consider a nonlinear Timoshenko system of partial differential equations (PDEs) with a frictional damping term in rotation angle. The nonlinearity is due to the arbitrary dependence on the rotation moment. A Lie symmetry group classification of the arbitrary function of rotation moment is presented. An optimal system of one-dimensional subalgebras of the nonlinear damped Timoshenko system is derived for all the non-linear cases. All possible invariant variables of the optimal systems for the three non-linear cases are presented. The corresponding reduced systems of ordinary differential equ…
We study a class of elliptic problems with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and a nonlinear reaction term $f$ which is nonlocal depending on the $L^{p}$-norm of the unknown function. The nonlinearity $f$ can make the problem degenerate since it may even have multiple singularities in the nonlocal variable. We use fixed point arguments for an appropriately defined solution map to produce multiplicity of classical positive solutions with ordered norms.
We provide the Alexandroff-Bakelman-Pucci estimate and global $C^{1, α}$-regularity for a class of singular/degenerate fully nonlinear elliptic equations. We also derive the existence of a viscosity solution to the Dirichlet problem with the associated operator.
We study a class of initial boundary value problems of hyperbolic type. A new topological approach is applied to prove the existence of non-negative classical solutions. The arguments are based upon a recent theoretical result.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations in a ball, as the exponent of the power nonlinearity approaches a critical value. We show that solutions concentrate and blow up at the center of the ball, while a suitable associated energy remains invariant.
We consider a class of nonlinear integro-differential operators and prove existence of two principal (half) eigenvalues in bounded smooth domains with exterior Dirichlet condition. We then establish simplicity of the principal eigenfunctions in viscosity sense, maximum principles, continuity property of the principal eigenvalues with respect to domains etc. We also prove an anti-maximum principle and study existence result for some nonlinear problem via Rabinowitz bifurcation-type results.
We shall study special regularity properties of solutions to some nonlinear dispersive models. The goal is to show how regularity on the initial data is transferred to the solutions. This will depend on the spaces where regularity is measured.
We provide a representation formula for viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear second order parabolic PDEs given as a sup--envelope function. This is done through a dynamic programming principle derived from Denis, Hu, Peng (2010). The formula can be seen as a nonlinear extension of the Feynman--Kac formula and is based on the backward stochastic differential equations theory.
