We provide an extension of the Hartman-Knobloch theorem for periodic solutions of vector differential systems to a general class of $ϕ$-Laplacian differential operators. Our main tool is a variant of the Manásevich-Mawhin continuation theorem developed for this class of operator equations, together with the theory of bound sets. Our results concern the case of convex bound sets for which we show some new connections using a characterisation of sublevel sets due to Krantz and Parks. We also extend to the $ϕ$-Laplacian vector case a classical theorem of Reissig for scalar periodically perturbed Liénard equations.
In this article, we prove a minimax characterization of the second eigenvalue of the p-Laplacian operator on p-quasi-open sets, using a construction based on minimizing movements. This leads also to an existence theorem for spectral functionals depending on the first two eigenvalues of the p-Laplacian.
We prove estimates for eigenfunctions on a manifold equipped with a smooth metric. We use these estimates in order estimate the size of their nodal sets.
In this paper, we prove an upper bound for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with a positive boundary parameter and a quantitative version of the reverse Faber-Krahn type inequality for the first Robin eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian with negative boundary parameter, among convex sets with prescribed perimeter. The proofs are based on a comparison argument obtained by means of inner sets, introduced by Payne, Weimberger and Polya.
An existence and uniqueness result to evolution equations with sign-changing pseudo-differential operators and its applications to logarithmic Laplacian operators and second-order differential operators without ellipticity
In this paper we prove a sharp inequality of Szegő-Weinberger type for the first nontrivial eigenvalue of the $p-$Laplacian with Neumann boundary conditions. This applies to convex sets with given diameter. Some variants, extensions and limit cases are investigated as well.
In this paper we give a full classification of global solutions of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian (including the thin obstacle problem) with compact coincidence set and at most polynomial growth in dimension $N \geq 3$. We do this in terms of a bijection onto a set of polynomials describing the asymptotics of the solution. Furthermore we prove that coincidence sets of global solutions that are compact are also convex if the solution has at most quadratic growth.
We consider the eigenvalue problem for the restricted fractional Laplacian in a bounded domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. We introduce the notion of fractional capacity for compact subsets, with the property that the eigenvalues are not affected by the removal of zero fractional capacity sets. Given a simple eigenvalue, we remove from the domain a family of compact sets which are concentrating to a set of zero fractional capacity and we detect the asymptotic expansion of the eigenvalue variation; this expansion depends on the eigenfunction associated to the limit eigenvalu…
We present eigenvalue data and pictures of eigenfunctions of the classic and quadratic snowflake fractal and of quadratic filled Julia sets. Furthermore, we approximate the area and box-counting dimension of selected Julia sets to compare the eigenvalue counting function with the Weyl term.
We study viscosity solutions to degenerate and singular elliptic equations of $p$-Laplacian type on Riemannian manifolds. The Krylov-Safonov type Harnack inequality for the $p$-Laplacian operators with $1<p<\infty$ is established on the manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded from below based on ABP type estimates. We also prove the Harnack inequality for nonlinear $p$-Laplacian type operators assuming that a nonlinear perturbation of Ricci curvature is bounded below.
The short note here is to give a few heuristic arguments on the weird looking fractional Laplacian operator. This is certainly going to expand the vision of a reader who is looking to develope a taste for research in this direction.
In the present paper we study the existence of solutions for some nonlocal problems involving the p(x)-Laplacian operator. The approach is based on a new sub-supersolution method
In this paper we give sufficient conditions to obtain continuity results of solutions for the so called {\em $ϕ-$Laplacian} $Δ_ϕ$ with respect to domain perturbations. We point out that this kind of results can be extended to a more general class of operators including, for instance, nonlocal nonstandard growth type operators.
We study the graphs associated with Vicsek sets in higher dimensional settings. First, we study the eigenvalues of the Laplacians on the approximating graphs of the Vicsek sets, finding a general spectral decimation function. This is an extension of earlier results on two dimensional Vicsek sets. Second, we study the Vicsek set lattices, which are natural analogues to the Sierpinski lattices. We have a criterion when two different Vicsek set lattices are isomorphic.
This paper is concerned with the study of a nonlinear problems involving the fractional p(x)-Laplacian operator. By means of the Berkovits degree theory, we prove the existence of nontrivial weak solutions for this problem. The appropriate functional framework for this problems is the fractional Sobolev spaces with variable exponent.
In this paper, we derive global sharp heat kernel estimates for symmetric alpha-stable processes (or equivalently, for the fractional Laplacian with zero exterior condition) in two classes of unbounded C^{1,1} open sets in R^d: half-space-like open sets and exterior open sets. These open sets can be disconnected. We focus in particular on explicit estimates for p_D(t,x,y) for all t>0 and x, y\in D. Our approach is based on the idea that for x and y in $D$ far from the boundary and t sufficiently large, we can compare p_D(t,x,y) to the heat kernel in a well understood open set: either a half-sp…
We consider a fractional elliptic equation in an unbounded set with both Dirichlet and fractional normal derivative datum prescribed. We prove that the domain and the solution are necessarily radially symmetric. The extension of the result in bounded non-convex regions is also studied, as well as the radial symmetry of the solution when the set is a priori supposed to be rotationally symmetric.
In this work we introduce volume constraint problems involving the nonlocal operator $(-Δ)_δ^{s}$, closely related to the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^{s}$, and depending upon a parameter $δ>0$ called horizon. We study the associated linear and spectral problems and the behavior of these volume constraint problems when $δ\to0^+$ and $δ\to+\infty$. Through these limit processes on $(-Δ)_δ^{s}$ we derive spectral convergence to the local Laplacian and to the fractional Laplacian as $δ\to 0^+$ and $δ\to +\infty$ respectively, as well as we prove the convergence of solutions of these problems to sol…
This paper deals with existence of positive solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic systems involving the $Φ$-Laplacian operator and convex-concave singular terms. Our approach is based on the generalized Galerkin Method along with perturbartion techniques and comparison arguments in the setting of Orlicz-Sobolev spaces
In the present paper we study the existence of solutions for a class of nonlocal system involving the p(x)-Laplacian operator. The approach is based on a new sub-supersolution result.
In this paper, we analyze an eigenvalue problem for a quasi-linear elliptic operators involving Dirichlet boundary condition in an open smooth bounded set of $\mathbb{R}^N$. We investigate a bifurcation results (from trivial solution and from infinity) of an eigenvalue problem involving the $(p,2)$-Laplace operator, from the Fu\v cik spectrum of the Laplacian.
In this paper we find viscosity solutions to an elliptic system governed by two different operators (the Laplacian and the infinity Laplacian) using a probabilistic approach. We analyze a game that combines the Tug-of-War with Random Walks in two different boars. We show that these value functions converge uniformly to a viscosity solution of the elliptic system as the step size goes to zero. In addition, we show uniqueness for the elliptic system using pure PDE techniques.
It is established $L^{p}$ estimates for the fractional $Φ$-Laplacian operator defined in bounded domains where the nonlinearity is subcritical or critical in a suitable sense. Furthermore, using some fine estimates together with the Moser's iteration, we prove that any weak solution for fractional $Φ$-Laplacian operator defined in bounded domains belongs to $L^\infty(Ω)$ under appropriate hypotheses on the $N$-function $Φ$. Using the Orlicz space and taking into account the fractional setting for our problem the main results are stated for a huge class of nonlinear operators and nonlinearities…
We study semilinear problems in general bounded open sets for non-local operators with exterior and boundary conditions. The operators are more general than the fractional Laplacian. We also give results in case of bounded $C^{1,1}$ open sets.
In this work we study the homogenization for eigenvalues of the fractional $p-$Laplace in a bounded domain both with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions. We obtain the convergence of eigenvalues and the explicit order of the convergence rates.
In the present work we study solutions of the problem $-(-Δ)^{α/2}u = f(x,u)$ in $D_0\setminus \overline{D}_1$, with exterior conditions $u = 0$ in $R^N \setminus D_0$ and $u = 1$ in $\overline{D}_1$, where $D_1, D_0 \subset R^N$ are open sets such that $\overline{D}_1 \subset D_0$, $α\in (0,2)$, and $f$ is a nonlinearity. Under different assumptions on $f$ we prove that, if $D_0$ and $D_1$ are starshaped with respect to the same point $\bar{x} \in \overline{D}_1$, then the same occurs for every superlevel set of $u$.
We study a singularly perturbed problem related to infinity Laplacian operator with prescribed boundary values in a region. We prove that solutions are locally (uniformly) Lipschitz continuous, they grow as a linear function, are strongly non-degenerate and have porous level surfaces. Moreover, for some restricted cases we show the finiteness of the (n-1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure of level sets. The analysis of the asymptotic limits is carried out as well.
We study the boundary integral operator induced from the fractional Laplace equation in a bounded smooth domain. For $1/2 < α? < 1$, we show the bijectivity of the boundary integral operator $S_{2α} : L^p(\partial Ω) \rightarrow H^{2α-1}_p (\partial Ω), 1 < p < 1$. As an application, we show the existence of the solution of the boundary value problem of the fractional Laplace equation.
In the limit of a nonlinear diffusion model involving the fractional Laplacian we get a "mean field" equation arising in superconductivity and superfluidity. For this equation, we obtain uniqueness, universal bounds and regularity results. We also show that solutions with finite second moment and radial solutions admit an asymptotic large time limiting profile which is a special self-similar solution: the "elementary vortex patch".
The authors of this paper study singular phenomena(vanishing and blowing-up in finite time) of solutions to the homogeneous $\hbox{Dirichlet}$ boundary value problem of nonlinear diffusion equations involving $p(x)$-\hbox{Laplacian} operator and a nonlinear source. The authors discuss how the value of the variable exponent $p(x)$ and initial energy(data) affect the properties of solutions. At the same time, we obtain the critical extinction and blow-up exponents of solutions.
In this work, we study a quasilinear elliptic problem involving the 1-laplacian operator, with a discontinuous, superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity involving the Heaviside function $H(\cdot - β)$. Our approach is based on an analysis of the associated p-laplacian problem, followed by a thorough analysis of the asymptotic behaviour or such solutions as $p \to 1^+$. We study also the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions, as $β\to 0^+$ and we prove that it converges to a solution of the original problem, without the discontinuity in the nonlinearity.
We study in this paper the global hypoellipticity property in the Gevrey category for the generalized twisted Laplacian on forms. Different from the 0-form case, where the twisted Laplacian is a scalar operator, this is a system of differential operators when acting on forms, each component operator being elliptic locally and degenerate globally. We obtain here the global hypoellipticity in anisotropic Gevrey space.
In this paper, we prove two results for the Robin eigenvalue problem. One is an upper bound for the ratio of the first two eigenvalues which can be used to recover the PPW conjecture proved by M.S.Ashbaugh and R.D.Benguria, the other is a reverse Holder inequality for the first eigenfunction which is a natural generalization of Chiti's reverse Holder inequality for the first eigenfunction of Dirichlet Laplacian.
We study the relationship between the symbol of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator associated with a connection Laplacian, and the geometry on and near the boundary. As a consequence, we show that the geometric data on the boundary, and when the dimension of the base is greater than two all corresponding normal derivatives, are determined by the symbol.
The operator square root of the Laplacian $(-\lap)^{1/2}$ can be obtained from the harmonic extension problem to the upper half space as the operator that maps the Dirichlet boundary condition to the Neumann condition. In this paper we obtain similar characterizations for general fractional powers of the Laplacian and other integro-differential operators. From those characterizations we derive some properties of these integro-differential equations from purely local arguments in the extension problems.
We study the Dancer-Fucik spectrum of the fractional p-Laplacian operator. We construct an unbounded sequence of decreasing curves in the spectrum using a suitable minimax scheme. For p=2, we present a very accurate local analysis. We construct the minimal and maximal curves of the spectrum locally near the points where it intersects the main diagonal of the plane. We give a sufficient condition for the region between them to be nonempty, and show that it is free of the spectrum in the case of a simple eigenvalue. Finally we compute the critical groups in various regions separated by these cur…
In this paper we analyze the evolution of the time averaged energy densities associated with a family of solutions to a Schr{ö}dinger equation on a Lie group of Heisenberg type. We use a semi-classical approach adapted to the stratified structure of the group and describe the semi-classical measures (also called quantum limits) that are associated with this family. This allows us to prove an Egorov's type Theorem describing the quantum evolution of a pseudodifferential semi-classical operator through the semi-group generated by a sub-Laplacian.
For $1\leq q \leq n-2$, we provide explicit examples to demonstrate non-compactness of the Neumann operator for the Kohn Laplacian acting on $L^2$ $(0,q)$-forms on the unit ball in $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg space.
This paper concerns the existence of global solutions for the following class of heat equation involving the 1-Laplacian operator of the Dirichlet problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{llc} u_{t}-Δ_1 u=f(u) & \text{in}\ & Ω\times (0, +\infty) , u =0 & \text{in} & \partialΩ\times (0, +\infty), u(x,0)=u_{0}(x)& \text{in} &Ω, \end{array}\right. \leqno{(P)} $$ where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a smooth bounded domain, $N \geq 1$ and $f:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}$ is a continuous function satisfying some technical conditions, and $Δ_1 u=\text{div}\left(\frac{Du}{|Du|}\right)$ denotes the 1-Laplacian operat…
We identify explicitly the fractional power spaces for the $L^2$ Dirichlet Laplacian and Dirichlet Stokes operators using the theory of real interpolation. The results are not new, but we hope that our arguments are relatively accessible.
The purpose of this article is to establish upper and lower estimates for the integral kernel of the semigroup exp(-tP) associated to a classical, strongly elliptic pseudodifferential operator P of positive order on a closed manifold. The Poissonian bounds generalize those obtained for perturbations of fractional powers of the Laplacian. In the selfadjoint case, extensions to t in C_+ are studied. In particular, our results apply to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann semigroup.
All the known counterexamples to Kac' famous question "can one hear the shape of a drum", i.e., does isospectrality of two Laplacians on domains imply that the domains are congruent, consist of pairs of domains composed of copies of isometric building blocks arranged in different ways, such that the unitary operator intertwining the Laplacians acts as a sum of overlapping "local" isometries mapping the copies to each other. We prove and explore a complementary positive statement: if an operator intertwining two appropriate realisations of the Laplacian on a pair of domains preserves disjoint s…
In this paper we prove the existence of a maximum for the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue in the class of convex sets with a fixed spherical hole under volume constraint. More precisely, if $Ω=Ω_0 \setminus \bar{B}_{R_1}$, where $B_{R_1}$ is the ball centered at the origin with radius $R_1>0$ and $Ω_0\subset\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 2$, is an open bounded and convex set such that $B_{R_1}\Subset Ω_0$, then the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue $σ_1(Ω)$ has a maximum when $R_1$ and the measure of $Ω$ are fixed. Moreover, if $Ω_0$ is contained in a suitable ball, we prove that the spherical shel…
In this paper, we develop a direct {\em blowing-up and rescaling} argument for a nonlinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian operator. Instead of using the conventional extension method introduced by Caffarelli and Silvestre, we work directly on the nonlocal operator. Using the integral defining the nonlocal elliptic operator, by an elementary approach, we carry on a {\em blowing-up and rescaling} argument directly on nonlocal equations and thus obtain a priori estimates on the positive solutions for a semi-linear equation involving the fractional Laplacian. We believe that the ideas…
This paper discusses the unique continuation principal of the solutions of the following perturbed fourth order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{L}_{A,q}u=0$, where \[ \mathcal{L}_{A,q}(x,D)\ =\ \sum_{j=1}^nD^4_{x_j} + \sum_{j=1}^n A_jD_{x_j} + q, \qquad (A, q) \in W^{1,\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}^n) \times L^{\infty}(Ω,\mathbb{C}) \] whose principal term is not given by some integer power of the Laplacian operator. We derive some suitable Carleman estimates which is the main tool to prove the unique continuation principle. As a by-product, we also deduce some stability estimate and prove the…
In this note we introduce some nonlinear extremal nonlocal operators that approximate the, so called, truncated Laplacians. For these operators we construct representation formulas that lead to the construction of what, with an abuse of notation, could be called "fundamental solutions". This, in turn, leads to Liouville type results. The interest is double: on one hand we wish to "understand" what is the right way to define the nonlocal version of the truncated Laplacians, on the other, we introduce nonlocal operators whose nonlocality is on one dimensional lines, and this dramatically changes…
The aim of this paper is to obtain the existence of solution for the fractional p-Laplacian Dirichlet problem with mixed derivatives \begin{eqnarray*} &{_{t}}D_{T}^α\left(|_{0}D_{t}^αu(t))|^{p-2}{_{0}}D_{t}^αu(t)\right) = f(t,u(t)), \;t\in [0,T],\\ &u(0) = u(T) = 0, \end{eqnarray*} where $\frac{1}{p} < α<1$, $1<p<\infty$ and $f:[0,T]\times \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is a Carathéodory function wich satisfies some growth conditions. We obtain the existence of nontrivial solution by using the Mountain Pass Theorem.
We first study the so-called Heat equation with two families of elliptic operators whichare fully nonlinear, and depend on some eigenvalues of the Hessian matrix. The equationwith operators including the "large" eigenvalues has strong similarities with a Heatequation in lower dimension whereas, surprisingly, for operators including "small" eigenvalues it shares some properties with some transport equations. In particular, forthese operators, the Heat equation (which is nonlinear) not only does not have theproperty that "disturbances propagate with infinite speed" but may lead to quenchingin fi…
We show how nonlocal boundary conditions of Robin type can be encoded in the pointwise expression of the fractional operator. Notably, the fractional Laplacian of functions satisfying homogeneous nonlocal Neumann conditions can be expressed as a regional operator with a kernel having logarithmic behaviour at the boundary.
We study the spectral decomposition of the Laplacian on a family of fractals $\mathcal{VS}_n$ that includes the Vicsek set for $n=2$, extending earlier research on the Sierpinski Gasket. We implement an algorithm [24] for spectral decimation of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, and explicitly compute these eigenfunctions and some of their properties. We give an algorithm for computing inner products of eigenfunctions. We explicitly compute solutions to the heat equation and wave equation for Neumann boundary conditions. We study gaps in the ratios of eigenvalues and eigenvalue clusters. We give…
