In this paper, we obtain new Carleman estimates for a class of variable coefficient degenerate elliptic operators whose constant coefficient model at one point is the so called Baouendi-Grushin operator. This generalizes the results obtained by the two of us with Garofalo in [9] where similar estimates were established for the "constant coefficient" Baouendi-Grushin operator. Consequently, we obtain: (i) a Bourgain-Kenig type quantitative uniqueness result in the variable coefficient setting; (ii) and a strong unique continuation property for a class of degenerate sublinear equations. We also derive a subelliptic version of a scaling critical Carleman estimate proven by Regbaoui in the Euclidean setting using which we deduce a new unique continuation result in the case of scaling critical Hardy type potentials.
We consider a time-dependent structured population model equation and establish a Carleman estimate. We apply the Carleman estimate to prove the unique continuation which means that Cauchy data on any lateral boundary determine the solution uniquely.
We obtain a unique continuation result for fractional Schrödinger operators with potential in Morrey spaces. This is based on Carleman inequalities for fractional Laplacians.
This work is devoted to the strong unique continuation problem for second order parabolic equations with nonsmooth coefficients. Introduction and bibliography have been revised.
In this paper we establish some new $L^{2}-L^{2}$ Carleman estimates for the Baouendi-Grushin operators $\mathscr{B}_γ$, in (1.1) below. We apply such estimates to obtain: (i) an extension of the Bourgain-Kenig quantitative unique continuation; (ii) the strong unique continuation property for some degenerate sublinear equations.
In this article we deal with different forms of the unique continuation property for second order elliptic equations with nonlinear potentials of sublinear growth. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we prove the weak and the strong unique continuation property. Moreover, we also discuss the unique continuation property from measurable sets, which shows that nodal domains to these equations must have vanishing Lebesgue measure. Our methods rely on suitable Carleman estimates, for which we include the sublinear potential into the main part of the operator.
We obtain a complete characterization of $L^p-L^q$ Carleman estimates with weight $e^{v\cdot x}$ for the polyharmonic operators. Our result extends the Carleman inequalities for the Laplacian due to Kenig--Ruiz--Sogge. Consequently, we obtain new unique continuation properties of higher order Schrödinger equations relaxing the integrability assumption on the solution spaces.
In this work, we prove a Carleman estimate for a parabolic problem which has a dissipative degenerate term. The prove relies on choose a suitable weight function that change of sign inside the control domain.
We show Carleman estimates, observability inequalities and null controllability results for parabolic equations with non smooth coefficients degenerating at an interior point.
In this paper we consider a degenerate population equation in divergence form depending on time, on age and on space and we prove a related null controllability result via Carleman estimates.
In this paper, we study the null controllability of weakly degenerate coupled parabolic systems with two different diffusion coefficients and one control force. To obtain this aim, we develop first new global Carleman estimates for degenerate parabolic equations with weight functions different from the ones in the previous works.
We prove logarithmic convexity estimates and three balls inequalities for discrete magnetic Schrödinger operators. These quantitatively connect the discrete setting in which the unique continuation property fails and the continuum setting in which the unique continuation property is known to hold under suitable regularity assumptions. As a key auxiliary result which might be of independent interest we present a Carleman estimate for these discrete operators.
We consider non smooth general degenerate/singular parabolic equations in non divergence form with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain, in presence of Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we consider well posedness of the problem and then we prove Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem.
We deal with a degenerate model describing the dynamics of a population depending on time, on age and on space. We assume that the degeneracy can occur at the boundary or in the interior of the space domain and we focus on null controllability problem. To this aim, we prove first Carleman estimates for the associated adjoint problem, then, via cut off functions, we prove the existence of a null control function localized in the interior of the space domain.
In this paper, we give the strong unique continuation property for a general two dimensional anisotropic elliptic system with real coefficients in a Gevrey class under the assumption that the principal symbol of the system has simple characteristics. The strong unique continuation property is derived by obtaining some Carleman estimate. The derivation of the Carleman estimate is based on transforming the system to a larger second order elliptic system with diagonal principal part which has complex coefficients.
This paper concerns about the weak unique continuation property of solutions of a general system of differential equation/inequality with a second order strongly elliptic system as its leading part. We put not only some natural assumption which called {\sl basic assumptions}, but also some technical assumptions which we called {\sl further assumptions}. It is shown as usual by first applying the Holmgren transform to this inequality and then establishing a Carleman estimate for the leading part of the transformed inequality. The Carleman estimate given via a partition of unity and Carleman est…
A Carleman estimate and the unique continuation of solutions for an anomalous diffusion equation with fractional time derivative of order $0<α<1$ are given. The estimate is derived via some subelliptic estimate for an operator associated to the anomalous diffusion equation using calculus of pseudo-differential operators.
In this paper, we derive a local unique continuation property for stochastic hyperbolic equations without boundary conditions. This result is proved by a global Carleman estimate.
In this paper, we present a new Carleman estimate for the adjoint equations associated to a class of super strong degenerate parabolic linear problems. Our approach considers a standard geometric imposition on the control domain, which can not be removed in the general situations. Additionally, we also apply the aformentioned main inequality in order to investigate the null controllability of two nonlinear parabolic systems. The first application is concerned a global null controllability result obtained for some semilinear equations, relying on a fixed point argument. In the second one, a loc…
We investigate the quantitative unique continuation properties of solutions to second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms. The main theorem presents a quantification of the strong unique continuation property for $Δ+ V$. That is, for any non-trivial $u$ that solves $Δu + V u = 0$ in some open, connected subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$, we estimate the vanishing order of solutions in terms of the $L^t$-norm of $V$. Our results apply to all $t > \frac n 2$ and $n \ge 3$. With these maximal order of vanishing estimates, we employ a scaling argument to produce quantitative unique con…
We consider elliptic transmission problems with complex coefficients across an interface. Under proper transmission conditions, that extend known conditions for well-posedness, and sub-ellipticity we derive microlocal and local Carleman estimates near the interface. Carleman estimates are weighted a priori estimates of the solutions of the elliptic transmission problem. The weight is of exponential form, exp($tau$ ϕ) where $tau$ can be taken as large as desired. Such estimates have numerous applications in unique continuation, inverse problems, and control theory. The proof relies on microloca…
Quantitative unique continuation principles for multiscale structures are an important ingredient in a number applications, e.g. random Schrödinger operators and control theory. We review recent results and announce new ones regarding quantitative unique continuation principles for partial differential equations with an underlying multiscale structure. They concern Schrödinger and second order elliptic operators. An important feature is that the estimates are scale free and with quantitative dependence on parameters. These unique continuation principles apply to functions satisfying certain `r…
We establish a strong unique continuation property for stochastic parabolic equations. Our method is based on a suitable stochastic version of Carleman estimate. As far as we know, this is the first result for strong unique continuation property of stochastic partial differential equations.
In this paper we study unique continuation theorems for magnetic Schrödinger equation via Carleman estimates. We use integration by parts techniques in order to show these estimates. We consider electric and magnetic potentials with strong singularities at the origin and some decay at infinity.
We derive a unique continuation theorem for the vacuum Einstein equations. Our method of proof utilizes Carleman estimates (most importantly one obtained recently by Ionescu and Klainerman), but also relies strongly on certain geometric gauge constructions which make it possible to address this problem via such estimates. We indicate how our method can be used more broadly to derive unique continuation for Einstein's equations from Carleman estimates for the wave operator.
This article deals with the weak and strong unique continuation principle for fractional Schrödinger equations with scaling-critical and rough potentials via Carleman estimates. Our methods allow to apply the results to variable coefficient versions of fractional Schrödinger equations.
We consider the problem of the strong unique continuation for an elasticity system with general residual stress. Due to the known counterexamples, we assume the coefficients of the elasticity system are in the Gevrey class of appropriate indices. The main tools are Carleman estimates for product of two second order elliptic operators.
We investigate the quantitative unique continuation of solutions to higher order elliptic equations with singular coefficients. Quantitative unique continuation described by the vanishing order is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize the vanishing order of solutions for higher order elliptic equations in terms of the norms of coefficient functions in their respective Lebesgue spaces. New versions of quantitative Carleman estimates are established.
We prove a unique continuation result for an ill-posed characteristic problem. A model problem of this type occurs in A.D.~Ionescu \& S.~Klainerman article (Theorem 1.1 in \cite{MR2470908}) and we extend their model-result using only geometric assumptions. The main tools are Carleman estimates and Hörmander's pseudo-convexity conditions.
In this paper, we establish space like strong unique continuation property (sucp) for uniformly parabolic sublinear equations under appropriate structural assumptions. Our main result Theorem 1.1 constitutes the parabolic counterpart of the strong unique continuation result recently established by Ruland in [Ru] for analogous elliptic sublinear equations. Similar to that in [Ru], this is accomplished via a new $L^{2}-L^{2}$ type Carleman estimate for a class of sublinear parabolic operators.
We use Pitt inequalities for the Fourier transform to prove the following weighted gradient inequality $$ \|e^{-τ\ell(\cdot)} u^{\frac 1q} f\|_q\leq c_τ\| e^{-τ\ell(\cdot)} v^{\frac 1p}\, \nabla f\|_p, \quad f\in C^\infty_0( R^n). $$ This inequality is a Carleman-type estimate that yields unique continuation results for solutions of first order differential equations and systems.
We establish Carleman estimates for singular/degenerate parabolic Dirichlet problems with degeneracy and singularity occurring in the interior of the spatial domain. Our results are completely new, since this situation is not covered by previous contributions for degeneracy and singularity on the boundary. In addition, we consider non smooth coefficients, thus preventing the use of standard calculations in this framework.
We obtain a unique continuation result for the differential inequality $| (i\partial_t +Δ)u | \leq |Vu| + | W\cdot\nabla u |$ by establishing $L^2$ Carleman estimates. Here, $V$ is a scalar function and $W$ is a vector function, which may be time-dependent or time-independent. As a consequence, we give a similar result for the magnetic Schrödinger equation.
We obtain a global unique continuation result for the differential inequality $|(i\partial_t+Δ)u|\leq|V(x)u|$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. This is the first result on global unique continuation for the Schrödinger equation with time-independent potentials $V(x)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. Our method is based on a new type of Carleman estimates for the operator $i\partial_t+Δ$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$. As a corollary of the result, we also obtain a new unique continuation result for some parabolic equations.
This work is devoted to prove the exponential decay for the energy of solutions of a higher order Korteweg -de Vries (KdV)--Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation on a periodic domain with a localized damping mechanism. Following the method in [11], which combines energy estimates, multipliers and compactness arguments, the problem is reduced to prove the Unique Continuation Property (UCP) for weak solutions of the model. Then, this is done by deriving Carleman estimates for a system of coupled elliptic-hyperbolic equations.
The aim of these notes is to describe some recent results concerning dispersive estimates for principally normal pseudodifferential operators. The main motivation for this comes from unique continuation problems. Such estimates can be used to prove Carleman inequalities, which in turn yield unique continuation results for various partial differential operators with rough potentials.
In this paper we prove an observability inequality for a degenerate transport equation. First we introduce a local in time Carleman estimate for the degenerate equation, then we apply it to obtain a global in time observability inequality by using also an energy estimate.
We prove strong unique continuation property for the differential inequality $|(\partial_t +Δ)u(x,t)|\le V(x,t)|u(x,t)|$ with $V$ contained in weak spaces. In particular, we establish the strong unique continuation property for $V\in L^\infty_t L^{d/2,\infty}_x$, which has been left open since the works of Escauriaza [6] and Escauriaza-Vega [8]. Our results are consequences of the Carleman estimates for the heat operator in the Lorentz spaces.
In this article we study the strong unique continuation property for solutions of higher order (variable coefficient) fractional Schrödinger operators. We deduce the strong unique continuation property in the presence of subcritical and critical Hardy type potentials. In the same setting, we address the unique continuation property from measurable sets of positive Lebesgue measure. As applications we prove the antilocality of the higher order fractional Laplacian and Runge type approximation theorems which have recently been exploited in the context of nonlocal Calderón type problems. As our m…
This paper discusses the unique continuation principal of the solutions of the following perturbed fourth order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{L}_{A,q}u=0$, where \[ \mathcal{L}_{A,q}(x,D)\ =\ \sum_{j=1}^nD^4_{x_j} + \sum_{j=1}^n A_jD_{x_j} + q, \qquad (A, q) \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}^n) \times L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}) \] whose principal term is not given by some integer power of the Laplacian operator. We derive some suitable Carleman estimates which is the main tool to prove the unique continuation principle. As a by-product, we also deduce some stability estimate and prove the…
This paper is devoted to Bresse systems, a robust model for circular beams, given by a set of three coupled wave equations. The main objective is to establish the existence of global attractors for dynamics of semilinear problems with localized damping. In order to deal with localized damping a unique continuation property (UCP) is needed. Therefore we also provide a suitable UCP for Bresse systems. Our strategy is to set the problem in a Riemannian geometry framework and see the system as a single equation with different Riemann metrics. Then we perform Carleman-type estimates to get our resu…
This paper is devoted to a study of the unique continuation property for stochastic parabolic equations. Due to the adapted nature of solutions in the stochastic situation, classical approaches to treat the the unique continuation problem for deterministic equations do not work. Our method is based on a suitable partial Holmgren coordinate transform and a stochastic version of Carleman-type estimate.
In this paper we analyze some properties of a sixth order elliptic operator arising in the framework of the strain gradient linear elasticity theory for nanoplates in flexural deformation. We first rigorously deduce the weak formulation of the underlying Neumann problem as well as its well posedness. Under some suitable smoothness assumptions on the coefficients and on the geometry we derive interior and boundary regularity estimates for the solution of the Neumann problem. Finally, for the case of isotropic materials, we obtain new Strong Unique Continuation results in the interior, in the fo…
In this article we prove quantitative unique continuation results for wave operators of the form $\partial$ 2 t -- div(c(x)$\nabla$$\bullet$) where the scalar coefficient c is discontinuous across an interface of codimension one in a bounded domain or on a compact Riemannian manifold. We do not make any assumptions on the geometry of the interface or on the sign of the jumps of the coefficient c. The key ingredient is a local Carleman estimate for a wave operator with discontinuous coefficients. We then combine this estimate with the recent techniques of Laurent-L{é}autaud [LL19] to propagate …
A Carleman estimate and the unique continuation property of solutions for a multi-terms time fractional diffusion equation up to order $α\,\,(0<α<2)$ and general time dependent second order strongly elliptic time elliptic operator for the diffusion. The estimate is derived via some subelliptic estimate for an operator associated to this equation using calculus of pseudo-differential operators. A special Holmgren type transformation which is linear with respect to time is used to show the local unique continuation of solutions. We developed a new argument to derive the global unique continuatio…
