This paper discusses the unique continuation principal of the solutions of the following perturbed fourth order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{L}_{A,q}u=0$, where \[ \mathcal{L}_{A,q}(x,D)\ =\ \sum_{j=1}^nD^4_{x_j} + \sum_{j=1}^n A_jD_{x_j} + q, \qquad (A, q) \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}^n) \times L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}) \] whose principal term is not given by some integer power of the Laplacian operator. We derive some suitable Carleman estimates which is the main tool to prove the unique continuation principle. As a by-product, we also deduce some stability estimate and prove the strong unique continuation principle in $2$-dimension.
We obtain a unique continuation result for fractional Schrödinger operators with potential in Morrey spaces. This is based on Carleman inequalities for fractional Laplacians.
In this article, for a fourth-order parabolic equation which is closely related for example to the Cahn-Hilliard equation, we study an inverse source problem by interior data and the continuation of solution from lateral Cauchy data. Our method relies on a Carleman estimate and proves conditional stability for both problems.
We study various qualitative and quantitative (global) unique continuation properties for the fractional discrete Laplacian. We show that while the fractional Laplacian enjoys striking rigidity properties in the form of (global) unique continuation properties, the fractional discrete Laplacian does not enjoy these in general. While discretization thus counteracts the strong rigidity properties of the continuum fractional Laplacian, by discussing quantitative forms of unique continuation, we illustrate that these properties can be recovered if exponentially small (in the lattice size) correctio…
In this article we study the strong unique continuation property for solutions of higher order (variable coefficient) fractional Schrödinger operators. We deduce the strong unique continuation property in the presence of subcritical and critical Hardy type potentials. In the same setting, we address the unique continuation property from measurable sets of positive Lebesgue measure. As applications we prove the antilocality of the higher order fractional Laplacian and Runge type approximation theorems which have recently been exploited in the context of nonlocal Calderón type problems. As our m…
We investigate unique continuation properties and asymptotic behaviour at boundary points for solutions to a class of elliptic equations involving the spectral fractional Laplacian. An extension procedure leads us to study a degenerate or singular equation on a cylinder, with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on the lateral surface and a non homogeneous Neumann condition on the basis. For the extended problem, by an Almgren-type monotonicity formula and a blow-up analysis, we classify the local asymptotic profiles at the edge where the transition between boundary conditions occurs. Pa…
The fourth-order quasilinear reaction-diffusion equation with a p-Laplacian operator is shown to admit three types of blow-up. Self-similar patterns are first constructed for the regional blow-up case, where the rescaled problem admits a variational setting. Next, these were extended via a branching approach to non-variational problems.
Let $s_0 < 0$ be the abscissa of absolute convergence of the dynamical zeta function $Z(s)$ for several disjoint strictly convex compact obstacles $K_i \subset \R^N, i = 1,..., κ_0,\: \ka_0 \geq 3,$ and let $R_χ(z) = χ(-Δ_D - z^2)^{-1}χ,\: χ\in C_0^{\infty}(\R^N),$ be the cut-off resolvent of the Dirichlet Laplacian $-Δ_D$ in $Ω= \bar{\R^N \setminus \cup_{i = 1}^{k_0} K_i}$. We prove that there exists $σ_1 < s_0$ such that $Z(s)$ is analytic for $\Re (s) \geq σ_1$ and the cut-off resolvent $R_χ(z)$ has an analytic continuation for $\Im (z) < - σ_1,\: |\Re (z)| \geq C > 0.$
Let $(M,g)$ be a globally symmetric space of noncompact type, of arbitrary rank, and $Δ$ its Laplacian. We prove the existence of a meromorphic continuation of the resolvent $(Δ-\ev)^{-1}$ across the continuous spectrum to a Riemann surface multiply covering the plane. The methods are purely analytic and are adapted from quantum $N$-body scattering.
We show the analytic continuation of the resolvent of the Laplacian on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces on differential forms, including high energy estimates in strips. This is achieved by placing the spectral family of the Laplacian within the framework developed, and applied to scalar problems, by the author recently, roughly by extending the problem across the boundary of the compactification of the asymptotically hyperbolic space in a suitable manner. The main novelty is that the non-scalar nature of the operator is dealt with by relating it to a problem on an asymptotically Minkowski spa…
In this paper we develop a monotonicity formula for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling, proving unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles. As an application, we obtain strong unique continuation for some fourth order equations and higher order fractional problems.
In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.
We prove a unique continuation property for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ when $s \in (-n/2,\infty)\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. In addition, we study Poincaré-type inequalities for the operator $(-Δ)^s$ when $s\geq 0$. We apply the results to show that one can uniquely recover, up to a gauge, electric and magnetic potentials from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the higher order fractional magnetic Schrödinger equation. We also study the higher order fractional Schrödinger equation with singular electric potential. In both cases, we obtain a Runge approximation property for the equatio…
We consider the weighted eigenvalue problem for a general non-local pseudo-differential operator, depending on a bounded weight function. For such problem, we prove that strict (decreasing) monotonicity of the eigenvalues with respect to the weight function is equivalent to the unique continuation property of eigenfunctions. In addition, we discuss some unique continuation results for the special case of the fractional Laplacian.
Partial differential equations (PDEs) involving fractional Laplace operators have been increasingly used to model non-local diffusion processes and are actively investigated using both analytical and numerical approaches. The purpose of this work is to study the effects of the spectral fractional Laplacian on the bifurcation structure of reaction-diffusion systems on bounded domains. In order to do this we use advanced numerical continuation techniques to compute the solution branches. Since current available continuation packages only support systems involving the standard Laplacian, we first…
As a continuation of the previous work [40], in this paper we focus on the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional (2D) incompressible Boussinesq equations with fractional Laplacian dissipation. We give an elementary proof of the global regularity of the smooth solutions of the 2D Boussinesq equations with a new range of fractional powers of the Laplacian. The argument is based on the nonlinear lower bounds for the fractional Laplacian established in [12]. Consequently, this result significantly improves the recent works [12, 38, 40].
We establish an integration by parts formula in bounded domains for the higher order fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ with $s>1$. We also obtain the Pohozaev identity for this operator. Both identities involve local boundary terms, and they extend the identities obtained by the authors in the case $s\in(0,1)$. As an immediate consequence of these results, we obtain a unique continuation property for the eigenfunctions $(-Δ)^sϕ=λϕ$ in $Ω$, $ϕ\equiv0$ in $\mathbb R^n\setminusΩ$.
In this paper we study the game $p-$Laplacian on a tree, that is, $$ u(x)=\fracα2\left\{\max_{y\in §(x)}u(y) + \min_{y\in §(x)}u(y)\right\} + \fracβ{m}\sum_{y\in §(x)} u(y), $$ here $x$ is a vertex of the tree and $S(x)$ is the set of successors of $x$. We study the family of the subsets of the tree that enjoy the unique continuation property, that is, subsets $U$ such that $u\mid_U=0$ implies $u \equiv 0$.
We obtain a complete characterization of $L^p-L^q$ Carleman estimates with weight $e^{v\cdot x}$ for the polyharmonic operators. Our result extends the Carleman inequalities for the Laplacian due to Kenig--Ruiz--Sogge. Consequently, we obtain new unique continuation properties of higher order Schrödinger equations relaxing the integrability assumption on the solution spaces.
We prove unique continuation properties of solutions to a large class of nonlinear, non-local dispersive equations. The goal is to show that if $u_1,\,u_2$ are two suitable solutions of the equation defined in $\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$ such that for some non-empty open set $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$, $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for $(x,t) \in Ω$, then $u_1(x,t)=u_2(x,t)$ for any $(x,t)\in\mathbb R^n\times[0,T]$. The proof is based on static arguments. More precisely, the main ingredient in the proofs will be the unique continuation properties for fractional powers of the Laplacian established by…
Under the lack of variational structure and nondegeneracy, we investigate three notions of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} for a general infinity Laplacian operator with gradient and homogeneous term. A Harnack inequality and boundary Harnack inequality are proved to support our analysis. This is a continuation of our first work [3] and a contribution in the development of the theory of \textit{generalized principal eigenvalue} beside the works [8, 13, 12, 9, 29]. We use these notions to characterize the validity of maximum principle and study the existence, nonexistence and uniquene…
The purpose of this work is to investigate the exponential stability of a second order coupled wave equations by laplacian with one locally internal viscous damping. Firstly, using a unique continuation theorem combined with a Carleman estimate, we prove that our system is strongly stable without any geometric condition. Secondly, using a combination of the multiplier techniques and the frequency domain approach, we show that our system is exponentially stable under \textbf{(PMGC)} condition on the damping region without any restriction on wave propagation speed (i.e whether the two wave equat…
We consider an overdetermined fourth order boundary value problem in which the boundary value of the Laplacian of the solution is prescribed, in addition to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. It is known that, in the case where the prescribed boundary value is a constant, this overdetermined problem has a solution if and only if the domain under consideration is a ball. In this paper, we study the shape of a domain admitting a solution to the overdetermined problem when the prescribed boundary value is slightly perturbed from a constant. We derive an integral identity for the fourth…
In this note we establish the weak unique continuation theorem for caloric functions on compact $RCD(K,2)$ spaces and show that there exists an $RCD(K,4)$ space on which there exist non-trivial eigenfunctions of the Laplacian and non-stationary solutions of the heat equation which vanish up to infinite order at one point. We also establish frequency estimates for eigenfunctions and caloric functions on the metric horn. In particular, this gives a strong unique continuation type result on the metric horn for harmonic functions with a high rate of decay at the horn tip, where it is known that th…
We consider the Kawahara model and two fourth order semi-linear Schrödinger equations in any spatial dimension. We construct the corresponding normalized ground states, which we rigorously show to be spectrally stable. For the Kawahara model, our results provide a significant extension in parameter space of the current rigorous results. At the same time, we verify and clarify recent numerical simulations of the stability of these solitons. For the fourth order NLS models, we improve upon recent results on stability of very special, explicit solutions in the one dimensional case. Our multidimen…
In this paper we prove strong unique continuation for the following degenerate elliptic equation \begin{equation}\label{e0} Δ_zu +|z|^2\partial_t^2u = Vu,\quad (z,t) \in \mathbb{R}^N \times \mathbb{R} \end{equation} where the potential $V$ satisfies either of the following growth assumptions \begin{align} & |V(z,t)| \leq \frac{f(ρ(z,t))}{ρ(z,t)^2},\ \text{where $f$ satisfies the Dini integrability condition as in (1.3)} \\ & \text{or when } \notag \\ & |V(z,t)| \leq C\frac{ψ(z,t)^ε}{ρ(z,t)^2},\ \text{for some $ε>0$ with $ψ$ as in (2.6) and $N$ even.} \notag \end{align} This extends some of the…

Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren([Al]), we establish an optimal upper bound on the vanishing order of solutions to stationary Schrödinger equations associated to sub-Laplacian on Carnot groups of arbitrary step. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation and can be thought of as an analogue of the recent results of Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.
We study the solvability of the second boundary value problem for a class of highly singular fourth order equations of Monge-Ampère type. They arise in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint using Abreu type equations. Both the Legendre transform and partial Legendre transform are used in our analysis. In two dimensions, we establish global solutions to the second boundary value problem for highly singular Abreu equations where the right hand sides are of $q$-Laplacian type for all $q>1$. We show that minimizers of variational problems with a convexity constr…
We provide an extension of the Hartman-Knobloch theorem for periodic solutions of vector differential systems to a general class of $ϕ$-Laplacian differential operators. Our main tool is a variant of the Manásevich-Mawhin continuation theorem developed for this class of operator equations, together with the theory of bound sets. Our results concern the case of convex bound sets for which we show some new connections using a characterisation of sublevel sets due to Krantz and Parks. We also extend to the $ϕ$-Laplacian vector case a classical theorem of Reissig for scalar periodically perturbed …
In this article, we study a model problem featuring a Lévy process in a domain with semi-transparent boundary by considering the following perturbed fractional Laplacian operator \[\mathscr{L}_{b,q} := (-Δ)^t + (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} \ b (-Δ)_Ω^{s/2} + q, \quad 0<s<t<1\] on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. While the non-locality of the fraction Laplacian $(-Δ)^t$ depends on entire $\mathbb{R}^n$, in its non-local perturbation the non-locality depends on the domain $Ω$ through the regional fractional Laplacian term $(-Δ)^{s/2}_Ω$ and $b$ exhibits the semi-transparency of the process. W…
We use the sum-of-squares theorem from number theory to construct eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the $d$-dimensional torus, $d \geq 2$, which vanish to any prescribed order at some point. These functions are then applied to provide a negative answer (in dimension $d \geq 2$) to a question in the context of quantitative unique continuation for spectral projectors of Schrödinger operators, asked by Egidi and Veselić.
We compute the Green's function for the Hodge Laplacian on the symmetric spaces M\timesΣ, where M is a simply connected n-dimensional Riemannian or Lorentzian manifold of constant curvature and Σis a simply connected Riemannian surface of constant curvature. Our approach is based on a generalization to the case of differential forms of the method of spherical means and on the use of Riesz distributions on manifolds. The radial part of the Green's function is governed by a fourth order analogue of the Heun equation.
In this paper, we study the ground state standing wave solutions for the focusing bi-harmonic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a $μ$-Laplacian term (BNLS). Such BNLS models the propagation of intense laser beams in a bulk medium with a second-order dispersion term. Denote by $Q_p$ the ground state for the BNLS with $μ=0$. We prove that in the mass-subcritical regime $p\in (1,1+\frac{8}{d})$, there exist orbitally stable {ground state solutions} for the BNLS when $μ\in ( -λ_0, \iy)$ for some $λ_0=λ_0(p, d,\|Q_p\|_{L^2})>0$. Moreover, in the mass-critical case $p=1+\frac{8}{d}$\,, we prove th…
Block copolymers play an important role in materials sciences and have found widespread use in many applications. From a mathematical perspective, they are governed by a nonlinear fourth-order partial differential equation which is a suitable gradient of the Ohta-Kawasaki energy. While the equilibrium states associated with this equation are of central importance for the description of the dynamics of block copolymers, their mathematical study remains challenging. In the current paper, we develop computer-assisted proof methods which can be used to study equilibrium solutions in block copolyme…
Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren, we establish an optimal bound on the vanishing order of solutions to stationary Schrödinger equations associated to a class of subelliptic equations with variable coefficients whose model is the so-called Baouendi-Grushin operator. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation that can be thought of as an analogue of the recent results of Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N=1,2,3$, be an open bounded and connected set with continuous piecewise $\mathrm{C}^{\infty}$ boundary. Here we deal with almost periodic distributions of the form $u(t,x)=\sum_{n=0}^{+\infty} c_n S_n(x) \mathrm{e}^{i λ_n t}$ where $(c_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\subset \mathbb{C}$ belong to the space of slowing growing sequences $s^\prime$, and $(λ_n^2)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\subset \mathbb{R}$ and $(S_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\subset \mathrm{H}_0^{1}(Ω)$ are respectively the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Laplacian. Given $ω\subsetΩ$, we prove that there exists $T_{max}(Ω,ω)…
