Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N=1,2,3$, be an open bounded and connected set with continuous piecewise $\mathrm{C}^{\infty}$ boundary. Here we deal with almost periodic distributions of the form $u(t,x)=\sum_{n=0}^{+\infty} c_n S_n(x) \mathrm{e}^{i λ_n t}$ where $(c_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\subset \mathbb{C}$ belong to the space of slowing growing sequences $s^\prime$, and $(λ_n^2)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\subset \mathbb{R}$ and $(S_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\subset \mathrm{H}_0^{1}(Ω)$ are respectively the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Laplacian. Given $ω\subsetΩ$, we prove that there exists $T_{max}(Ω,ω)>0$ depending only on $Ω$ and $ω$ such that if $T>T_{max}(Ω,ω)$ and $u|_{ω\times ]-T,T[}=0$, then $u\equiv 0$. Using this result we prove a unique continuation property for the wave equation.
We quantify the uniqueness of continuation from Cauchy or interior data. Our approach consists in extending the existing results in the linear case. As by product we obtain a new stability estimate in the linear case. We also show the so-called strong uniqueness of continuation and the uniqueness of continuation from a set of positive measure. These results are derived by using a linearization procedure.
In this paper we establish some new $L^{2}-L^{2}$ Carleman estimates for the Baouendi-Grushin operators $\mathscr{B}_γ$, in (1.1) below. We apply such estimates to obtain: (i) an extension of the Bourgain-Kenig quantitative unique continuation; (ii) the strong unique continuation property for some degenerate sublinear equations.
The classical Hopf's lemma can be reformulated as uniqueness of continuation result. We aim in the present work to quantify this property. We show precisely that if a solution $u$ of a divergence form elliptic equation attains its maximum at a boundary point $x_0$ then both $L^1$-norms of $u-u(x_0)$ on the domain and on the boundary are bounded, up to a multiplicative constant, by the exterior normal derivative at $x_0$.
Based on a variant of frequency function, we improve the vanishing order of solutions for Schrödinger equations which describes quantitative behavior of strong uniqueness continuation property. For the first time, we investigate the quantitative uniqueness of higher order elliptic equations and show the vanishing order of solutions. Furthermore, strong unique continuation is established for higher order elliptic equations using this variant of frequency function.
We study uniqueness properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations. The aim is to obtain sufficient conditions on the decay behavior of the difference of two solution $u_1-u_2$ of the equation at two different times $t_0=0$ and $t_1=1$ which guarantee the uniqueness of the solution, i.e. that $u_1\equiv u_2$.
In this paper we study the local behavior of a solution to the Lamé system with \emph{Lipschitz} coefficients in dimension $n\ge 2$. Our main result is the bound on the vanishing order of a nontrivial solution, which immediately implies the strong unique continuation property. This paper solves the open problem of the strong uniqueness continuation property for the Lamé system with Lipschitz coefficients in any dimension.
We prove various uniqueness results from null infinity, for linear waves on asymptotically flat space-times. Assuming vanishing of the solution to infinite order on suitable parts of future and past null infinities, we derive that the solution must vanish in an open set in the interior. We find that the parts of infinity where we must impose a vanishing condition depend strongly on the background geometry. In particular, for backgrounds with positive mass (such as Schwarzschild or Kerr), the required assumptions are much weaker than the ones in the Minkowski space-time. The results are nearly …
The question of unique continuation of harmonic functions in a domain $Ω$ $\subset$ R d with boundary $\partial$$Ω$, satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions and with normal derivatives vanishing on a subset $ω$ of the boundary is a classical problem. When $ω$ contains an open subset of the boundary it is a consequence of Carleman estimates (uniqueness for second order elliptic operators across an hypersurface). The case where $ω$ is a set of positive (d -- 1) dimensional measure has attracted a lot of attention, see e.g. [10, 3, 15], where qualitative results have been obtained in various sit…
The goal of this paper is to prove a uniqueness result for a stochastic heat equation with a randomly perturbed potential, which can be considered as a variant of Hardy's uncertainty principle for stochastic heat evolutions.
This paper deals with the unique continuation of solutions for a one-dimensional anomalous diffusion equation with Caputo derivative of order $α\in(0,1)$. Firstly, the uniqueness of solutions to a lateral Cauchy problem for the anomalous diffusion equation is given via the Theta function method, from which we further verify the unique continuation principle.
In this paper, we prove a unique continuation or ``backwards-uniqueness'' theorem for solutions to the Ricci flow. A particular consequence is that the isometry group of a solution cannot expand within the lifetime of the solution.
In this work we shall review some of our recent results concerning unique continuation properties of solutions of Schrödinger equations. In this equations we include linear ones with a time depending potential and semi-linear ones.
The aim of the paper is twofold. Firstly, we would like to derive quantitative uniqueness estimates for solutions of the general complex conductivity equation. It is still unknown whether the \emph{strong} unique continuation property holds for such equations. Nonetheless, in this paper, we show that the unique continuation property in the form of three-ball inequalities is satisfied for the complex conductivity equation under only Lipschitz assumption on the leading coefficients. The derivation of such estimates relies on a delicate Carleman estimate. Secondly, we study the problem of estimat…
We give a new proof of a classical uniqueness theorem of Alexandrov using the weak uniqueness continuation theorem of Bers-Nirenberg. We prove a version of this theorem with the minimal regularity assumption: the spherical hessians of the corresponding convex bodies as Radon measures are nonsingular.
In this paper, we obtain the sharp uniqueness for an inverse $x$-source problem for a one-dimensional time-fractional diffusion equation with a zeroth-order term by the minimum possible lateral Cauchy data. The key ingredient is the unique continuation which holds for weak solutions.
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear Fuchsian type partial differential equation of the second order in the complex domain. Under a very weak assumption, we show the uniqueness of the solution. The result is applied to the problem of analytic continuation of local holomorphic solutions of this equation.
We show global uniqueness in the fractional Calderón problem with a single measurement and with data on arbitrary, possibly disjoint subsets of the exterior. The previous work \cite{GhoshSaloUhlmann} considered the case of infinitely many measurements. The method is again based on the strong uniqueness properties for the fractional equation, this time combined with a unique continuation principle from sets of measure zero. We also give a constructive procedure for determining an unknown potential from a single exterior measurement, based on constructive versions of the unique continuation resu…
We prove a uniqueness theorem for compactly supported initial data for the variable speed wave equation arising in models of thermoacoustic tomography, given measurements on a part of the boundary. The proof is based on domain of dependence arguments and D. Tataru's unique continuation theorem.
In this paper we study the uniqueness and the increasing stability in the inverse source problem for electromagnetic waves in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media from boundary data at multiple wave numbers. For the unique determination of sources, we consider inhomogeneous media and use tangential components of the electric field and magnetic field at the boundary of the reference domain. The proof relies on the Fourier transform with respect to the wave numbers and the unique continuation theorems. To study the increasing stability in the source identification, we consider homogeneous media a…
We investigate the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to parabolic equations with lower order terms on compact smooth manifolds. Quantitative uniqueness is a quantitative form of strong unique continuation property. We characterize quantitative uniqueness by the rate of vanishing. We can obtain the vanishing order of solutions by $C^{1, 1}$ norm of the potential functions, as well as the $L^\infty$ norm of the coefficient functions. Some quantitative Carleman estimates and three cylinder inequalities are established.
In this article, we study the quantitative uniqueness of solutions to second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms. We quantify the strong unique continuation property by estimating the maximal vanishing order of solutions. That is, when $u$ is a non-trivial solution to $\triangle u + W \cdot \nabla u + V u = 0$ in some open, connected subset of $\mathbb R^n$, where $n \geq 3$, we characterize the vanishing order of solutions in terms of the norms of $V$ and $W$ in their respective Lebesgue spaces. Using these maximal order of vanishing estimates, we also establish quantitat…
The purpose of this short note is to show how it is possible to combine existing results in the literature to get the unique continuation from sets of positive measure for time dependent parabolic equations with Lipschitz principal part and bounded lower order terms, result which was known in the case of analytic coefficients in [3].
We consider the quantitative uniqueness properties for a parabolic type equation $ u_t-Δu = w(x,t) \nabla u + v(x,t) u$, when $v \in L^{p_2}_{t} L^{p_1}_x$ and $w \in L^{q_2}_{t} L^{q_1}_x$, with a suitable range for exponents $p_1$, $p_2$, $q_1$, and $q_2$. We prove a strong unique continuation property and provide a pointwise in time observability estimate.
We address the quantitative uniqueness properties of the solutions of the parabolic equation $ \partial_t u - Δu = w_j (x,t) \partial_j u + v(x,t) u $ where $v$ and $w$ are bounded. We prove that for solutions $u$, the order of vanishing is bounded by $C(\Vert v\Vert_{L^\infty}^{2/3}+\Vert w\Vert_{L^\infty}^2)$ matching the upper bound previously established in the elliptic case. in the elliptic case.
In this paper we provide a complete local well-posedness theory for the free boundary relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary on a Minkowski background. Specifically, we establish the following results: (i) local well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, i.e., local existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on the data; (ii) low regularity solutions: our uniqueness result holds at the level of Lipschitz velocity and density, while our rough solutions, obtained as unique limits of smooth solutions, have regularity only a half derivative above scaling; (iii) stability: ou…
We consider the unique continuation properties of asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes by studying Klein-Gordon-type equations $\Box_g ϕ+ σϕ= \mathcal{G} ( ϕ, \partial ϕ)$, $σ\in \mathbb{R}$, on a large class of such spacetimes. Our main result establishes that if $ϕ$ vanishes to sufficiently high order (depending on $σ$) on a sufficiently long time interval along the conformal boundary $\mathcal{I}$, then the solution necessarily vanishes in a neighborhood of $\mathcal{I}$. In particular, in the $σ$-range where Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are possible on $\mathcal{I}$ for the forward…
We are concerned with the problem of determining the damping boundary coefficient appearing in a dissipative wave equation from a single boundary measurement. We prove that the uniqueness holds at the origin provided that the initial condition is appropriately chosen. We show that the choice of the initial condition leading to uniqueness is related to a fine version of unique continuation property for elliptic operators. We also establish a Lipschitz directional stability estimate at the origin, which is obtained by a linearization process.
We use a Carleman type inequality of Koch and Tataru to obtain quantitative estimates of unique continuation for solutions of second order elliptic equations with singular lower order terms. First we prove a three sphere inequality and then describe two methods of propagation of smallness from sets of positive measure.
We study the quantitative unique continuation property of some higher order elliptic operators. In the case of $P=(-Δ)^m$, where $m$ is a positive integer, we derive lower bounds of decay at infinity for any nontrivial solutions under some general assumptions. Furthermore, in dimension 2, we can obtain essentially sharp lower bounds for some forth order elliptic operators, the sharpness is shown by constructing a Meshkov type example.
This paper is devoted to the inverse problem of determining the spatially dependent source in a time fractional diffusion-wave equation, with the aid of extra measurement data at subboundary. Uniqueness result is obtained by using the analyticity and the new established unique continuation principle provided that the coefficients are all temporally independent. We also derive a Lipschitz stability of our inverse source problem under a suitable topology whose norm is given via the adjoint system of the fractional diffusion-wave equation.
We consider the weighted eigenvalue problem for a general non-local pseudo-differential operator, depending on a bounded weight function. For such problem, we prove that strict (decreasing) monotonicity of the eigenvalues with respect to the weight function is equivalent to the unique continuation property of eigenfunctions. In addition, we discuss some unique continuation results for the special case of the fractional Laplacian.
This paper deals with nonlinear singular partial differential equations of the form $t \partial u/\partial t=F(t,x,u,\partial u/\partial x)$ with independent variables $(t,x) \in \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{C}$, where $F(t,x,u,v)$ is a function continuous in $t$ and holomorphic in the other variables. Under a very weak assumption we show the uniqueness of the solution of this equation. The results are applied to the problem of analytic continuation of local holomorphic solutions of equations of this type.
Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren, we establish an optimal bound on the vanishing order of solutions to stationary Schrödinger equations associated to a class of subelliptic equations with variable coefficients whose model is the so-called Baouendi-Grushin operator. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation that can be thought of as an analogue of the recent results of Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.
Based on a variant of the frequency function approach of Almgren, we establish an optimal upper bound on the vanishing order of solutions to variable coefficient Schrödinger equations at a portion of the boundary of a $C^{1,Dini}$ domain. Such bound provides a quantitative form of strong unique continuation at the boundary. It can be thought of as a boundary analogue of an interior result recently obtained by Bakri and Zhu for the standard Laplacian.
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for an integrable multi-component (2N-component) peakon system which is involved in an arbitrary polynomial function. Based on a generalized Ovsyannikov type theorem, we first prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions for the system in the Gevrey-Sobolev spaces with the lower bound of the lifespan. Then we show the continuity of the data-to-solution map for the system. Furthermore, by introducing a family of continuous diffeomorphisms of a line and utilizing the fine structure of the system, we demonstrate the system exhibits unique continuation…
In this paper, we first establish a weak unique continuation property for time-fractional diffusion-advection equations. The proof is mainly based on the Laplace transform and the unique continuation properties for elliptic and parabolic equations. The result is weaker than its parabolic counterpart in the sense that we additionally impose the homogeneous boundary condition. As a direct application, we prove the uniqueness for an inverse problem on determining the spatial component in the source term in by interior measurements. Numerically, we reformulate our inverse source problem as an opti…
In this paper, we obtain new Carleman estimates for a class of variable coefficient degenerate elliptic operators whose constant coefficient model at one point is the so called Baouendi-Grushin operator. This generalizes the results obtained by the two of us with Garofalo in [9] where similar estimates were established for the "constant coefficient" Baouendi-Grushin operator. Consequently, we obtain: (i) a Bourgain-Kenig type quantitative uniqueness result in the variable coefficient setting; (ii) and a strong unique continuation property for a class of degenerate sublinear equations. We also …
We study the fractional Schrödinger equation with quasilocal perturbations. These are a family of nonlocal perturbations vanishing at infinity, which include e.g. convolutions against Schwartz functions. We show that the qualitative unique continuation and Runge approximation properties hold in the assumption of sufficient decay. Quantitative versions of both results are also obtained via a propagation of smallness analysis for the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension. The results are then used to show uniqueness in the inverse problem of retrieving a quasilocal perturbation from DN data under suita…
In this paper we consider the linear Schrodinger equation (LSE) on a regular tree with the last generation of edges of infinite length and analyze some unique continuation properties. The first part of the paper deals with the LSE on the real line with a piece-wise constant coefficient and uses this result in the context of regular trees. The second part treats the case of a LSE with a real potential in the framework of a star-shaped graph.
We study two types of unique continuation properties for the higher order Schrödinger equation with potential $$ i\partial_tu=(-Δ_x)^mu+V(t,x)u,\quad(t,x)\in\mathbb{R}^{1+n},\,2\leq m\in\mathbb{N}_+. $$ The first one says if $u$ has certain exponential decay at two times, then $u\equiv0$, and this result is sharp by constructing critical non-trivial solutions. The second one says if $u\equiv0$ in an arbitrary half-space of $\mathbb{R}^{1+n}$, then $u\equiv0$ identically. The uniqueness theorems are given when $n=1$, but we also prove partial results when $n\in\mathbb{N}_+$ for their own intere…
We discuss the Cauchy problem for anisotropic wave equations. Precisely, we address the question to know which kind of Cauchy data on the lateral boundary are necessary to guarantee the uniqueness of continuation of solutions of an anisotropic wave equation. In the case where the uniqueness holds, the natural problem that arise naturally in this context is to estimate the solutions, in some appropriate space, in terms of norms of the Cauchy data. We aim in this paper to convert, via a reduced Fourrier-Bros-Iagolnitzer transform, the known stability results on the Cauchy problem for elliptic eq…
In this article, we investigate inverse source problems for a wide range of PDEs of parabolic and hyperbolic types as well as time-fractional evolution equations by partial interior observation. Restricting the source terms to the form of separated variables, we establish uniqueness results for simultaneously determining both temporal and spatial components without non-vanishing assumptions at $t=0$, which seems novel to the best of our knowledge. Remarkably, mostly we allow a rather flexible choice of the observation time not necessarily starting from $t=0$, which fits into various situations…
We prove a unique continuation property for the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ when $s \in (-n/2,\infty)\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. In addition, we study Poincaré-type inequalities for the operator $(-Δ)^s$ when $s\geq 0$. We apply the results to show that one can uniquely recover, up to a gauge, electric and magnetic potentials from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map associated to the higher order fractional magnetic Schrödinger equation. We also study the higher order fractional Schrödinger equation with singular electric potential. In both cases, we obtain a Runge approximation property for the equatio…
We prove a scale-free, quantitative unique continuation principle for functions in the range of the spectral projector $χ_{(-\infty,E]}(H_L)$ of a Schrödinger operator $H_L$ on a cube of side $L\in \mathbb{N}$, with bounded potential. Such estimates are also called, depending on the context, uncertainty principles, observability estimates, or spectral inequalities. We apply it to (i) prove a Wegner estimate for random Schrödinger operators with non-linear parameter-dependence and to (ii) exhibit the dependence of the control cost on geometric model parameters for the heat equation in a multi-s…
Two measurable sets $S, Λ\subseteq \mathcal{R}^d$ form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair, if every bounded measure $μ$ with support in S whose Fourier transform vanishes on Λ must be zero. We show that a quadratic hypersurface and the union of two hyperplanes in general position form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair in $\mathcal{R}^d$. As a corollary we obtain a new, surprising version of the classical Cramér-Wold theorem: a bounded measure supported on a quadratic hypersurface is uniquely determined by its projections onto two generic hyperplanes (whereas an arbitrary measure requires the knowledge of…
